“Dad!” Tru says, shocked. “Bill, please,” Alice says softly at the same time as Tru. Both seem appalled by Bill’s questions.

Placing my hand on Tru’s knee, I say, “I understand your concerns and appreciate your directness. The truth is, I wanted this to be a fling, but it isn’t.” I smile, remembering when I first met Tru, “I felt Tru’s presence before I laid eyes on her. Something about her appealed to me on a level I never knew existed.” I look at Tru, then back to her father, “Tru means more to me than I could put into words. I want Tru’s happiness for the future, I want to hear her laugh every day, I want to look at her smiling face, listen to her sigh in her sleep, and so much more. I love Tru.”

Bill continues to study me while Alice smiles. Two more people enter the room. The man must be Tru’s other brother. He, too, is built like his father, but he shares his mother's

  • The Dragon's Stone   Morning confusion

I didn’t sleep much. I probably kept Taran awake most of the night. He held me close and tried to soothe me all night. The affection he showed me has me so confused. Taran said that I’m his companion and friend. He doesn’t love me romantically like he does Jonat. The lie Taran told my parents last night was so good, I almost believed him. There are moments when he spoke that it felt like he was talking directly to me. But it’s all an act. The way he treated me last night was his way of being supportive of his companion.I pull away from Taran and sit up in bed. In a groggy voice, he says, “Hey, Tru. How are you feeling? I know you didn’t get much sleep.” Taran touches my shoulder, and I jerk away from him. My reaction seems to startle him, and he quickly pulls back, “I’m sorry.” He pauses for a moment before asking, “Are you angry about what we did last night?”I can’t bring myself to look at

  • The Dragon's Stone   His confession

Taran and I walk around the block. I take him to my old treehouse, and I find it’s still standing. We carefully climb up and sit with our legs dangling off the sides. My heart is racing, and I feel anxious, “I don’t like lying to my parents.”“What do you mean?” he asks, sounding confused.“They think you love me,” I say without wanting to look at him.Taran replies in a soft voice, “I do love you, Tru. Everything I’ve said to your parents about the way I feel about you is the truth.”My eyes snap to his, and my mind raced, “What about Jonat?”Taran looks unfazed, “What about her?”“She’s your queen,” I say, a little defeated and looked away from him.Placing a hand on my cheek, Taran pushes me to look at him. As my eyes meet his, I see the same affection I tried to convince myself was imaginary. “She was going to become m

  • The Dragon's Stone   Happy Birthday Dad

Taran and I spend the afternoon prepping food for my dad’s party. My mom joins us in the kitchen around four. I don’t let her help, but she sits at the table and talks to us. Sarge lays under the table next to her so he can watch everyone. Pat, Mike, and Dave are outside with my dad starting up his new grill and watching the two boys play in the backyard. I don’t know where Cindy is, but I’m glad she isn’t here bothering me.“Taran, I think Bill is ready for the meat. Do you mind taking everything out there to him?” My mom asks Taran. He smiles, “Not at all. Should I take it all at once, or are there certain things that need to go out first?”My mom shrugs, “I only cook inside. He’s in charge of grilling. I would take it all if you can carry it.”Taran nods and begins to gather everything to take outside. After he leaves, my mom says, “I know you and Taran are living together. W

  • The Dragon's Stone   Picking locks

TaranLast night is the first night I’ve slept with anything covering me. I don’t find it comfortable, but my options were limited. It was either sleep with the sheet or allow Tru to wear clothes. Since feeling Tru’s naked body against mine was more important, I opted for the sheet. I didn’t tell Tru why we were using the sheet. Deep down, I’m sure she realizes someone is watching us, but she doesn’t know who or why. I know who, but I don’t know why.Yesterday morning Cindy tried to come into the room Tru and I are sleeping in without knocking. She made multiple attempts to open the door but wasn’t successful. Then after Tru and I finished the dishes, I heard her sneaking down the hall towards us. It’s why I pulled back from Tru. Cindy is fishing for something, but I’m not sure why. With the way she baits Tru and talks to her, I don’t want to give her any possible ammunition. With the timing of Ci

  • The Dragon's Stone   Hidden agendas

Taran holds my hand as we sit at the table across from Dave and Cindy. My parents sit at the ends of the table. In a soft voice, my mother says, “We all need to keep calm and discuss things like adults. Tru, I expect you to speak with respect. Dave, I expect you to listen to your sister and consider her feelings. We all need to come to an understanding. This tension cannot continue.”Dave and I are silent. Neither of us want to say anything. Cindy is the first to say anything, “I don’t understand why you’re so cruel to me, Tru. I have done nothing but try to be your friend.” I suppress the need to scoff and roll my eyes. Keeping my face neutral, I try to imagine this is practice when I’m Taran’s queen, and we hold court. Cindy continues, “It’s hard being an outsider.” She looks over at Taran, “I’m sure it’s different for you since you’re dating the golden child.”“Gold

  • The Dragon's Stone   Volcanic Glass

TaranThe talk with Tru’s brother and Cindy went better than I expected. David didn’t seem to make any progress, but I convinced Bill that Cindy wanted to hurt Tru without a doubt. He slid his phone to me and asked if I would take a picture of Cindy’s face while he pretended to scold Tru.When Tru realized her father wasn’t upset with her, I felt the tension leave her body. I think she knew Cindy poisoned the relationship between her and David but didn’t expect that Cindy also wanted to ruin her relationship with her parents.Once we get back into Tru’s room to pack our things, I ask, “Do you have anything of significant value in your room? Jewels, family heirlooms, or anything that someone would want to steal?”Tru thinks for a moment, “No. I have my grandmother’s pink pearls, but they are in my mother’s safety deposit box. Outside of the necklace you made me, my other jewelry is only wort

  • The Dragon's Stone   It's just a scratch

The room is pitch black. There is no light anywhere. I hear something creak, but I can’t look around or figure its direction. Footsteps shuffle closer, but I can’t tell where they are.Suddenly, I feel something pierce my chest. It’s painful. I try to scream, but nothing comes out when I open my mouth. I begin to feel cold and can’t move my body. It sounds like someone is crying, but I can’t hear them. Between the cold and pain, I can’t focus on anything else. It becomes difficult to breathe. I start gasping for air and struggle for the slightest bit of oxygen. My eyes pop open, and I try to catch my breath. I sit up in bed and pull the blanket tighter around me. Looking over at the clock, I find it is only one in the morning. I let out a sigh and lay back down in hopes of trying to fall back asleep. The lighting crystals on my nightstand are flashing red. Concerned, I pick them up, “What’s wrong?”One

  • The Dragon's Stone   Secret Missions

TaranI add the lavender to the potion and watch as it changes the color into a glowing blue. I take a small vial and place it next to the others. They are all different healing remedies. I’m not sure which, if any, will help Alice. Nothing I found in the spellbooks or potion recipes sounds like her illness. So, I made different potions hoping a combination would work.I haven’t told Tru about trying to save her mother. Seeing her heartbreak when she heard about Alice hurt me in a way I’ve never felt before. Tru is close with her mother, and I want to give her more time with Alice. But I don’t want to give her false hope. I don’t want to make her believe there is a chance if this doesn’t work. Nothing I found matches what Alice needs, but I’m hoping the use of healing multiple parts cures her.I cross-checked everything to make sure the different medicines wouldn’t counter each other. Looking over at my gem, I ques

  • The Dragon's Stone   Taran's View After Getting Tru Part 1

TaranI finally have Tru back home with me. She wasn’t herself at first. It is clear she barely remembers our dreams, but she remembers enough to recognize me.I shouldn’t have threatened Tru about having my heir. I just needed the damn wall she built around herself gone. I needed Tru, my Tru, and I only knew one way to find her.The first time I ever saw Tru, really saw her, was our first time in that hotel. Somehow sex broke down our walls. It was always like that. Anytime that wolf hurt her, Cindy angered her, or she felt sadness of her mother, I found Tru during sex. It broke down every barrier. The same was true for me. Anytime the pressures or frustrations got to me, Tru knew how to break through to me.Our first time back together, Tru asked me to be gentle. It was unlike her. That’s when I noticed the fear in her eyes. I realized then how much Tru was hiding, not just from me, but herself. That is why I gave her a fantasy. There were minor differences, but the main part of Tru

  • The Dragon's Stone   Enchanted Pool

We walk back to the house. There is a small stairway on the other side of a large, empty room. We descend into a room where a pool resides. There are no windows, but stones in the wall seem to glow. I approach one, my fingers gently glide over it. The stone flickers. I hear music. The stones seem to be humming. All the stones flicker one by one, playing a melody that seemed so familiar, but I couldn’t place.“Now they are going to show off for you,” Taran says with amusement.I can’t help but smile. “What song is this?”Taran shakes his head, “I cannot hear them, I can only see them.”My smile fades. “Really?”Taran nods, “You were blessed by the spirits. You can see and hear things others cannot.”I shrug, “I’m not good with magic. I used to make smoke animals to entertain children, but their parents felt uncomfortable with it, so I stopped. Then I tried at home, but after a few mishaps, it was strongly advised that I didn’t continue”.“Show me,” Taran says.I feel slightly embarrass

  • The Dragon's Stone   You look like a king

We land on the beach near our house. I struggle to climb off Taran, but he uses his tail to help me. After Taran passes me the box, he steps away. “Wait,” I stammer.Taran pauses, watching me closely. I put the box on the ground. “I haven’t gotten a good look at you. This is the real you, right?” I asked gesturing towards him.A grumble, then Taran’s bends his head so his gaze meets mine. I extend my hand out to touch him but quickly recoil. “I’m sorry. I forgot that it is rude to pet someone.”Another grumble, followed by something gripping me around the waist. I’m pulled towards the dragon. If my hands were not in front of me then I would have slammed into him, face first.“You don’t mind me touching you?” I asked. Taran shakes his head. My fingers trace the red scales varying in hue. Some are bright red, some scarlet, other a blood red all with thin golden marbling. “You’re beautiful,” I whisper. I look up into Taran’s reddish-orange eyes. “And you’re warm. I assumed you would feel

  • The Dragon's Stone   Reunited with the family Part 2

“She used you to get to me?” I asked. David nods. A look of shame washes over his face. “I’m sorry you were put in that position,” I tell him.David nods, “I’m sorry I let her manipulate me.”Something inside me seems to break. Looking at Taran, I ask, “Will it ever stop?”Taran shakes his head, “No, but I’m never letting you go again.” Taran squeezes my hand, “That is why I made a home for us. I put wards around our home to protect you.”“It doesn’t end with me, does it? What about the heir you desperately want?” I demanded.“Without an heir, the dragons will die. They will fight for power until they kill each other, leaving the world open to all the night creatures to kill. The water, the ground, and even the air will become poisoned.” Taran’s eyes soften, “I know you’re worried about the future, but I promise you if we decide to ignore our destiny, the future is much worse.”I stare at Taran, “They will never be a child. Someone will always be trying to hurt them or take advantage

  • The Dragon's Stone   Reunited with the family Part 1

“Trudy-bug,” my father cries when he sees me. He hugs me so tightly that I can barely breathe. “I was worried you would never want to see me again.”“I’m sorry, Dad,” I say as tears start to stream down my face.“No. No. I’m sorry. I should’ve listened to you about Cindy,” my father said.“What happened?” I asked. My father shakes his head, “It’s not important now. All that matters is that you’re safe.” He motions towards a house, “Come, I will have everyone over soon to say hello.”Taran stands next to me after shifting back into his human form. My father smiles and offers him a hand, “Taran, thank you for bringing her home.”Taran accepts my father's hand, “Tru’s home is with me. Once she is settled, I will take her to learn from the spirits. She will likely be gone a year or more.”“You’re sending me away?” I asked surprised.Taran nods, “When I can no longer teach you, yes. I will visit you often.”“I am not losing another year with my family,” I replied.“We will not discuss this

  • The Dragon's Stone   I don't like flying

“I really don’t like flying,” I protest as Taran and I pack for the trip to my family’s island.“You were meant to soar, little dove.” Taran replies. His arms wrap around my waist from behind, “You are a mate to a dragon. Trust me, soon you will love being above the clouds.”I lean back against his chest. “What does my family think of all this?”Taran kisses the side of my head, “They don’t completely understand, but they know I will keep you safe at all costs.”“When will the dragons no longer see me as a threat? How long will we stay here?” I asked.I hear the smile in Taran’s voice. “Not even two days and you’re wanting to leave.”“It’s not that,” I argue. “I miss seeing people living their daily lives. Not cowering from me in fear or kissing up to me.”“The dragons will kiss up to you a lot, when they aren’t scheming your death.”I snort, “You forget I lived with wolves.”“One day, I will bow at your feet and beg for forgiveness at letting those animals take you,” Taran murmurs in

  • The Dragon's Stone   Punishment

Taran grabs my dress and tears it down the middle—the dress pools at my feet before I can react. Taran grabs my wrists and pulls me towards the bed. Using his body weight to hold me in place, he bends me over the bed, holding my wrist behind my back. I struggle to get away until his free hand comes down on my bottom, causing a terrible sting. The impact stops my struggle. With a gentle touch, Taran soothes my back cheek. His voice is calm, but stern: “No clothes in the bed, dove. I want to feel your soft skin against me when we are in bed. I would prefer you naked at all times, but I have compromised and even provided you with clothes.” Taran removes his hand before bringing it down on the other cheek.“Ow,” I cry. I’m sure Taran has left his handprint on both sides of my bottom. “I won’t wear clothes in bed again my dragon.”“Why should I believe you, dove?” Taran asked. His hand slowly moves down the back of my thigh, then up the inside. Without thinking, I spread my legs wider for

I sit at the foot of the bed, watching the storm. The bedroom lights are dim, and I can see the waves crashing onto the shore as the lightning flashes. My back faces the door to the hall as I stare out the window. “You’re not supposed to wear clothes in bed,” Taran says, causing me to jump. I didn’t mean to startle you,” he adds while walking toward me. He removes his clothes before sitting opposite me. Taran hands me a package wrapped in paper: “I brought you a present.”“Thank you,” I reply.I unwrap the package to find a magic book as Taran explains, “I know you didn’t get to practice a lot of magic in the last couple of years. If you are interested, I can help you.”“I didn’t know dragons could use magic,” I reply while flipping through the book.“You will surpass me in a few months, but I can use magic. Most dragons have a natural magic, and the royal dragons can use spells.” Taran shrugs, “We can make charms and potions too, but I’m not very good.”“I would appreciate any help y

  • The Dragon's Stone   Rolling Thunder

A loud crash of thunder jolts me from my sleep. The lightening brightens the room momentarily, and I find myself alone. A dim light seeps in from under the door. As I sit up, the room begins to brighten. I open the chest where Taran got the dress out and find that it is full of sundresses. I pick one and go out into the hall.Taran stands in the kitchen, cooking. He is dressed in a cotton shirt and board shorts. “Hello,” I say awkwardly.Turning towards me, Taran shows no emotion on his face. “Hello, dove. How did you sleep?”“I slept great until the thunder. What about you?”Taran is back, facing the food. “I didn’t sleep, there is much for me to do.”“What are you making? Can I help?” I offer.“It’s almost ready. Why don’t you set the table?”I nod and start looking for plates and utensils. “What do you want to drink?” I asked.“Just water,” he replies.I find glasses and fill them. Taran brings the food to the table, and we sit down to eat. “It smells nice,” I say with a smile.Tar
