The room is pitch black. There is no light anywhere. I hear something creak, but I can’t look around or figure its direction. Footsteps shuffle closer, but I can’t tell where they are.

Suddenly, I feel something pierce my chest. It’s painful. I try to scream, but nothing comes out when I open my mouth. I begin to feel cold and can’t move my body. It sounds like someone is crying, but I can’t hear them. Between the cold and pain, I can’t focus on anything else. It becomes difficult to breathe. I start gasping for air and struggle for the slightest bit of oxygen.

My eyes pop open, and I try to catch my breath. I sit up in bed and pull the blanket tighter around me. Looking over at the clock, I find it is only one in the morning. I let out a sigh and lay back down in hopes of trying to fall back asleep.

The lighting crystals on my nightstand are flashing red. Concerned, I pick them up, “What’s wrong?”

Surprised, I ask, “Is Tru in danger?” They flash. “Was someone lurking around here?” The crystals flash twice.Okay, so no one is physically around trying to hurt Tru. “Is she cursed?” The crystals flash twice again. “Are the answers in my cove?” They flash once. • The Dragon's Stone   Familiar

I wake up and notice Taran is gone. Letting out a sigh, I slowly get out of bed. At least I didn’t have any nightmares. Not knowing what else to do, I begin looking through dragon folklore. Though Taran and I have gone over things many times, I can’t help feeling like we are missing something. My searching doesn’t uncover anything new, so I look at one of the books Taran brought when flying me home. The book has spells and summarizes who, why, and when about the spells. I look at the summaries and find a name that sounds familiar. “Lyse Galno”I search the name on my computer and find nothing that matches. The name feels so familiar like I heard it in a story or something as a child. Would my mother know?I call my mother and am surprised that my dad answers the phone, “Hey princess, your mom is getting her treatment. Is everything okay?”“Yeah, everything is fine. I was trying to remember a bedtime s

TaranTru and I arrive at her parents. I do my best to seem present, but my mind is elsewhere. How do I reassure Tru that there is only her in my heart? If this girl does exist, I don’t know her or remember her. I never should’ve told Tru about what I found. I told Tru about the visions and journal because I feel there is a connection between someone knowing Lyse Galno and what I found. All the knowledge of the supernatural world is gone, yet someone knew of Lyse. The person spreading the stories of Lyse and the person behind what I found may be two different people, but I believe both will give me clues about what happened to the dragon stone.Tru and her dad go to organize something for Alice. I am sure Tru will take the time to ask her father about the stories of Lyse. I hope whatever she finds will help us find the stone and prove that the other girl doesn’t exist.“Taran?” Alice’s voice pulls me from my thou

I help my dad go through old boxes in the attic. Mostly it’s tubs of things my parents kept from when Mike, Dave, and I were children. As we go through the unlabeled boxes, my dad asks, “Tru, how does Taran treat you?”I smile as I think about Taran, “He’s very good to me, Dad.” My dad nods, but I see the hesitation on his face. “What’s wrong?”My dad sighs, “It’s just that the two of you are moving very quickly. Two months ago, you were dating Bryan, then immediately started dating Taran. Your mother and I tried to do some research on him, and we couldn’t find anything. We haired a private investigator, and they didn’t find anything on him. Nothing about his pilot's license, his title, or even his date of birth. Taran and I sit across from my parents. My father and Taran stare at each other strangely. “My mother made up the stories about Lyse Galno.” “Tell me about them. I find it odd that your mother remembered stories that no one else does. The name Lyse Galno doesn’t show up when you search it.” Taran says in a low voice. My father tenses, “What are you implying?”Taran relaxes a little, “Lyse Galno stories are from my country. No one remembers anything about me or my people, but your mother did. I need to know where she got the stories from so I can solve what happened to my family.”“The stories passed from generation to generation,” my father sounds annoyed.Taran looks skeptical, “So your grandmother told your mother?”My father nods, “Yes, stories about Lyse Galno the powerful, William Galno the great, and Gesina Galno the gentle. TaranTru drops me off with the suitcases, and I quickly put away the extra clothes. After a quick shower and a shave, I decided to do a few things to set the mood for us. Going into the kitchen, I pull the ingredient to make Tru’s favorite dinner. Since Tru said you shouldn’t cook naked, I throw on a t-shirt and pair of shorts that I can easily pull off later. Next, I start cooking by roasting potatoes first. I season them with oil, rosemary, and salt. Then I mix breadcrumbs and spices for the chicken breast. Once that is done, I coat the chicken in an egg mixture before covering it with the breadcrumbs. Finally, I put the chicken in the oven and began prepping the asparagus. After everything is in the oven, I go to Tru’s room. I have the lighting crystals glow dimly, almost like the room is lit by candles. Next, I set the table. Looking around, I try to think of something else I can do to impress Tru.The timer for the oven goes off as Tru en

We walk back to the house. There is a small stairway on the other side of a large, empty room. We descend into a room where a pool resides. There are no windows, but stones in the wall seem to glow. I approach one, my fingers gently glide over it. The stone flickers. I hear music. The stones seem to be humming. All the stones flicker one by one, playing a melody that seemed so familiar, but I couldn’t place.“Now they are going to show off for you,” Taran says with amusement.I can’t help but smile. “What song is this?”Taran shakes his head, “I cannot hear them, I can only see them.”My smile fades. “Really?”Taran nods, “You were blessed by the spirits. You can see and hear things others cannot.”I shrug, “I’m not good with magic. I used to make smoke animals to entertain children, but their parents felt uncomfortable with it, so I stopped. Then I tried at home, but after a few mishaps, it was strongly advised that I didn’t continue”.“Show me,” Taran says.I feel slightly embarrass

We land on the beach near our house. I struggle to climb off Taran, but he uses his tail to help me. After Taran passes me the box, he steps away. “Wait,” I stammer.Taran pauses, watching me closely. I put the box on the ground. “I haven’t gotten a good look at you. This is the real you, right?” I asked gesturing towards him.A grumble, then Taran’s bends his head so his gaze meets mine. I extend my hand out to touch him but quickly recoil. “I’m sorry. I forgot that it is rude to pet someone.”Another grumble, followed by something gripping me around the waist. I’m pulled towards the dragon. If my hands were not in front of me then I would have slammed into him, face first.“You don’t mind me touching you?” I asked. Taran shakes his head. My fingers trace the red scales varying in hue. Some are bright red, some scarlet, other a blood red all with thin golden marbling. “You’re beautiful,” I whisper. I look up into Taran’s reddish-orange eyes. “And you’re warm. I assumed you would feel

A look of shame washes over his face. “I’m sorry you were put in that position,” I tell him.David nods, “I’m sorry I let her manipulate me.”Something inside me seems to break. Looking at Taran, I ask, “Will it ever stop?”Taran shakes his head, “No, but I’m never letting you go again.” Taran squeezes my hand, “That is why I made a home for us. I put wards around our home to protect you.”“It doesn’t end with me, does it? What about the heir you desperately want?” I demanded.“Without an heir, the dragons will die. They will fight for power until they kill each other, leaving the world open to all the night creatures to kill. The water, the ground, and even the air will become poisoned.” Taran’s eyes soften, “I know you’re worried about the future, but I promise you if we decide to ignore our destiny, the future is much worse.”I stare at Taran, “They will never be a child. I should’ve listened to you about Cindy,” my father said.“What happened?” I asked. My father shakes his head, “It’s not important now. All that matters is that you’re safe.” He motions towards a house, “Come, I will have everyone over soon to say hello.”Taran stands next to me after shifting back into his human form. My father smiles and offers him a hand, “Taran, thank you for bringing her home.”Taran accepts my father's hand, “Tru’s home is with me. Once she is settled, I will take her to learn from the spirits. She will likely be gone a year or more.”“You’re sending me away?” I asked surprised.Taran nods, “When I can no longer teach you, yes. “I really don’t like flying,” I protest as Taran and I pack for the trip to my family’s island.“You were meant to soar, little dove.” Taran replies. His arms wrap around my waist from behind, “You are a mate to a dragon. Trust me, soon you will love being above the clouds.”I lean back against his chest. “What does my family think of all this?”Taran kisses the side of my head, “They don’t completely understand, but they know I will keep you safe at all costs.”“When will the dragons no longer see me as a threat? How long will we stay here?” I asked.I hear the smile in Taran’s voice. “Not even two days and you’re wanting to leave.”“It’s not that,” I argue. “I miss seeing people living their daily lives. Not cowering from me in fear or kissing up to me.”“The dragons will kiss up to you a lot, when they aren’t scheming your death.”I snort, “You forget I lived with wolves.”“One day, I will bow at your feet and beg for forgiveness at letting those animals take you,” Taran murmurs in

The impact stops my struggle. With a gentle touch, Taran soothes my back cheek. His voice is calm, but stern: “No clothes in the bed, dove. I want to feel your soft skin against me when we are in bed. I would prefer you naked at all times, but I have compromised and even provided you with clothes.” Taran removes his hand before bringing it down on the other cheek.“Ow,” I cry. I’m sure Taran has left his handprint on both sides of my bottom. “I won’t wear clothes in bed again my dragon.”“Why should I believe you, dove?” Taran asked. Taran hands me a package wrapped in paper: “I brought you a present.”“Thank you,” I reply.I unwrap the package to find a magic book as Taran explains, “I know you didn’t get to practice a lot of magic in the last couple of years. If you are interested, I can help you.”“I didn’t know dragons could use magic,” I reply while flipping through the book.“You will surpass me in a few months, but I can use magic. Most dragons have a natural magic, and the royal dragons can use spells.” Taran shrugs, “We can make charms and potions too, but I’m not very good.”“I would appreciate any help y

A loud crash of thunder jolts me from my sleep. The lightening brightens the room momentarily, and I find myself alone. A dim light seeps in from under the door. As I sit up, the room begins to brighten. I open the chest where Taran got the dress out and find that it is full of sundresses. He gently puts his hand on my chest and encourages me to lie back. I feel Taran slowly pulling up my skirt. Without thinking, I spread my legs for him. There is a hint of amusement in his voice, “You glisten.” Taran looks into my eyes. “It’s very beautiful.”We go back to kissing. Taran nips at my lips, causing me to let out a moan.
