ELENA
If I had thought seeing Luca was over for the day, I had been sorely mistaken because just as I had prepared to lay down and rest my sore muscles, a servant knocked on my door, informing me that Luca had asked to see me in his study.
Talk of bad timing.
I stood in the huge study, ignoring how massive it was and focused on the man in front of me. Arms crossed, I watched Luca move with calculated ease. He removed his jacket, unbuttoning his cuffs as he turned to me with a cold smirk.
“There are rules in my house, Elena,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “You will follow them.”
I arched a brow, refusing to show fear. Rules? Of course, a man like Luca had rules in his house. “I’m not your slave.”
His smirk deepened. “You’re my wife. That means you belong to me in every way that matters.”
My jaw tightened, but I remained silent. I had to pick my battles.
“First rule,” Luca continued, stepping closer. Yeah, he had to come into my space again. “You will respect my authority. I will not tolerate disobedience.” Oh, I had heard that one over and over again.
I lifted my chin. “And if I do?”
His blue eyes darkened. “You won’t.”
A shiver ran down my spine, but I refused to look away.
“Second,” he said, walking past me, “you do not leave this house without my permission. Your safety is my concern, whether you like it or not.”
My hands curled into fists. Who did he think he was to dictate how I moved? I was his wife, not his paid servant.
Luca continued. “Third, do not meddle in my business. What I do, who I deal with. It is not your concern.”
I scoffed. “I wasn’t planning on it.” I had already had enough of that with my father.
He turned back to me, his expression unreadable. “Good. Then this should be easy.”
“Fourth,” he continued, his tone becoming icier, “you will be present at all family events. Whether it’s a dinner, a gathering, or a meeting, you will attend. No arguments.”
I narrowed my eyes. “Why? To play the perfect wife?”
“To show respect,” Luca corrected smoothly. “And to remind everyone exactly who you belong to.”
I clenched my teeth but said nothing.
Was I nothing more than a mere trophy to him? It was always about me belonging to him!
“Fifth, you will not embarrass me or our union in public. If you have grievances, we handle them privately.”
I let out a bitter laugh. “Because appearances are everything, right?”
“In this world, yes.”
I shook my head, hating how logical his words were.
“Sixth, if you have an issue, you come to me first. I don’t want you running to anyone else, thinking you’ll find sympathy. Not even Don Alberto.”
My stomach twisted. “But he is my father?” Not like I had forgiven the man who had used me as a pawn in business, but still…
Luca exhaled, stepping closer until he was mere inches away. “You have me.”
I met his gaze, searching for mockery, but found nothing. I couldn't help but feel uneasy.
“Seventh, my bedroom is always open to you. But yours is yours, for now. Don’t mistake my patience for weakness.”
My breath hitched, but I kept my expression blank. I wouldn’t let him see how that rule affected me.
Did that mean we wouldn't be sharing a bedroom throughout our marriage? It was at the tip of my tongue to ask, but I reined it in.
Some things were best left unsaid.
“Eighth,” he went on, his voice turning darker, “you do not lie to me. I don’t care what it’s about. One lie, and there will be consequences.”
I swallowed but held his gaze. “And what happens if I do?”
I wasn't sure why or how I kept talking back to him when the man scared the hell out of me. But something in the way he spoke and made me feel just elicited this deep irritation in me that caused my tongue to grow loose. And the fact that it clearly infuriated him made me reel with joy inside.
He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “Don’t make me find out.”
Okay, maybe I needed to calm down a little and not provoke him further.
A tense silence stretched between us before he continued.
“Ninth, you will not try to escape. There is nowhere you can go where I won’t find you.”
A lump formed in my throat. “I wouldn’t give you the satisfaction.” So many fucking rules. Maybe I should have brought a damn pen and paper to remember all of them.
But I had the sinking feeling that I wasn't going to forget a single one.
Luca smirked, clearly amused by my fire. “Good.”
Then his expression turned serious. “Tenth and final rule, Elena.” He paused, looking straight at me. If only he was not the next thing to a fucking grenade, I would have said his eyes were beautiful.
The thought made me blink and try to look away, but Luca held my gaze, pinning me to the spot as I awaited his last rule. “No one touches what’s mine.”
A chill ran down my spine as I processed his words.
His gaze continued to hold mine, his meaning unmistakable. “That includes you. No one else lays a hand on you. Not a friend, not an enemy, not anyone. Understand?”
My breath became shallow. The possessiveness in his voice rattled me more than I wanted to admit. I hated how a part of me burned at the intensity of his words.
I wanted to talk back. Wanted to say something defiant to rile him up. He couldn't win just like that.
But words failed me.
In that moment, with us looking straight at each other, something seemed to give, and it was coming from me.
Luca said nothing, as if waiting for me to strike back, but I just couldn't do it.
In that moment, I knew, then and there, that he had power over me. He had won, and he knew it because a smirk tugged on his lips.
I forced myself to nod. “I understand.”
Luca studied me for a moment before stepping back, satisfied. “Good. Now, get some rest. Tomorrow, your life as my wife truly begins.”
With that, he turned and left the room, leaving me standing there, heart pounding, a mixture of rage and something far more dangerous coursing through my veins.
How had I landed in this situation?
Why did it feel like my life had just become a living hell, and this was just the beginning?
Every single one of Luca's ten rules played in my head, imprinting themselves permanently in my brain. And they mocked me. Each one of them.
I was his.
His for the taking.
His to do whatever it was he wished to do.
Just how had I gone and gotten myself into this mess?
A small laugh that had nothing to with that of amusement came out of my lips. I couldn't help it. Just a few days ago, I was literally plannig how my life would go, and now this?
Who did he even think he was?
Rules my ass.
He was there again, not in the shadows, but right at the forefront. My eyes widened at the sight before me. A sight I struggled to understand at that age. What were those men doing?Three women, dressed in nothing but little pieces of materials I had been told were called lingerie... lag... whatever... I couldn't remember the name, walked into the room and laid on the bed, arms entwining as they kissed each other. One of them looked straight at me, smiling as her companion slid her long fingers over her body.I could only swallow nervously as I stared at the sight before me.I wanted to leave. I didn't want to see.But the hand that held on to my small body pinned me down. "Please... let me go... please," I begged, squeezing my eyes shut as I struggled against the strong arms."Shut up, Luca, and watch how it is to become a man!" The deep voice above me bellowed.I forced my eyes open, looking over to see one of the women lay on her stomach just as a man came to stand behind her. In hi
ELENAThe table was full of different kinds of food once I reached the dining room, after minutes of pacing in my room and contemplating whether to go down or not.And yes, I had brushed my teeth again. At the head of the table, Luca sat with his head buried in his tablet, while one hand held onto his cup of what I assumed was coffee. And it seemed he liked his coffee plain black."Sit." His baritone commanded, without him raising his head to look at me.I didn't wait to be told again and grabbed hold of a chair that was a bit further down from him, but Luca cleared his throat, making me glance up nervously at him. "Sit next to me." And for effect, he kicked the chair on his right. On slightly shaky legs, I made my way over to him, plopping down on the seat."Eat."Gosh… he didn't have to be so bossy. But everything in front of me did look yummy, so I reached forward and poured myself a cup of hot chocolate, adding a good amount of sugar before bringing it to my lips to taste."Mmnnn…"
LUCAThe sickening crunch that echoed through the soundproof room was, to me, the cherry on top of my cake.My knuckles burned lightly from the impact, but I didn't care, sending it back into the man's jawline. "I can keep going all day, Luke, trust me," I hissed, hitting the barely conscious man again.Things had been going wrong for months now, and where I had thought I was close to finding out what in the world was crumbling my hard work, we had hit a dead end."I won't say shit! You can kill me if you like!" Luke yelled, spitting out blood from his battered lips, while I stood there, right in front of him. There was fear in the man's eyes, no doubt, but he knew, just like everyone in this room, that people like him had sworn to be loyal. But there was still a loophole. There just had to be."What did you find, Hakeem?" I asked the other man in the room, who stood behind me, out of sight, while I kept my gaze on the man tied to the chair in front of me."Nothing, Don Luca. They left
ELENA"Thank you, Rosetta," I said with a smile, waving at the housekeeper as she made her way out of the room, leaving me alone.Once the door was closed, I let out a sigh, then bit my lips before collapsing on the bed flat, on my back.Luca had certainly made a whole point of being away all day, not once showing his face or even letting me hear his voice. It was like he had disappeared right under my nose. Was this how it was going to be?This was only my first day as a married woman, and I already felt like I was losing my mind.My mind went to the reason I was here.Alberto had told me it was all to end the mafia war and also that being the wife of Luca De Santis meant so many benefits for my power-hungry father. But to what end?Was I going to be locked up forever in this gigantic mansion? My only highlight of the day had been meeting his sister, who, by the way, had also disappeared after promising to be back.Valeria had struggled to understand why Luca had a separate room, whic
ELENAEmbarrassment. And anger. Those were the emotions that clouded my vision as I stormed to the dining table where Luca sat comfortably. Too comfortably, like he hadn’t come into my room a few minutes ago, teased the hell out of me, then left me dry and hungry. For him.“What the hell was that?” I demanded, stopping just by his side.“What the hell was what?” Luca asked calmly, unfolding the napkin that was set in front of him so he could put it on his lap. He looked and sounded unfazed, irritating me further.“That! In my bedroom, Luca!” I hissed. “You can’t just come in there the way you did, do what you did, and then leave and pretend like nothing happened!”He sighed. “You mean, our bedroom? Because that’s our bedroom, and I can walk in there and do as I please....” Then he turned his head to me. “...to you. You are mine, remember? Mine to take, and mine to have.”That stopped me, but only for a moment. “No! You don’t get to play me like that!”A frown formed on his face. “Play
LUCA"That's enough," I hissed, finally fed up with whatever was going on at the table. As much as there was a little part of me that secretly enjoyed the banter, I couldn't help the swirl of jealousy making its way through me.And I knew I had no reason to be jealous. Not that I gave enough of a shit about Elena, but still…Alessandro turned to me and winked as we continued to eat. "So, when is the honeymoon? I am surprised you two came back to this boring house when you should be tangled up in some sheets on an island somewhere," he remarked.Sometimes, it was hard to explain how Alessandro's mind worked. My usually silent and nonchalant brother had been against the marriage from the start, seeing no reason why a marriage would help us win the war. Seeing him now, taunting Elena, was surprising, considering I had thought he would treat her with silence.I glanced at Elena, who looked like she was about to choke on her food in response to the question, and sighed. "Tomorrow. We will b
LUCA"We are here," Luca said as the car rolled to a stop in front of the most beautiful villa I had ever set my eyes on.For someone who had been planning for a long time to go on a trip, I had certainly done a bad job making my own dreams come true. I turned to Luca to see him turn off the engine of the car that had been waiting for us at the airport. He had taken the keys from the driver and told the man to go home. If he weren’t my husband, I would have certainly been scared for my life.Although that didn't mean much because my big and sexy husband could still... whatever."Do you own this?" I asked, unbuckling my seatbelt.Luca rolled his eyes, then nodded. "Yes. But this is the first time I am ever using it." And with that, he was out of the vehicle. My eyes widened, and I didn't wait for him to turn around before I was opening the door and catching up with him. "What do you mean you have never used this villa? This is beautiful!" I exclaimed as we made our way to the entrance.
ELENA"No!"I found myself stating, my voice, loud and as defiant as I felt inside."Enough with you stupid game, Luca! First, you take me, as your own part of an agreement I had no hand in, then you bring me to your home and throw your rules at me! Now, now you play with me, tease me, and discard me like I am a toy you can do what you like with, and I'm done with it Luca."My chin was up, and I stared him daggers, while he just casually sipped from his cup."And? What are you going to do about it? I mean, I call the shots here." Luca said easily, making me more angry.Gosh! I was sexually starved. And for a virgin, this was the highest form of arousal I had ever reached, and I was sick of it. Donavan had never made me crave being touched like Luca did, and Luca had barely done anything! That was what annoyed me the most.A thought bean to form in my head."No. We need to revisit those rules."His eyes fllled with interest. "Yeah? And what part do you want to revisit? Because it all s
ELENAI looked behind me, feeling a slight chill down my spine."Is there something wrong?" Samuel asked, looking in the direction I was looking at.I shook my head, blinking and turning back to continue towards where Luca had parked his car. He had called and asked me to meet him in front of his restaurant. I wasn't surprised though, since his new forte was removing me from work at any time of the say. This time though, I welcomed it. Anything but the humiliation I had gone through in that office with my father. The tests, came back negative. All three of them.I didn't understand why, but I felt disappointed too, but not for the same reasons Alberto was.Luca was leaning on the car, his features alert. "Alberto." he nodded, reaching out to shake my father's hand firmly. "Luca." My father replied.I cast my gaze down, waiting for them to say whatever it is they wanted to say to each other, but my name was mentioned. I looked up to see Luca casting me a concerned look. "Get in the ca
ELENA"You did not tell me you were coming." I hissed as my father guided me by my arm into my office. He pushed me inside, and I dismissed Samuel who looked ready to pounce."I don't have to tell you when I'm coming to my own office, dammit!" His tone was more biting than usual. "And tell you bodyguard to mind his damn business!"I looked at my father, then as Samuel who had not backed down. "It's okay, Samuel. Please just wait outside." I pleaded when he continued to stand in the doorway. "Really, it's okay."Unlike his normal aloof self, it took him a few moments before stepping away from the door. "I'll just be right here, ma'am." It was one of the few times I heard him speak.I smiled, then closed the door, before turning around to see my father smoking."That thing will kill you." I said distastefully as he took a deep puff, and massaged my arms where it ached.I had barely stepped out of a meeting with a ground supervisor, when he had literally ambushed me and dragged me all th
ELENAI woke up with a banging headache. My head and eyes hurt like hell. I blinked, but only winced as the pain intensified. With a painful grunt, I rolled over to the side to see that I still had every single item of my clothing from earlier, on. Even up to my shoes. How had I fallen asleep with my shoes on?It took sitting up to get the memories of what had transpired earlier between me an Luca, to come flooding into my foggy brain.I hissed and got to work, pulling off the shoes and clothes. "Ouch." I winced when the shoes came off. My feet looked swollen and had an angry shade of red. It hurt to look at. I wondered how it would feel to work in.This was all Luca's fault. How and why did I even like him again?I limped my way accross the room and into the bathroom, wincing with every single step I took. How had I been so careless to sleep of with my shoes!A glance at my reflection in the mirror almost had me screaming from how scary I looked. I hadn't cried, but my mascara had pe
LUCAI wasn't jealous.Luca De Santis could be anything... anything but jealous.I walked straight into the bar and pulled out a full bottle of tequilla and a glass cup. On a second thought, I ditched the glass cup and took a long hard swig, straight from the bottle. The biting taste of the alcohol was not enough to calm down the storm brewing inside of me, but it just had to surfice.I took another, then another, then another.I was in fact, jealous. It wasn't an emotion I wanted to associate with myself, but of course that little bautiful thing of a wife had gone and caused havoc in my head. When Samuel had texted me an update I had almost exploded. I hadn't even bothered with the fact that I was in a meeting with my brothers and a client. I had stormed out, with Alessandro opting to follow me to make sure I didn't do anything stupid while Dante had decided to stay back to finish up with the client. The meeting was already ended anyway. The moment I had walked in there and seen the
ELENAThe car ride was silent.I kept my face glued to the window and my gaze fixated on the buildings as they passed by. Anything but the man sitting on the driver's seat next to me.Luca had ordered Hakeem to go with Samuel ans Alessandro, and had taken the steering wheel. From the side mirror, I could see the other car behind us, matching Luca's speed.I was concerned with the speed at which he was driving, hence the seatbelt I had wrapped around me three seconds in. But I would rather cut my tongue, than talk to him.We arrived, and the gates to the mansion were opened, and Luca drove in. For the first time since I arrived the building once again seemed unappealing to me.Of course he had lied when he had told Theo we had somewhere to be. He just wanted me home.I didn't wait for the car to stop completely before I was hurling myself up the stairs and straight to my bedroom. My intention was to lock the door once I was in, and seeth for however long I wanted, but the thunderous st
ELENAI looked at my empty plate with both embarrasment and utter satisfaction. The moment the food had arrived, I had known I had lost our bet because the aroma, the look, the taste.. oh dear heavens. It felt like I had missed my calling bacause I was certainly supposed to be a food blogger or something.Thank goodness there was nothing on my own side of the bet because I was a sore looser. The waiter cleared out plates and asked if we wanted dessert to which I declined for obvious reasons. Theo asked for some wine, and waited till the waiter left, before turning to me. His eyes sparkling. "Don't bother rubbing it in my face. I am a sore looser. I admit that. And... yes, you have good taste." I told him, before he could say anything. Theo Hayes definitely looked like the type that won't let things slide easily, but I was taking my chances. He pouted slightly. "I wanted to say it's been long I saw a woman so comfortable in her skin she literally enjoyed her food so much that she fini
ELENA Two weeks after the opera, and the images were still on my mind. I looked out the office window in my new office and sighed. The view was spectacular, given the sight if the city below. Below, but it was nothing compared to the view I had from the De Santis estate. Luca had been so busy the past week, that I barely ever saw him, except when he crept into my bed at night. He never stayed though. He held me in his arms, but I always heard the door open and close, just as I was falling asleep. I couldn't deny the fact that I liked him. Despite it all, I liked him. But the man was keeping to his boundaries. There was a knock on my door, and I sighed again, then took a seat just before Samuel opened the door for Theo Hayed. The man already had a smile plastered on his face as he walked in. Like he had the best news to share. "Elena De Santis." Theo said, plopping down on the seat opposite from him, even before I told him to. I hadn't seen Theo since after the very first day
ELENA A few minutes in and the whole house opera house was quiet, and only the sound of the most angelic voice I had ever heard, and instruments, could be heard. She was singing about long lost love and pain. And for the first time since I got married, I actually thought about my relationship with Donavan, and how it had ended. Every pitch, struck a painful cord in my heart, and I felt myself shift a bit from Luca, feeling my throat get clogged. I had experienced heartbreak in the most embarrassing way possible. Yet, here I was, lusting after a man I had sworn to hate. But maybe lust and hate could go together. The woman raised a hand up, her pitch going in the same direction, and the song suddenly took a dark turn. It turned into something really... sensual.. I looked at the hand that had been on my thigh all through, and watched as it squeezed my flesh a bit tighter. "Why did you move?" Luca suddenly asked, his eyes still trained ahead at the performance. I swallowed. "N
LUCAThe opera house was too posh for my liking. I hated that they had chosen this specific location. Everything seemed too delicate and eligant. Like they were trying too damn hard."Seems like someone overdid them selves." Alessandro remarked, rubbing under his nose and spotting the most unimpressed expression I had ever seen on him. 'I really wish you would have just left me alone.""And enjoy all this on my own? Hell no." I mocked, not paying a glance to anyone, and instead focused on getting to our sky boxes. I could already imagine Elena waiting for me, with Dante. The thought of seeing her brought a strange shiver of excitement to my stomach."Oh... there it is.." Alessandro walked towards the private elevators that led to each box. "I will be next door." He winked, and walked into his, while I pressed the button for mine and waited. "Boss." Samuel's voice came from behind, and I frowned as I hadn't even noticed him before. "Shouldn't you be up there, waiting with her?" I ask
