Selene’s POV
“Mom, where’s Dad? You said he’d be here before my birthday started, but I can’t find him anywhere,” Ella whined, tugging on the hem of my dress. Her big, tear-filled eyes stared up at me, searching for answers I didn’t have. The weight of guilt pressed down on my chest. Crouching to her level, I prepared myself to tell another carefully crafted lie. “Baby, Dad called. He said he’s on his way,” I murmured, trying to sound convincing. Her little brows furrowed. This was the second time I’d spun this tale, and I could see the doubt creeping into her innocent gaze. Still, she clung to a fragile thread of hope. “You know your dad wouldn’t miss your birthday, right? You’re his little princess, his favorite girl in the whole world. He’ll be here.” I stroked her soft hair, pressing a kiss to her forehead. She nodded, but the sadness in her eyes remained. “Okay…” “Why don’t you go play with your friends?” I said, forcing cheer into my voice. “They’re waiting for you, and I don’t want you to miss the fun.” “Everyone!” I called out, “It’s time to sing for the birthday girl and share the cake!” The room erupted with excited cheers, and Ella’s friends ran over to pull her back into the festivities. As she disappeared into the crowd, my wolf growled low with hate in my mind. ‘Tell her the truth. Tell her he’s not coming.’ ‘No, Alexander will come. He’s just busy and maybe lost track of time.' I replied to her, but more like convincing myself. I had called him several times before now, and it had gone straight to voicemail. Where the hell could he be? What could be more important than his daughter's birthday? I slipped into the kitchen, away from the noise, and dialed his number again. “Alex, if you can hear this, it’s the sixth voicemail I will be leaving. Please, Ella needs you here. I need you here. Please. Just… just come.” I felt my voice break before ending the call. I had been holding the tears for so long now, but it was just too much to handle. For months, Alex had been so cold to me. He barely spoke to me unless it was about an errand or about Ella, and even then, his words were curt. He didn't touch me; he didn’t smile at my joke; he never reciprocated any attempt I made to rekindle his emotions. But at least today wasn’t about me. It was our daughter's birthday; the least he could do as a father was to be here. Swiping my eyes dry, I walked out of the room with the cake. The children were singing around the table, and Ella was smiling and dancing with her friends, carefree and radiant. It was beautiful. I would not miss it if the world were ending outside. Alex should feel that way as well, about his only child. “Who wants cake?” I called, holding up the tray. The kids cheered and crowded around, their energy infectious. I handed out slices, grateful for the distraction. That’s when I noticed one of the kids leaning on the Alpha’s statue in the corner. It wobbled precariously, the heavy stone base shifting on the uneven floor. “Get out of the way!” I immediately screamed, shifting to my wolf form to push her out of the way before the statue hit her. Pain shot through me as my weakened legs gave out. I collapsed to the floor, but not before shoving the child to safety. The statue crashed into the table, splintering wood and scattering debris. Most times I forget how bad the legs of my wolf were. I let out a silent sigh. My back sagged to the floor in exhaustion as I shifted back to my human form. ••• “Daddy didn’t come,” Ella said softly as she sat beside me. Her voice was quiet, resigned, and it broke me. The party eventually ended, but Alex never showed. “No, baby, he didn’t,” I admitted, my heart shattering into pieces. But before the tears could fall, I forced another smile. “But guess what? He called me earlier. He said he has a special present for you at his office. He wanted to give it to you without your friends around, so it’s extra special. Should we go see him?” “Really?” her face lit up. I faked a smile as I lied through my lips, “Yes! Let’s drive over to Dad's office, shall we?” “Yay!” She hopped down from her chair and then tugged on my fingers. “Let’s go, Mom! Dad will be waiting.” She grabbed my hand, bouncing with excitement, and I let her pull me toward the door. My wolf was silent now, simmering with quiet anger. For months now, the Alpha had been so detached that my wolf felt so weak and resentful, leaving us more vulnerable than ever before. I drove us to Alex’s office, calling him repeatedly along the way. Each unanswered call made my stomach twist tighter. What would I tell Ella if he wasn’t there? “Wait here, sweetheart,” I said when we arrived. “Mommy will go get Dad.” I left her in the lobby and walked toward his office, my heels clicking against the polished floor. Two of his colleagues stood outside the door, shifting uncomfortably when they saw me. “Luna, please—” “Move.” Before they could stop me, I heard a woman’s voice—a laugh. And then his voice, low and familiar, “Come and kneel down here, baby, let me taste your naughty…” My heart dropped. I pressed my ear to the door, and her voice became unmistakable. Natasha. My sister. I burst through the door without thinking. “What!” Alex jerked from his seat in horror as I entered. Natasha scrambled to cover herself, but it was too late. Her clothes lay in a heap on the floor, and she sat on his desk, her face flushed and smug. Unbelievable! “Alex? Natasha?” Lost for words, I walked towards them in disbelief. “It’s not what you think, sister; I promise, it’s not what you think,” said Natasha as she picked up her clothes. “What are you doing here? You are meant to be at home with your child,” Alex snapped, as if I were the one out of line. “Our child, you mean? And you asked about what I am doing here?” My voice rose as the words spilled out, trembling with anger. “What are you doing here? With her?” Natasha had wanted everything I owned! She wanted my life so desperately, stealing whatever she could—my parents’ affection, my belongings, and now my husband? Did she even remember that she’d once refused Alex? When our father first proposed the political match, she scoffed at the idea. Back then, Alex wasn’t the Alpha yet, and Natasha deemed him beneath her. They’d pushed me into marrying him instead—the lesser daughter, the backup plan. And now? Now that he was Alpha, she wanted him too? I’d been so naive, chalking up Alex’s recent coldness to stress or a passing mood. How foolish I was! “What more do you want, Natasha?" I yelled at her in pain and anger. “Selene, it’s not what you think,” Natasha said softly, taking a step toward me. I recoiled, stepping back before she could touch me. She stumbled, more dramatically than seemed necessary, and landed on the floor with a cry. “Ouch my legs!” She wailed, clutching it like she’d been struck. It wasn’t a new sight to behold; she had always done this. Always! “What have you done?” Alex’s voice was sharp as a blade. He pushed past me, dropping to his knees beside her as though I didn’t exist. “I just wanted to apologize,” Natasha whimpered, her eyes glistening with tears as she clung to him. “She pushed me!” “I didn’t even touch her!” I shouted, my hands shaking. “She fell on her own!” “Apologise to her now,” he snarled. “What? Are you serious? She’s lying!” “You are so heartless, even to your pregnant sister.” Pregnant. I staggered backwards. ‘Impossible,’ my wolf snarled, her fury mixing with disbelief. My eyes narrowed back to Alex, desperate for some sign that this wasn’t real. But he wasn’t looking at me. He was cuddling Natasha, his face softening as he comforted her. “She’s pregnant... with your child?” “Yes.” His answer was simple, spoken with no hesitation. No regret. “Natasha carries the next heir.” My heart broke into a million pieces so small I couldn’t even feel the pain yet. I stared at my sister, who now clung to him like a prideful wife; she was also unremorseful about it! “I’ve always wanted an heir,” Alex said, his tone steady and almost... proud. “And Natasha has given me that.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead, not sparing me a glance. “If you wanted an heir so badly,” I choked out, tears stinging my eyes. “Why didn’t you try with me? Why?” He sighed, rolling his eyes as though the question were beneath him. He didn’t answer. Instead, he lifted Natasha into his arms, setting her on the table as though she were something fragile and precious. The way he looked at her—the tenderness, the care—it was a look I hadn’t seen directed at me in years. “Mummy!” Ella's voice echoed from the lobby; she was approaching. I quickly wiped my eyes, forcing myself to compose what was left of me. She couldn’t see this. “You know what, Alex, whatever you want to say, we’ll handle it later at home.” I closed my eyes, drew in a shaky breath, trying to ignore the painful howl from my wolf. “Please. Ella is coming; let’s put this aside. I told her you would be giving her a gift; that’s the least you can do; it’s her birthday.” He turned to face me, and for a second, I saw the look of a father who at least had love for his first offspring and only daughter. “If you don’t do it for me today, do it for her,” I continued, “she deserves the love and respect as Luna's daughter." The look I had seen on his face disappeared, and it was instantly replaced by contempt. “More like the daughter of my biggest mistake!”Selene’s POV "What did you just say?" I asked, disbelief making my voice tremble. I had to have misheard. He couldn’t have said those words. Not Alex, not the man I’d stood by through everything. But my wolf, silent and shrunk in disgust, confirmed it. He had said it. “Did I say something wrong? You are useless; a Luna with a disabled wolf isn’t worth the position, and you know it,” he continued. His words felt like a slap, but the sting didn’t stop there. Natasha, ever the opportunist, chimed in with a smirk. “Don’t make a fuss about it, Selene; he isn’t telling a lie; you are indeed a disabled wolf.” “Finally showing your true colors, huh? Natasha, you have no right to say anything here. And you, Alex, calling me a disabled wolf after everything I’ve done for you? After I stood by you when everyone thought you couldn’t lead? I defended you. I took on the hits, even got poisoned and stabbed by assassins, for you!” I cleaned my eyes once more, but the tears just kept on falling
Selene’s POV Alexander meant what he said. He had the guards lock Ella in her room, forbidding her from seeing her friends and taking away her toys. My sweet, spirited girl, confined like a criminal. I stayed with her that first night, listening to her cries and pleas until they gave way to exhausted whimpers. By the time dawn broke, she had developed a fever. It only got worse. On the second night, her tiny body was wracked with shivers, her cheeks flushed with an unnatural crimson. I held her close, whispering soft reassurances I wasn’t sure I believed anymore. My baby needed help! Panic rising in my chest, I ran to the guards stationed outside. “Please!” I begged, gripping the nearest one by the arm. “Get the pack healers. Tell them the Luna commands their presence immediately! My daughter is sick—she needs help!” The guard shifted uneasily. “I’m sorry, Luna. The Alpha’s orders stand. He said no interference—” “She’s a child!” My voice cracked. “She’s your princess! Are
Selene’s POV “What?! What do you mean, what’s wrong with my baby?” I burst into the room, panic clawing at my chest. The healers stood motionless, their heads bowed, refusing to meet my gaze. Their silence suffocated me. “My Luna… she’s in…” “Speak up!” I roared, the desperation in my voice echoing off the walls. “She’s in a coma,” one of them finally mumbled, barely audible. “It’s… severe.” My world tilted. I staggered, clutching the doorframe for support as my eyes darted to Ella’s still, fragile body on the bed. My baby girl, my heart, lay motionless, her tiny chest barely rising. “Her treatment was delayed... There was nothing we could do in time.” Delayed. The word struck like a whip, and I knew exactly who was to blame. “What’s going on here?” Natasha said in a whisper as she and Alexander walked into the room. That was it. The dam of my restraint shattered. I lunged at her, grabbing her by the collar before she could feign innocence. “You are the reason! It’s all bec
Selene’s POVTwo days.It had been two days since I last saw the break of dawn, two days since I heard the voice of my little princess calling me "mommy." I was weak and unwilling to let my faith die.My body sagged on the floor, unable to stand anyone. I had bruises on every inch of my body, an impact of hitting the metal gate so much that my head had bruises as patches of dried blood.I had cried, I had prayed, I had begged and fought for two days with no hope of coming out of here. Alexander meant it when he said he was going to punish me for a crime I didn’t commit. He meant it when he said he was going to make my life miserable.I refused to let the idea sink in, as I forced myself up again, my sore knees crawling on the floor while I dragged myself to the gates of the dungeon, my bloody hands wrapped around the rusty bars of the cell room.“Is anyone there! please… just get the Alpha for me. I need to know where my baby is." I couldn’t cry or yell, but I knew they could hear me
Lucian’s POV “Mate?” The word echoed in my head, clawing at my sanity. It couldn’t be true. She was mated to my brother! Alexander, he married her because she chose him over me. How could she possibly be my mate? “I felt it,” my wolf, Escarnor, growled, smug, and relentless. I stalked through the pack corridors, my chest tight with anger. The air was thick with the stench of betrayal, the walls steeped in memories I had spent years trying to forget. Her scent lingered here, winding through the halls. It was maddening. Intoxicating. Six years. I returned to this wretched pack, not with the aim to rescue Selene. I didn’t expect that. My only purpose was to take back what was stripped from me. Alexander might wear the title of Alpha, but we both knew who it rightfully belonged to. He had lied, manipulated, and cheated his way into power. I was going to make sure he went on his knees. The plan had been calculated. Infiltrate the palace in disguise, assess the state of
Selene's POV The dungeon was suffocatingly silent. It was late at night. And over six hours since I had last seen him. Part of me started to believe I’d imagined it, that maybe I’d conjured him out of desperation. But the greasy plate and half-empty can of water at the edge of the cell told me otherwise. He had been here. I saw Lucian. My arms wrapped around my knees as I tried to still the ache in my chest. Six years ago, the pack’s seer declared Lucian a threat, claiming the goddess herself had demanded his imprisonment. If he wasn’t contained, she warned, our pack would face unimaginable suffering. And like the fool I was, I didn’t listen. I was young and reckless, following my heart instead of reason. I trusted him when he said he cared for me, when he whispered promises of escape, freedom, and a life far from the suffocating grasp of the pack—and my parents. But when the moment came, he chose a life without me. I hugged my knees tighter. He made a fool of me, he ridicul
Selene’s POV His hard palm came crashing on my face, fast and hard, immediately sending me to the floor. I shuddered as the pain spiralled through my body, the room rotated around me, and I felt nauseous. I had tried maintaining my composure, but I vomited right there; half of it’s content was blood.I was pulled to my feet and pinned against the wall; my hands were held apart beside me; a guard brought out a dagger and shoved it into my palm; therefore, pinning my hands to the wall, a blaring scream escaped my lips. The same action was done to my other hand; I could not take it anymore, and I let myself cry. I could not move my hands, and the silver knife burnt my skin. Alex held my jaw up; he passed a menacing grin towards me, but in mere seconds my vision blurred with tears."Oh, Selene, you wouldn’t have gone through this pain if you had answered, but somehow you found a way to complicate things for yourself. Now I will ask you one more time, Where is your daughter, and who is you
Selene's POV The pain was nonexistent for a blissful minute; I couldn’t feel anything anymore. I saw my daughter in the playground; she was going up and down the seesaw. I could hear her laughter echoing in my mind. She looked so beautiful.I remembered that day; she just had her hair done, and she was excited to show it to her friends in the pack. I added ribbons and flowers while styling it. She felt like the Alpha’s daughter that day, and I could already tell from the look in her eyes that she was proud of it.‘Mummy! Come, join me!’ She ran towards me, her little hands holding one of my fingers, She tried her best to pull me towards the seesaw; it was too small for me, but I didn’t tell her because I wanted her to be happy, so I sat on the other edge, I used my legs to propel us up and down, and while I found it so inconveniencing, I couldn’t help but hear adore her giggle. Slowly, I was brought back to my reality.‘Hang in there, Selene, don’t sleep, stay awake!’ My wolf said
Selene’s POVWhat does he mean by his boss?My brows furrowed in utter confusion, and I pulled my legs back. I pushed the drinks away maybe I wasn’t hearing properly because I might have drunk a little bit too much for my liking.Casper was the boss, or was I lied to? “Who’s is your boss?" I asked whilst trying to curb the noise that disturbed my thought process, he narrowed his eyes at me like I was supposed to know who his boss was, but I didn’t, and I was already worried. It felt like my little charade was busted.“You are so cute, he sent me here to retrieve you; follow me.”Retrieve? What was I?The man stood up, and I followed him like my life depended on it. I was starting to sense he wasn’t the Casper I was looking for, but he seemed so tall and elegant that anyone who was in my place would mistake him for this mafia who was supposed to rule the crime world.I followed him through the paths that led to rooms in the house, it was vacant compared to the rest of the rooms, and
Selene’s POV I was stunned by his tattoo first before any part of him caught my attention, like his wide build and his tattooed head and lack of jewelry on his body. His charisma had me staring just to make sure he was the same person I was looking for. I didn’t know his name, but something in me had an inkling that he might be Casper.Joan had described him from her little details she had picked up from Lucian’s idea of what he looked like; he would look like every human, but she said something about being tall, just like Lucian himself, but looking at the man before me, his height was descent. Not the average human, but not as tall as Lucian either, but he might as well be the one I was looking for because the guards seemed to hold him in high regard compared to the other guests who were here. When he came closer to me, I was drawn to the concept of meeting a man with such power over crime that it was only right to make the best first impression.I had subconsciously prompted mysel
Selene’s POV I went back to my hotel after everything. I and the doctor had lunch that day it was two days in a row, and we had lunch together. He had tried to ask me about my family, which I told him about.Joan properly educated me on my supposed origin, and I did the rest myself. Now that was over, it was time to get my life ready. Casper would be at his home now, probably accepting visitors.Joan told me the celebration wasn’t like ours, it was an overnight thing, where they celebrate on the given day to the next year, and it meant I wasn’t going to have a good sleep either tonight. Now I was standing before the mirror with a bag on my shoulder that could barely hold anything in it, it had barely anything but some ward of cash, but very little to nothing. Not even enough space for a lip gloss against the cold. It was almost useless, but I was recommended it in the store when I went to get clothes, and Joan had recommended these kinds of dresses to.Now I stood there knowing if I
Joan’s POV With the man on the bed and my legs crossed, I watched him get treated, if Selene was here, he would be walking like nothing happened in less than thirty minutes. It was suffocating not being able to reach out to her, and to make it worse, she had to come back today or tomorrow else Lucian would lose his mind. It kept on coming back to me, it was the first time I lied to Lucian about her wellbeing, and I had dragged this little girl sleeping in my arms. I stood up from the bed and walked out of the room. I needed to clear my mind before I combusted.“Mate.” My heart sprang with delight as I turned to the merely empty corridors of the ward, and that was when I saw a man standing there, he had his hands in his pocket. His hands waved at me.The bond shimmered in our eyes again, and my grip on Ella’s body tightened. I feared I would drop her if I wasn’t careful enough."Hi,” he said."Hello,” I responded, barely able to hold a proper smile. He wasn’t just any man, he was the
Joan’s POV Lucian had left and I was in the pack alone with little Ella, she was on my lap as we watched the rest of the pack build their houses, I wasn’t going to lift a finger why?Lilac demanded that I stay in the pack house with Lucian and Ella since we were special guests, which was also good because right now I will lose my mind if I had to lift a finger to do anything.Secondly I know a lady who likes a man she can’t have and she was keeping me solely because she wanted to ask me questions about Lucian. She wanted to ask me if I was the one that Lucian loved. I wasn't but I was willing to harness the privilege. While I sat there thinking about Lucian and all he was going through, Ella played with my hair.“Joan I wanted to tell uncle Lucian that mummy wasn’t around, that she wasn’t back in the truck but I didn’t.” I patted her head.“You are a really smart girl, don’t worry your mom will be back in two days.”“Uncle Lucian would be back in two days too,” she chirped in, I nodd
Lucian’s POV I wanted to go to Joan’s reserve and take Selene, but Joan volunteered to go. I didn’t know how to feel today. I was excited and I was optimistic.Selene was found and fine. Same with Ella who was nope resting on my chest, she refused to let me sleep alone, and after sharing the same room with her at night. I didn’t know what peace felt like till I woke up after last night.I didn’t have a nightmare. The pain that came with my existence didn’t seem so bad after all and this early just crawled on my chest and just laid there.“Uncle Lucian, are you sick?” She asked.“Yes.” I said.“Mom told Joan that you are sick and you don’t want her to heal you.” Yes Selene would say that, but how does she think she could save me, if she does she would take my position and she would die, somehow she didn’t think about that.“Mom would be sick if she heals me, so I have to keep her safe.” I said in the plain way possible, Ella went quiet for a while, I looked at the wall clock, lilac w
Selene’s POV I surveyed the surroundings, the guards stood at the gates watching me with a curious eye. Like it was some kind of thief. They look pretty normal, but then again I would ask who is a known thief being glorified like this, can he be apprehended? Or ch asked out of the state if he can’t be apprehended by rehab rulers of the city, everyone knew he was a thief he was a thief and they still let him leave.I checked the sides. People were moving freely along the side of the street but I was the only one who had remained stagnant, and one of the guards had proceeded to walk toward me.I didn’t move, I let him walk to me and stand before me.“What are you doing here young lady?” He asked if he grabbed my hands, no one touched me like that, I felt violated. But in a space of things this man was bigger than me, he could apprehend me if he wanted.“I am new to town, saw this place and it looks beautiful.” I said and they shoved me backward, I stood my ground if step was here and
Selene’s POV After listening to what Joan recorded, I didn’t know how to react to the feeling in my heart. It was beautiful, it was painful and as I listened to it over again I could tell she was holding tears from falling and it made the moment even more beautiful.Joan’s as everything. The record lasted for about seven hours, till she finished an entire book. I stayed up all night deranged in tears as I wrote the full sentence down.By noon I could finally say something, and I could understand some of the things the doctor had said throughout the day. And as embarrassing as it sounded I might as well have been stupid all this while because most of the things he wrote on the board I could finally pick them up.He did so much to talk to me, and I had used my literacy to stress him out, so today I wanted to love around town, I would visit the mall where I will be getting my clothes and I would visit the hospital where he treated people. At least I knew his name. Jude carpenter.I took
Joan’s POVI panicked, what if someone has taken Lucian, what if he got attacked where is everyone in the pack they were all supposed to be here where are they?“Chief!” Ella noticed my work and she came up to me, “uncle Lucian.” She called out. After so much screaming and shouting we noticed we were viewed as odd in the pack and everyone was looking at us weirdly.I walked up to one of the pack members. “Where’s the chief? Did anything happen to him?” She waved her head. “The chief went to drop some of the pack members at the crescent pack, where the new female Alpha just took one be from her father, we are all going to stay there for three weeks.”Pike…Relief coursed through me, like a calm breeze it soothed my flaming skin. I staggered backward, Ella held me down, she stretched her hands for me to carry her which I did.I didn’t know if I should go to lilacs or just stay here and wait for him, it would be hectic going back to lilac pack mostly that I wasn’t going alone. So I de
