Alex's POV

Cold wind rushed and tangled in my hair, it hit my skin and chills raced through, going deep down till they reached that wild muscle beating at my chest, they engulfed it from all sides, wrapping it in a cold blanket, trying to clog the veins from pumping all that blood, trying to numb it from feeling everything so deep.

Silently, I stood by the car's door, waiting for my breathing to even, waiting for that fog wrapping around my brain to fade away. I just needed it to stop because I can't make sense of all these feelings brimming at my chest, I just can't...I never was able to. I can't deal with this pain, because it's much more than anything I ever felt.

It's intense.

It's physical.

I can feel every cell in my body resisting through it, trying to fight before it loses control and just collapses. I fisted my hand, doing my best not to lose my shit, trying to keep from coming unglued right here in the middle of the day.

I let one feeling take over my senses, the only one th

Two weeks later...Alex's POV"Oh..look how cute he is," I said as my eyes fell on Chase, his eyes were closed and his head resting on Ashton's chest, peacefully sleeping.Cara turned to me and her eyebrows pulled together, "Ashton or Chase?"I shot her a glare to which she innocently shrugged as we made our way further inside the hospital's hall. Ashton's head was turned to the other side, his hand resting on the back of Chase's head, gently stroking it. At the sound of our footsteps, he turned his head and his eyes fell on us. They flicked back to Chase when he stirred in his arms. When we stopped right by their side, Chase's eyes slowly glided open and he looked up at us. He brought his small fist to his eye and rubbed at it, he sniffled and more tears gathered in his eyes. I immediately bent down and took him in my arms, he willingly came, his arms found their way around my neck and he rested the side of his head over my shoulder. I ran my hand through his hair and softly asked, "

Cara's POVMy heart skipped a beat or maybe two. It flattered rapidly as I grabbed his wrist in my hand, my fingers wrapped themselves so tight over his skin refusing to let go. My head cocked up in shock, my eyes wide; disbelief, fear, anger, and too many other mixed emotions clouding them.I jerked my head with a harsh shake. My teeth grinding against each other trying so hard to keep my fear from spurring forward. Raging brown eyes stared down at me and his lips pressed against each other before his throat bobbed and he swallowed hard, trying to shove it all back down as always.Steady air left his nose before he ever so calmly said, "Get out."I shook my head, my fingers only tightened over his wrist telling him that I am not going anywhere. The muscles of his jaw worked, he tried to pull his hand out of my grip but he couldn't. I have never held into something that hard; as if I am clinging onto the last thread of hope binding us together. He jerked his face away for two anguishe

  • The Death of Me   Chapter 48 - The sun, the sea and the sky

Alex's POVIt was beautiful. The way the sun casted its golden rays upon the clouds, turning them bright red; fire red.Looking towards the horizon, I could vividly see the fiery red orb slowly dip into the ocean as though engulfed by it. Mesmerized, I watched as the leaving sun dyed the heavens a bright orange and turned the ocean a deep blood red.I sucked into a deep breath as I pulled my knees up and crossed my arms over them before i rested my head on the top. The side of my temple touched the skin of my arm while my eyes stayed focused on the scenery ahead of me.I liked this place. I liked this house. I liked it here. His absence allowed a different type of freedom to rush through my veins. His absence gave me peace..something i didn't realize i was craving this long. His absence — i closed my eyes and took in a fresh gulp of air — allowed me to finally breathe.A hand on my shoulder pulled me out of my trance. It startled me, for a moment, it even scared me. I shook that thoug

  • The Death of Me   Chapter 49 - I am here to make a deal

Alex's POVLife is like an unwritten book, where you get to be the star of your own story, crafting it day by day.And like any other book, as you travel through the pages, it's the highs and lows that keep you - the reader - enthralled, making the tale worth telling. When you hear stories of such sort, they stick to your mind in a way. The bad moments, the troubles and the twists are the ones that get stored in the long-term memory. The happy moments make you smile as you read through but they never stick, for happiness is a quite emotion that doesn't make a fuss in its wake. The realization that flashed in her eyes at the name I just mentioned, confirmed my theory. He was a man with a story worth telling. A story she couldn't forget even after all these years."You remember him, don't you?" I asked. Her eyelids dropped for a second and air heaved from her chest before she nodded her head, "In my career, along the way, there are cases that you just can't forget. Nikolas is definitely

  • The Death of Me   Chapter 50 - Dude, you're embarrassing me

Nikolas's POVI've never been afraid of 'monsters' per-say. I do believe they exist, I just don't think they are furry and live under the bed and in the closet. You see, I knew a monster once.I knew him so well that eventually, I turned into him.My monster didn't hide under the bed, no, he was everywhere. He was there when I woke up and there when I went to sleep. He took over my reality and if that wasn't enough, he also took over my dreams.I thought it was all gonna come rushing back like it always did when I get a mere glimpse of him. I even waited for it to happen, but it didn't. I waited for the fear to take over my senses and tighten my gut into knots, but it never did.I wasn't scared of him and that placed me beyond confusion.I mean, what changed since the last time I saw him?Is it the realization that I am just like him? I mean, let's face it, how can you be scared of something that's just a copy of you?The truth unraveled beneath my eyes as I realized that there stood

Alex's POVHer eyes grew wider in astonishment and she said, "Birthday?"A smile curved my lips at her surprised expression, "Yes." I nodded my head, "Today was my birthday."Her lips stretched wider into a gaping grin and her eyebrows arched for the sky. Her eyes lit up as she excitedly said, "Cake?"I chuckled, "That's the only thing you think about, huh?" I shook my head, "No, unfortunately, there is no cake." At that realization, her smile broke down into a heart-melting pout.I ran my hand through her hair, gently stroking it. The smile slowly left my face and a low tired sigh parted my lips, "Can you believe that even your mother didn't remember."For some reason, I hated being alone on this day. I am not asking for much, I just wish she didn't leave. If only she stayed. Her presence alone was enough."Can I tell you a secret?" I said, "But you can't tell anyone." She nodded her head as if she understood my words. The movement of hand paused and I gazed into her eyes, the same o

Alex's POV"So, you and doctor handsome were shacking it up yesterday, huh?" I teased Cara as I cut off another piece of the pancake. Her beautiful eyes narrowed at me, "We weren't shacking it up." She said mockingly, trying to imitate my voice."First of all, I don't sound like that," I said, dredging a piece through the pooling syrup on my plate. I popped it in my mouth and for a minute there, I forgot that Cara even existed. God, this tasted so good. You see, that's why you should get married, you can have a good night sex then you wake up and a mouth-watering breakfast awaits you and then you can have a post-breakfast sex and life is all good again.Simple as that."Second of all, I saw you walking with him to somewhere," I added as I enjoyed the heavenly taste in my mouth. Cara's eyes dug a hole into my skin as she chewed on her food, she held up the rolled pancake with her fork and pointed it toward me, "He was only taking me to his friend."My eyebrows creased together, "And wh

He said, motioning to the road.I rolled my eyes at him before I placed the car in reverse, backed away and pulled out into the main street. • The Death of Me   Chapter 62 - How the story ended

Cara's POVLove is a pretty powerful drug. When you feel it, you really feel it.It can suspend time, making the whole world seem still except for you two.My mother once told me that there's a vast difference between love and true love. I never understood it, not until now.True love knows no depth. It's an endless tunnel that sweeps you up in the whirlwind and you're never quite free from it. It stays with you and it gets you addicted like nothing else. There is no breaking free after, no moving on.True love isn't ordinary. It doesn't come around often and that's how you'll know it's genuine.I thought I knew what love is when I first met Alex, when he took my hand in his and I fell into his arms, like I was always waiting for it. It felt like a fairy tale at the moment, it was magical..in a way.We had our ups and downs back then, but it was simple. We were just two lost people, learning how to fall in love. It was new for us, to open up and let our guard down, we weren't used to

  • The Death of Me   Chapter 61 - The Death of Me

Alex's POVI never believed in fate or destiny. All the soulmates and meant to be crap, they never made sense to me. The concept that no matter what we do, the outcome is sealed, that we are just puppets in the grand scheme of things...That concept is ill.But what is scarier is that people actually believe in it.They say what's meant to be, will be.That in the end, everything unfolds the way it's supposed to. As if destiny is not the choices we make.I just don't believe in that.Yeah, I believe that I fell in love, but I believe that I chose her, I believe that it was my choice...not something written in the stars all those years ago.It was my choice.Like I chose to be with her; now, I am choosing to leave her behind.I am choosing to move on.For the very first time, I am choosing to be selfish. On a heavy exhale, I stood up, for a moment I gazed at her. I couldn't help but think that what we had was so beautiful, it was everything I ever wanted. She was my everything. But all

It's like the ghosts of a child's nightmare - a fragment of our own imagination. A lie.Whenever fear and I crossed paths, I walked with confidence right past it.For years and years, I didn't feel it because I believed that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. But all of that changed now.All my defenses evaporated as my eyes locked down with his. ONE YEAR LATER...NEW YORKCara's POVLoving someone is one of the biggest chances we ever take.I consider it unfair, because it's rarely a conscious decision we make. Alex's POV"Can I ask something?"Oh, it speaks.I didn't answer right away, I can feel her eyes on me as I drove us to our destination. Without turning, I nodded my head, ushering her to carry on, although, I would've preferred this drive to be silent."Would you...Would you really do what you said on the phone?" The amount of fear in her voice almost made my chest tighten, "Would you hand me over to your father like that?"I turned to look at her, my brow arched as I asked, "Do you want the truth?" She immediately nodded her head, eager to hear the answer.I looked back at the road ahead of us, "Yeah, I would." I honestly said, "If it wasn't for Nikolas, who I am pretty sure will literally kill me if I did it, but if it wasn't for him, I would've just handed you to him in exchange for my daughter."I felt her shift in her seat uncomfortably, her voice shook a little, "Are you going to do that now?"I turned to her, to see the lone tear streaming down her cheek and I shook my head, "

She seemed to regain control when she looked at me and lightly shook her head, "I still don't understand."I found my voice again and said, "He has my daughter," I swallowed hard, "And we can't find him, we think...well, Nikolas thinks that if he knew you're alive, he'll show up and that will take us one step closer into finding her."
