Tears watered my eyes and I took a step back.

No... No! I won't be crying over him again. I'd already been there. I couldn't take more steps backwards. But it hurt so freaking much...

"Hailey..." I flinched when Vickie gently touched my shoulder and composed my most trustful smile.

"It's fine I..." from the corner of my eyes I could see the couple keep on their forceful make out. Like they had forgotten there were other people around them and I gulped the painful lump in my throat. "I'll be outside."

And without waiting much of a response from my friend I scurried away, sliding between the dancing bodies and fighting off the claustrophobia it all was giving me. I couldn't breath. The walls were closing the crowd was too dense... Somehow, I managed to make my way out there and in the moment I stepped out the front door, in the dark porch, I bent forward, holding on my knees for support as warm tears poured down my face.

I was being ridiculous. How could it hurt that much when he was clearly Karen's? I was the other girl! I'm the one to blame so there's no such thing as mercy for my questionable moral.

I should have never gone after another's girl boyfriend. It was like... the golden rule of feminism.

No matter how bad my chest hurt int he moment, I brought this upon myself. So I carefully count to ten and repeat until I felt the clenched lace around my lungs loosened and I could breathe once more.

Looking over my shoulder, back to the going party I realized there was nothing I would resent more than go inside again. I couldn't.

So taking a deep breath I slid out my phone and quickly sent a short text to Vickie, telling her I couldn't go there and that I was heading home. Canceling our sleepover knowing with the music and all it would be rather useless to go precisely to the house next door. I also made sure she knew how sorry I was for leaving her, but judging by the way Tom Lorris was eying her I doubted she would have any trouble. And her house as barely six feet away. She'd be fine.

HAILEY: Come at mine if you need a break from it

I sent at last, and proceed to look for Matt's number, knowing at this time and this far from home it would be a bit suicidal go on my own. But right when my finger hovered over his name I heard weird sounds and froze on the spot when I took in the sight in front of me.

Nate Herond, aka as our Roosevelt's talented quarterback, aka Mr. Popular was by his famous car. Hands pressed on the door bent over and puking his guts out. I winced at the disgusting sound as it splashed on the gravel.

Everyone knew how much he'd work on that Chevrolet for more than a year, building it up from a pile of scrap into this cool, badass truck. Nate even called it Letty and declare she was the ever-impossible love of his life. He loved that car more than anything in this world, so he must be drunk as heck if he was puking her tires.

"Oh goodness."

I rushed to his side when he collapsed on the floor, slowly since he was holding on the truck's side, but ended curled next the throw up.

My nose scrunched at the smell of it mixed with strong alcohol, but I forced myself to hold my breath and gently helped his shoulders into a sitting position against Letty.

"Hey," I tried gently, not really sure how to react. Should I call for help? Get him inside? Take him home? I'd never had to deal with someone as drunk before. The moment his head rested back against the side of the vehicle I gasped at the sight of a bluish bruise under his left closed eye. "Damn, are you alright?"

His low babbling wasn't exactly helping and it made my insides clenched. I'd never seen Nate like this... Well, it's not like I'd known him a lot. I'd met him since kindergarten and had exchanged a couple sentences I guess... And I know him and the other couple of jocks got this nasty reputation in taking parties too far, but seeing him this intoxicated was kinda sad.

"Nate," I tried again holding his shoulder so his frame didn't slide to the side. "You hear me? I'm Hailey. We had Biology together last year-"

"I know who you are." he groaned hoarsely due to the throw up, probably. His lips tilted up in the slightest, but he still yet to focus; like his eyes were looking at the nothing instead of me. "Gracie."

My jaw clenched instinctively. Man, how I hate that nick. But instead I continued: "Are you okay? You look about to pass out. I'll just call the-"

"Chill out, will you?" his voice was slow and husky, dragged even. "It's a party, everybody drinks in those."

"I haven't drunk." I assured and a strange sound filled the air. His back shake and the quarterback slowly get into a more straightened position, making me realize he was laughing.

"Of course you haven't." the sly remark tightened my chest and I narrowed my eyes.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing." he wryly laughed again, lids closed and head resting back against Letty. "You're just perfect, aren't you?"

Being called 'perfect' by the most wanted guy must be something that would drive you crazy, right? Well, when the said guy was ass drunk, sarcastic and hiding something not so pleasant in his tone, such thing as 'perfect' didn't sound like a compliment at all. More like the contrary.

He then opened his eyes, blinking forcefully in hopes to focus and frowned when he finally saw me. "Have you cried?"

My heart skirted when he impulsively rose one hand to touch the moisture under my eyes, but I was faster and kept it down, taking advantage of his dizziness. "You're drunk."

"But not blind."

I sighed as if he was bullshitting, I rolled my eyes and looked over the house, using that small moment to both wiped the remaining tears and take note that nobody was coming out anytime soon. "Not on your right mind either."

"Ain't I?" another choked chuckle dripping more sarcasm. "Oh no! What would I do now?"

"Go home would be a good option."

All humor suddenly die in his face . "Hell no."

"Okay."

I was so not in the mood to deal with drunken Nate -not when Justin and Karen's images keep flashing as a loop in my mind-, but at the same time I would feel worse if I let him out there in the open in his state.

Pinching the bridge of my nose I forced down my wishes to be home, in bed, comfortably reading something and cursed the moment Vickie thought coming to this party would be a good idea.

"Do you need me to go find your friends or something?"

"I don't need a fucking babysitter!" Nate snarled, but the sudden rage didn't end well and he grimaced before curling over his stomach, bending to the side just in time another wave of vomit was emptied.

"There, there." I scrunched my nose at the stink of it, but gently patted his back, squeezing my mind. What to do? "I'm gonna get Bear." I decided, dreading the idea in the moment it rolled out my tongue. "I'm sure he'll let you stay and-."

Nate groaned, sitting back against the side of the trunk wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "We just argued."

Damn great. That might explain the black eye, right? "Seth then?"

Seth Lorde was his companion in crime. They've been always together, for as long as I can remember. Both in football team as well and with that careless spirit that made them invulnerable. The only other friend as close was Kimberly Thander, but I always get these weird vibes from her so I rather not get that close as to ask her for something.

I stood but before I could turn around my forearm was harshly gripped and I gasped when I almost lose my balance and found myself face to face with Nate again. His eyes opened now and bloodshot, serious as hell and my guts churned.

"Don't tell Seth."

"Why?" I wondered breathless, eyes wide and my heart up my throat at the harshness in his words, suddenly more sober.

"Just. Don't."

"Okay." I gulped. "Could you let go now? Please."

Nate rolled his eyes but complied and I immediately stepped back, rubbing the skin he'd grabbed as I let my pulse calm down. What the hell? But back to the point, what should I do now?

I looked around, but the place still as empty as before. Everyone was inside enjoying themselves and whether Seth was here or not, Nate clearly didn't want him involved.

I took in a shaky breath, contemplating what to do. I looked down at him, who now got his eyes closed and the mouth parted.

Oh, no no.

I squatted beside him and tapped his shoulders carefully. If there's one thing I know about drunk people is that if they lost conscious that was bad.

"Nate." he didn't respond and I shook him lightly making him grunt. "Nate, wake up."

He didn't. Instead, the quarterback just mumbled something incoherent and his face fell forward against my shoulder. The sudden weight almost made me lose my balance.

Please, don't let him throw up again.

I felt my heart fastening and shook him harder. "Nate!"

"Ugh whaaat?"

The anxiety melted a bit, but he remained unmoving, clearly wasted.

I sighed. "Let's get you inside." and then I tried to help him up, but without his collaboration it was futile for someone like me to try and lift his weight.

I gasped startled when his arms snaked around me and pulled me closer, with his forehead in the curb of my neck. A wave of heat spread all over me. "I don't wanna go inside." complained Nate like a little kid. "Take me."

"Where?" I broke out his hot embrace, narrowing my eyes down at him. He pouted unconsciously at the lost of contact and it would have been almost adorable if I wasn't already reaching my limit . "You don't wanna go inside, don't wanna go home, don't want me calling anybody... You can't stay here by yourself, Nate. Not like this."

His numb expression remained almost void of reaction if it wasn't for the tired smile that curved his lips. "It's cute that you worry." I felt my cheeks flaming and my fingers tightened on my folded arms. "I just need to sober up... I know a place..." he slurred and with effort took off a set of keys from his pocket. "You said you haven't drank. You can take me."

"Where?" curiosity was gaining over irritation.

"I'll guide you." and this time he helped me help him up, hissing in pain and making me wonder if his fight with Bear left him this sore, how come no one else noticed? The fight must have been huge!

Careful to avoid the vomit, I led him on the passenger seat, handing him a bottle of water and Nate wasted no time in cleaning his mouth and spit it out on the gravel a couple times before awkwardly closing the door. I redid it properly when it didn't lock, biting my lip when the reality of what was happening hit me like a train.

What the hell am I doing?

Nate sent me a slow half smirk, almost as if he sensed my hesitation. "Come on, Gracie."

The idea still wasn't convincing me entirely. I mean, going out to an unknown place in the middle of the night with a guy I barely know and that couldn't even stand for himself?

Yeah, sounds like something safe I would totally do.

But something about this... the situation, his vulnerability, my need to keep the image of Justin away... I just needed to take a break. In the worst scenario I'd just take him home and headed to mine. I still got the pepper spray my father had given me last time he came so I'll be fine.

I send a quick text to both Vickie and Matt, letting them know I was going for a walk with a friend and sending them also my live location just in case. While sliding into the driver seat I took a deep breath and convinced myself being spontaneous for once wouldn't be that bad.

Hailey"I'm late, I'm late, I'm late. Sorry! I'm late-" I kept apologizing as I made my way -fast way- down the mall towards the street. People glared at me as I passed them, but I couldn't help it, I was LATE.Well, you may think I could have helped it by not being late, right? It isn't that easy. This morning I got a call from Sophia, the owner of the ice-cream shop where I work three afternoons per week and one day of the weekend. Apparently her daughter got appendicitis over the night and needed someone on the shop at noon until her sister made it here and I could leave. The joke? She was late, so now I was late. And considering how rude I was to Nate yesterday me being late would be unforgivable and might cost me the whole interview.Gawking I halted the moment I reached the front doors, glaring hard at the aggressive rain pouring mercilessly. Damn! When did a sunny day turned into this? I didn't even have an umbrella with me! For no having, I hadn't even picked up my jacket due

Everyone knew Nate's family wasn't the wealthiest, and due to his interest and what I remember from that unmentionable night, I'd dared to believe he might need any help he could use. So I nodded eagerly. "Of course. It would be like and essay of your career. I'll allow you to use it, I'll sign whatever you need. But please don't make me transcribe one of your games." I almost pleaded, thinking about Logan Dawson's usual works on the sport section.Nate thought about it for some seconds, my fingers crossed under the table, and a wave of relief washed over me when he finally nodded. "Okay.""Yes! You won't regret it. I would be ten thousand times better than a usual record."I was so enthusiastic for a moment I forget I was mad at him and began writing notes on the corners of the page, organizing what will I ask. When I looked back up I was surprised to see him smiling and it took me a moment to realize it was matching mine.I was quick in wiping it away. "Okay, so when did you first

I heard curses and went in that direction. "Where are you- Oh." I had to halt abruptly not to step on his waist. He was laying there, on the grass, ten feet away from the bench of the viewpoint where we could see all the city lights beneath, almost as bright as the amount of starts hovering us.I got to give it to him, this was such a great spot.I frowned, carefully sitting by his shamelessly sprawled frame. "You scared me." I mumbled, not sure he was here or lost in his own thoughts for the intensity in his eyes as he glared the sky. "I thought you might have fallen or

This time he did raise his eyes to meet mine, almost pleading. I didn't recognize this Nate in front of me. So vulnerable... "You really think so?""Of course. You're Matt's patch up, after all. If you weren't good enough coach Grey wouldn't have put you in his place.""Oh," he smiled sadly, but I was content since it was more than his depressive mood ten seconds ago. "I tend to forget you two are related."Wow! What a low blow there! I diverted my gaze immediately. "Yeah, well, you're not the only one who's not good enough.""What? No." Nate turned on his side again so now we were face to face, but mine still diverted not meeting his burning green orbs. "That's not what I meant.""It's alright.""It's not. It's just that the two of you are like polar opposites."Yikes, more nails into my heart. "I know-""No, Grac- Hailey. Not in a bad way.""So he is popular, intelligent and athletic while I'm the polar opposite and it's in a good way?""For fuck's sake! You girls are always this di

Hailey"So you've finally decided to show up." a harsh voice startled me and I stopped mid step and raised my gaze from my bag just as Logan Dawson stepped in, frowning down at me. "Well, hi." I smiled, but he didn't return it. Instead, he was sizing me down. "Mm, how was the convention?""Well, considering I lost a once in a lifetime interview for that..."I rolled my eyes, hanging the backpack properly now with my notebook and pen in hand. "Don't be melodramatic. It's just one interview. I was practically forced to take it.""Oh, you surely were.""Hails?" Ted called me from the second row, finally noticing I wasn't following since I had been caught at the bottom of the bleachers. Now that I noticed, we were kinda obstructing the flow of incoming students. I blushed a bit, but at Logan's expression I knew he wasn't done. "Go take a seat with Shane and Taylor." I told my brother and moved aside to let a couple climbed up the steps. "I'll be there in a bit.""Okay..." he hesitate,

During the break I went back to the spot my friend and brothers had but at Logan narrowed glare I promised I'll be back before it started again. Man! If I knew I would have to spend all this amount of time there... maybe I would have insisted harder to Mrs Glennson."So," Taylor cleared her throat perking one brow when I finally took the seat they'd saved me. "Are you gonna watch it with us after dragging us here or what?" I smiled, sheepishly. Her assertive belligerent personality is anything but innocent. Her confidence is admirable and more times than I would like to admit I found myself wishing to be more like her. I caught his phone when it dropped as he fight that guy. There was a lot of blood... mostly from that other boy's running nose, but Nate got himself a few good hits too.Just great. My butt'd begun to hurt from sitting here for this long and my legs are longing to stretch, but I feel like I need to wait here for him. Maybe because I was there, maybe because I felt bad... for whatever reason I didn't find it in me to leave yet.I'd been struggling between notifying my family or not, but in the end realized my mom would have freaked out if she got a call saying I was in the police station this late, even if it wasn't me the one arrested. How did it go in there?""Good." by the glance she sent me I could tell she didn't believe it. "I mean, considering everything." I sighed, shaking my head. I don't want nor need that distortion. I was good. We were good.I slammed Letty's door closed and flinched form the loud sound. Shit, sorry baby. I slouched into the seat, caressing the steering wheel as if to apologize to her and focus on lessening my breaths. Easy Nate. Easy, just- Fuck.My eyes widened as I recognized the lace from that stupid prize we won on Halloween laced over the rear view mirror and my chest squeezed. I'd completely forgotten it was there. Quickly, I untangled it, balling it and opened the glove box, but inexplicably halted before dropping it. My heart clenched for some unknown reason and my fist tightened around the soft lace before opening and I glanced down at it. I could feel my pulse on every corner of my being."Fuck my life." but it came out breathlessly and before giving me time to fully analyze my stupidity, I was lacing it back where it was. I must be out of my mind. ........................................She exited the ice-cream shop, d

Kimmy eyes waited for her to put it all on, with that sharp look still persistent making Seth flinch, but as soon as the girl moved she slid out the bench as well."Fuck." Seth muttered once she walked away airily. "I screw up, didn't I?""Dude." I scoffed earning his attention once more. "How could you not advise her Bear was coming? You know she hates him.""Well, yeah... but I thought it was more like dislike. This right now felt like the Cold War." It totally did. "Why didn't you tell her?""Oh, no." I scoffed, pushing away his accusatory pointing finger. "Don't put this on me. You told me to remind her 'your offer'. How was I to know what '

NATE: R we good?I put the phone down, facing the counter when once more it turned up to be him. My chest still too messed up for this. It's been like this since I 'avoided' him at school. Which shouldn't get him so bothered. He ignored me, I gave him space. Now I needed it too. I handed the waiting lady her ice-cream and forced out a smile. "Have a nice day.""Thanks." she grinned back and handed it down to the little girl she was with, who jumped excitedly at her dessert as I kept the change in the machine. Next costumer step in, and then a couple more before the shop get's quiet again. As usual, it was rather deserted. A guy at the back, curved over his computer with an ice coffee in front of him and two teenage girls giggling and whispering loudly over the phone of one of them. Not busy anymore, I retired once more to the end of the counter where I had my things spread, in the middle of my French essay. Yet the moment I sat another burst of dings as more text came. HaileyI let my plastic fork fiddle with the food, not really hungry and instead I moved the vegetables from one side to another. I knew I was neglecting myself this past week, but everything tasted like sand in my mouth and the constant nerves twitched my stomach in the most random moments.Seeing my mother cry only added to the already bad mood I was having. I mean, if she was distressed it wasn't just some mistake. This could really be serious. Maybe my father was in trouble. I felt like drowning, metaphorically but also physically in some way. I hated it. I just want him to contact us and tell us everything was okay. To make things even worst, I was on my lunch period alone, since none of my friends shared it with me today, and whether it was good since I wasn't the best company lately, I could really use the distractions. Instead, I was here, in one of the small table in the corner of the canteen, scrolling through TikTok without really looking at it. My mind numb when Nate ha

"What is he doing here?""Mh?" I sat straight again after picking my bag just as Tay entered the path the parted from the main road and lead to the farm. Confused at her out of the blue question I followed her gaze and my heart jolted when I recognized Letty from afar, parked before my house. "Oh," my brows knitted together. "I don't know."I quickly check my phone, but I got no new texts from him responding mine nor announcing his arrival. Today he hadn't come at school at all and apparently answering a text was too complicated. A part of me was glad he came, these past days, I only managed to fully get my mind of things with him. He touches me and the world disappears. Maybe it was a good thing he was here. Otherwise, as soon as Tay dropped me I'd be alone with my thoughts again. "You like him?" my friend's voice snapped me out my trance, making my eyes went wide as I turned towards her."Of course not!" I gaped, but she returned the look sternly for a second before diverting again

Mrs Glennson took her time passing the pages of our last article, her lips pursed as we wait for her verdict. I felt a light tap on my feet, but in my state it made me jump. Bewildered, I gave Logan a glare and he gestured me to stop the mad bouncing. As if it was that easy! We've been called here for a reason, and judging by the scowl on her face it wasn't a good one."Well," she cleared her throat finally, snapping both our attention back to her. "I gotta say I'm disappointed."Just like that my chest deflated. If there was anything I was spotless at, that was writting. I'd been on the Daily ever since I was allowed to and never once I'd been disappointing. That hurt. And for some reason him staying churned my guts in both a bad and a very good way. I don't mind."I heard him pulling down the wrapper and munching a bite. "Yep, it is yummy." I rolled my eyes at his mouth-full answer, at least one of us was appreciating my mother's work. HaileyMondays weren't my favourite day. At all. But after this exhausting weekend more than ever I would have done almost anything to add another day to recover. I promised myself I wouldn't let Taylor fool me again into helping her babysit. Four-year-olds could be really hyperactive, and if you added the sugar rush to it you got a killer mix. Killer for us, of course, the parents were pleased with how happy they exited the party. Never again. That plus the new article they want this week and the constant stress since my father failed to call us this Saturday got me crawling through the hallways like a zombie. Not even the concealer was able to fully cover the dark bags under my eyes. He was on a mission, they wouldn't even tell us where. But every two, three weeks at most he video call us. "Okay, I'm literally exhausted, so if you're all good and stuff I'll go pass out with your permission. You're sure you're good, man?""Yes.""Okay," he smiled knowingly at us and spun around to walk now determined. "I leave you in good hands then. You know where to find me.""Nate," Hailey snapped my attention back at her and I noticed her eyes on my side, concern all over her face. "You won't stop touching it, can I have a look?""No.""Come on, you're such a child..." she gently peeled my hand from there, creating a tingling sensation where our skins met and successfully distracting me enough for her to lift the hem of my shirt to see the first dark mark. "Oh my... are those bruises? Do they hurt?""A little..." I say before realizing I did and quickly covered it with a smirk, pushing down the fabric. "You can always kiss them better."She blushed giving Oliver a side glance, but he was already snoring at the other end of the space. Now that is a fast sleeper, I thought with envy.
