Thirty-Seven

Ethan's voice resonated through the chamber, but silence answered him. Ice surged through his veins as he vacillated through the debris and jetsam, looking frantically for any sign of Clara. The air was thick and clean, making it troublesome to see, but he pushed forward, his heart beating in his chest.

“Clara!” he called once more, his voice rough. He checked the rubble, trusting and asking that she was just covered up underneath the flotsam and jetsam. But as he filtered through the broken stones and smashed pieces of the temple, fear settled in his stomach.

There was no sign of her. Not even the sword she had wielded with such power.

“Damn it!” Ethan reviled, hammering his clench hand against the closest divider. How could this have happened? One minute they were battling the Ascendant, and another, Clara was gone, vanished without a clue. He had seen the light devour her, but he refused to accept that she was gone.
