Chapter 5: Torn Apart

***Scarlett***

I'm still in shock.

It's only been twenty-four hours since the incident.

It's been confirmed that my father, Alpha Ashley Anderson was killed. His drink was poisoned. Whoever my father had a meeting with has a hand in this. The bad news is no one knows who my father met. Many said he was alone in his office sorting some documents but had no idea who came to see him.

Evans thinks the wandering killer has finally succeeded in striking my father. That's what everyone in Silvercrest Range calls the killer now; the wandering killer.

I don't want to argue with him but this is too easy. The killer wouldn't have gained access into my father's working chambers without help from the inside. The elders of the pack say an investigation will be carried out to ascertain if this was the work of the wandering killer or an insider.

Evans dragged the tray of food close. He lifted the warm glass of milk and handed it to me. "You have to eat, Scarlett. Dina has been worried sick about you. She asked after you this morning when she called."

The scrambled eggs on the plate smelled like death. It made me want to puke. "Take it away, I have no appetite," I said in a low tone.

"I can't let you do this to yourself, my little princess. Eat, so you can get your energy back. I told you I'll handle everything." Evans fondled my hand gently.

I got a feeling my marriage to Evans is the worst mistake of my life. Our union has in no way helped with the situation at all. Don't misunderstand me... Evans Foss is a loving husband. He's been good to me and my pack. And I'm yet to understand why Curtis, Lois' mate, made that sneering comment the other day.

He got me worried. I was thinking Evans was a dangerous man or was onto something horrible. Evans has never shown me that strict side everyone else complains about. I'm yet to see him act like a beast when I am around him.

The problem is that my people are still being abducted and killed. So far two of his people have been found dead which is shocking. The day their body was discovered, Evans was pissed off. Many began to say the Andersons had shared their bad luck with the Foss. That can't be further away from the truth.

"Are you sure it's the wandering killer who killed my father?" I watch him through half closed eyes. My eyelids felt too heavy to lift up as they were too swollen and spasmed from excessive crying.

Evans leaned closely to me and pulled my head to lay on his chest. "Yeah. Who else? It has to be him."

Hearing Evans' heart beat and taking in his musky scent calmed me. I wasn't attracted to him but as mates being close to him like this makes me feel protected.

Falling in love with Evans Foss isn't an easy task. Maybe soon I'll learn to love him. I respect him a lot though.

I lift my head up to stare at his face. He used his mustache to rub my forehead in an adoring manner. He smiled, trying to make me feel better.

"But why…Why is he after us?" I asked. "He hasn't touched anyone from the other packs yet. The Mos, Bergs and Ruuds. They are safe. So why us?"

"I suspect that whoever it is would be from either of the three packs. The killer has never left a clue—not even mistakenly. There is no clue so we could understand his reason for killing. No tracks were found either." Evans' eyes glowed, his voice transitioned into a low growl. "The day I find out who this bastard is, I'll make him pay with every drop of his blood. He would die in the most painful way."

Evans' grip on me tightened, as he planted a kiss on my forehead. Evans obviously wasn't going easy with this case…I know he's trying his best. Anytime we discussed about the wandering killer, it makes him so furious. Just like now, his change in appearance scared me. His claws extended as he made threats but they shifted into fingers immediately he sensed my discomfort.

I want the killer to be caught at all costs. When he's caught, I'll like to ask him why. Why did he have to kill all those people?
