Chapter 4: The Enemy's Daughter

***Bryan***

"Jensen! Where are you off too?" I called out to my friend as I watched him hurry along the sidewalk.

"What's up, Bryan?" he asked. "Lois is going for a condolence visit. I just thought I should tag along."

I haven't heard news of any death within our territory. "Who died?"

"I don't know. Curtis asked if I wanted to tag along. He said Lois' friend lost her father a few minutes ago."

"Huh. That's sad."

Jensen pointed at a car heading our way. "Aha. Here they come. You can ask them."

The car stopped right in front of us. Curtis and Lois stepped out and bowed their heads to greet me. Almost everyone greets me that way now. It will take some time for me to get used to it.

As the soon-to-be Alpha, some of the respects an Alpha gets are already being extended to me.

My gaze was on Lois. "Jensen told me you're going for a condolence visit. Who died?"

"Scarlett lost her dad. Alpha Ashley Anderson is dead."

"What?"I yelled. Lois wasn't looking good.

"Scarlett called me crying. She said her father collapsed in his office this morning."

This came to me as a big shock. Why would he drop dead now? Why deprive me of the opportunity of killing him myself? I was so close. So fucking close!

Lois added. "She confided in me though. She said she thinks her father was killed…poisoned to be precise."

Now this is interesting. I've never been to Anderson territory unless for my assignments and mostly it was at night. Who would dare take my prey away from me? He was supposed to die in my hands.

An idea popped in my head. "I'm coming with you guys." I muttered.

"You don't have to," Lois said.

"I think I should come with you. I'll be Alpha soon. It's good to start establishing good relationships with other packs in the range. Don't you think so?" My excuse sounded so convincing because they all looked at me and nodded their heads in agreement.

Curtis waved his hands. "Let's go then."

I flicked my fingers at them and they stopped in their tracks. "Before we leave, know this. Please when we get there don't address me as the soon-to-be Alpha but as your friend."

Lois had a confused look. Apparently she wasnt in the mood to argue so she just nodded.

My Wolf was mad. This news was a great news at the same time a bad one. I've always visualized Alpha Ashley dying in my hands. I needed to know who took this opportunity away from me.

Perhaps when I get to where Scarlett lives I'll be able to point out one or two things that are out of place.

Lois Wold is among the few people I got close to after I returned to Silvercrest Range.

I reconnected with a few others who were already my acquaintances years ago, like Cutis, Jensen, Ingrid and a lot of others.

As for Lois Wold, she was never a part of this pack, her surname Wold says it all.

Alpha Westby must have accepted her into his pack not long ago.

Westby is just like a father to me. If not for him, I'll be dead. And Debbie too. The young girl who used to give me her lunch and money. That girl saved my ass before I even came across Westby.

It's been five months with no trace of who Debbie is. I never got to know her surname or what pack she was from. She only told me her name was Debbie. The time we spent together in our small world was so little...Five days—that's it. It was so short but yet long. It was like I've known her forever. If anyone had asked me what I thought about that thirteen year old girl then. I would have told them that there was no way she wasn't my mate. It was love at first sight.

We arrived the mansion. I must say, it looks just as they say. The Andersons aren't just a big pack but were filthy rich. I'm not shocked beacuse I am aware that the source of this wealth comes from my family, the Haalands. Everything I was looking at right now was mine. By right, it all belongs to me. They took it away from my pack.

As I remember that horrible night, I clenched my fist...

Every corner I looked at around this damned house reminded me of what they did to me.

The Andersons were never the richest pack. Haaland was. But after wiping us out they together with the Foss claimed our lands, territory, my fathers ships, port and the fish business.

"Sorry…I… I kept you all waiting." Scarlett entered the living room. Her face was as red as a rose petal. Her eyes were swollen from tearing up. "I had to attend to the elders of the pack."

Lois introduced us as her friends then rose up to give her a warm hug. This makes Scarlett break down completely, tears rolling down her cheeks.

It was unlikely for me to take pity on a crying woman. Although I have a weakness for crying kids. I can't stand a crying child. There's this need for me to want to be their hero.

I believe crying adults should be able to take care of themselves.

Scarlett's tears moved me. I wasn't supposed to feel sorry for her. If anything, she deserves it.

I've never seen Scarlett up close. Although I've seen her a few times from a distance but this was my first time seeing her this close.

The night Lois almost caught me trailing Scarlett, I couldn't get this close to her. Now I can see why everyone said Evans got himself a very pretty bride. She was damn pretty! Coming here today makes me appreciate her soft features.

I observed her for a while.

Damn it! It would be hard killing this one. She was very beautiful with fair skin and shoulder length blond hair. Even as she cried, it only made her look cute and innocent.

I had to resist the urge of pulling her in for a hug. I began to feel turned on just by staring at her. My heart pounded fast in my chest. My breath soon became raspy …

What the heck is wrong with me? I need to leave. Now!

Without any explanation I quietly slipped out of the mansion. Coming here was a bad idea.

Would I be able to put up with hurting that pretty face? Nothing should stop me now. I've come too far to stop. I scold myself and had to clear my head so I could get back in the game.
