Adrian stepped out of the car, calm and unbothered, as though the armed men were no more alarming than a doorman. Of course, this was his world, where violence was normal.

The driver opened my door, jolting me back to reality. "Ma'am?" he prompted. My legs felt heavy and reluctant to move, but I forced myself to step out. The air felt thicker here, the tension palpable.

The men didn't say a word, but I felt their eyes on me, assessing, judging. I wrapped my arms around myself instinctively, trying to shield against their scrutiny. My heart was racing, but I kept my face neutral, my head held high.

I had to play the part, no matter how badly I wanted to turn and run.

As I walked inside, entering the mansion and taking in the interior of the surrounding, which evolved with more men, a discomforting feeling washed over me.

My feet screeched a bit as I almost stumbled, only to feel a steady hand helping me back to my feet. My eyes landed on Adrian.

I had many things to fix, but he had interrupted them, informing me that I had to be here."Welcome, Demonic. I have been expecting your arrival," he uttered. I felt him leave a pat on my back. I raised my gaze afterward as my eyes landed on Adrian standing on the other side. His eyes darkened as they narrowed, staying glued at me.Really, I had little idea of why he held so many grudges against me. I had never seen him as an enemy or so. My only aim was to carry out my family's legacies and ensure some things were put in place. I had always wanted to protect him, ensure he was alright, and so I trained so hard. [Sierra POV]Adrian led me to one of the rooms, helping me sit on the bed.Dominic was here. Why? My mind raced, spiraling with questions. Shouldn’t he be back in the city? The entire reason I agreed to this trip was to escape his reach, but now he was here too.And yet, I couldn’t shake the nagging thought—if Dominic recognized me, I should already be dead. Did he not know who I was, or was he playing some twisted game?“What are you thinking?” Adrian’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. His eyes scanned the passage behind him before narrowing on me, dark and sharp.“What was that downstairs? Didn’t I tell you not to try anything?” he said, his tone dripping with frustration.“What do you mean? Is it my fault I stumbled?” I snapped, watching him scoff. "And why were you trembling anyway? It must be new for you, right? Well, you better get used to it and fast also 'cause now it seems we are going to be stuck here for a while." He said, standing up as he turned to leave."This wasn't pa

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   Hunting Shadows

[Dominic POV]"Release!" I uttered as the bird flew out of the cage, flying up into the sky. I reloaded my shotgun, aiming with my right eye. "And dead," I pulled the trigger; the loud sound echoed as the bird fell down. I retreated the gun.I've always found hunting quite fun and a way to train my aim even more. Since I needed some air anyway, I decided to head out to the courtyard, nestled at the edge of the forest, just beyond the mansion's backyard."I see you still haven't given up on your typical hunting," a voice caught my attention. My eyes landed on Uncle Gavin."Well, it's just an old habit I find quite enjoyable," I said, gesturing as Uncle Gavin approached me, taking up one of the guns laid there. "Why don't I give it a shot also?"He uttered, as another bird was released. He aimed at it, pulled the trigger, and scraped through the air, missing the bird. "Seems my old age is getting to me," he said, retracting the gun and dropping it back on the ground."I'm sure you still

I returned to the mansion with Uncle Gavin by my side. My eyes immediately caught sight of Uncle Marc seated at the dining table. His eyes landed on me instantly."Good, you're here," he uttered."You called for me, Uncle Marc?" I said, giving a half bow."Yeah, you must be hungry." He questioned as I raised my gaze, thinking it was something important, but it was just about the food being ready. My gaze shifted to Adrian, who was already seated. I watched his presumed wife come out with some of the maids, bringing some food."Wait, she cooked?" I thought, my mind trying to make sense of what was taking place."Come, sit, Dominic. I had your brother's wife prepare lunch," Uncle Marc uttered.

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   Cornered

[Sierra's POV]Taking the dishes into the kitchen, I laid them down and leaned against the wall for a moment. I let out a sigh, thinking about what had occurred back at the dining table with Marc and Adrain. Really, was staying here such a good idea? These people stood by their names, their eyes and actions sending shivers down my spine. Even though the blow wasn't meant for me, I couldn't deny the fear that coursed through me with his footsteps growing nearer. And I had also bumped into Dominic. What if he had recognized me? I was really in a death trap, never expecting to be trapped with no way out like this. All I wanted was justice for my mother and to make them pay, not to be bound and trapped in another lie.I couldn't run away, nor could I say anything. It seemed I just had to act up, not showing much attention, at least until he was gone. Then I would plot my way and destroy him to the very inch. But for now, I just had to keep low and hidden, even though he was here too. All

My eyes sprung open, and I gently rose from the bed, welcoming the morning rays that seemed to glow through the room. They served as a reminder of last night with Dominic's questioning.Even though he seemed not to recognize me, I couldn't deny the suspicion he harbored toward me. I just had to stay low and try not to attract any attention; only then could I assure my safety and prevent him from recognizing me.I made my way into the bathroom, splashing some water on my face before walking out, only to be hit with the realization that Adrian wasn't around last night. I was happy that I didn't have to share the room with him, but I couldn't help but question where he could be and what he was planning. He was slapped last night; I was sure he must still be quite furious, but I couldn't understand why. Why was he slapped by Marc instead? I just couldn't understand each and every one of them. Well, I shouldn't even be trying; I'm not part of their family in the first place, so why bother?

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   The Business of Power

[Adrian's POV]I stepped out of the mansion, my eyes landing on Damien, who was still trying to aim a shot at the target. It seemed he also loved hunting, just like Dominic. However, I found the real hunt and fun game when I was dealing with my enemies or traitors; anything else just seemed boring. My mind still lingered on Uncle Marc's last words—the entire De Santos family. Why was he making everything more complicated than it already was? All I wanted was my dad's property, so I saw no other choice in this contract. Yet, it seemed things just got more complicated for me.I don't know what Uncle Marc sees in Dominic that he doesn't see in me. Staying in my mansion, tarnishing the family name? Why doesn't he understand that I also make my moves? Even though I was more interested in the business side of things than becoming an underworld lord, I never had those dreams. "Wait, you?" one of the men questioned as I watched an exclamation state come over him."No, this can't be possible. They can't see me," I muttered in my thoughts. My legs trembled slightly as they retreated back a little. But where was I intending on running to? They had already sighted my presence."I need..." I stammered, lost of words to say. If possible, I could make them join me. No, that wasn't going to work, would it?"I can't believe this! So, you have been under our very nose all this while. We have to tell the boss. He will surely reward us for this..." the other man said as they left a nod to each other. The two men, without hesitation, left my side. Though I tried stopping them, it proved futile as I watched them leave the mansion. But what was I thinking? That it would be possible to stop them by pleading? They were the same men from the club that I knew. Now it assured me that this news was surely going to reach Dominic if I didn't do something immediately.I made my wa

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   The Weight of Loyalty

"Come have a seat, dear," Marc said. As I sat down, I noticed some of the men seated tried avoiding a glance at me. "So now, let's begin," Marc announced after taking a seat also. One of the men brought out what seemed like a suitcase. In it were some files. "Here are the recordings of the companies as requested Marcellus, sir," the man said, handing over the files to Marc as he checked through them. "Good," he uttered. I had no idea what this meeting was for in the first place or why my attention was needed. "It seems the rumors are true, but surely they must have the guts, trying to cheat their way through the system laid down by the De Santos," Marc said, laying the papers on the desk as I caught a glimpse of the headings. It was just a file of some listed companies, even though I couldn't see the list there. "So, what should we do, Marcellus, sir? We are ready to take action and show them the consequences of going against you, boss, but only if you give us the perm

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   The Face of Fear

[Sierra's POV] I heard a knock at the door as I stood up, approaching the door. Opening it, I caught sight of a man standing at the doorstep. Guessing from his dressing, I was sure he was one of Marc's men. "Marcellous, sir, seeks your attention," he said. What does this old man want with me again? I recalled his words before I had left the basement the other time, saying that my attention was going to be needed soon, the words about me starting my work as the sohoe. But what work is that? One side told me it was something bloody, a path I saw myself unable to engage in. "I am coming," I replied to the man, shutting the door back. I stepped into the bathroom, splashing some water at my face. Glaring at the mirror, I released a breath. So this was it, the day I found myself unable to escape from. And now that Dominic seems to be gaining an upper hand in finding out secrets about Adrian and me, this was the time for me to act faster than I could before he finds out about me. I mus

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   Poisoned Trust

[Adrian's POV] Walking through the hall, I found myself unable to believe what Sierra had just told me in the room. The fact that Dominic now knows. But what lingered in my thoughts was Elena. I couldn't deny one word that left Sierra's mouth, but she couldn't, why would she? I had suspected her at first about the stranger who had called me. I can't possibly suspect her about Dominic knowing as well. But then, how? Just how did Dominic know? It can't just be a slip from nowhere; someone must have let the cat out of the bag. What if it was the same stranger? I mean, what if he had called Dominic up, blurting out everything he knew? But that wasn't possible either. Even though I wanted to kill this so-called stranger, I am quite sure he was smarter than to let Dominic know. At least he claims he wants to be my ally, if that is as true as he had said, though. Still lost in thoughts, I found myself standing right at Elena's doorstep. Finding myself here already, I thought, "Why not j

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   Exposed

Who could have told Dominic? I mean, how did he find out? I know I should feel at ease that this wasn't about him finding out about my true identity, but this also was something I couldn't just let off so easily. First, he had figured out Adrian's plan, and now he knew that Adrian and my marriage was just a false pretense. Now I know why he didn't tell Marc about any of it—because Adrian was involved. If it was all about me, I was quite sure he would have spilled the beans. Dominic left the room after slamming the door at his back. "Now that he knows, what should I do?" I wondered in my thoughts. "But does Adrian also know that Dominic has figured it out? Oh, wait, Dominic mentioned talking to him about it, so that means he doesn't know either." I stepped out of the room, catching no sight of Dominic. I made my way to my room, entering as Adrian awaited my presence with those raging eyes. He approached me hastily. I felt a tight grasp on my hands as his eyes locked on mine in that

  • The Crimson Trail of Death   Dominic's Discovery

I pressed my back against the wall as I watched that old man walk closer, playfully holding the pistol. My mind still wondered what he was planning on using it for. At least he wasn’t planning on killing me. Right?Dominic had asked to see him privately, and yet something about the way Dominic was glaring at me left a thought that maybe it was possibly about me. Now this made me wonder what he might have told Marc. Could it be some kind of secret, one that Marc saw as an offense?I tried turning to leave the basement only to find the door already locked. A gaze back at Marc as my breath seized, witnessing him already standing in front of me. My eyes flinched, expecting some sort of impact, but I felt nothing, which caused my eyes to open back."It's time you grow and become stronger. But first, take this," Marc said, handing over the pistol to me. But what did he mean by take? What did he intend I use a pistol for?My hands shivered as I tried grabbing the gun from Marc's grasp. • The Crimson Trail of Death   The Basement Revelation

One side standing was Dominic, and the other was Adrian. Both eyes fixed on me."So wait, you're telling me that Uncle Marc decided to go on with the ceremony without even leaving a word? And now I'm finding out that my wife is the Sohoe of the De Santos now?" Adrian asked, breaking the silence that echoed."I don't think I need to remind you that I don't need your permission to act in my mansion," Marc snapped as all eyes turned to gaze upon him, making his way back. I had no idea where he had suddenly gone off to in the middle of the whole event."Uncle Marc, why would you..." Adrian wanted to say but paused at his words."Why would I what?" Marc cut in. This time, he had already arrived at my side. The old man who had carried out the ceremony, saying some weird words, walked up to Marc."It is completed. I have done my part. I shall take my leave now," he said, as Marc gave a greeting. "Thanks for your time, wise one." The old man gave a nod, leaving the mansion. The crowd present

[Sierra POV]Finishing my bath, I stepped out of the room. I needed to freshen up for a moment and find some calm. A knock at my door caught my attention. "Come in," I said as I saw a group of ladies enter. They carried makeup instruments, and I could tell they were makeup artists. "But what were they doing here?" I wondered. They placed their makeup gadgets on the floor, and one approached me, giving a half-bow. "Good day, ma'am. We were hired to prepare you for the ceremony," she explained. But what ceremony?"What do you mean, and what ceremony?" I asked."It was an order from Marcellous, sir. That we get you ready for the Sohoe ceremony..." another explained. So, that explained their presence. The old man had chosen to carry out the ceremony today, the same day I had returned to the mansion without a second thought. The ceremony was what he wanted to happen next."Please, ma'am, can we proceed?" her words snapped me from my thoughts. As they opened the makeup gadgets, I witnessed

I mean, what else could it be? They were close friends, after all. Her being here all of a sudden, claiming to have something to tell me about him and Sierra, led me to believe it was some kind of secret Adrian chose to hide from me—possibly another one that could land him in trouble.“Before I speak, I'm quite sure you must have noticed it yourself... maybe signs or so,” she said. But why was she beating around the bush and refusing to get straight to the point?
