A scurrying through the walls made Veronica jump. It was dark with just the single candle lighting the expansive halls in front of her. Her heart tried to beat through the wall of her chest, as she stood still peering into the darkness beyond her light.

Her fear almost made Veronica regret getting out of bed in the first place. But she would not let her imagination or some mouse keep her from getting something to eat. She had awoken hungry from her dreams. It was still the middle of the night, but surely there was something she could snack on in the kitchen.

Veronica began walking again, at a faster pace than before. Yes, she told herself it was just a mouse she had heard. But her father’s voice spoke up in her mind, ‘There are creatures in the walls that get little girls who wander this castle at night.’

She shook her head. Veronica was too old to believe in ghosts or monsters. It was just a story he had told her to make her stay in bed. He had seemed amused by her horror at the thought.

Veronica was a wisp of a girl, barely 16. But that was an adult. She would soon be married. She had no idea who he was but also understood it was not her decision. Her father, the count, had arranged it a long time ago.

Her slight figure was only accented by her height. She stood only 4’9, which was much shorter than any other woman she had met. Her black hair hung loosely around her shoulders. She had lively green eyes and freckles covered her face.

In fact, she was aware of her youthful appearance. Sometimes, she was grateful for it. But at this moment, she wished she wasn’t being such a baby.

There was a raspy, scratching in the wall. Her breath caught in her throat. It was just a mouse, she repeated to herself. She stood still again, trying to see beyond what the light could show her.

With a huff, she picked up the edges of her nightgown and ran the rest of the way to the kitchen. It may be late but there was light beyond the kitchen door. Someone was up who could talk to her and soothe her nerves. They might even escort her to her room.

But when she opened the kitchen door, Veronica saw it was abandoned. Light from the full moon shone brightly through the windows that lined the kitchen walls. She sighed, letting all of the frustration from her disappointment out with the breath. No one was in here.

At least there were no monsters. The moon shining so brightly also alleviated some of her anxiety. Veronica walked to the pantry through the kitchen. Too bad there were no windows in the pantry. The food would all be behind that door, since the kitchen was specifically used for preparing food- not storing it.

As she walked past the stove, a flash of conversation returned to her mind. One of the maids had spoken with her dad about food going missing during the night. He had dismissed it and told her that he would talk to her about it later.

Veronica wondered if they had finished that conversation or if they would talk more tomorrow about the missing food she was about to eat. As she swung the pantry door open, she laughed, trying to lighten her mood. But it was a forced bark that seemed shrill to her as it reverberated off the kitchen walls in an eerie echo.

At the sudden sound of her laughter, something inside the pantry jumped and turned towards her. It was hard to see in the shadows. It stayed close to the ground and growled at her. It was a deep scratchy sound that warned of danger.

Veronica tried to breathe but it was stuck in her lungs, as if they had been filled with cement all of a sudden. “Wh-who is there?” She forced herself to whisper softly. She tried to disguise the fear in her voice but knew it wasn’t working.

The growling slowly seemed to form together into a raspy word, “there.” Veronica closed her eyes. She couldn’t see anything anyway.

Swallowing against the lump in her throat, she put out her hands in a submissive gesture. “I don’t know who you are but its ok.” She was trying so hard to be brave. “I’m Veronica.”

The figure hidden in the shadows scampered around in a circle. She opened her eyes to find they had started to adjust to the dark. In the corner, there was a humanoid figure bent real low to the ground.

It’s dark hair was a ratted mess that came down to it’s shoulders. The clothes it wore were more like rags, dirty and ripped. She was unable to determine the color of it’s skin, could have been tan or purple for all the dirt that covered it.

She bent down, as well. The poor creature. “How can I help you?” She asked tenderly.

Between the darkness and the way it stood, Veronica could not make out any other features. It could be a boy or it could be an orc or a goblin or... Exactly, how big was it? She wasn’t sure.

Dark eyes met hers and what she saw in them made her gasp. If he wasn’t a boy, he had experienced the most human emotions she had ever seen. She reached out to him and he gasped, pulling away.

In a moment, he burst at her with an overwhelming speed. Terror filled her as she screeched.

I have lived in the walls of this giant prison ever since I was able to escape the Ogre that used to beat me every day. I was with the Ogre since before I could remember. But I could not get outside, so I hide there. In the walls, it was dark. But the dark comforted me, especially when I am upset. There are passageways through the walls. Some of them aren’t good for being tall. I remember a couple times when I first started living in the walls that I bumped my head. But now, I have learned to live downward. The big monster had brought new monsters to the prison. I watched the new ones carefully. I had to know if the cub had told the big monster about me. Maybe they had called the new ones to find me. There were three of them. An old one that was skinny as that snake I had found in the locked rooms downstairs. He had long white hair on his face and wore a blue pointed cap. I have a vague memory of seeing someone like that in a picture in the Ogre’s quarters. The second was a female monster. Her brown and grey hair reminded me of the fur on the creatures that shared the walls with me. I think I heard a monster call them “mice” before. Of course, they are my only friends. It seemed the monsters were scared of the little things. The female monster also had brown eyes. Her skin was like an old wall, full o

I only briefly considered letting it out. I would have to figure out how to unlock that door and then how to get into the cages. If this voice was as strong as I felt it to be, why could it not get out on it’s own.I shook my head. Besides, I did not know what the voice was. He could be an even scarier monster than the ones that I was already avoiding.“We are pretty scary.” The voice taunted him and sounded amused. I scowled and glanced back in the direction of that door. All of a sudden something blacker than the rest of the dungeon was on top of me. It was smaller than me and smelled of old abandoned rooms. The softness of its fur tickled my skin.It bit me and I gasped. I began to try to push it off, swinging my arms and legs around until i no

I had followed them from the eating room. But then they went outside. I stopped at the doorway. Could I go out there? I really didn’t know how to not fall up. How did they do it? It had a good hold on me and there was nothing I could do but scream. He dropped me in a corner cell with an ugly look on its face. As I hit the hard, cold stone floor, my shoulder suddenly felt as if it had been lit on fire. I screeched out in pain, as the door closed and the monster locked it.I moved around in circles around the cell, jumping on and off the soft cot in the corner. I had seen people sleeping on something like that before. But I always slept within the walls. There were no cots there. I didn’t need one anyway.Another monster guard came in and watched me as I trampled all over the cell. “Who is this?” I heard him ask the other.

The mysterious portal revealed the other side like an open door. A world of brimstone and lava. There was no place like it in this world. The ground shook. She was so confused about her relationship with Prince Vaugn, while she appreciated the simplicity of her relationship with Roger. She had learned to love Roger completely. But there wasn’t the same attraction to him as there was with the prince and there were other emotions that she didn’t quite understand. It seemed like those emotions were what fueled the confusion. She remembered how Prince Vaugn had promised to listen to her and take her advice when it came to leading his country. It was a beautiful dream he had taken away. While she did not feel the same passion for it, the journey ahead with Ro

It was the most miserable and saddest thing she had ever seen or heard.Suddenly, Saple’s eyes glowed bright red. He roared, as he let go of a stream of fire into the air, and magic crackled like lightning around them. The storm clouds built quickly around Saple and Roger but this time they engulfed the entire area, leaving Veronica stumbling around in a purple fog.She wasn’t sure what she was seeing between the darkness and the limited sight of the grainy fog. But the dragon was nuzzling Roger. Saple seemed to be glowing and shrinking as he poured himself into whatever spell and emotions he was experiencing.Veronica stood frozen in

We attacked with dragon fire again and again until I completely lost track of time. Saple and I had two sets of senses to rely on. We each had our own thoughts to process and evaluate the fight and we were able to understand each other without having to take the time to express it.It made us quicker.“Your years hiding in the shadows and avoiding humans has kept you sharp and alert, little one.” Saple complimented me. We had pulled back to regroup again and were considering how much work there was to do.As the keeper shrunk, it got faster. Together we were still twice as fast as the creature. But at this rate, we were going to need to fight all night and I could already feel the fatigue weighing on Saple.“You would b

We flew to the castle. But the closer we got, the darker it was. Trees were quickly losing leaves but it was the wrong season for that. The air was cold.“The keeper is drawing life out of everything within its reach. It has an unending hunger. The devastation will reach the next village by night fall if we don’t stop it now.” Saple rumbled.I didn’t need a reminder of how scary this was and knowledge like that didn’t seem helpful. But it came from my own dragon! I admired the wisdom that was now available to me and am grateful for the wonderful company.“Does the keeper have power over the skies?” I asked. As we approached the castle, the sky grew overcast with dark grey clouds. They were unusual. While the clouds were heavy and
