Surgery
Roslyn wore a frown on her face as she continue to stare down at her husband, âjust this morning my husband was healthy but look at âim now,â Mrs. Williams stretched out her right out reaching out for the younger woman shoulder, she placed her hand on her shoulder in a soothing manner. âMy deah do not be dismayed. I believe God has a purpose for this; we should be happy that heâs still aliveâ, Roslyn stared; not knowing what else to say because her mother was right, but she canât help the tears in her eyes. âPerhaps I should go home and get him some new clothes and hot water.â Roslyn eyed David yet again, âyes and ya also need some rest; you look exhausted.â Said Roslynâs mother; Roslyn swiftly stood to her feet. âPlease take your time. Iâll be here.â Roslyn nodded her head in response and reluctantly walked out of the door, with Bella trailing behind her. âWhere are ya goinâ? Bella looked at Roslyn but said nothing. The two ladies trudged out of the hospital to where their car was parked. They settled in a comfortable, silent. Bella opened her mouth to speak but closed it back, she glance at her sister for the third time and a flutter of sadness passed over her delicate face; she remembered those days at home. Roslyn used to be the happiest and yet emotional one in the family, but seeing her now makes her sad. âIâm awfully sorry about your husband, sis,â Bella said again. Roslyn mutely nodded her head. âDo ya sâposed we should take him to another hospital?â âWhy, what happened to this hospital?â Roslyn bargained as her eyes gazed at the hospital through the side mirror. âWell, not that somethinâ is wrong with St. Luke but knowing David heâll like to be taken to the most expensive and well-equipped hospital.â âStop it Bella,â Roslyn said above her normal voice. She doesnât mean to yell at her sister, but she doesnât like what she said. âYa know, for a moment you sound like David; my concern now is for David to come around.â Bellaâs body sagged. Now she feels guilty for thinking about stupid things instead of the well-being of her sisterâs husband. âIâm sorry Roslyn, but ya think, mother and I didnât notice the sad look in your eyes when ya came to the house. I know youâre not happy, and I know David is not treating ya like a wife. I worry that heâll make trouble when he finally comes around.â Bella said apologetically. âOh, deah was it that obvious?â she asked with a weak smile on her face. âBut David isnât that bad. I know deep down heâs a nice person and I know when he finally comes around heâll have more things to worry about, like his legs and arm.â She said jokily, attempting to light up the mood. âYes, right?â Bella quickly sobered from her laughter. She reached out for Roslynâs hand that was lying on her thigh and slightly massages it. âSo, will you allow them to amputate his legs?â Bella softly asked, âNo, no,â Roslyn hurriedly said, âIâll never let them cut off my husbandâs legs no matter what.â Said Roslyn with determination, âRoslyn, I think ya should let the doctor do their job. They know whatâs best for him at this momentâ âPlease donât say that. Only God knows what is best for David. I know David isnât much of a believer, but I have faith that heâll be fine and heâll get to walk on his two feet again; Iâll not let them cut off his legs when God can actually heal him.â When they got to the mansion, Roslyn did not bother to let Bella set the brake. She immediately reached for the door handle and stepped out; her gazed, focused on the entrance door. An inaudible sigh left Bellaâs lips as she watched her sister hurriedly strode into the mansion. After setting the brake, Bella opened the door on the driver's side and stepped out, imitating her older sister. When she finally got into the sub-standard living room; her sister was nowhere in sight and so she went to make herself comfortable on the sofa, waiting for Roslyn to show up. Roslynâs lips tremble as she continues to forage through Davidâs dresser, this is her first time going into his dresser, getting what she need from his dresser was getting more difficult by the moment, it equally annoys her she doesnât even know where her husband keeps his boxers and singlet. The tears she had been trying to control for a while now came flowing down to her cheeks; she wiped the tears away using the back of her right hand and continues to search into the drawers. Roslyn sigh, feeling a bit of relief when she opened the last drawer and so what she has been looking for, for the past thirty minutes. Without wasting much time she picked some of his boxers, singlet and went for his trousers and shirt, scrutinizing them, Roslyn picked two pairs of trousers and shirts, putting it inside a small bag she dashed out of the room closing the door behind her. âYou are done?â Bella asked the moment she saw Roslyn walked into the living room, âjah, can we get back before David wakes up?â she bargained, looking at her sister inquisitively. âCalm down sis, mother is there with âim even if he wakes up, perhaps ya should go freshen up. Itâll make ya feel better.â Bella said, looking at Roslyn sympathetically. âNo, we need to get back before David wake up, I want to be there when he finally open his eyesâ, Roslyn insisted making her way to the exit but her sister has refused to follow her, Roslyn opened the front door and stepped into the frigid air but came to a halt when she noticed her sister wasnât following her, she sigh with her left hand on her hipbone, not knowing what else to do she hesitantly walked back into the mansion and she was surprised to see Bella with a cup of coffee clutched to her hands. âWhat are ya doingâ? âSipping coffee,â replied Bella, a frown passed Roslyn's face; It clearly irritated her with her sister, but she tried her possible best to stay serene. Knowing her sister will not agree to come with her to the car, Roslyn feet hurried on the staircase as she rushed back to her room to take a quick bath. Slipping to her weary skin she entered the fragrance water she loved the feeling of the hot water on her ached muscles, Roslyn wished she can stay for sometime inside the water but her thoughts lingered on David at the hospital, she doesnât want her husband to wake up and find her absent. Roslyn tilted her head to the mirror and saw how puffy and red her eyes were. âGod, I need ya to talk to meâ, she breathes with her gaze still on the mirror. âI hope Iâm making the right decision,â she continues to talk to herself through the mirror; her churning thoughts are making her head ache and whirled already. She sat down forlornly inside the bathtub; she prayed that she has made the right decision concerning her husbandâs damaged legs. The doctor said theyâll love to carry out the surgery on David tomorrow morning and they need Roslyn to sign and give her consent, but Roslyn has refused to sign. Roslyn neared the dresser with a white towel tied around her chest. She picked the only gown closer to her and closed the dresser. After slipping the gown over her head, she went to her bedside drawer and brought out her bible. She thought of using the old bible her mother gifted to her, but she remembered that she left it together with her bag at the hospital. Meticulously, she opened the scripture that has to do with Godâs healings power, âand the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them; and speaks unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.â She breathes to herself. She knows painfully that David is not a believer, and she pondered on how sheâs going to change her husband to believe in God because only does who believe and have faith receive Godâs healing in their lives. Roslyn passed her right hand over her temple as her head continue to ache. Remembering that she needed to be at the hospital soon, she dropped the bible on the bed and quickly dashed out of her room. She went down the stairs to meet her sister talking to one of their maid. âGood evening ma lady,â Tessa greeted, looking at Roslyn with so much pity. âEvening Tessa, Iâll not be back not until tomorrow; please inform others and please take care of the house.â Tessa mutely nodded her head in response. âIâm sorry for what happened, malady,â Tessa said before Roslyn and Bella could leave the room. âThank- thank you, deah,â Roslyn shuttered. She could easily feel the trembling of her lips as she swallowed the lump in her throat. âAre you okay?â Bella asked, looking intensely at her sister. Even though she just finished taking her bath, she still looks toned and perplexed. âOf course Iâm okay,â she said convincingly. Bella did not believe her, but she chose not to pry. The two young ladies drove back to the hospital in silent. Roslyn slid out of the car the moment Bella parked the car, and it took them less than minutes to get to Davidâs hospital room. Mrs. Williams looked past her shoulder when she heard the door opened and her body sagged when she saw Roslyn and Bella. âI told ya to have some rest,â says the older woman, with her eyes darting between the two young women. âWell, Roslyn wouldnât agree; I hardly get her to take a bath,â Bella said softly, returning to her previous seat. âI know itâs hard on ya, deah, but ya shouldnât stress yourself too much; weâre here for you.â Roslyn couldnât help but to cry. Sheâs happy to know that her family is here with her at this crucial and difficult moment of her life. Roslyn immediately leaped to her motherâs arm and her mother held her tight, placing Roslynâs head on her firmed breast. âDid he at least blink his eyes?â Roslyn finally asked her mother the troubling question that had been on her mind since they entered the room with her sister. Her mother looked at her with sad eyes and Roslyn immediately know the answer to her question, she sigh and nuzzle out of her motherâs arms. She went to seat at the edge of the bed where she can easily see Davidâs pale face. Later that evening, Roslyn sat down alone in the empty chair, caressing Davidâs bandaged head. Her mother and Bella had left an hour ago after praying for David. A faint smile lingered on Roslynâs face as she remembered her few weeks with David back at the mansion. She never had a wonderful moment with âim but she would rather have those sad moments with her arrogant husband healthy than watching him lie down on this horrible hospital bed because his silent is killing her already. âIâve missed you.â She said, talking to the sleeping figure in front of her, not caring if he hears her or not. âBelieve it or no David I missed ya, they might force me to marry ya but I love ya because I know deep down in ya is a nice and loving man.â She continues to speak. She covered her face with her hands as the salty tears continue to drop from her eyes, but she did not care to wipe the tears away. Roslyn stroked her hair. âI wonât let them amputate your legs, I promise.â If David was to be awake, what Roslyn said could have tugged his heartstrings for sure. Not knowing what else to do or say, Roslyn reached out for the old bible in her bag and opened it effortlessly. She prayed softly and read the scripture to the unconscious man before her. Through her prayers, the door opened, revealing the doctor in his white lab code. âGood evening doctor,â Roslyn greeted softly, standing to her feet. The doctor walked past her and stood close to the bedside, looking down at David with a faint smile on his face. âGood evening, maâam,â replied the doctor, writing on his chipboard. âWeâre still waiting for ya in case you change your mind.â He began. âI trust God to heal my husband. I sâpose there are other medications ya can administer to âim.â The doctor stares at Roslyn like she was crazy; the doctor thought that Roslyn was a brave woman to make such decision even when it concerns her beloved; in his ten years as a medical practitioner, he has never seen a woman who has chief hope and faith in God like Roslyn. Most women would have signed the paper for their husbandâs legs to be amputated but here stand Roslyn with her bible clutched to her chest insisting that her husband legs shouldnât be cut off because God has promised his people healing and she believe God will never fall them. âWell, the best thing we can do for your husband is to administer some pain relievers that will help reduce the pain when he finally comes around and Iâll get ya a nurse to help clean and treat the legs daily; thatâs all we can do for him, like you said God does all things well, letâs keep hoping and believing in âim.â Said the doctor making his way to the exit, he stood at the door and turned to Roslyn, âI like your bravery,â a sad smile appeared on Roslynâs face, with her head bow low she softly mutter thank you to him and he walked out of the room. Roslyn went back to reading her scripture, determined not to corral her thoughts and the empathy she felt or else she lose faith in God. Two weeks had passed, and David didnât even blink an eye or move a finger. Roslyn feels sad and didnât know what to do anymore. Her daily routine has been cleaning David up, disposing of his excretes; making sure he is comfortable, praying and reading the scripture to him. Her mother and her sister Bella have been of tremendous help to her and sheâs grateful to them. Sometimes she find herself by asking God what she did to him to put such a heavy burden on her, but her mother kept encouraging her never to lose faith in God. Roslyn blew out a sigh when she opened the entrance door to the mansion, the last time sheâd been home was six days ago when she came to get David more clothes, she has refused to leave his side even when her mother and Mrs. Leo plead with her to go home and get some rest, she always have an excuse not to go. Mercy ran to the door the moment she sighted Roslyn at the door. She was happy to see that Roslyn has finally come home even if it was just for a while. âWelcome malady,â she reached out for the small bag in Roslynâs hand and moved aside, making way for Roslyn to pass. Roslynâs hand left her side as she used her hand to wipe away the invisible sweat on her forehead. âThank-thank you Mercy, howâve ya been?â she bargained, making her way to the nearest sofa. âWeâve been good, ma lady; any improvement on boss yet?â Mercy couldnât help but to notice the sudden change in Roslynâs mood and she felt a twinge of concern for her mistress. âIâm awfully sorry ma lady, we worry about ya and the boss and weâve been praying earnestly for the both of ya.â âOh deah, thank you all for your prayers; I still believe David will arouse from his slumber soon and weâll come in no time.â Roslyn didnât know if she was only trying to assure her maid or trying to reassure herself. âExcuse me if ya donât mind, Iâll love to get to my room now for a warm bath.â She stood up and shuffle her way to her room. Roslyn could easily feel her aching legs as she climb the stairs. Her eyes are burning due to lack of sleep because she stays awake and fretted all nights just to check up on David and sometimes change his pant. Roslyn allowed her weight to fall on the bed and another sigh escaped her lips. It feels so good to lie down on her queen-size bed again. Roslyn woke up later in the evening, scrutinizing her environment. She looked confused at first, but when she tilted her head to the side and saw that she was in her room, her mind calm down for a bit. Checking the watch on her bedside, she realized that sheâd indeed over slept, but she feels better now. Having no reason to remain in bed, she quickly slid out of bed and went straight to the bathroom; she took a quick bath and dressed up in a simple long gown before dashing out to Davidâs room. Shoving more clothes inside the small bag on Davidâs bed, Roslyn dashed out of the room with the bag hanged on her shoulder, her feet hurried on the stairs as she make her way outside the mansion skipping yet another dinner at home, she was fortunate to leave the mansion meeting none of the maids on her way out.Hurting Roslyn couldn’t believe her eyes when she walked into the white room; she stood looking directly at David’s now opened legs. With a quickening of Roslyn’s pulse, she subconsciously moved further into the room. She swallowed the lump in her throat, holding back the tears in her eyes. For the first time, she was glad David hasn’t waked up yet. The pain in her heart was too much for her to bear, and she allowed the tears encompassed her eyes freely. Each time the doctor and nurse want to dress David’s wound, she’ll be asked to excuse them and she always wondered why they would ask her to
Home The past four months. It was nothing but pain and sorrow for both David and Roslyn; it was such a dreary year for Roslyn precisely. While David was swimming in pains Roslyn was swimming in sorrows. Roslyn entered the mansion without rapping on the door. Her thighs ached, and her eyes burn and her head whirled because of exhaustion. The last time she visited home was two weeks and four days ago, she’d stopped coming home because she feared David will need her if she decide to come home and so the maids have been the ones bringing new clothes, and food to her at the hospital. She mutely went up to her room and galloped to the bathroom for a good shower. She stared at herself in the mirror; Roslyn was aging more than her age, thirty-six, but she understands why. The dark circles around her eyes
The visit Roslyn pressed her plump lips together, trying hard not to give in to her emotions. The agony, pain and suffering are too much for her to bear. The past three months have been nothing’ but pure sadness in the household, no one seemed to breathe. David continues to blame Roslyn for his unfortunate incident. He called her bad luck, but she never reacted to any of his cursed because she knows how depressed he was. She remembered how David kicked the plate of food she dished out to ‘im and then pure the cold water on her body the other day. She left home that day to her parent’s home but her mother was quick to send her back to her husband. Roslyn could remember her mother’s words that day; “go back to your home, your husband needs ya now more than ever; my deah never give up on your husband, for God has a purpos
Attraction Roslyn dressed herself in an elegant Sunday dress, hoping for a beautiful day with God in church. She hoped David will come with her. Looking at her slender body and nude make-up for the last time, she strode out of her room, shutting the door behind her. With reverent enthusiasm, she knocked softly on David's door. His muffled voice floated out of the room and Roslyn took it as a queue for her to enter. Roslyn entered the door and stood at the door, scrutinizing the room. The room wasn’t looking presentable and Roslyn was sure she cleaned the room two days ago. “What do ya want this early morning?” David questioned, and Roslyn tilted her head to the side, trying to figure out where the voice was coming from. “It’s Sunday, perhaps ya would like to go to Sunday service with me.&rd
Dave There was a series of laughter on the table; as the family makes fun of each other during lunch, Mrs. Williams never failed to tell David about Roslyn’s most embarrassing moments as a child. David continues to laugh as Mrs. Williams narrates the stories; Roslyn Blushed with embarrassment. She continued to beg her mother to stop embarrassing her, although she liked the fact that her mother was making David laugh, for the past one year she’s known David she’s never seen him laugh the way he was laughing at her mother’s childhood story. Roslyn couldn’t help the butterflies in her stomach; she glances at David at every given opportunity; she likes the way his eyes sparkled and radiates happiness. “Oh God, let this happiness for a lifetime.” She silently prayed as she chewed on her food.
Cancer The next day David awakened Roslyn; Roslyn slowly stirred and looked at her surroundings. Her head shut up the moment she realized she was in a hospital room; she glances at the window but there was no light from the window; she wore a frown on her face and glance at her wristwatch; her. It was 4:30 in the morning. “Its morning; can we go home now?” David’s voice echoed in her ears. She tilted her head to the side and looked at him. “Oh deah, it’s only 4:30.” She said glancing at her wristwatch for the second time, “but I wish to go home.” he whispered and groaned like a wounded child, “patience deah, the doctor should be here in no time.” She said persuasively, “do ya want anything else?” Roslyn asked, changing the topic. David shakes his mutely, and the two settled in a pause silent, with
Expecting Roslyn shivered as the brisk wind greeted her face; she hastily went to her dresser and retrieved her crocheted shawl her mother gave to her about two years ago and wore it over her loose blouse. She went back to stand close to the glass wall. Winter has approached in no time; Roslyn stared from her room as the wind continues to blow nonstop. She saw in the news last night that the weather would be around 10 degrees Celsius, but the temperature out there was obviously cooler than 10 degrees Celsius; she gazed at the garden below her and smiled; most of the flowers bloomed beautifully, especially the perennials and black tulips. She stared mostly at the winter Aconite which has already formed buttercup and a yellow bloom that boldly pops up between the cyclamens; it was such a beautiful sight for Roslyn. If it wasn’t for the cold, sh
Complication “Son, thank you for coming,” Roslyn’s father whispered. “You are welcome sir; how do ya feel?” Asked David; The older man laughed cordially. “I feel older than my age. How have ya been curbing?” asked Roslyn’s father as he stared at the wheelchair his son-in-law sat in. “Oh, very well sir; I’ve been undergoing therapy for a while now, there has been enormous change; can easily move around my room without using the wheelchair although I get exhausted easily.” Mr. Williams nodded his head, understandably. “Great—great; I’m happy to hear that. Ya told your wife I s’posed.” David nodded his head but said nothing, “She hasn’t confronted me, but my wife told me.” “Beastly.” Said David, “I’m awfully sorry it was my entire fault;
Less pain, more joy Roslyn and Mrs. Anne chattered. It was almost evening that the minister inconspicuously walked into the kitchen wearing a bright smile on his face. Roslyn swiftly stood to her feet with her head dropped to the ground. “Good evening, sir,” she greeted him before. “Evening-evening deah; how’s everyone at home?” he asked with sparkle still lingering in his eyes. “They’re all well, sir,” said Roslyn as she meticulously settled back in her chair. “Oh, and your mother, I haven’t seen much of her at the church.” Roslyn slightly smiled at the minister; “my mother is fine; she’d buried herself with so much work that she hardly has time for herself too.” Said Roslyn good-naturedly; “I see,” he said softly as he settled on the empty chair beside his wife. &ldq
Jealousy Roslyn's eyes fleet opened at the first rooster crow. Her gaze fell on her dress, which was neatly hanged on the door, and a bright smile find its way to her face. The day had finally come, the day her sister would be joined in a holy matrimony. With reverent enthusiasm, Roslyn crooned as she climbed out of bed. Roslyn’s feet hurried down the stairs as she glances at her wristwatch for the tenth time; David sat down patiently at the table, waiting for Roslyn. He’d already dressed for the wedding and he wondered what was keeping Roslyn. Perhaps she wanted to look beautiful than the bride. His gaze fell on the stairs as the clicking sound of Roslyn’s shoes floated into the room; “Oh my, ya look stylishly beautiful.” David muttered, standing on his feet; Roslyn looks si
Anniversary Roslyn judged it to be the happiest and alluring week she’d ever experienced since the day she got married. When she first got married, everything seemed darker and wore, but now each day seemed blissful, perfect and light. On this blustery and cold day, Roslyn thought about her plan to prepare for their wedding anniversary; “how many guests should I invite?” she’d asked David for the tenth time, but he never gave her the answer she wanted. Each time she asked him, David only smile and shrugged his shoulder. Roslyn descended the stairs with a small notebook and pen clutched in her hand; when she got to the sitting room, she found Bella already making her-self comfortable with a glass of fine wine in her hand; she stared at Bella for a moment and a soft smile passed
Get together It was such an exciting moment for Roslyn; she stared at all the smiling faces around the table and secretly thanked God for the gift of such a wonderful family he’d blessed her with. The only thing that worried Roslyn at that moment was Tessa; she worried for the poor woman; she was a woman that anyone would call a virtuous woman. Tessa was a woman clothed with strength and dignity. Roslyn remembered when Tessa single handedly do all the house chores and take care of Bernard when Mercy visited home and Roslyn was mourning her deceased father. “My deah, do ya not feel well?” Mrs. Leo asked, looking at Roslyn with a twinge of concern; everyone at the table stared at Roslyn; Roslyn slowly and steadily looked up and flushed in embarrassment. “What is happening to ya?” Mrs. Williams bargained. There was a preliminary
Turmoil During bed time, David scarcely talked to Roslyn and Roslyn wasn’t bold enough to say a word to David either. There was a curtain of tension inside the room and it was almost choking Roslyn. She wanted to ask David to pray with her, but she wasn’t so sure if that was a good idea to begin with. “Oh lord, I feel like I’ve lost my beloved husband again.” Roslyn breathes; she sat down forlornly on the bed and watched as David kept fidgeting on the bed; Roslyn knew that it would take by the grace of God for him to fall asleep. “My deah, can we pray?” Roslyn asked solicitously; and waited for David to speak. “Please,” she pleaded after a moment of silent. “Let’s table our problems before God.” She went on; “It’s your pain I feared. I know what it feel
Memories Roslyn jump out of the room the moment she heard the thumping sound of the door downstairs; she’d been pacing around their room for hours waiting for David to return from work. She came to a halt in the sitting room and stared at David as he stumbled into the room, almost smashing the flower vase beside the door. Roslyn immediately ran to his side when she’d noticed that he wasn’t with his walking stick. “Ya are drunk again,” she snarled and grimaced at the horrid smell coming from David’s breath, “why are doin’ this to yourself? “She asked, wrapping her right hand around his shoulder, “I don’t know what has gotten into ya, but whatever it is, please don’t let it destroy ya and our home.” She said pleadingly. Roslyn swallowed the lump that formed in her throat and
Alcohol Summer had progressed; the night sky was heather-purple color, the stars were glittering like scattered space dust. Mrs. Williams stood at the balcony with her head raised to the elegant sky above her and the beaked chorus of birds filled her ears, if it wasn’t for the ache heart and the lonesomeness she feels, she would have been enjoying the peaceful serene before her. It’s been two months since Williams passed away, but she still hasn’t been herself. She’d been enduring a degree of isolation and she’d graciously distance herself from people. She scrambled through her whirling thoughts, ignoring the melodious sound of the intoning bees that has filled the stew smell air. “Oh Williams, we are we’re now far apart from the kingdom of the world; I live most miserably and I languished in pain; m
Another kind of pain At first David was adamant to letting Roslyn see her father at the hospital, but seeing her persistent, he allowed her with the condition that she would come back home before nightfall. David feared for Roslyn and the unborn child she was carrying; he remembered what the doctor told him a few days ago, but he knows how Roslyn can be when it comes to caring for her family. “Ya worry too much; I’ll be back before ya know it.” Roslyn said, taking her car key from the small coffee table. David was still unsure of Roslyn’s decision to go to the hospital, but nodded his head. “Please allow the driver drive you.” He said worriedly. Roslyn slightly nodded her head and slipped out of the room. Roslyn breathes deeply as she stood at the door to her father’s ward. She suddenly felt uneas
