Ellie's POV:

"Eww, you've got it all over my lips!" I laughed as my mother playfully dabbed some of the facemask on my mouth.

"But it's honey flavored Ell's". She giggled.

"It tastes nothing like honey!" I tried to stifle my laughter, every time I opened my eyes and saw how ridiculous she looked in her own yellow facemask.

"This gets you back for pasting it onto my eyebrows!"

"I was giving you a hair removal at the same time!"

"Well, looks like I'm giving you a snack at the same time then, doesn't it!" She beamed.

Just as she wiped the mask off of her fingers, a loud pinging noise came from the kitchen. "Oooh that'll be the cake! It should be ready now!"

"Good! I need something to get rid of the horrible mask taste in my mouth!" I replied as I hung out my tongue in distaste.

"I have to go Ell's". She suddenly said as she stared at me.

"To get the cake?"

"No Ell's".

"Mum, what are you doing?" I asked as she got to her feet. And without another word she was gone. I blinked, then found myself sitting in the armchair, with her in front of me, lying on the floor. As she sat up, I could see her face was covered in blood. "Mum.." My voice shook.

I looked up as I felt another presence in the room. Tallon walked in, with an arrow sticking in his chest. "TALLON!" I yelled as I got to my feet. "WHAT HAPPENED? YOU CAN'T BE HERE, IF YOU'RE CAUGHT IT'LL START A WAR!" I tried to rush over to him, but my legs would barely move as I willed them to move faster, confused to why they were barely reacting.

"Ells". My mum spoke. "Are you coming with me, or are you staying with them?" She asked as she stood, suddenly wearing a long white night gown that was blowing around at her feet and I could feel a cold breeze all around me.

"Go with you where? What's happening?" I asked as I looked at them both as fear began to wash over me.

"You can join me!" She said calmly as she reached out her hand for me to take.

"They're going to kill you. They want to kill us all!" Talon voiced as blood trickled down from his chest.

"I have to go now, come with me!" My mum said again as she started to fade.

"NO! MUM WAIT!" I screamed as I tried to reach out to her.

Once again, she vanished and so did Talon. I looked around me, to see that I was standing at the forest river, shivering in my little blue dress. Out of nowhere, my dad appeared in front of me, staring at the ground. "Dad!" I whispered as every part of my body trembled.

He didn't answer, just remained motionless. "DAD!" I shouted as I grabbed his arms. "DAD, IT'S ME, IT'S ELLIE!" I yelled as I shook him to acknowledge me. "DAD, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? LOOK AT ME! WHERE'S MUM? WHAT'S GOING ON?" Tears began to fill my eyes as he kept failing to hear and see me. He stepped out of my grip, turned around and walked away as I continued to call out to him! "DAD! DAD!" I cried.

The snap of a twig made me flinch, as I looked in the direction it came from to see Kyan standing in the forest, hiding in the shade of the trees.

A chill went down my spine when I felt as if a shadow was lurking behind me. "RUN ELLIE!" Kyan shouted, then ran in the other direction. I looked behind me as I tried to scan the throng of trees that surrounded me, when my eyes caught a glimpse of a dark silhouette flashing through them. My feet were rooted to the ground as my body shook and goosebumps erupted all over my skin.

"Ellieeee!" A faint voice called as the shadow whooshed past again. "Ellieee!" It taunted. But I couldn't move, I felt stuck...frozen. Not even my arms unwrapped themselves from around my waist.

"GO AWAY" I shouted. "FUCK OFF, LEAVE ME ALONE!"

The shadow laughed as it echoed around me, feeling closer with every second.

"Ellie, come with me!" My mother's voice sounded as she appeared in front of me again. "it's not safe! Come with me!"

"Where mum, where?" I sobbed, in complete desperation.

"Just let go, and come with me".

"Ellie, you need to run!" I heard Kyan say as he ran through the trees.

"You're mine!" The shadow claimed as I felt it lurking in every direction and watching me. "The vampire lover is mine!" The deep voice rang out.

"Ellie, quick!" My mother urged me with panic pouring from her eyes. "They did this to me!" She said as more blood began to cover her clean white gown. "They'll do it to you! Come with me!"

"Vampire lover?" My father said as he appeared next to me. "You can't love a vampire!" He seethed. "You've betrayed us all!" He frowned as he looked at me in disgust. "You have to choose Ellie!"

"Choose what?" I cried back to him.

"Choose me!" My mother spoke as she looked up to the sky. "You'll be safe with me!" She implored.

A sudden cold drip hit my face. I wiped it away with my fingers as more drips came. I looked at my hand to see it was blood splatting all over me and covering the ground.

"I'll get you! YOU'RE MINE!" The shadow's deep voice boomed just as lightning struck the treetops and turned the leaves into flames.

"You have to pick Ellie!" My dad scorned as he walked away from me again. I turned to face my mother to see she was also gone. There was no one. No shadow, no Kyan! As the blood poured and the forest burned around me.

"FUCK YOU! FUCK YOUUU!" I screamed at the top of my lungs as my hands clutched at my head, trying to block it all out. I closed my eyes, willing for everything to stop... to just stop and let me breathe!

Kyan's POV: I slid the tips of my fingers across the slashes in the tree trunk, I could feel the deepness of them and somehow I could sense the fury. Kiko was right, these weren't the markings of a bear or any other wild animal, these marks belonged to one of our own! An anxious flicker thumped in my heart as I thought of Zekan and the possibility of these being his or Lyra's. A fight definitely happened here, but what bothered me more is that we hadn't found their whereabouts yet, no news of them passing through any lands or being aboard any of our ships. A horrible sinking feeling was setting in at the thought of them being alone out here, fighting for their lives and dying because of it and as much as I dislike Lyra, I hated the thought of my brother's last moments being of him having to try and save her and himself whilst watching the hunters take her life right in front of his eyes. Lyra was vicious, of course, but not much of a tactical fighter, so I doubt they would have sto

Kyan's POV: I sat at the table as everyone began to gather around and take their places. For the first time since the attack, we were finally dining together once again. I felt a flare of irritation as Magnus chose the seat next to me. The last two days he's been here, he's done nothing but put both me and my father on edge, making us suspicious of everyone, questioning the loyalty and trustworthiness of the ones we have come to call family. I could already feel him grinning whilst he eyed everyone suspiciously as they tucked in at the table waiting for father to take his seat at the head of the table. "It warms me to see everyone here, with the exception of Vaughn, but I know we all understand why he doesn't feel ready yet to dine with us all. We are facing hard times". Father announced to the table, his face etched with noticeable worry and guilt. "I regret that I cannot reassure you, we are through the worst of it. I won't hide the fact nor pretend what my instinct tells me....

Ellie's POV: "Ellieeeee" A voice whispered as I wiped my blurry eyes, trying to clear my distorted vision. I could feel a cold breeze whip across my skin as the hairs on my arms began to stand in alarm. "Ellieee" It came again, followed by a menacing chuckle, but it sounded like a woman's laugh. My vision cleared as I looked down to see I was bare feet in the forest as they nestled within all of the mud and twigs as thorns began to pinch my toes and break into my skin, but once again I found myself in a situation where I couldn't move and my chest felt tight and wrought like the air itself was squeezing tightly onto my ribs and not letting go. I looked up ahead to see three bodies emerge from the clearing in the trees. My breath hitched as I saw the three vampires me and Vaugh had shot at walking toward me with vengeful sneers. The bullet holes were still visible on their bodies as blood continued to spill from them, trickling all the way down to their feet, staining the earth bene

Kyan's POV: I stretched in the chair and tried to wake myself up after nodding off. I scooched over closer toward her and took her soft hand in mine, once again watching her sleep, wondering what she was dreaming of. All night she had been shaking, sweating, her hands were flinching and her breaths were erratic. I tried to speak to her, I tried to calm her, but it was only the last hour that she had finally calmed down and was resting silently. "Please wake up Ellie!". I sighed as I looked at her soft innocent face. Her eyes suddenly flashed open, staring wide-eyed at the ceiling as if in shock at her surroundings. "Ellie!" I spoke softly as I quickly stood and hovered over her so she could see she wasn't alone. Her eyes darted to me, but still wide with fright. In one quick second, her hand slammed against my neck as her fingers wrapped around and began to squeeze, her face contorted into one of anger. "Ellie!" I choked against her grip as I pried away her fingers and pinned bo

Ellie's POV: We hadn't left my room in the last twenty-four hours and, to be honest, I don't know why he never left. But here he was lying beside me on my bed face to face after he had listened to every word that came out of my mouth as I detailed my dreams to him. It still scared me, of how real they had felt and my instinct told me it was a sign of what's to come. I could even see it in Kyan's eyes, the concern and knowing look that we had only faced part of this battle. He tried to reassure me, of course, "You're safe now", "we'll get through whatever happens" he'd say, but he barely believed his own words, too much was unknown and too much was at stake. Right on our very own island, hunters and rogue vampires had joined forces right under our noses, in our very own territory! Bluebay town was no longer safe and hiding amongst the depths of the forest wasn't safe either. "Me and Kiko eavesdropped on an announcement your mayor gave to the town. Everyone is still against us, the

I chuckled as I happily hugged her back, a hug that was needed as I felt the comfort of a friend that I felt like I had known forever. "I can't believe you ran in front of that arrow! Honestly, we were all just so shocked! You seemed to have run out of nowhere!" "Well, i'm fine now". I shrugged as we pulled away from our hug. "I'm so glad you're ok too, but then I knew it would take more than just a few hunters to take the mighty Kiko down!" I giggled. "Too right! They didn't see me coming, did they?" She smiled back. "Did you hear about Vivian though and Hyvan?" "Yes, Kyan's told me everything. He said Vaughn is struggling". "He's.... it's like all that's left of him at the moment is rage". "It's understandable. One week later: I had spent every day training with Kiko, Kyan and Del. Each of them teaching me their own fighting skills that I was starting to master a little bit more. After each session in the gym, Kyan would make me practice getting myself onto his back and I was getting closer and faster each time. Not only was it benefiting us all and a necessity, but it was also a good distraction from the constant meetings and decisions on how better to protect ourselves, how to improve the searches and most of all... how to bring the town and the cold ones together. I found my connection with Kyan was growing more comfortable and stronger with every moment we spent together. If we were laughing, training or just discussing our lives before, things had changed so much and I noticed he had opened up a bit more with every conversation. He told me how much he used to hate being here and would leave every chance he got as the memories of this place only reminded him of his mother and his grandf

We stood on the top deck at the railings as we saw the Island come into view and the ships horn blasted into the sea breeze. As we came in closer, I could see two figures standing at the dock, waiting for it to anchor. As the ship finally pulled in, I could see it was an older man and woman, elegantly dressed in a black suit and an emerald, green gown.“Who are they?” I asked both Kyan and Talon, but neither of them answered, Kyan just squeezed my hand, with the biggest smile on his face and Talon patted my shoulder with a knowing look. But I watched his face as he looked from me and out to them and I thought I saw him looking slightly nervous, but it was gone too quickly for me to really know.We stepped off the ship and made our way over to them as they waited with bright smiles. Well, they seem friendly enough! I thought to myself, still wondering why Talon had looked a bit uneasy.&nbs

We had arrived at Shelter Island two nights ago, and from that moment, Donny and Marina were more than welcoming as they set us up in white and cream decorated guest rooms in their own castle with beds that were big enough to fit ten people in.Their castle wasn’t as large as ours back home, but it was so elegantly decorated, bright and modern. Their main dinner hall was all painted white and a pastel blue with a long glass table set in the middle for their meals, glossed white chairs around it. They even had several cream fabric couches against the walls for everyone to calmly relax in once they’d eaten. They had a hedge maze in their rear garden that stretched out as far as the eye could see and their own lake that swept through the edge of their trees. There were other smaller houses that were only half a mile from the castle that housed some of their permanent lodgers, couples, friends, families. It was a busy island, constant music, gatherings in the n

One month later:As I packed the last of my things I knew I’d need and zipped up my bag I quickly planted a kiss on Kyan’s cheek as I left the room to find Kiko.Four weeks ago, after I had been to my old house I had come back and told Kyan all about it. That was when he suggested that it would be good for us both to take a little trip together and kept talking of how much he wanted to introduce me to some of his oldest friends and for me to see more of his world, the world that I was now a part of.We had spoken to Talon and Zekan about it straight away, with Zekan assuring us he’d be more than capable to keep things going while we were away and Talon, was all too eager to join us, only he was choosing to extend his trip a lot longer than ours.I wanted to say goodbye to everyone, to remind them we were only a phone call away should they need us, but

Two weeks later.Me and Kyan didn’t take what Talon had asked of us lightly. The very next morning we had told him that from hereon out he was to show us everything we needed to know. We spent hours going through files of different islands where other vampires lived safely in anonymity. There were four other islands that housed just vampires and two others like our own, who had certain territory on a shared human island. We had to learn all the names and current whereabouts of the well known rogues, which ones were animal based feeders, and which hunted on human blood. It would be our duty to regularly know where they are along with the lords on the other islands, and for us to always keep one another up to date.Talon had already told mayor Jackson of his decision and that he had to now only converse with Kyan or myself. I knew that would mean, Andrew Jackson would have to announce it to the town and although they tru

“Wow, this looks incredible Faye”. Talon commented as we all gathered around the table. “Faye..” he quickly said as he placed his hand on her arm just as she finished placing the potatoes down. “Once all the food is brought out, I want the rest of you to sit with us, it’s been too long since we’ve all shared a meal together. Make sure you tell Bianca and Constance too”. “Of course, Talon. I’ll tell them all now. I’ll have Stuart call for Gerald, I think he’s in his room”. “Thank you Faye”. Just as she was leaving the room, Talon nodded for us all to sit down. “I knew the real Ellie was still in there”. Kyan whispered as he lightly brushed his fingers through my hair. All those problems were down there, but up on this hill, it was just me and him, alone, peacefully minding our own business, talking and making love all night.“I’m so scared Kyan. I’m scared that the moment we go back I’m going to become something I don’t even recognise again”. “I won’t let that happen sweetheart. I’ll do whatever it takes to not lose my Ellie”. Kyan’s POV:I stared at the roaring fire that swarmed over the pile of bodies. The flicker and snap of the flames erupted into the sky as bits of ash floated along, carried by the soft breeze. I looked up at the window of Ellie’s bedroom, wishing I was up there with her instead of seeing to this mess. I had hoped with every breath that she was still alive, I’d hoped I’d see her again safe and untouched. Of course, I knew I was hoping for a lot, my realistic side of my brain always told me she would have changed one way or another, that they’d damage her to a point…Only I had expected it would be bruises, cuts, tearing her down mentally. I never thought that if I got to see her alive again, it would be with her as a vampire, one of my kind, something I knew she was too sweet and kind for. Now, not only was she one of us but they did in fact manage to change her heart too. That crazed look I saw in her eyes, the w

The rest of that day and night was a blur. After Kiko had managed to successfully knock the rage out of me, the next time my eyes opened was to see her with Faye and Melanie washing all the blood and dirt off of me in the bathtub. I was still hazy, only keeping my eyes open for a minute at a time, as if my brain was still choosing to shut down the moment I’d wake up.“It’s ok, Ellie, we’re here. We got you”. I remember Melanie speaking softly with tears in her eyes. The next time I woke, I found myself tucked in my bed in Talon’s chambers. Clean clothes and not a trace of blood on my skin, I looked out the window to see it was almost sunset and everyone else were still outside, dragging the hunter’s bodies into a pile and carefully lining up our own that has died and the human’s side by side in front of the castle.I don’t know how, I don’t know what pa
