Ellie's POV:

We hadn't left my room in the last twenty-four hours and, to be honest, I don't know why he never left. But here he was lying beside me on my bed face to face after he had listened to every word that came out of my mouth as I detailed my dreams to him. It still scared me, of how real they had felt and my instinct told me it was a sign of what's to come. I could even see it in Kyan's eyes, the concern and knowing look that we had only faced part of this battle.

He tried to reassure me, of course, "You're safe now", "we'll get through whatever happens" he'd say, but he barely believed his own words, too much was unknown and too much was at stake.

Right on our very own island, hunters and rogue vampires had joined forces right under our noses, in our very own territory! Bluebay town was no longer safe and hiding amongst the depths of the forest wasn't safe either.

"Me and Kiko eavesdropped on an announcement your mayor gave to the town. Everyone is still against us, they believe we're to blame, so I don't think we're going to join forces and fight this one out together".

"All of these years!" I sighed. "all these years we've lived in peace. You all on your land and us on ours, and yet these hunters and rogues feel as if they have a right to just come along and wipe us all out! There had been no deaths on either side for so long".

"I know! I feel as though everything my father and the mayor tried to do to bring about the peace was all for nothing! I'd hate for him to spend his last weeks or months, or however long we've all got left fighting yet another battle, everyone's already lost so much".

"But what I don't understand is, why now? Why after we've had peace for so long? And how did the hunters and rogues even come together? That's what's bugging me the most... there's been no reason for it".

"Well, I mean, hunters will always want to kill my kind and rogues will always want to kill yours".

"Yes, but your father said that hunters barely even exist now and if all they wanted was to get rid of all of you, then why team up with rogues? There has to be something in it... something for each side to gain".

"Possibly! I know for a fact, rogues wouldn't work alongside hunters unless they were getting something worthwhile out of it. They neglected to tell my father who owns these part of the lands that they were here and they've broken a lot of strict rules. Those rogues wouldn't have been able to return to wherever they came from because they'd just be killed by the council".

"The council?"

"Yep. It's just a group of leaders, each of them have land and title of their own. They either live isolated with others of my kind or they live on shared land like us. Either way, if a land is occupied by a lord and rules are broken, its punishable by death".

"So, has your father told the council what's been happening?"

"He has. After the attack on the town, the council all came to agreement to send out a search and they'd send their own fighters to help and once the rogues were found they had to be killed. Of course, they're dead now anyway".

"Or so we think".

"I guess so, just like we thought we killed all of the hunters".

"How do you know we haven't? Have there been anymore clues?"

"It's just... a feeling. Every time we look out a window, it's like we can still feel them out there, we can feel the change in the forest. It no longer feels free anymore. This place has just become our cage and when my father feels something isn't right, he's never wrong and I feel it too, just as you do about your dreams telling you it isn't over".

"No, and I'm scared! I'm scared of how much more we're going to lose".

"Well, believe it or not, we may all be vampires here, but I can see the fear in everyone else too and Magnus isn't helping matters either!"

"Magnus, who's that?"

"It's Hyvan's brother! He has a vendetta now against the person he believes is responsible for his death".

"Wait! Hyvan died?" I asked wide-eyed... another person close to Talon that was taken, and it was him that had come to Talon's aid the moment he knew something was wrong.

"He did! My father has been racked with guilt and with Zekan still gone, you can see he's holding out for any hope that he's not dead too".

"Zekan's missing? But I thought..."

"They didn't make it off of the island. My father has spoken to everyone he knows and no one has seen him or Lyra".

"Oh, Kyan! I'm sorry, you must be so worried!"

"Well, at first I wasn't, but we went out to see if we could find either of them, but all I found were claw marks. It looked as though there had been a struggle".

"I'm sorry and I really do hope that he's ok". I told him honestly as I timidly slid my hand across the space between us and rested it over his in comfort, expecting him to immediately move his away, but to my surprise he chose to lace his finger through mine instead. The cool of his touch mixing so gently with the warmth of mine.It formed a flutter in my stomach at how right the two opposites seemed to fit. "Well, at least we have someone else with us now that wants to fight against them".

"I can't tell if he really working with us or against us!"

"Why would he be against us?"

"He believes there's a spy amongst us".

"Well, we thought there was anyway".

"Yes but...". He was just about to tell me, when Talon's voice sounded from outside my door, accompanied by someone else's who I didn't recognise. "That's Magnus!" Kyan informed me with a sigh.

"Good! It's another head and pair of eyes that could help us find out why and how this is all happening".

"Yea, but I don't think he's looking in the right places".

"Is he questioning everyone? I think that's a good thing!".

"He is, but he's questioning some more than others and particularly the humans that live here, including you". He said with stern eyes, telling me to be prepared.

I could hear Talon's voice rise as he warned Magnus not to enter my room. "But, I hear she's been awake since yesterday! You did not tell me! So, now she's awake I can speak to her myself!" Magnus spoke back in a stony voice.

"When she's ready, then you can speak to her!".

"The girl is awake! So unless she's forgotten how to speak, I will speak with her right now!"

"YOU FORGET YOUR PLACE HERE MAGNUS! YOUR BROTHER MAY HAVE BEEN A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE, BUT I WILL NOT TOLERATE THE LACK OF RESPECT YOU HAVE SHOWN ME AND MY PEOPLE HERE! DO NOT MISTAKE MY KINDNESS FOR WEAKNESS, BOY!" Talon shouted back in a forbidding tone.

I quickly got off of the bed and opened the door, surprising both of them, including Kyan, who had instantly followed me and I could feel his presence towering behind me. "You must be Magnus?" I asked with a fake smile.

"And you must be the human everyone here seems so intent on protecting!" He retorted with a slight squint in his eyes, as if he was already studying me.

"Well, I don't know if you're aware, but we try and protect each other here. It's called having each other's backs, especially when we all have a common enemy out there!".

"Ahh yes! This enemy you all share!"

"Oh, I already know you suspect me and all the other humans here, I can't say that's surprising!"

"No, it wouldn't be a surprise to you, would it? Seeing as this wouldn't be the first time someone suspected you! I know that Lord Talon's own son didn't trust you and neither did his woman. Funny how they both seemed to have disappeared now! Wanted them out of the way, did you?"

"That's enough, Magnus!" Kyan intervened as he stepped around me until his whole body was in between me and Magnus.

"Why? afraid that I am right?" Magnus said with dauntless expression.

"You're not fucking right! You just want to pin it on the easiest person, so you can go home and tell your buddies how you exacted your revenge and chug your fucking drink like you're some sort of hero for your brother!"

"How about I remove you first, then I take my revenge on her next!" Magnus spat as he stepped daringly closer to Magnus.

"THAT'S ENOUGH!" Talon shouted as he swung his cane in both directions, smacking it against their chests, knocking them both to the floor. If I hadn't moved as fast as I did I would have went smashing down onto the floor along with Kyan.

I saw the furious look on Talon's face as he stood ready with his cane, preparing to use it again if either of them dared to stand back up. I stepped past Kyan who was clutching his chest as he sat on the floor, catching his breath from the sudden knock. I walked past Talon, feeling the anger radiating from him as I approached Magnus who was sat looking like some spoilt child that wasn't getting his own way. The stubbornness of his face was enough to send Talon to the end of his patience if I allowed this to carry on spiralling.

"I will find out if you're the spy, mark my fucking words!" He spoke spitefully and all I could think was, Here we go again! here we fucking go! Once again, I'm the one being blamed for all of this shit!

"You know what! Question me, go search my room, watch me like a hawk, I don't care anymore! I've got nothing to hide, so feel free to waste your time watching me, cause you won't find a goddam thing to pin against me! So fuck you!" I said confidently as I gave him a strong glare, "you don't fucking scare me!" I told him defiantly before I walked past, with my head held high, and left the room.

Left the men to their little spats! I had other, more important things to do...If my dreams taught me something, it was that, even after the training I had done, when it came to standing against the hunters and the rogues, I still had too much fear that held me back, so off I went to find Kiko and demand more extensive training.... next time, I wouldn't hide under some staircase, I'd fight back! Against the fuckers that led to my mum and half my town being killed!

"I'm so glad you're ok!" Kiko cheered as she enveloped me in a hug the moment I stepped into the training room, she didn't hesitate to rush over to me. "Yea it was a close call, apparently!" I chuckled as I happily hugged her back, a hug that was needed as I felt the comfort of a friend that I felt like I had known forever. "I can't believe you ran in front of that arrow! Honestly, we were all just so shocked! You seemed to have run out of nowhere!" "Well, i'm fine now". I shrugged as we pulled away from our hug. "I'm so glad you're ok too, but then I knew it would take more than just a few hunters to take the mighty Kiko down!" I giggled. "Too right! They didn't see me coming, did they?" She smiled back. "Did you hear about Vivian though and Hyvan?" "Yes, Kyan's told me everything. He said Vaughn is struggling". "He's.... it's like all that's left of him at the moment is rage". "It's understandable. But if they're still out there, maybe he'll have the chance to take that r

"Well, good morning, nice to see you up and about!" Melanie greeted me as I walked into the kitchen. "Bianca told us you had woken up. I was so worried you'd fell into a coma or something!" She gasped dramatically. "How are you feeling?" "I'm feeling fine actually. The wound still hurts sometimes but I'm alive, so I can't complain!". I replied jokingly."Well, we were all so happy to hear you were ok. You gave us quite a scare!" "Yea, I'm just sad for Hyvan and Vivian. Things wouldn't feel so bleak if they had been ok too". "I know". She said with a shake of her head. "It seems as if the times have changed so drastically. So will you be staying here with us or going back to town?" "There's nothing really for me to go back to. An empty house that isn't safe to stay in and no friends or family left to see. I think i'll stay put". "Ahhh goodie!" She smiled as she clasped her hands together. "I was hoping you'd stay". "Yea, I think I'd miss you all too much if I left". I smiled back

One week later: I had spent every day training with Kiko, Kyan and Del. Each of them teaching me their own fighting skills that I was starting to master a little bit more. After each session in the gym, Kyan would make me practice getting myself onto his back and I was getting closer and faster each time. Not only was it benefiting us all and a necessity, but it was also a good distraction from the constant meetings and decisions on how better to protect ourselves, how to improve the searches and most of all... how to bring the town and the cold ones together. I found my connection with Kyan was growing more comfortable and stronger with every moment we spent together. If we were laughing, training or just discussing our lives before, things had changed so much and I noticed he had opened up a bit more with every conversation. He told me how much he used to hate being here and would leave every chance he got as the memories of this place only reminded him of his mother and his grandf

"Are you ready to try and convince everyone to understand our way of life?" Faye asked as we sat together in the kitchen with Melanie, after they insisted on feeding me before I left to go to Bluebay. I had felt nervous all morning at the thought of addressing them all when they'd all be aware of where I have been the past year. "I know what I want to say, it's just whether they will listen or not". "It won't be an easy task, that's for sure!" Melanie added with a doubtful expression. "I'd be surprised if even one person was open to the idea". Faye said, agreeing with Melanie. "But, they have to see how much better off we'd all be if we joined together!". "Uhh, you're asking them to join forces with what they consider to be blood sucking monsters". Faye smirked. "You know how they all think there, Ellie, you even thought the same way before you came here". "Yes, only because not one person ever told or taught me to know anything different. I'll be going there as a witness to

The sweat poured down my face as Del knocked me to the floor once again. My lungs and throat were burning while I tried to catch my breath, my back was red raw and tender from the amount of times it had been slammed against the mats. "Get to your feet!" He demanded as he walked back to his position. I pushed myself up and my arms and legs wanted to buckle beneath me. I had the urge to punch him for pushing every part of my body to breaking point, but I only had myself to blame. After all, I had told him over and over not to go easy on me but the motivation just wasn't with me today. I woke up angry and frustrated with everything and we all felt the same. Sick of being watched, being isolated and confined to these walls, having to train day after day. The neverending searches, finding nothing but a random foot or shoe print that lead to nowhere. Ten days had passed since we went to Bluebay and according to the mayor, not one person had shown any interest in us all uniting, despite th

"Good morning human!" I heard a deep voice across my bedroom as my eyes flickered open to see the daylight trying to shine through the drapes. I looked in the direction of the voice, half expecting it to be Del or Talon, the last person I expected to see hovering in my room whilst I was sleeping, was Magnus! I quickly sat up, shocked when I suddenly realised who was in my room. "If Talon see's you in here, you know he'll be pissed!". "Ahh, well, we don't have to worry about that, he left about two hours ago with your other bodyguards, Kyan and Del. They're still out there searching for Zekan". He scoffed with an unamused grin. "A fools errand if you ask me. After all this time they're still hoping he's alive out there". "Would you think them fools if it was Hyvan instead of Zekan? You don't know them at all, do you?" I asked I sat forward confidently leaning my arms on my knees. Trying to prove he couldn't intimidate me just because we were alone. "I think I know them well enoug

The loud banging of the main doors startled, Kiko, Kyan and myself as we just finished another session of our training. The two guards looked at Kyan with wide eyes, waiting for his command. We all stood, staring at the doors, our backs tensed, our breathing became heavier as we tried to prepare ourselves for what was on the other side of those doors. Not a sound, a tap had come from them since the day of the battle, no one had used them, as far as Talon was concerned, they were completely off limits to everyone. "Roman, go inform my father, quickly". Kyan whispered to one of the guards and with a quick nod, he dashed off to Talon's chambers. "WHO DARES TO TRESSPASS ON OUR LAND?" Kyan called out as he made his way closer to the reinforced doors, covered in metal planks and chains nailed to the old rustic ones that once stood beautiful and historic. "WE'RE SORRY, PL... PLEASE DON'T HARM US, WE... WE JUST WANTED TO TALK, WE NEED TO TALK TO ELLIE!" A woman's voice called back. "That'

The last two days, me and Kyan had decided to spend the nights tucked away together in Emma's old room. It was out of the way from everyone and it gave us more time to be ourselves, holding one another, kissing, talking, laughing. He kept reassuring me that everyone would be fine with the idea of me and him together, but I'd finally got him to understand, it is what Magnus would expect and the less he breathed down my neck, the better. He pulled me in closer toward him as he breathed in the smell of my hair as I rested against his chest. "Mmmm, I love these moments". He exhaled heavily. "I can't wait to have more of them with you". "I know, me too. I feel so safe, so calm when I'm with you". I murmured as I ran my hand across his hard muscles, picturing how good they looked underneath his shirt. He suddenly rolled me onto my back until he was positioned on top of me as he gave me a soft lingering kiss. "I mean it Ellie, you make me feel so much peace and I know that sounds stupid,

As we came in closer, I could see two figures standing at the dock, waiting for it to anchor. As the ship finally pulled in, I could see it was an older man and woman, elegantly dressed in a black suit and an emerald, green gown.“Who are they?” I asked both Kyan and Talon, but neither of them answered, Kyan just squeezed my hand, with the biggest smile on his face and Talon patted my shoulder with a knowing look. But I watched his face as he looked from me and out to them and I thought I saw him looking slightly nervous, but it was gone too quickly for me to really know.We stepped off the ship and made our way over to them as they waited with bright smiles. We had arrived at Shelter Island two nights ago, and from that moment, Donny and Marina were more than welcoming as they set us up in white and cream decorated guest rooms in their own castle with beds that were big enough to fit ten people in.Their castle wasn’t as large as ours back home, but it was so elegantly decorated, bright and modern. Their main dinner hall was all painted white and a pastel blue with a long glass table set in the middle for their meals, glossed white chairs around it. They even had several cream fabric couches against the walls for everyone to calmly relax in once they’d eaten. They had a hedge maze in their rear garden that stretched out as far as the eye could see and their own lake that swept through the edge of their trees. There were other smaller houses that were only half a mile from the castle that housed some of their permanent lodgers, couples, friends, families. It was a busy island, constant music, gatherings in the n

That was when he suggested that it would be good for us both to take a little trip together and kept talking of how much he wanted to introduce me to some of his oldest friends and for me to see more of his world, the world that I was now a part of.We had spoken to Talon and Zekan about it straight away, with Zekan assuring us he’d be more than capable to keep things going while we were away and Talon, was all too eager to join us, only he was choosing to extend his trip a lot longer than ours.I wanted to say goodbye to everyone, to remind them we were only a phone call away should they need us, but

Two weeks later.Me and Kyan didn’t take what Talon had asked of us lightly. The very next morning we had told him that from hereon out he was to show us everything we needed to know. We spent hours going through files of different islands where other vampires lived safely in anonymity. There were four other islands that housed just vampires and two others like our own, who had certain territory on a shared human island. We had to learn all the names and current whereabouts of the well known rogues, which ones were animal based feeders, and which hunted on human blood. It would be our duty to regularly know where they are along with the lords on the other islands, and for us to always keep one another up to date.Talon had already told mayor Jackson of his decision and that he had to now only converse with Kyan or myself. I knew that would mean, Andrew Jackson would have to announce it to the town and although they tru

Make sure you tell Bianca and Constance too”. “Of course, Talon. I’ll tell them all now. I’ll have Stuart call for Gerald, I think he’s in his room”. “Thank you Faye”. Just as she was leaving the room, Talon nodded for us all to sit down. I had hoped with every breath that she was still alive, I’d hoped I’d see her again safe and untouched.
