Chapter 1
Maya's pov
I tugged awkwardly at the seam of my dress, my sister pulled me again and I almost tripped on the high heels she forced on me, along with thick layers of makeup. She said I looked pretty; but I felt like a clown.
“Maya, Hurry! we're going to be late for the ceremony!”
She urged me while her eyes lit up.
“Aren't you excited to meet your mate tonight?” She asked, and I responded with a tight smile.
I only came because Barry would be here tonight.
He had been our friend since we were in diapers, and I looked forward to hanging out with him tonight.
But at the back of my mind I dreaded the idea of his mate showing up.
while she brimmed with positivity as she dragged me along until we entered the grand hall, where the ceremony was being hosted.
Several other young wolves like ourselves that had also reached adulthood littered the place, food and drinks were in abundance and the whole was adorned with scented candles and flowers to create a romantic air.
Gosh, I wanted to go home already.
But my sister held me in her iron grip, and a couple of eyes had begun to shift to our direction at our entrance. In the blink of an eye, a tall guy with dirty blond hair approached her to shamelessly flirt.
“Hi…” he greeted rather sheepishly.
Madeline, as the social butterfly that she was, replied with her characteristic cheek wide smile which was horrendous whenever I tried to pull it off but looked so natural on her.
Soon other guys trooped in to get her attention, this caused her to finally loosen her grip on my hand to entertain her fanboys.
I had only taken a couple steps away from her, but as I stared at the boys circling her and practically trampling each other to get her attention, my chest tightened.
Why did I let her talk me into coming here?
She always sparkled like a diamond left under the moonlight, while I was just a rock tossed in the shadows.
I should just leave.
I decided, tomorrow she will be livid with me for running off, but my presence here was less important than a piece of furniture lying around. So I turned around and the next thing I knew I hit a firm wall, or at least that was what I thought, then I stretched out my hand and the wall felt warm, just then the peculiarly comforting earthy smell of the soil after rain penetrated my nostrils.
That was when I looked up and another familiar pair of eyes was piercing mine.
It was Barry, and I didn't need anybody to tell me every fiber of my being screamed, “Mate!”
But instead of excitement, fear struck me and I took a few steps back almost tripping on these darn heels for the millionth time tonight, his arms pulled forward as to he was attempting to catch me before an expected fall but then he suddenly froze up when someone wrapped hold him from behind and the words I heard next made by heart stop.
“Mate!”
Just when I thought it's couldn't get worse, my mate stepped to the side revealing my twin sister who was wearing this look of peaked joy, she saw me and smiled from ear to ear.
“Maya, I've found my mate! Could you believe it was Barry all this time?”
She said, wrapping her arm across his own and yelling out to me I could hear the sighs of disappointed fans behind me…but I wasn't looking at them I was looking at him, MY mate.
Why wasn't he saying anything? I saw the way he looked at me earlier when we locked eyes…there was no way it was one-sided, that was the only explanation for the unbridled rage I was feeling now seeing my twin sister touch him so callously an-
I was barely done with that train of thoughts before their lips embraced passionately and then savagely, like the way the only people in the room and they didn't have more than two dozen pairs of eyes looking at them.
Reality pierced me like a pointed needle, of course he would choose my sister over me…everyone always did.
Before I could face the brutal rejection that was coming my way, I turned around to another door that led out into the garden outside…nobody noticed my exit.
Or at least that was what I assumed.
Not long after I crouched under a tree, heavy food steps followed my own. I lifted my head in alert.
“Who's there?!” I said, spinning my head around.
“Someone’s on edge,”
I followed the deep voice and saw a guy standing in front of me, he was tall- even taller than my mate- from his scent alone, I could tell he was invited from another pack, what did he want with me?
“I'm not on edge…” I said, still trying to choke back tears.
“My bad, but I betting it's a safe guess to make that you're just a sick of the party as I am,”
“Maybe…”
He casually sat next to me, though giving me some space, “I didn't find my mate either tonight…this should make it three years…” he lifted three of his fingers in disbelief.
“My pack members will nag my ears off when I get home,”
I let out a dry chuckle, my problem tonight was that I DID find my mate.
And then I lost him.
I don't know what I was thinking at that moment, maybe I wasn't thinking at all. I turned around and kissed the stranger whose name I didn't even know.
When did I become such a creep? I expected him to push me off but instead he held me to himself like a lifeline, when we finally parted we were both riled up.
“There's a hotel…nearby…” I said between heavy breaths but he held me with one hand pulling me up to my feet and whispered in my ears.
“Sorry, princess, but I can't wait that long…”
Chapter 2Maya's pov “Maya! Maya!! Goodness, that lazy child better not be asleep!” The handmaid's voice ripped through the peace and silence of the morning like a sharp knife…waking me from a steamy dream. Her impending footsteps finally reached my door as I scrambled to get up and open it. “ There you are! so you are still sleeping at this time?!” she barked at me planting her hands on her hips and shooting an interrogative look my way the moment the door was flung open. I rolled my sleepy eyes momentarily to the wall clock and then back. It was only 5: 00am, most of the maids were asleep now and yet I was being abruptly jerked out of my slumber. “Sorry, I just overslept…” I apologized and she shook her head mimicking my voice. “Sorry! I just overslept…it's not like this is even a permanent arrangement, I've had to take on a lot of cumbersome responsibilities because we can't afford more maids right now, all you have to do is drag your own weight and you're whining,”
Chapter 3 Maya's pov Good things never last…but I thought this would. little lingering looks, trivial touches and cautiously catching each other's eyes. All these made every tiresome day easier to get through, and at night, He'd sneak into my room for passionate nights. But eventually I got greedy. “What were you and Madeline laughing about this evening?” I said. He grunted, fishing his arm from under my head and sitting up on the bed. “Where’s this coming from?” I sat up as well. “It looked like a pretty good joke with the way both of you were cackling,” He raised an eyebrow. “You’re acting off, what does it matter what we were talking about?” I gritted my teeth, “Fine! What do I care?” I threw off my paper thin blanket, shifting to the edge of the bed with my back facing him and my legs on the cold wooden floor. “Ugh, what was I even expecting? Everybody chooses her…they always do. Why did I think you would be different?” He came over crouching in front of me.
Chapter 4Maya's pov I fiddled with my fingers, kicking my legs back and forward as I waited for her to speak, to break the uncomfortable silence that had been growing steadily since I stepped into her room and sat on the bed. “Maya, how could you do this to me?” She asked her voice painfully low, like a whisper escaping through the cracks. I tightened my fists on my lap. “He's my mate, Madeline, I did nothing wrong.” I said looking at her, she pressed her palms against her face and sighed with her full chest. “He's also mine too, I was really hoping that it wouldn't turn out this way. I've heard of this happening to twins but I was also told that it was a rarity to imagine that it would also happen to us too…” she paused again. “Maya, you should have said something…all this time I had no idea, but you knew everything an-”“He chose me,” I said, standing up to my full height and looking down at her. She looked at me, her eyes soaked with tears and pity.“Did he tell you
Chapter 5Maya's pov My heart sank deep inside my chest, my breath was heavy and the ground beneath my feet began to spin. Was this really happening? “I must be dreaming…” I whispered below my breath then looked up gulping down saliva, but the picture in front of me didn't change. My sister joined Barry with a broad smile on her face and then they kissed. Everybody cheered, the clapping soared above the sound of my sobs as I left running with tears rolling down my cheeks. As soon as I got inside my room, I threw myself on my bed, sobbing into my pillow. How could he? Didn't he say he was going to pick me? Did I do something wrong? I spun back my memories, what did I do wrong? Was I too pushy? I wondered as I finally lifted my head from the pillow. But he was always beating around the bush…I needed to tell him what I wanted because it appeared that he was fine with how secretive everything was. I wasn't though. Wasn't that the case with Madeline too? She asked him to
Chapter 6Maya's pov I heard a knock on the door and cautiously approaching it and squeezing the door handle. It was late into the night, even the headmaid wouldn't send me an errands by this time but I wouldn't put it past her anyways. “Who's there?” I asked, holding my breath. “Relax, it's just me,” The sound of Madeline's voice did everything but help me relax, even so to avoid suspicion I backed away from the door. “Come in if you want to,” “I didn't think I'd catch you awake by this time,” she said folding her hands together. “Why are you here, Madeline, to say ‘I told you so’... In that case, don't even bother I've already mentally butchered myself before you even walked into this room,” I tried it to keep my voice steady but it betrayed me stripping my feelings of inferiority from their mask. “There's no need to rub it in my face,” I said to have gesturing with my hands wide spread. “You win. You always freaking win in the end, and I'm always the loser. Are you
Chapter 7Maya's POV.‘Could this be real, or was I just dreaming?’ I thought to myself as my eyes rested on the tall, handsome figure that stood right in front of me. The air that had been filled with tension, almost to the verge of suffocation at the sight of the guards that had threatened to do the worse earlier suddenly felt light at the sight of him.The familiar hazel eyes left me in a daze for a few seconds as my mind wandered into the possibility of this entire new development being a reality or just a mind trick, I could not believe that the stranger I had a one-night stand with days ago was the Alpha of the new pack I had found myself in. I had forcefully stopped myself from harboring any thoughts about the stranger after the mating ceremony, knowing fully well that he was nothing but a stranger to me; I knew we would never cross paths, so there was no need to do that. But it seems like I was wrong, perhaps the goddess fated our path to meet again. “It's you? The guy fro
Chapter 8Maya's POV. “You are welcome to my home,” he whispered as we arrived at the enormous mansion that I had sighted from afar. I could only nod in astonishment as the size and beauty of this new environment consumed my mind, how in my mind, I was finally glad to take the ridiculous action of leaving home; at least it fetched me somewhere better. But then, I had to shorten my excitement; I don't really know what awaits me here, so it would be foolish for me to delve into celebration without being sure of what life holds for me in this new place. “Welcome, Alpha; how was the hunting?” A middle-aged woman approached us immediately. We walked into the mansion and greeted the Alpha, who I had met in the woods.“Not bad. Thank you, Marianne,” he responded with a light nod. “Take her to the visitor's quarters and tell the maids to attend to her every need. Also, get a room ready for her here in my quarters as soon as possible,” the Alpha instructed the middle-aged woman who was con
Chapter 9. Maya's POV. “Maya, you have to give that baby to me, or I will kill you and take her away!!” Barry's voice thundered from behind I was still looking around in the mist, searching for where to hide in the mysterious house. I found myself when a hand grabbed my hair and pushed me to the floor; I scrapped on the ground, clutching my baby to my chest as I tried to escape from the unknown person. I turned to see that it was Barry; he was with a sharp dagger, pointing it to my face as he tried to take the baby from me. “No, Barry, please don't do this,” I pleaded with tears as I struggled to stop him from taking the baby away from me. “He is mine, Maya. Let go off, or I will force you to do so!” He barked in rage as he forcefully took the baby away from me and stabbed me in the arm before running away with the baby. “No, no, no!!” I cried out in pain as I struggled to go after him but was too weak to stand. **********“No, no, my baby, my baby,” I cried and jolted awake,
Chapter 56: The answer could be bleakMaya's POV What could Rex mean when he said ‘out of the ordinary’, I wondered. From the little time I spent with him, I already knew he wasn't one to bluff or tell a lie. I read his expression; it was obvious that he hated Jennifer, all evident on his deep frown. “She changed him?” I asserted, widening my eyes.“No, but she almost did,” Rex replied.I took a deep breath and placed my hands on my waist. Jennifer's face filled my thoughts, she was starting to live rent free in my head. “Respectfully, I'd advise you to be careful. I went through hell the last time she was around,” He snapped both of his fingers and exhaled loudly “But You are different, way better than I thought you'd be,” His words sounded genuine, it felt like he had waited a long time to tell me that. He gave a faint smile and prepared to walk out, dusting his shirt and humming a tune.As he walked past me, I picked up his scent. I was still having a hard time controlling my
Chapter 55: The past mirrors the future.Maya's POV Rex's expression quickly changed as though flustered by the question. He gaped at me in silence and thought of his response. I was already wondering if I had overstepped my boundaries but he raised his head and put his right hand into his pockets.“Of course, I do,” What a relief! I heaved a sigh and swirled my hair, bracing up to ask the next question.“No surprise there,” I replied “I'm pretty sure she was a nice person,” Rex twisted his mouth in curiosity and blinked at me. He caught on to what I needed from him and with a snicker he replied.“Yeah, she was nice.” He paused. That was the opposite of what I was expecting “Only if you were Kylian or Mrs Castle,” he said after a long wait.“What? She wasn't nice at all to you,” He shook his head and inserted his left hand into his pocket “No, she wasn't. Why would she need to?” He asked, his tone dripping with sarcasm.“I just thought she is a little off to me. I didn't know you
Chapter 54: The line in between.Maya's POV I thought my presence in Kylian's room would be a bliss and it would leave me dreaming more of him. No, it wasn't. Each night, I had to fight the urge to not look desperate. We were always left looking awkward each time we laid. My legs would mistakenly hit his and we would usher ourselves into an uninterrupted hour of pointless apology. Sometimes, I would watch him sleep while I let my imagination take me far into wonderland. This would have continued if Jennifer wasn't such a spiteful being. My new placement made her seethe in anger. She never looked me in the eyes after our room incidence but that never meant she quitted. She made a big deal out of treatment I received for being pregnant“Who gives a shit if she's pregnant,” Jennifer complained “I was also pregnant and I wasn't laying around like an old hag,” She didn't care if I was seated there or Kylian was breezing past. She yell at the top of her voice and most times, threatened
Chapter 53: The Alpha's command.Maya's POV We all gaped at him to give his command, my heart panting for him to rule in my favour just this once.Jennifer patted Hans back and sang a lullaby. I thought her voice was parched and out of tune. She knew what she was doing and unfortunately I had nothing to play victim with.“He can't go on crying like this. Please Kylian,” Jennifer said after a long wait of singing her lullaby. It felt like using Hans wasn't working at all and she needed validation.“Alright, let's change the room,” Kylian voiced.A bomb dropped in me, detonating the instant as Kylian tucked his hands into his robe. “What the hell,” I forced out my expression. This was the first time I lashed out to a public and I quickly regretted ever speaking up. “I knew it,” Jennifer yelled back, “You'd rather see my son suffer than…”“No, I didn't mean it that way,” I interrupted knowing where she was going. If she wanted to paint me pitch black, I wasn't supposed to relax and wa
Chapter 52: A taste of biased influence.Maya's POV How could she give a compliment after threatening and reading me to filth? I felt a twitch to brace up for what was coming next. I expected it to come soon enough, that was how predictable I thought Jennifer was going to be.One chill and cozy night, I had just returned from the woods. Nobody told me setting my wolf at night to roam free, hunt and howl at the moon was relaxing and fun. My feets were wet with mud as I shifted back and stealthily walked into my room. I had a shower and ate the food Marianne left for me on my side table. She was usually aware that I left the palace but never said a word to anyone. After I had eaten to my fill, I laid on my back and waited to drown myself to sleep.“I can't with this anymore,” I heard a scream from the deeper path of the palace. With all the lights Kylian had in his home, I always refused to walk down there in fear that I would bump into Jennifer.I thought of standing up to eavesdrop
Chapter 51: Look dread in the eyes.Maya's POV Was I born only to be a second to one? Why couldn't things go my way like the others? All the months I spent, thinking my pregnancy was special. I had the son of an Alpha, maybe not Kylian's, but an Alpha's pups were literally growing in me.Why couldn't it just remain the way it was? Was it necessary for me to go through pain? I cried myself to sleep the day Jennifer walked into my life with an electrifying energy. She had not spoken to me once but I could sense she was here to push me out. Now I had to fight for attention with a professional; someone who could do it so effortlessly. “No, please. This can't be it,” I said holding myself. The image of Kylian holding her kid in his arms horrified me. I never expected a kid could become a threat to me? He had so much love in his eyes. There was a fire and determination in his eyes that I had never seen him with. His cold attitude couldn't help but melt before my very eyes. What were the
Chapter 50: Compromise or cast out!Kylian's POV “You have betrayed me. I always thought you'd have my back,” Jennifer sniffled, tearing up in regret. She had not yet looked at me straight in the eyes, yet she was encapsulated with guilt. I could read it all over the room. Not only was guilt parading it, Betrayal struck my heart. She broke all the trust I had for her as her supposed close friend broke hers with pleasure. I turned to the lady again, she had a satisfied smirk on her face as Jennifer cried. She was filled with contention as though her plans to ruin Jennifer's life took her a century to cook up. While Jennifer was about to plead her case, and Cecilia holding herself from leaping for joy, I was hopeless.Hopelessly immersed in my pain. I came here to beat the shit out of the schmuck who dared to touch my mate only to discover that she wanted to be touch. She wanted to give it to them lustfully. A piercing pain grappled my chest as she called my name.“Baby,” she paused
Chapter 49: Not for the Weak spirited Kylian's POV “A hotel,” She whispered. “A hotel,” I repeated, wondering what they were doing in a hotel. Jennifer never mentioned going to a party in a hotel. I wondered what led her there and thought to myself that they might have changed a venue or something. It still didn't sit well with me. I went into a spiral of thoughts, I couldn't bear to think that something bad happened to my mate. If only I had raised an issue with it, if I had forced myself to follow her just once in my life, then she wouldn't be in her distressed condition. With a zoom, I got to the posh hotel. This was a hotel for rich, luxurious people. A hotel known to everyone to house people who had wealth and affluence, Jennifer's niche. It wasn't no surprise that this hotel drew her attention. The lights around the hotel shone from miles away, standing out from various other building around it. The lights moved to all directions and the services there was almost divine. I
Chapter 48: The flashes in your mind Kylian's POV “Don't reject him without holding him. He's yours,” Jennifer yelled, her voice shaky as if she was about to tear up. The toddler held my arms as though gripping me with an aim to survive. He wanted me to hold him, embrace him and point at his milky teeth that he shone widely. I wanted to return him back as fast as I could but he refused to let go. He smiled sheepishly and looked to Jennifer, wondering if he it was alright to hold me.“Hans, it's alright. He's your father,” she said, causing me to flinch. I glared at her and she returned a contorted look my way. His dark locks of hair were on my skin, I could feel they were about the same texture as mine. The eyes screamed mine and his face was an incarnation of mine. I could say none of Jennifer's genes were visible on him, just mine. Denying him would be a lack of responsibility on my path. I turned my face to Maya, she was frozen staring at the little kid on my hands. She could
