When I went to bed that night, I tossed and turned for hours. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the face of the man who had kidnapped those girls. My mind had captured the image of him standing over me, preparing to strike.

It was all I could see.

I tried my hardest to glue my eyes closed, to think happy thoughts-but I couldn't. I finally sat up in the bed, feeling defeated.

Throwing back the covers, I got out of the bed and opened the bedroom door. I slowly walked downstairs, trying to stay quiet. I stood outside Luca's bedroom for a few moments, hesitating.

Taking a deep breath, I put my hand on the door knob and turned it. Once in the bedroom, I could see the outline of Luca's body sleeping in his bed.

I closed the door behind me and walked towards the bed quietly. Gingerly, I pulled back the covers and slid into the bed next to Luca.

I fought against getting closer to him.

With my head against the pillow, I took a few moments to breathe in his scent and immediately felt the anxie

I slept through the night peacefully. When I woke up, I realized why.Luca's arms were wrapped tightly around my body, one around my waist and the other around my shoulders. His chin was resting on my head, my face nuzzled into his neck.I was still for a few minutes, feeling his chest rise and fall steadily. His skin was warm under my touch as I traced the curvature of his bicep with my left hand, slowly dragging my fingertips to his chest."That tickles."His deep voice startled me and I pulled my hand away immediately. I whispered a quick apology, glad he couldn't see the blush that burned in my cheeks. We were silent for a few moments before I tried to roll over in a bid to escape Luca's embrace. He hesitated for a moment before releasing me."Couldn't sleep upstairs last night?" He asked, his voice deep.I shook my head as I stared at the ceiling, refusing to look at him."I couldn't get him out of my head," I admitted."Your dad?"I shook my head again, surprised that I hadn't t

I stared at the mug in front of me. I knew if I tried to pick it up, my shaking hands would drop it."We'll head out," Blaine said, pushing himself away from the counter."Let us know if you need anything else," Bates added, following Blaine to the front door. When the front door shut behind them, I looked at Luca to find him already staring at me.I knew what that look said. too. It was as if I knew exactly what he was thinking: You still want to go home?"He sounded crazy," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.Luca pursed his lips."Don't let him scare you.""I don't know why he would think I was hurt. I told my mom that I was okay and Mady knows I'm okay---"I stopped mid sentence."The packages," I said suddenly.I bolted from the barstool and up the staircase to the loft."Amore, wait..."Running into the bedroom, I sunk to my knees and began to open each box, dumping their contents to the floor."Security never checked these," I muttered frantically."There might be somethin

I followed-no, hid-behind Luca as we walked along the breezeway and through the side door."I look like four-day-old shit," I mumbled as we walked inside. My ratty hair was still down in tangles. I hadn't washed my face that morning and I was adorned by the all the charm and glamor of an old t-shirt and gym shorts."Very cute four-day-old shit," Luca whispered back to me.I followed him closely into the kitchen. As I peeked around Luca's shoulder, I made eye contact with awoman who looked to be in her late-forties. With bronzed skin, dark hair and green eyes just like her son, I knew immediately who she was.She smiled widely and ran over."Hi! I'm Ana, Luca's mom. It's so nice to finally meet you," she said, grabbing me.I picked up on the slight accent entwined withher voice. She pulled me into a tight hug, all of the awkward tension melting away as she did so. I returned the hug and smiled as she pulled away."I'm Carrie, it's nice to meet you too.""I'm sorry to come over unanno

As soon as we finished eating, we gathered our plates and took them back into the kitchen."Are you going to put icing on that or are we eating it raw?"Aubrey asked Norah, pointing at the cake that was cooling on the stovetop.Norah looked at Aubrey and sighed."Of course I'm putting icing on it. I had to wait until it cooled off."Norah grabbed the container of icing and began scooping it out with a spatula to spread across the top of the cake. Ana was shaking her head at their interaction when she reached out to grab my plate."Let me help," I told her, placing my plate into the soapy dishwater. She didn't protest as the two of us worked in unison to clean the dirty dishes. Philip and the twins worked behind us to clean off the countertop, putting away the bags of potato chips into the pantry and the condiments back into the fridge.I noticed Hanna walking out onto the deck and taking a seat on the swinging bed that hung outside. A few minutes later, Luca followed her out there.I

I was laying on my back, staring at the ceiling, when the sun rose the next morning. My mind still reeling, I kept replaying those intimate moments over and over in my mind. I couldn't sleep until I understood how everything had happened so quickly...How did we go from agreeing we didn't need to be around each other to me giving Luca a hand job twenty-four hours later?I was mortified. It took everything within me to get out of the bed that morning and venture downstairs. Was it going to be awkward now?You thought it was awkward before, I reminded myself. To my great displeasure, Luca was sitting at the kitchen counter when I went downstairs. He sat shirtless, facing away from me with a cup of coffee in one hand and an iPad in the other, scrolling through the news.I wanted to turn and run back up the staircase as quickly as I could. He hasn't seen me yet. Maybe he doesn't know I'm standing here, I thought."Morning," he said, still staring at the iPad.I wondered briefly if I had s

Taking a shower when we got home was a workout in and of itself. My legs were shaking and ached every time I leaned over to grab the soap.I almost fell when I reached out to grab the towel from it's hook. Groaning, I dried myself off and tucked the towel under my arms as I emerged from the bathroom into the bedroom.I was surprised to find Luca sitting on my bed, pulling the towel tighter around me as he stood up.He stumbled over his words as he laid eyes on my towel-clad body."I-um.." he started, rubbing the back of his neck, "I have some stuff that I need to get done this afternoon. I just wanted to let you know I was leaving. I probably won't be home until late."I nodded."That's fine."Luca watched my reaction slowly and I realized I may have sounded too happy to hear he was leaving.Giving me a lingering gaze, Luca backed away towards the door."I guess I'll see you later, then," he said.I nodded again, following him.Our eye contact didn't break until I had closed the door.

The soft tracing of fingertips down my arm is what pulled me from sleep the next morning. I stirred for a moment, stopping when I realized where I was asmy eyes opened to the high ceilings of Luca's bedroom.Rolling over on my side, I felt Luca's hard body fill the space behind me, spooning me. His arm wrapped around my waist and tucked itself under me."Buongiorno, amore," he whispered, his breath fanning against the nook of my shoulder.I hummed in response, closing my eyes again. He kissed the spot just under my ear. My hand reached up to find his face, gently pushing his lips away from my neck."It's too early," I muttered, still half-asleep.I heard Luca chuckle as he pulled me into him closer."I don't mind laying here until it's not," he said.I jolted up, suddenly wide awake."Oh my God, what time is it?" I said, throwing the covers back. He groaned as he rolled over to look at his phone."Quarter till eight.""Shit, shit, shit," I muttered running across the room."Do you ha

When we arrived home that evening, both Bates's Jeep and Blaine's SUV were parked in the driveway, along with an electric blue muscle car that I didn't recognize."Great," I said."Now I have to smuggle this shit in with four people watching.""Good luck," Norah wished me."Men in their late twenties can practically smell red lace. Plus, that's Ben who drove the Charger and I can promise you he knows exactly what's in that pink bag."I let out an exasperated groan as I unbuckled and got out of the car. Norah popped the trunk and I leaned in to gather my things.I put the pink bag, which was too big to be stuffed into another one, closest to my body and stacked the rest of the bags on top of it to hide it."Very inconspicuous," Norah commented sarcastically.I walked towards the house quickly and opened the front door to see all four men standing in the kitchen.Shit, was my first thought.I'll never make it to the staircase without being stopped. Just as Luca saw me, I diverted and wa

You can do this, you can do this.My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest.Sweat dripped from every pore, making my hands sweaty as they reached out for the next bar in front of me.You can do this.As my feet landed on the wooden platform, I lowered shaking arms to look at the timer on my wrist.Four and a half minutes left.Chest heaving for air, I reached out and grabbed the salmon ladder bar and shifted my body weight to thrust it into the divider above it-continuing this movement until I was four feet higher and could reach the platform above it.I pulled myself onto the platform, trying not to think about how high I was in the trees.Swallowing my fear, I grabbed the rope in front of me and swung to the next platform that was a few yards away. When I landed, I saw Luca standing on the ground a little more than a hundred feet away.'"Go! Go! Go!" He yelled enthusiastically, hands pumping in the air.I smiled."Let's go! Move it! Hurry!" Fallon screamed next to him,

Luca and I arrived back home later that evening after a long day of meetings, calls, and wellness check-ins with those who had been injured.Even though I was physically drained, it had been good to get out of the house for the first time in two weeks. It had forced me to shower and put on clean clothes that morning, something that I hadn't realized would mentally help me as much as it had. I made a promise to myself I would do those two things every morning moving forward. As we walked through the door, I noticed Luca was carrying the laptop Lincoln had brought to him earlier that day."What's that for?" I asked him.He looked down at the laptop before sighing."There's something we need to talk about and I've been avoiding it for the past few days," he admitted.I followed him into the kitchen and watched as he placed the laptop on the counter, feeling my stomach twist."What's wrong?" I asked."Nothing's wrong," he clarified."It's just heavy stuff."Luca opened the laptop and I sa

The meeting room was cold. The air conditioning was on full blast as the summer had officially begun a week prior with high temperatures virtually unknown by northwestern Montana. That room was the last place I wanted to be, but it wasn't because of the chilled air that came through the vents overhead.I could still see where the pool of blood had blemished the concrete floor where an unconscious Bates had laid two weeks earlier. It looked like someone had tried to scrub it with bleach, but a deep maroon stain was still visible.Bates sat silently in the chair beside me, Dr. Witt standing behind him sterilizing the tool she was about to use to remove the medical staples from his scalp. There were five of the small, silver staples running vertically up the back of his head where it had split into a deep gash.He stared at the table as she gently pushed his head forward."You should just feel a little tug," she warned him.He closed his eyes tight, wincing as she wiggled the first one l

The doorbell startled me awake. My arms immediately reached out to find Luca's empty side of the bed.I sat up quickly, seeing the late morning sunshine streaming into the room through the cracks in the curtains covering the window behind his bed.Hearing the murmuring of voices in the living room, I got off the bed and walked over to the ajar door to listen.I heard Luca's mother's voice as she spoke to him, her gentle tone carrying down the hallway."How is she?" Ana asked."Traumatized." Luca answered. She hummed."Poor girl," she said, her voice laced with genuine sympathy."I can't imagine what's going through her head.""Death," Luca told her."She said something last night about wanting to die. It made me so nauseous I could've puked.""After what she witnessed, I'm sure she's confused as to how she's still alive," Ana said."Just give her some time and assurance.""It worries me." he admitted."It's enough to be concerned, but trust the mourning process," she encouraged him.T

I felt a wave of relief wash over me, bringing tears to my eyes I'd thought about him frequently in the past two days. Knowing he was okay eased the heartache slightly."That's good," I whispered.Luca looked at me solemnly."It wasn't your fault," he told me, moving a hand up to my jaw to tilt it towards him.I swallowed the massive knot in the back of my throat as I felt more tears rush to my eyes, blurring my vision. Shaking my head slowly, I began to back away from him but he stepped forward, preventing me from getting too far outside his reach."This was not your fault," he repeated, his voice firmer this time.I felt my bottom lip begin to quiver as a tear rolled down my cheek."He came looking for me," I whispered."If Bates hadn't been there, he wouldn't have gotten hurt-""You don't know that," Luca said."Bates could have easily been caught in the crossfire at the gate if he weren't with you."The intensity behind his eyes made me press back into the doorframe."With everyon

The first conscious thought I remember having was in the upstairs loft.It was dark outside. The moon was hidden by storm clouds, the occasional flash of lightning illuminating the room briefly. I could hear the strong gusts of wind, the rumbling of thunder, and the sheets of rain that pounded into the roof above me.I smelt like paint and misery. The canvas I'd dedicated months to laid in front of me, it's frame mangled and bent. The once carefully detailed collage of colors making up a portrait had been smeared haphazardly with black paint that also coated my hands.Sitting with my back in a corner, knees pulled into my chest, I felt a like a shell of a human. All the emotional energy I owned had been completely spent. I had cried until I couldn't cry anymore. My throat felt like l'd swallowed acid, raw with the screaming that came alongside mourning two traumatic deaths. The only thing I had left was a broken, beating heart. And all I could do was sleep.I didn't want to be awake.

My knees gave out from under me as I fell into the tree I stood next to, leaning on it with my entire body weight. His eyes were open, lifelessly staring into the abyss above him while blood flowed freely from the corner of his mouth into the hands of his daughter who held him.I felt my bottom lip begin to quiver, a feeling washing over me that wavered between grief and shock. Mady looked down at him, tears falling uncontrollably from her eyes, rolling down her chin and neck. Her cry could be heard throughout the forest, making Luca visibly nervous as he looked around us to see who was listening."Mady, we need to get you and Carrie out of here, okay?" He said gently. She fisted her father's flannel shirt in her hands as Luca touched her shoulders, urging her to stand."You can come back to him when it's safe," Luca told her."But right now you need to leave."Mady shook her head, struggling to breathe through her convulsive sobs. I could tell Luca was growing more and more anxious,

My paws bounded out in front of me.Haunches driving into the soil and propelling me forward, I was running quicker than I ever could on two feet.I had Bates's clothes in my mouth, holding them tight against the wind that blew in my face.Thankfully, the oversized clothing hadn't ripped the first time l'd shifted, but I wasn't taking any chances the second time.I bolted through the trees, following the metallic odor of blood that wafted through the pack land. I could only hope I wasn't following the smell of my own injuries.Hearing a deep growl, I skidded to a stop, coming up a portion of the densely wooded area where a large wolf stood in my path. The dark gray wolf stared me down, the fur on his neck standing at attention.I dropped the clothing from my mouth and snarled as a warning for him to move.He stood his ground, maintaining his gaze.Snapping my teeth, I took a few quick steps forward. But his stance remained solid, still blocking the path.A vision of Bates's bloody sku

Before my lungs could fill with air to scream, he lunged at Bates and I, jumping over the table. With a quick shove, Bates pushed against my shoulders and the chair rolled backwards in just enough time to separate us before my dad tackled him to the ground. My bare feet slid across the floor as I rolled backwards, unable to gain enough traction to stop myself before the chair came to an abrupt halt as it hit the wall. The sound of shredding fabric bounced between the concrete walls as Bates shifted into his wolf.I sprinted towards the two of them, watching as my father pinned Bates to the ground with strength that surprised me seeing as Bates had shifted and my father had not.I leapt onto my father's back, arms wrapping around his neck as my weight threw him off balance and we both fell to the floor."Stop!" I screamed, holding onto him as tight as I could while he stood back to his feet.I gasped as he pulled me over his shoulder by my elbow, my arm popping as it was jerked out of
