A Date
Cadence was proud of herself. Even though the hunt the night before had completely exhausted her, she still managed to make it into the gym by 10:00, only an hour later than usual. She was surprised how deserted it looked, however, but when she walked into the room that housed her favorite treadmill, she had to do a double take. “Christian? What are you doing here?” she asked, clipping her water bottle into the holder and tossing her towel across the frame as she fastened herself to the dead man and started up.
“Well, I usually run in the middle of the night, while you’re fast asleep, but since we were up most of the night trying to figure out what the hell is going on, this is the first chance I’ve gotten.” He was on the machine two away from her, and a quick glance at his screen let her know that he had only been here about fifteen minutes.

Before Christian could say more, the door opened, and the last person on earth Cadence cared to see stepped through. “Good morning, Cadence, Christian,” Ashley said, looking more than a little out of place, and Cadence assumed that if she’d known either one of them was working out in here, she probably would’ve picked a different room. Infuriated, Cadence entered the locker room and was happy to see that she was all alone. She grabbed what she needed out of her locker and headed to turn on the shower. A few deep breaths stilled her enough so that she could stop pacing and begin to go about her usual routine. By the time she decided to contact Aaron to tell him about the gall Christian had in implying such things, she was under a warm stream of water completely lathered up from head to toe.“What’s up?” he asked, and she could tell by his tone he was entirely distracted, likely staring at a map, an updated version of the one he’d presented to the team the night before.Trying not to sound like an irrational teenager, Cadence began, “Do you know that Christian Henry is a psychopath?”Aaron chuckled. “I know that Christian Henry is a lot of things, but I’m not sure that one is exactly right. Cadence continued. “I know. I just… I didn’t really want to go to lunch with her, but I thought that I might as well do it if it could also get Christian off of my back.” He said nothing, and she knew it sounded pretty despicable, but the girl could’ve said no. Cadence arrived at the restaurant, which was really more like a fast food joint with some healthier choices on the menu, a good five minutes early, but Ashley was already there and waved at her from a booth up close to the counter. She had a broad smile on her face but looked a little nervous as well. Cadence took a drink of her soda and then asked, “So, Orlando, huh? Did you go to Disney a lot?”“Oh, yeah. All the time,” Ashley nodded. Cadence had never been, but she’d always wanted to. She noticed that most of the salad was still in the bowl and figured that was because Ashley was doing most of the talking. Cadence had forgotten to check with Cass to see if her appointment was actually at 1:00, but Cadence assumed it couldn’t be any earlier than that. However, when she walked into the building where Jamie’s operating room was located, she could see a small crowd of familiar faces outside of the room in the hallway. Brandon was pacing back and forth, a worried look interrupted only long enough to acknowledge her with a head bob. His dad was leaning against the wall on the opposite side from the operating room, and Christian had his face glued to the small window in the door.“You know, you could probably see better through Jamie’s IAC,” she mumbled as she approached. “Why didn’t anyone call me?”“She just got here,” Brandon replied quietly. “She didn’t tell any of us. Elliott didn’t seem completely convinced, but he didn’t question her further, and Cadence settled in to wait, thinking Jamie should be done soon. Brandon stared at Cassidy for a full five minutes before her eyelids began to flicker. It seemed to take a couple of more minutes after that before she was awake. Even though he trusted Jamie and was sure she was fine, it was a relief to have her conscious again. “Hey, there,” he said quietly, once she was looking up at him.“Hey,” Cassidy said, looking a little confused. “Where’s Jamie?”“Oh, he said I could do the procedure,” Brandon teased. “I took out your kidneys. Hope that’s okay.”Her pretty face looked only slightly amused as she began to sit up. He helped her by putting his arm around her shoulder, but she waved him off. Whatever it was that had been bothering her during the hunt last night, it seemed to still be a problem, and despite his best attempts to get her to talk to him about it, or anything for that matter, nothing seemed to be working.“You feel okay?”
