Chapter 2

"Hailey, it's windy outside, hurry up and wheel your sister inside....Ahh Nikolai you're here as well" Mrs George noticed that Hailey and Agnes had not come into the house. She was worried that Agnes would catch a cold after being discharged from the hospital, so she couldn't help but to come out to check on her.

But the moment she saw Nikolai Coke, she rolled her eyes at Hailey and said, "Hailey, why didn't you tell me in advance that Nikolai is coming with you?"

"Mom...I...."

Hailey was about to explain herself, but Agnes interrupted her.

"Mom, brother Nikolai is here to see me. If you keep standing at the door and blocking him, he will assume that he is not welcomed"

Mrs George snapped out of her reverie. She couldn't bother with the formality at this point, so she quickly ushered them into the house.

Hailey froze as she watched Nikolai wheel Agnes into the house. The two of them were speaking to each other in low and gentle voices. She was suddenly at a loss for words.

She smiled and said sadly, "Mom, I am feeling under the weather, I can't have dinner with you guys, I'm heading home"

Mrs George's eyes darkened a bit, "Hailey, can't you stop making a fuss?"

Hailey thought. 'making a fuss?'

Was she making a fuss?

Her eyes suddenly reddened and suddenly become teary.

"Mom, Nikolai is my husband, not Agnes's!" She was also her mother's biological daughter but yet, her mother favored Agnes while she was always pushed away like a worthless vegetable.

Mrs George looked at her, sighed and said, "Hailey, I know you're upset, but Agnes lost her ability to walk. Besides she hasn't seen Nikolai for three years, can't you take pity on her?"

"Take pity on her? Mom, who will take Pity on me then? Nikolai iß my husband, why should I let her steal him away?" Hailey bit her lip and retorted.

"Let her steal him away!" Mrs George's voice suddenly become sharp. "If it weren't for you, Nikolai and Agnes would have been married by now "

Hailey looked up at her own mother in disbelief, "Mom what are you talking about? I have been with Nikolai for a long time. If you hadn't help Agnes hide the truth, would I have to...."

"All right, all right"

Mrs George quickly interrupted her, "I don't know why you keep talking about these petty things all the time! Agnes has finally come home tonight. If you have something to say, say it after dinner. Get into the house

Before Hailey refuted, Mrs George turned and entered the house.

Hailey looked at her mother as she walked away. She bit her lips and stepped into the house anyways.

She thought, "Fine, whatever!"

It was her last visit. After these, she doesn't have to put up with them anymore.

When she walked in, she saw Agnes and Nikolai sitting close to each other on one side in the dinning while her mother and father sat across them.

They looked like couples.

Hailey thought, 'what about me then?'

She slowly walked over and sat at one end of the dinning table by herself. There wasn't even any eating utensil in front of her.

"Valeria, grab an extra bowl and chopsticks "

Agnes asked the house help to grab some eating utensils. She then looked at Hailey and said apologetically, "Big sister, you haven't been home for three years. Everyone assumed thar you won't be back this time. Don't be upset Hailey. Here, eat this. It's your favorite food, braised crap"

Agnes put a piece of fish into the bowl in front of Hailey.

Hailey looked at the fish and felt like crying, "I don't like to eat fish"

She has never liked fish. When she was a kid, her parents favoured Agnes, and Agnes favorite food was the braised crap.

To please her parents, Hailey also told them that her favourite food was fish, just like her sister so the George family could have fish for every meal every day.

However, she didn't know how to handle the fish bone. Therefore after every meal, she would hide in the bathroom and dig out every bone stuck in her throat with tears all over her face.

After all these years, she had gotten tired of putting up an act.

As she recalled her childhood memories, she realized that it was not really worth the trouble to curry favor with her parents by pleasing Agnes. It was not worth it at all.

"Agnes, some people don't deserve your kindness" Nikokai said in a flat voice. He picked up a piece of fish and put it in Agnes bowl. His voice was filled with gentleness and adoration. "I've picked out all the bones for you, dig in"

Agnes beemed with delight and said, "Brother Nikolai is so nice. Hailey, I envy you for having such a good husband....."

Nikolai looked at her and said, "Agnes, you're the only person who is worthy of my adoration "

His words were like a hand that clutch Hailey's throat and suffocated her.

Indeed, he never hid his disdain for her. Hailey, his lawful wife was not worthy of his adorations at all!

Hailey suddenly stood up and the chair fell back with a loud thud.

All eyes fell on her.

"Hailey, what is wrong with you?"

Agnes pretended to be frightened and held tightly unto Nikolai's arm. Her facial expression was fearful, but there was slyness in her eyes.

Mr and Mrs George looked at Hailey with a look of reproach and warning, "why are you standing up? Sit down and have your meal"

Meanwhile, her husband shot her a cold and grim glance, "Hailey George, don't try to start a fight!"

Hailey looked at this group of people before her. She felt like she was a pathetic buffoon and a complete joke!

She took a deep breath, held back all the tears in her eyes and growled, "Nikolai Coke if you want a divorce, come home with me now!"

"Divorce? What divorce?" Agnes panicked and quickly let go of Nikolai's arm. "Hailey I'm sorry, I just can't help but get close to brother Nikokai. Please don't get a divorce because of me..."

Hailey stared coldly at Agnes who was on tears, but also chuckled out loudly.

Did everyone take Agnes side and care for her just because she knows how to weaponize her tears?

Hailey reframed from showing her vulnerable side. The fragile expression on her face vanished. She moved her feet slowly and walked towards Nikolai.

"Nikolai, you have only one chance, I will wait for you to come home!"
