The World— A Cruel Place

Blurry vision— eyes soaked wet with tears; Travis locked his eyes on the two boys who were now shouting at him. Somewhere in the distance, Sam was smiling victoriously, taking videos and pictures of Travis as his body began to tremble.

"Hey stop it!" Jaden and Daniel synchronously blurted, getting up from their seats. The two boys just stood there and laughed their eyes out, daring Travis and his friends to do something to them.

A cacophony of murmurs began to fill the cafeteria — everyone was curious about what was to occur next, including Sam who was silently cackling evilly, unaware that he was also being watched.

"No…there are so many of them! They are looking at me!" A trembling Travis said to himself swiftly after his eyes had scanned the room. His own breath was strangling itself from his system— his lips instantly turned pale blue as he took tard steps away.

"Travis!" Someone called and he couldn't make out who. His vision had suddenly become blu

"Almost done! Just a little touch-up!" A focused Travis hissed as his slim fingers made shades of lines on a portrait he had been drawing. He carefully made a four with his legs that were nervously trembling as he traced his pencil on the portrait— afraid that he'd make a mistake. He stopped for a brief moment and went on to take a sip of orange juice. "And-d-d…done!" He expressed happily while exhaling deep breaths of relief. His eyes that were glowing with glee averted themselves from the portrait, towards a void of blackness that was decorated by birthstone-blue stars in the shapes of pentagrams. He admiringly stared at the breathtaking stars that were twinkling at him like little pulses of light. All stars were victoriously flashing and flickering like bejewelled grains of sand, allowed to sparkle in silence. Sensing as relief trailed down in the deepest parts of his system, Travis released a loud, sonorous sigh that for some reason made him throw out peals of giggles. His eye

"I don't know…he sounded like he was in distress!" An anxious Travis who was eating off his fingernails while he swung back and forth on the rocking chair, hissed with uncertainty under his breath. His eyes were sadly, yet carefully looking at the blue screen of his phone that had published David's contact details in bold letters. He was nervously whispering inaudible words while breathing heavily with eagerness that had stuffed itself in the chambers of his lungs. At this point, his heart had skipped multiple beats whilst he was squabbling with his heart, trying to reach a preferred conclusion, whether or not he should call David. His merciless brain could not help but once again, play all the unwelcoming, poisonous feelings that had punctured in the depths of his soul, last night when he had called David. Despair and curiosity have already embraced his system— instead of being thrilled, he is worried that he might have done something wrong. There was something in David's voice th

"Hey, are you okay?" Travis investigated David, a second the car had screeched to a halt. He looked apprehensively at him and with just a nod, David replied without much enthusiasm. "Hurry up! They're about to close!" Clasping Travis's hand, Arthur hissed while pulling with him to the entrance of the theatre building. David slowly walked behind them, whilst he sadly watched their closeness. His heart broke a little more, he felt like walking away— far from where his eyes couldn't witness the two become close. Getting inside the theatre, the three instantly found vacant seats and suddenly when David's heart was starting to calm down, Jiyeon appeared from nowhere and abruptly placed her hands around Travis's arm, while looking directly into his eyes. "What…? Why isn't he reacting?" David hissed silently while frowning at Arthur beside him who didn't move an inch when Jiyeon was becoming too close to Travis. "Or was I wrong? They're not…dating?" He calculated once again. "I have some

"My heart, explained!" "Is it normal to kiss a friend?" Words that sounded poisonous, stealthily escaped from Travis's lips as he glared at the blue screen of his phone, there on the internet, where he has been reading tons of replies to his question— a question he badly wanted to be replied to. He did not know why, but his heart was pounding crazily against his chest— so loud and demanding, it raced towards the depths of his throat blocking all the possible air pathways in his system. His whole body was under the embrace of a mixture of deadly emotions which he did not know how to distinguish and analyse. His eyes were awfully dilated; sweat was covering every part of his face— so wet as if someone had poured water all over it. He nervously bit his lower lip immediately after he had swallowed a huge gulp of water from the bottle which he instantly put on the table when another reply popped up. "It is absolutely not normal to be kissed by a friend unless they breathe romantic air f

[His Eyes!]TRAVIS'S POV: "Perfect! Just beautiful!" I happily exhaled one deep breath immediately when my eyes had landed on the azure sky that was decorated by beautiful, fluffy clouds that were beginning to break off their rendezvous. I felt a gummy, bright smile swiftly publish itself on my features as I walked down a lane that was decorated by beautiful verbena. Each tip of the flowers danced gracefully to the gentle breeze that had produced a beautiful song. Merriment caressed every one of my veins, before washing itself up on my system, feeding it with glee that I was discouraged to ignore. The bright sun did not dare to leave my side — it followed every movement I made and this greatly fascinated me because I felt…safe, walking under the sun. Every face I bumped into along the way was confused by a smile I wore as I walked and honestly, I understood why they were confused. Well, today was the day David and I agreed to meet for our tutoring session. The decision was hasty —

  • The Brightest Shadow: Teenage Days   His Arrival!

"Babe!" The word rang in the depths of Travis's head for the millionth time now. There, his legs began to tremble in his boots. Everything around him started to float as if he were on a ship carried away by a strong current. Out of the blue, his whole body was embraced by shivers that sent the sharpness of coldness throughout his system. Flabbergast — Horror — Confusion; or anything that anyone could think of, was imprinted on Travis's face as he watched an unknown man walk in the direction of David, gently clasping a bouquet of roses in his firm, strong hands. His face glowed as the beams of the setting sun were playfully dancing on every feature of his face. Travis's heart had almost stopped functioning properly, he wouldn't stop looking at David for at least an explanation or any different reaction from just staring at the man. David was quietly standing there, next to Travis and without saying anything, he accepted the bouquet that seemed to be heavy for his hands. "It's been

[Mr M Is Calling!] A pair of dark brown eyes, those belonging to a terrified David, hurriedly dilated, immense aghast swimming in their pupils as they slyly observed the mysterious and ominous shadows as they carelessly moved around in a house that was as big as a barn — so luxurious and fantastically built, with bright lights illuminating every space. DAVID — there, he was sitting still in the car while daring himself not to move an inch of his body. His lips had slightly parted as his heart skipped beats before hammering vehemently against the walls of his chest — there, where cold air had decided to bite into his lungs, leaving little fresh air for his system. Every muscle in his body was screaming at him to flee this instant, but he remained glued to the seat of the car, his eyes glaring at Sean who found his reaction satisfying, for he was laughing like a drain, ensuring that the waves of his voice attached themselves into David's ears. "Come on, sweetheart. Don't you dare

[DAVID CHWE — The Night!]"This…is not fair! How can I, possibly?" David, whose clothes were soaking wet from the rain, hissed from the depths of his lungs — pity floating furiously in the waves of his voice. He limped into his apartment while crying a song of misery that he couldn't see at the end of the tunnel. His heart was aching — he felt like the end of the world was just a mile away. His veins were criminally enslaved by despair and hopelessness. Not long ago, a car had almost hit him over whilst his head was dwelling in unpleasant thoughts that broke into his heart. He did not care, he wished the car should have just hit him and maybe he wouldn't have to revisit the pain that was vehemently knocking on the doors of his soul. With immense hatred and carelessness, David threw his backpack on the floor before banging his head on the door. He unceremoniously collapsed to the floor, dejected and embraced by deadly emotions that seemed to want to rip his heart off of his system.

“David is the guest. He is invited all of a sudden, but why? Mrs Park has also hired the best, well-known chef because of him. What could be why he was invited and why was I not told?” An agitated Jiyeon silently investigated. Thoughts were swirling in the back of her head, thwarting her from thinking of anything else but them. Her heart was beating heavily, not because she was scared but because she could not wait to finally set her eyes on David, whom he wished the worst had happened to him. With questions invading her head, she lost interest in Arthur and forgot that he was still around. On the other side, Arthur’s heart was jingling with delight watching Jiyeon’s reaction. He quietly ate his apple and finished it all without saying anything else to Jiyeon. Travis and Mrs Park suddenly showed up in the dining room — the maids were already done setting the table. “Oh, come on in, David. Please, don’t be afraid, make yourself at home.” David who was being walked by a guard stood s

[SOMEWHERE AROUND THE WORLD: 6 PM] Right there, in a black SUV, silence rudely lingered, making the quiet young man's heart hammer against his chest with slow, uncalculated moves. His eyes looked down at his sweaty palms, afraid to look up and meet Mr M’s threatening glance. “I see you are moving at a fast pace! That is great! Very good!” Mr M hissed as he applauded. David flinched at the deepness of his voice that casually reverberated across the car. Words hung on his uvula, refusing to come out of his mouth whilst his heart skipped a beat. Not knowing what to say, David bowed as he bit his lower lip. His eyes were still locked on his palms which were now curled into weak fists — not that he would use them on anything or anyone. “I hope you are not rushing just because you want to be debt-free.” Mr M hissed wearing a treacherous smile that instead made David swallow deep. The boy sharply raised his head and glued his eyes on Mr M. “N-no…, that is not the case. I just wa…!” “L

WARNING: HOMOPHOBIC SLURS, READ WITH CAUTION! Crickets hummed a song, slightly soothing the trembling heart of Travis that was in the creaminess of melancholy. Cracks seemed to decorate his heart as he searched for answers. The moon was shining brightly in the sky like a sparkling diamond thrown in the ocean of pulsating tiny fish. The breeze gently kissed his skin, trying to help his body cool but that was a mission impossible. His blood was wildly boiling; veins had long protruded everywhere on his sweat-drenched skin. He nervously clenched his teeth while swallowing deepily; trying to get rid of a lump that was dancing in the chambers of his throat. His dilated eyes with shock sharply darted up and down the blue screen of his phone that for some reason proved to be heavy for his sweating hand. A frown had long glued itself across his forehead, shamelessly finding a temporary home immediately when he had switched his phone on. Questions and thoughts raced in his head, making it

The air became cold. Eyes bulged with unspoken fear as they mysteriously glided over the figure of Jiyeon. The girl had tilted her head to her right, her eyes slyly following every jumpy movement that her mother made. Her smile widened just when she noticed confusion covering the red, wet face of her mother. “You bastard! How could you do that to your own mother!?” Mrs Choi hissed through her trembling lips that were now dry as a hard bone. Her mouth felt like a desert, parched and craving moisture as words played hide and seek in the back of her throat. Beads of sweat lined up across her forehead as her breath became shallow. “Oh dear, I am my mother’s daughter. One bastard gave birth to another bastard.” Jiyeon released an annoyed sigh and chuckled when she caught her mother’s lips trembling. “Did you know, father always thought that I looked nothing like him. He made sure to remind me every time we went on an ice cream date, when I was only five. It became a song and you said

Don’t force it!” The old lady assured the girl whose eyes were tightly shut; feeling ashamed to let Mrs Park see her weakness. Jiyeon bit her lower lip and silently counted to three before she could open her eyes. “It is okay. I want to go…and get them myself.” Squeezing Mrs Park’s hand with her free, uninjured hand, Jiyeon whispered soon after taking a deep breath. Mrs Park stared at the girl for a while and never said a word. She nodded at her driver and the engine of the car they were in growled as it began moving. The car roared out of the Park mansion to a destination where Mrs Park was not so sure they should go to. Jiyeon quietly watched the tall, luxurious buildings pass as the car drove by. Her heart was jingling in the embrace of her ribs, as an unidentified number of emotions collided i

  • The Brightest Shadow: Teenage Days   Claws Of Fear!

Night descended like a velvet cloak, softly enveloping the world in an inky blackness that seemed to have a texture all its own. The stars twinkled like diamonds scattered across the fabric of the sky, their gentle sparkle casting an ethereal glow over the landscape. The moon, a silver crescent, hung low on the horizon, casting long, sinuous shadows that stretched and twisted like living things. “Thank you.” David who had just come out of the taxi, said as he bowed and watched the taxi drive off. An oppressed sigh found its way out of his lips as he stood in the same spot for a while. His mind was set alight by a fountain of thoughts that made it hard for him to breathe or concentrate on anything else. “A sin? How is it a sin? And why would you find the pleasure in continuing this sin?” Travis’s words rang in the back of his head, poisoning his heart into a temporary melancholy. “Find the pleasure in continuing this sin? What does he mean? He doesn’t view this as a sin. He does n

“Come out, I am outside.” David whispered over the phone, making Travis’s heart jump, this time with fear. He flinched from the bed and rushed towards his window where he began searching for David. “Where are you? I can’t see you.” Hardly holding his breath, Travis whispered, standing on the balcony, intensely searching for his boyfriend. It was as if he had lost his mind. Travis did not notice the tall walls that prevented him from seeing the world outside the huge gates. “Fuck…!” He said silently to himself when it had finally dawned on him that he had to sneak out of the house and meet his boyfriend. His blood was running warm as his heart uncontrollably jingled in the chamber of his chest. The longing to see David had become an all-consuming force, a restless hunger that gnawed at his very soul. As he stood there, his fingers instinctively curled around the curtain, his nails digging deep into the fabric like talons grasping for an anchor. His breathing grew ragged, a slow, to

With a frown across his forehead, Travis unhurriedly opened his eyes and let out a groan. He got up and stood straight on the bed before reaching for his phone. “Nine? I’m late for breakfast!” Travis growled as he sprinted to the bathroom. He quickly washed his face, brushed his teeth, and raced downstairs when he was done. He found his grandmother and cousin, Arthur, already seated for breakfast. Jiyeon was absent from the table, something Travis quickly understood. “Sorry…for being late.” He apologised as he sat down on his chair. His grandmother only nodded, while Arthur smiled. “How did you sleep?” Arthur investigated and smiled widely as he sipped his apple juice. “Well, I…slept like a baby,” Travis replied shortly after clearing his throat. Her eyes gently fell on Jiyeon who had been nervously staring at the plaster cast around her arm. She bit her lower lip and nodded, “I am…fine.” Jiyeon replied in a voice that had dropped to a whisper. She slowly raised her head and turned her eyes to her left, where Travis was sitting. The boy had been quiet as he asked himself questions as to how Jiyeon got the big bruise on her face. The bruise decorated itself across the left side of Jiyeon’s face like a big wing of a butterfly. Travis wanted to let his eyes linger on Jiyeon’s face, but he couldn’t, he averted his eyes away from her face to his grandmother who seemed to have a lot to say. “It is late, you guys go to sleep, and we will have a talk tomorrow.” Mrs Park suggested instantly after getting up.
