Ethan and Marie carefully carried Lucy into her room. It was a dark and dimly lit room. The silence between them was thick with worry and unspoken thoughts as they laid her gently on the thin mattress. The room was void, nearly empty except for a small lamp and a pile of clothes tucked away in the corner. The air was heavy and the only source of light casting dark shadows on the walls was the rays of light that escaped through a small hole on the window.
Marie immediately hurried towards the window to open it up so that light would fill the room. Her fingers trembled as she moved to open the window, but Ethan quickly grabbed her wrist.
“No,” he said, his voice low and urgent. “We can’t risk anyone seeing me in here. It’s too dangerous.”
Marie hesitated, her eyes wide with a mix of fear as she watched Ethan hands firm on her wrist. She nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. Ethan slowly let go of his hold on her and instructed her to turn on the lamp instead. The lamp's weak glow barely pierced the darkness but it was better than nothing.
Lucy lay still, her chest rising and falling faintly. Ethan’s brow furrowed in concern as he knelt beside her. He had known Lucy for some time now since the day Leo knew her, and though she was wolfless but something about her sudden collapse didn’t sit right with him.
“What could have happened?” Ethan muttered, more to himself than to Marie. His mind raced, considering every possibility, but nothing made sense. Lucy had been fine moments ago, and now she was lying unconscious before them.
Marie, still shaken from the events, sat down on the floor beside Lucy, her own thoughts swirling with unease. “I don’t know, Ethan. She was fine earlier, just…distant. But nothing like this.”
“What do you mean, distant?” Ethan inquired, taking a brief look at Marie.
Marie shrugged and grunted as she didn't know the right way to put her words. Ethan tilted his head, still expecting her to say something.
“I'm not sure but she has been lonely with everything that has been going on with her. Leo, Isabella, the stress… I guess it's just too much for her. I don't know, it's just what I thought.” Marie concluded and felt Lucy's forehead with her palm.
“She's burning up… hope she'll be fine?” She held her hand firmly and shook her a little.
Ethan could not respond to Marie’s question as he had no idea what had happened and what might have caused her unconsciousness. Ethan glanced at Marie, noticing the way her hands fidgeted in her lap, a sign of her own inner war. He had never seen Marie so unsettled before.
Though she had not been noticing her but most of the times, had always seen her working hard but this time around she seemed lost.
“You have to give me something, Marie… you're always with her. Apart from what she had been through, did you notice any changes?” Ethan questioned, his gaze fixed on Marie.
A tense silence filled the room as Marie kept mute, trying to gather her words together. Ethan's gaze was unwavered and Marie could not bring herself to even take a brief look at him. Marie soon spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. “There’s something I need to tell you, Ethan.”
At the sound of her voice, Ethan turned his full attention to her, sensing the weight of whatever she was about to say. “What is it?”
Marie hesitated, biting her lip as she struggled to find the right words. “It’s about Lucy. About something that’s been happening lately. I noticed that when she get really angry, or upset… it’s like she's not herself anymore.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed, confusion etched across his features. “What do you mean?”
“There was a day,” she continued, her voice trembling slightly. “I got her angry and she was so angry, and it felt like she couldn’t control herself. She lashed out at me. I stood in front of her but when I looked into her eyes, they weren't hers. They looked like her….” She trailed off, unsure of how to describe it.
“Like a wolf’s?” Ethan finished for her, his voice laced with disbelief.
Marie nodded, her gaze fixed on the floor. “Yes. Exactly like a wolf’s.”
Ethan’s heart skipped a beat. This didn’t make any sense. Lucy was supposed to be wolfless—she had never shown any signs of shifting, not even once. But if what Marie was saying was true, then something had changed, something they couldn’t explain.
“Are you sure it was her eyes?” Ethan asked, trying to wrap his mind around this revelation.
Marie looked up at him, her eyes pleading for him to understand. “I know what I saw, Ethan. I know it sounds crazy, but it happened. And now, seeing Lucy like this…I can’t help but wonder if it’s connected somehow.”
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, frustration and confusion warring within him. “This is impossible,” he muttered. “Lucy’s never shown any signs of having a wolf. If she’s somehow shifting, or if her emotions are triggering something… we need to figure out what’s going on.”
Marie shivered at the thought, her mind racing with possibilities. She had always believed Lucy was wolfless, an anomaly among their kind. But if something had changed, if Lucy was starting to manifest a wolf, then everything they knew about her was wrong.
“I tried to explain what was happening to her and I suggested that her wolf might be locked away or do you think it’s because of the full moon?” Marie asked, her voice barely audible.
Ethan was about to utter some words but was interrupted when suddenly, Lucy’s lips began to move, barely parting as she murmured something incoherent.
“She’s saying something,” Marie whispered, leaning in closer, her eyes wide with fear.
Ethan frowned, straining to make out the words. “What is she trying to say?” he muttered under his breath, frustration evident in his tone.
Lucy’s voice was faint, the words slurred and barely audible, but they could hear the distress in her tone. Her breathing grew ragged, and her body trembled as if she were caught in the grip of a fevered dream. The sweat on her brow glistened in the low light, and her skin was burning up.
“She’s burning,” Marie gasped, her hand hovering over Lucy’s forehead without touching her. The heat radiating from Lucy’s skin was alarming, and a deep sense of helplessness washed over Isabella. She had never seen anything like this before.
Ethan’s mind raced, trying to think of something—anything—that might help. “Marie!” he called out, his voice steady despite the rising panic within him. “Get some water and a few clothes, quickly!”
Marie, whose mind was lost, with worry etched across her face, nodded and hurried out of the room without hesitation. Within moments, she returned with a bucket of water and a stack of clean clothes. Her hands shook slightly as she handed them to Ethan, her eyes flickering between Lucy and Ethan.
Ethan took one of the clothes and dipped it into the cool water. He wrung it out, the water dripping back into the bucket, and then gently pressed the damp cloth to Lucy’s forehead. He wiped her face, hoping the coolness would offer some relief from the heat that seemed to be consuming her.
“Come on, Lucy,” he murmured under his breath, his voice barely audible. He repeated the process, wiping away the sweat that beaded on her skin. His hands were steady, but his thoughts were chaotic, filled with worry and confusion. This wasn’t normal—whatever was happening to Lucy was beyond anything he had ever seen.
Marie watched in silence, her heart pounding in her chest.
“Will she be alright?” Marie asked quietly, her voice trembling. She had never seen Lucy like this. The first time it occurred wasn't up to this and the sight of her friend in such a state was terrifying.
Ethan didn’t answer immediately, his focus entirely on Lucy as he continued to cool her down. The room was stiflingly quiet, save for the ragged sound of Lucy’s breathing and the occasional murmur of words that made no sense. He didn’t know what was happening, but he knew that he couldn’t let anything happen to her—not while he was there as Leo trusted him with her life.
“She has to be,” Ethan finally said, though the uncertainty in his voice was unmistakable.
Lucy stirred slightly, her body twitching as if trying to fight off whatever was tormenting her in her unconscious state. Her hands clenched into fists, and a faint whimper escaped her lips.
“What’s happening to her, Ethan?” Marie asked, her voice breaking. “Why is this happening?”
“Just hold on and let her be calm,” Ethan wagged his head, his jaw clenched in frustration. “I’ll figure it out. I have to.”
As he continued to wipe Lucy’s face, he noticed that her fever wasn’t subsiding. Her skin remained hot to the touch, and the sweat kept pouring from her, soaking the mattress beneath her. Every now and then, she would mutter something—fragments of words that neither Ethan nor Isabella could understand.
Marie stood at the foot of the mattress, her hands clasped together in worry. She wanted to help, but she felt utterly useless. All she could do was watch and hope that Lucy would pull through.
Ethan knew nothing was happening at the moment and all of a sudden, he turned her head and with his fingers, he pressed against the side of her neck and at that moment, Lucy went calm all of a sudden like one who was dead.
Marie sat in tense silence, while Ethan stood and both of their eyes locked on Lucy as she lay still on the mattress. The dim light from the single lamp cast a warm glow, but it did little to alleviate the cold fear creeping into their hearts. Lucy had just calmed down after what felt like an eternity of thrashing and murmuring persistently. The sweat on her brow was a high contrast to the deathly shades of her skin. Her chest could be seen by anyone as it rose and fell with shallow breaths.Ethan, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, tried to make sense of everything. Marie's words echoed in his mind, blending with his own observations. **What did she mean?** he mused, his thoughts tangled. **Something is different about Lucy… but what?**Marie stood beside him, her fingers twisting the hem of her gown anxiously. She couldn’t shake the fear she felt seeing Lucy like this. Her friend looked so fragile, so far away, like she was lost in a place that neither of them could reach. The
Ethan’s search for Leo was growing more frantic by the minute. He’d scoured the training grounds, the inner quarters, and even some of the less frequented areas of the pack house, but there was no sign of Leo. His frustration was mounting, and the urgency in his chest tightened like a vice. **Where could he be?** Ethan thought, his mind racing. **Lucy doesn’t have much time.**As he rounded a corner, his eyes caught sight of Alpha Eric's guard, the one that was stalking Leo at the time Lucy lost consciousness of herself. a tall, imposing figure making his way toward the chamber hall. Ethan’s instincts kicked in. **Maybe Leo is with his father,** he mused. He knew how Leo was being monitored. Deciding to follow the guard, Ethan kept a safe distance, careful not to draw attention to himself. The guard led him to the entrance of Alpha Eric’s hall, and there, pacing back and forth like a caged animal, was Leo. The sight of him immediately eased some of Ethan's anxiety, but only for a mome
Isabella paced through the dimly lit corridors, her thoughts spiraling with suspicion. **Ethan's uneasiness… he’s hiding something.** His rushed movements, the way he dismissed her questions—it all felt too strange. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something significant was happening, something that involved Leo, and possibly Lucy.As she continued walking, her mind raced through different possibilities. **Could it be about Lucy? What if something has happened to her? Or maybe…** Her thoughts trailed off, uncertain yet determined to uncover the truth. She found herself standing in front of the narrow hallway that led to the room shared by Isabella and Lucy. **Why would Ethan be so nervous? Could it have something to do with them?** Driven by curiosity and following the trail where Ethan had emerged from, Isabella approached the door to Lucy's room, noticing for the first time that it was closed. Normally, it was left ajar since there was little to hide in a maid’s quarters. She re
Leo stood before his father, his posture rigid as he tried to steady his breathing. The hallway outside the chamber had felt suffocating, but now that he was standing in front of Alpha Eric, the air seemed even thicker. He could feel his father’s eyes on him, sharp and discerning, as if they could pierce right through his thoughts.“Leo,” Eric began, his voice calm but carrying the weight of authority, “you seem nervous. This isn’t like you.”Leo’s heart skipped a beat, but he quickly composed himself. **I can’t let him see through me,** he thought, forcing his expression to remain neutral. He straightened his shoulders and met his father’s gaze with as much confidence as he could muster.“I’m fine, Father,” Leo replied, his voice steady. “There’s nothing to worry about.”Eric’s eyes narrowed slightly, studying Leo’s face. The silence between them stretched for what felt like an eternity, and Leo’s mind raced. **Does he know? Is he going to ask about the other day?** The memory of his
Leo turned slowly, trying to mask the storm of thoughts that welled within him. His heart pounded in his chest, his thoughts spiraling out of control. **What now?** For a brief moment, he feared his father might have noticed something was amiss, that he might question his intentions or demand an explanation for his barely-contained rage.As Leo faced his Father, he was composed and asked his father what the matter was as he needed to prepare for the coming of Aiden. Eric smiled and nodded his head. “Yes I know… That's very good of you, Leo,” Eric said with a smile on his face and simply held out a vest, black and finely crafted. "Wear this," he instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument. "During Aiden's welcome."Leo's tension eased as he realized it was just a vest. **That’s it?** He had half-expected something far worse, a command that would put him even more on edge, but this... this he could handle. He reached out and took the vest from his father, nodding in acknowledgme
Lucy’s heart pounded in her chest as she stood amidst the dense forest, the shadows of tall trees casting long shapes across the ground. The darkness enveloped her like a shroud, the moonlight barely penetrating through the thick canopy of leaves above. She glanced down at herself and turned around on a spot to notice her surroundings but at the same moment, she gazed back at her hands as they seemed to be trembling. She soon realized she didn’t recognize her surroundings. Panic surged through her veins, thoughts racing through her mind. *Where am I? How did I get here?*The silence was almost suffocating, broken only by the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. She strained her ears, trying to catch any sound, any clue that might explain where she was. She got nothing nor heard anything but then, the silence was shattered by a low, menacing growl. It echoed through the trees, sending a shiver down her spine. She turned around and could sense that the sound was unmistakably close,
Lucy’s eyelids fluttered open, the world around her a blur of colors and shapes. For a moment, she struggled to make sense of where she was, her mind still clouded by the remnants of the dream—or was it a nightmare? She couldn’t tell. Her head throbbed like it was being hit by a hard object. Her body felt like it was weighed down by a thousand stones. She blinked rapidly, trying to focus her vision, the edges of her surroundings gradually sharpening into view. She noticed the two figures that knelt before her, their faces close, whispering her name in soft, concerned tones. It took a moment before she could get a clear vision but as her vision cleared, she finally recognized them—It was Katherine and Marie. A slight relief washed over her at the sight of them, but it was short-lived, quickly replaced by the confusion that gnawed at her mind.“Lucy… Lucy, are you alright?” Katherine’s voice was laced with worry as she gently shook Lucy’s shoulder. Marie, on the other side, was equally
Ethan stood in the doorway, his expression unreadable. His eyes were dark, filled with a storm of emotions that he kept carefully hidden behind a confident stride. He stepped into the room and shut the door gently behind him. His presence instantly commanded attention. Lucy felt a shiver run down her spine as his gaze locked onto hers, a silent exchange passing between them that sent her heart racing. The silence that settled over the room was thick and heavy, each of them lost in their own thoughts. Ethan stood near the door and took a brief look at the three women as he grappled with the implications of what Lucy had just said. The idea of Lucy needing to find her mate had struck a chord with him, but he kept his emotions tightly controlled, unwilling to let anything slip. His jaw clenched as he tried to process the weight of the situation.Ethan took a step forward and the atmosphere shifted, a tension thickening the air like a storm cloud hovering overhead. Lucy's words had just l
The tension in the air was fierce even after the fight had come to an abrupt halt. Dust from the scuffle lingered in the breeze and the faint murmur of the dispersing crowd hummed in the air. Leo's hand was still stiffened in the air as he looked up. All focus shifted to the one who had stopped the fight. Alpha Eric stepped in the training ground, his presence commanding immediate attention. Eric strode forward with long, purposeful steps, his silver edge clock billowing slightly behind him. His guards flanked him, their expressions stoic and beside him walked Ethan. Ethan has been the one to deliver the news of the escalating fight. Ethan's eyes scanned the ground, his sharp gaW noting every detail, from the guards to the pack members.Leo straightened the moment he saw his father approach, wiping the sweat from his brow as he quickly stood to his full height. Aiden, however, didn't move right away. Sitting on the dusty ground, he tilted his head slightly, spitting blood to the sid
The training ground buzzed with tension, the air thick with anticipation as Lucy hurried down the dusty path, Marie trailing close behind her. The sun hung high, casting sharp shadows over the guards and the few pack members who had gathered to witness the spectacle. Lucy's heart pounded in her chest, her feet barely touching the ground as she weaved her way through the throne of armored figures.“Excuse us,” Marie muttered, pushing past a particularly burly guard.Lucy didn't stop, her eyes scanning the clearing until she caught sight of the center. A small crowd encircled the two figures at the heart of the commotion, the tension radiating off them like waves. She stepped forward, ignoring the murmurs around her, and found a spot just close enough to get a clear view. She barely noticed the guards muttering about their presence or Marie's standing slightly behind her. Her attention was fixed entirely on the two figures in the center.Aiden stood in a composed stance, his hands clas
The question struck Lucy like a blow and she stumbled under the weight of it—not physically but emotionally. Her breath hit her and she blinked rapidly, trying to compare herself. Love Leo? The words echoed in her mind, unwelcome and painful.Lucy stared at the ground, her grip tightening on her clothes on either side. She didn't answer immediately. Her thoughts were a mess, tumbling over each other in disarray. Why is she asking me this? Why now? And what am I supposed to say? After a long, tense silence, Lucy finally spoke, her voice measured but laced with bitterness. “Leo rejected me with his own mouth,” she said, each word carefully enunciated, “and he told me to forget about him… and that's what I did exactly. Or, how can you expect me to love someone that doesn't love me, huh?”Isabella raised an eyebrow, her expression a mix of skepticism and disbelief. She gestured with one hand, a small, sharp flick of her wrist, as if physically brushing aside Lucy's words. “You didn't answ
The sudden impact threw her off balance, causing a few clumps of dung to fall from the bowl. The heavy bowl wobbled precariously and she scrambled to steady it.“Oh no!” she gasped, her heart pounding. She set the bowl down hastily, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Her gaze darted up, her breath catching in her throat as she took in the person she had bumped into.It was Aiden. He stood there, his piercing gaze fixed on her. His swift reflexes had saved him from most of the mess, but a smear of dung stained the sleeve of his dark shirt. He looked at it briefly, his expression unreadable, before his eyes shifted back to her.Lucy's fear spiked instantly, her pulse thundering in her ears. Her thoughts raced, chaotic and panicked. Why him? Of all people, why him?Aiden's eyes flicked to the bowl on the ground and back to her. His tone was calm, yet there was an undercurrent of authority. “Why are you carrying that by yourself?”His question was simple but it felt like a challenge.
The early days of the sun were faintly breaking through the cracks of the heavy curtains in Leo's room when he pushed open the door. The air inside was still, carrying the faint scent of cedarwood and smoke from the fireplace he hadn't lit in days. He exhaled heavily, shutting the door behind him and moved to the center of the room. He shrugged off his jacket, hanging it on the peg by the wall, before tugging his shirt over his head. The cool air kissed his bare skin, drawing out a soft sigh as he stretched his shoulders. His muscles ached from the night's relentless training—he’d spent hours in wolf form, rubbing and fighting to exhaust the emotions that had been clawing at him since yesterday. But the ache was nothing compared to the battle in his mind.Turning to grab a clean shirt, his eyes caught the faint rise and fall of a figure on his bed. He stilled, narrowing his eyes, his wolf instantly alert. It took only a moment for him to recognize the brown hair spilling over his pil
The words struck her like a blow. She felt her knees weaken momentarily, but she quickly steadied herself, her fingers curling into fists at her sides. How dare he? she thought, fury and disbelief tangling in her mind. He even has the audacity to call Lucy his mate right in front of me. Her composure wavered for only a moment before she regained her footing, glaring at Leo with newfound resolve. “And exactly are you planning to do that?” she shot back, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “She's a maid, Leo. She has no standing here. Why make you think you can claim her? Not when your father is here.”Leo didn't back down. If anything, her defiance only seemed to stoke the fire within him. He took another step forward, closing the distance between them. “Because I'm going to be Alpha soon,” he said, his voice low and commanding. “And when that happens, you'll see. I don't need your permission.”The determination in his voice sent a chill down Isabella's spine. She narrowed her eyes, stud
The heavy wooden door closed behind them with a low cream and Isabella found herself standing in the dim warmth of Leo's room. The space was simple yet deeply personal, an extension of its owner. The air was scented faintly with pine and leather, and the faint bluish light of the moon filtered in through the narrow window. Her eyes immediately fell on the intricate carvings etched into the walls—images of wolves mid-run, trees swaying and the crescent moon. Each one was unique, bearing the unmistakable mark of Leo's careful hand. She stepped closer to one of the larger drawings, tracing the grooves with her fingers. “You carved these yourself,” she murmured, her voice reverent.Leo, standing a few places behind her, crossed his arms over his chest and kept mute, his eyes following her movements closely.Isabella inhaled deeply, her eyes roaming the room. It had been so long since she'd last stood here. She took in the sturdy wooden bed, its frame hand-carved to match the alls, the sta
The hallways were long and the stone floors echoed with the sound of Lucy's soft footsteps as she wandered aimlessly, her mind lost in a haze of confusion and turmoil. Her thoughts kept circling back to the words Isabella had said, echoing in her head like a constant drumbeat.“Aiden's ruthless, cruel… he won't care about you. He's never cared about anyone…”Lucy's head throbbed with the weight of those words, the uncertainty about what lay ahead heavy in her chest. She could barely hold onto the fragments of her thoughts, let alone understand the difficulties that surrounded her.Her temperature had spiked again, and she felt dizzy but that was the least of her worries. She had to focus. I have to get a grip, she thought. I can't let this affect me…But before she could lose herself again, she heard her name—soft, yet urgent—calling out from behind her.“Lucy,” Marie's voice broke through the fog.Lucy didn't respond at first. She kept walking, one foot in front of the other, her min
Lucy blinked, looking up into Leo's familiar face. His eyes were sharp, but there was a flicker of concern beneath his furrowed brow.“Lucy,” he said, his tone softening. “Are you alright?”Her lips parted but no words came out. She felt his hands tightened slightly on her shoulders, anchoring her as she swayed, her gaze fixed on the ground. Her silence gnawed at him, but before he could press further, Ethan, who had been following closely behind, cleared his throat.“Leo,” he began, his voice low but insistent. “You can't be seen like this with her. Especially not by your father.”Leo tensed, nodding his head. “I know,” he replied curtly, glancing at Ethan.“Do you?” Ethan pressed, stepping closer. “Because if your father sees you—”“I said I know!” Leo snapped, his voice echoing down the corridor. He took a breath, his frustration barely contained.Ethan fell silent, his gaze flicking to Lucy, who was only staring but seemed oblivious to their exchange. He sighed. “I'm just trying t
