"Zack, you came back?" the woman rushed to hug him. "You are back home, for good, right? And you are finally going to take back your rightful place," the woman whispered the last part.
"Nice to see you too after so long, mother," Zack hugged her back. "Come on everyone, let's get back inside." Grandmother ushered everyone back in while Zack's mother let go of the hug. "Grandma, did you really make us prepare a special dinner to welcome your fugitive grandson back?" Mackenzie, the 21-year-old slender girl with blonde hair said as they all turned to go back inside. "That is no way to talk about your cousin, young woman," Grandma scolded, walking towards her family and towards the house, using her walking stick as a support. "And this fugitive son would work in the company to prove himself." "Ohhh! Brother is not going to be happy about this," Levi, the 14-year-old teenage boy with chestnut brown hair, shook his head. "What do you mean? And Zack is the oldest here. So I expect you all to show him some respect," Grandma continued, and soon, their voices faded away, leaving Zack with his mother, who held his hand in hers. "I am so glad that you are back," Marissa smiled at her son. "Now I can finally feel like I have a place here." "Mother," Zack pulled his hands away from hers. "It's been five years. Aren't you going to ask how I've been?" "You are right, it's been long. But remember that you also left on your own terms, so don't expect me to cry. I probably knew more about your life while you were away than you did," Marissa shrugged. "I'm just glad that you are back in your rightful place. The humble life doesn't suit my son at all," She ruffled his hair. "You look like you've gone through the worst, and you also smell like sh*t," Marissa wrinkled her nose up. "I can't believe Grandma was nicer about it," Zack looked up with a sigh. "Well, that old woman is dying, of course she has to be nice," Marissa linked arms with her son, pulling him towards the house. "Now let's go pull you a nice bath. Grandma prepared this dinner especially for you, so make sure to wash up well and wear really nice clothes." As they entered the house, Marissa walked with her son towards his room. "Even though the girl is a b*tch, I can't believe she didn't even bother to take care of my son," Marissa said with a pout. "But don't worry. I have put up a list with all the good girls from very nice families." "You mean well off," Zack corrected his mother as they stopped in front of his room. "Sounds the same thing to me," Marissa sang, opening the door to his room and they walked in. Zack breathed the scent of his room. It had been kept the same all through the years even though he was away. The opulent room exuded luxury and class, with lavish furnishings in different shades of gray, consisting of a king-sized bed with lush beddings, a coffee table on top of plush carpets at the center, surrounded by dark gray sofas. On the painted walls were priceless abstract paintings, posters from his hobbies and pictures from his youth. At the far end, a grand piano sat in front of a floor-to-ceiling window which offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline while the whole room was illuminated by a round chandelier. The whole room, with all the details, screamed a life of unparalleled privilege and indulgence. Some memories began to present themselves to Zack, but it was such a long time ago that he was no longer affected by them. "Go shower right now," His mother let go of him. "I will be back in a bit." With that, Marissa turned and left, leaving Zack with a silent space. He stripped off his shirt and jeans and laid them neatly on the bed before entering the bathroom, going straight for the shower and letting the hot water drizzle over his body. The reality set in. That he was now home and there was no going back. 7 minutes later, Zack turned off the shower, put on a robe and walked out of the shower mindlessly and was about to head for his walk-in closet when he noticed his mother sitting on the bed looking at something like pieces of paper. "Oh you are out," She looked up and simultaneously stood up, picking up something beside her before heading to where Zack was standing. She stood in front of him and Zack noticed the clothes she was holding. "I picked out clothes for you. Had to change your whole closet by the way. Your old clothes wouldn't fit you anyway," she handed Zack the clothes, and he looked at her skeptically. "And don't worry, I didn't go over the top. I bought you very simple clothes," she assured him. "Except the suits and tuxes. You will need those to make an impression," Marissa smiled, impressed with herself. "Thanks for thinking about me mother," Zack turned to go change into new clothes, but his mother stopped him. "Oh! And your clothes go straight to the trash. Although I was able to salvage something good out of them," Marissa raised two golden tickets to his face. "Were you planning to take some undeserving person on a date?" She quirked her eyebrows up. "Oh god!" Zack groaned, remembering what plans he had for the tickets. "Well, all hope is not lost yet. You can still make use of them. How about you take Chris with you?" Marissa suggested. "Are you sure about that?". Zack looked at her pointedly. "Well, he's been in the company longer than you have. And even if grandma favors you, it won't be the same as it was before." "So I get close to Chris, to know the hang of things?" "Bingo!" "Do you even think about me?" "Of course I do. While you are at it, you can get over your heartbreak. Have some fun and meet someone hot," Marissa winked. "Good lord," Zack let out a sigh as he left to change his clothes. "Hurry! We can't keep them waiting forever!" Marissa shouted after him. 3 minutes later, Marissa and Zack entered the dining room. Sitting at the head was grandma. On her right was uncle Elliot. Next to him was his wife Irene, then MacKenzie and Levi. On the other side, Zack sat down, followed by his mother and then 13-year-old Sawyer, Zack's younger sister. "Thank God!" Mckenzie groaned. "I thought the food was going to become stone-cold before you finally appeared." "Are you back to take over the company?" Levi asked curiously. "Don't speak like that Levi," Irene scolded him. "Your grandma is still in her prime. And she has your brother by her side to assist." "Speaking of your son, I don't see him here," Grandma spoke sternly. "I clearly told him we would have an important dinner." "Uh well, Chris said he had a very important client to attend to. You know he does everything for the good of the company. Oh! My son is out there working so hard when he can be in this warm place with his family," Irene let out a sad sigh. "How's life been, son," Uncle Elliot asked his nephew. "It's rough on either side," Zack replied. "Alright everyone," Grandma used a spoon to click her glass. Bringing everyone's attention to herself, she spoke. "Let's dig in!"Third-person POVAs Rose sat at the head of the boardroom, listening to the heads of the different departments in her company tell her the final details of the event that was about to start in two hours' time, she felt an unsettling feeling deep within her."That's good, Mr. Sunshine, well done to you and your team for a great job," Rose complimented the Chief Marketing officer as he finalized his presentation."Thank you, Miss Gabrielle," Mr. Sunshine said with a cheeky grin, a contrast to Rose's Stoic expression as he took in Rose's compliment while the rest of the people in the meeting nodded their heads in recognition of his work.Next, was the Chief technology officer, Mr. Sanders, who continued with his presentation. "... Taking all the efforts brought forward to make this day a success, I would also like to put forward an idea to make our work with our partners more efficient..." Mr. Sanders stated.Rose's curiosity piqued. "And what is that idea of yours?" Rose asked him."I s
A VIP room, adorned with a brown leather sofa between two lamp lights. In front of it is a coffee table which supports some newspapers, magazines and a mug of coffee. To the side is an open closet alongside wall-to-wall mirrors adorned with LED lights which lit the room ever so brightly, shining upon tonight's star, who was none other than Rose, who was getting her hair and makeup done by a professional stylist who had the help of two assistants."Done!" The thirty-something-year-old woman, Miss Lucy, clapped her hands while holding a powder brush as she gazed upon her masterpiece.Rose was snapped out of her thoughts as she looked at her makeup in the mirror. A layer of foundation that blended with her skin tone complimented the red tint on her lips. The skillfully drawn eyeliner asserted the gray color of her eyes and the sleek bun hairstyle made prominent her sharp but striking facial features."Done nicely, as always," Rose complimented Miss Lucy, who gleamed. "Now, I always have
Third person POVWas Rose really excited about this?Alice shook her head and chuckled as she realized what was going on, yet sighed in relief upon realizing Rose wasn't planning anything dangerous.Who knew one could get the high about eavesdropping on their employees, but then, Rose had always been peculiar about her approach to things.Alice locked her cubicle, closed the lid on the toilet and sat comfortably, listening to those that came and went. Most of the women went in to touch their makeup and do a little bit of gossip."I love your dress!""You look absolutely stunning girl!""You look in the mirror and tell that to yourself.""Did you see Vanessa's dress?" one voice said and two others laughed."Seriously. Did she wear her Halloween dress or something?" Another said, and the others laughed."Someone needs to tell her orange is not her color."Not long after, the girls went out."Does any one of you have a pad or tamp?" Someone anxiously asked her group. "I think i might be
Alice's POVOh sh*t! It's all my fault. I should have talked her out of it. But what does she mean by putting the girl in the same position as herself? Rose is currently the CEO, so doesn't that mean she would be rewarding the girl for bad behavior? But that doesn't even make sense.Snapping myself out of those thoughts that were never going to answer themselves, I decided to follow after Rose, but when I got out of the bathroom, she was already long gone.I headed towards the elevators and pressed the button. Five out of six were heading up towards the eleventh floor where the ceremony was taking place while I was waiting on the eight floor. The other elevator was on the fifth floor and seemed to be taking forever. Either many people were getting in or someone was messing with it.At this rate, I might just miss the first part of the ceremony. Did Rose get there already? Maybe I should take the stairs. I shouldn't be caught lacking on an important day like this. She can't do somethin
Third Person POVKnowing she would be there all by herself, and feeling not the need to knock, he opened the door and let himself in, closing the door softly behind him.Rose stood in front of the ceiling to floor windows, gazing down at the busy city which was shrouded in the midst of the night of the sky, yet illuminated by the the lights from the buildings and from the street lamps. On her large mahogany desk which was at least three decades old, he could see an envelope beside a letter and he knew right who the sender of that letter would be and how it always affected Rose. Her arms folded against her torso, and her hair now let down, she seemed to be loss in thoughts as she gazed through the window, barely making one thing from the other amidst the tall skyscrapers and the cars brimming at the traffic. He walked up to her, and with her back to his, he wound his arms around her waist, rested his head on her shoulder and sniffed in her scent."You did well Rose, tonight was amazing
Chris' POVI watched as Zack said goodbye to the two of us before leaving happily. What is so interesting about the envelope that made him excited? I should have taken a look at it. Knowing Zack, he isn't one to get happy so easily.Either way, it's none of my business. I've had enough entertainment for the night, so I should leave and attend to my business. As I turned to leave, a hand grabbed me by the shoulder, and I turned to find Mr. Alfred watching me with squinted eyes. All manner of familiarity and kindness that he had when speaking with Zack now gone, replaced by suspicious eyes staring down at me. It was as if he finally found the thief stealing from his pot of joy."What the...""Why is it that whenever you are around, some sort of trouble happens around Zack? Last time you were around, your customer found it convenient to spill their food right by the table just as Zack was passing by." he interrupted me before I could finish my sentence."What do you mean by that?" I shru
Chris' POV"What do you mean he is back? He just got off work earlier?""Wait, do you still hang around him knowing he is your competition? Dammit," mother gritted her teeth."Well, someone needed to show him his place from time to time. Still I can't believe he found his way back. And how did grandma forgive him so easily? How could she let him back in after he left on his own terms?" I said sitting up on the bed and mother walked over to sit beside me."She didn't just forgive him. She brought him back herself. And I think she plans to put him back to work soon."I didn't notice anything different about Zack earlier. Did he make a fool of me, knowing he would be coming back here? No he can't possibly have known. That fool is easy to read. Then grandma must have done things on her own."How could she stab me in the back like that when I've been working my ass off these past years to please her? Look at me. I'm almost thirty and I don't even have a proper girlfriend.""She knows she'
Third person POVAlice appeared in front of Rose's place dressed up a white summer dress to go with pink loafers, a pink Terry wave bucket hat and a pink purse.Without wasting time to knock, Alice input the code and entered the place, going straight to Rose's bedroom, expecting to find Rose deep in sleep only to find her sitting on her bed with one knee propped up and watching the view of the city her ceiling to floor window provided."Rose, I've been calling you on the phone. Why weren't you picking? And why do you look like your puppy died?" Alice asked, concerned."Do you think I should get a puppy?" Rose said, not bothering to turn away from the window. "Or maybe a cat? What brings you so early in the morning anyway?""I completely forgot to tell you yesterday," Alice brought out the tickets from her purse and handed them to Rose who turned to look at her for the first time since she came into the room."You going to a party?" Rose said before looking at the tickets and her eyebr
At the office, Kimberly stared into space, her eyes bloodshot and barely blinking."Excuse me. Hey. Miss Wells? Are you alright? Boss," Noah called out to her, but even her favorite title was not enough to bring her out of her thoughts, until Noah banged on her desk and she almost jumped out of her seat, startled.Kimberly blinked before looking at Noah who was looking at her, concern clearly written on his face."Are you okay boss?" Noah asked once again."Oh yeah. I'm fine. Totally. Why do you ask?" Kimberly asked, staring at him."It's just that, I have been calling out to you for some time now. You look like you haven't slept a wink for the past week," Noah commented, and true to his word, Kimberly did look a bit disheveled. She no longer looked as neat as she used to be when she first became a manager."Oh, I've just been really busy is all," Kim shrugged it off. "I'm the boss here, and we've already sent our proposal to the best company out there. I'm just hoping they respond to
The sound of clicking heels resounded through the large office as she entered, and the smell of her perfume greeted the workers. Some of them turned their heads towards her, greeting her with polite smiles.Kimberly answered back with the same energy, feeling on top of the world.Dressed in a black leather skirt and red blouse that matched her red lipstick, Kimberly swayed her head to the right, her curly brown hair moving with the same motion.Satisfied with herself, Kim went to her seat as the head of the office and sat down and soon after, some of her team members started submitting their files.Kimberly collected the files and assured them that she would look over them. After that, she called some of the members who had already submitted their files and showed them what needed to be corrected and when to resubmit the files.Having finished doing that in two hours' time, Kim went through her desk, looking for a particular file but which was nowhere to be found."It has been two wee
With John now gone, Zack finally settled down in his new, spacious and well-furnished office, with the windows overlooking the busy city. Not only were the computers and furniture latest, but the office even had a fridge containing all sorts of drinks, a coffee machine and then a snacks cabinet.Zack had just sat in his comfy chair when a knock came on the door, and he gave permission for the person to enter. The door opened and a young man walked in, seemingly in his early twenties, and he had a goofy smile on as he awkwardly walked towards Zack."And who might you be?" Zack asked the unfamiliar face."I am Nicolas Coleson and I will be your secretary slash assistant from today on," the guy introduced rather excitedly."You look too happy for someone who got assigned to work for someone like me," Zack noted."Well, even though you are a hit or miss, a college dropout like myself could never imagine I would get to the top so soon from being a mere clerk," Nick said, and Zack's mouth d
As the meeting went on, Zack listened attentively to what everyone had to say, mentally making notes. Everyone, including Chris, had a thing or two to say, and after an hour and a half, the meeting was finally concluded."Now before we go," Mrs. Vaughn brought everyone's attention to the sore topic once again. "As some of you here know, Zack once worked here, and he had such great potential, and that is why I didn't hesitate to bring him back. But the consequence of his past decision is that he only gets to start all over again. His presence here is merely formalities to introduce him back here. Some of you here have worked with him, and some of you have heard of him, I am sure. So what do you think about this old woman's decision?" Mrs. Vaughn said authoratively, although her last question made it sound like she was asking for their suggestion. The room was quiet for a second, with everyone processing her words and unsure how to attempt to answer her tricky question."How could we po
"Hello, Zack. Long time no see."Mr. Walker, a man in his early sixties, looking immaculate in his striped suit, his grey-tinged hair stylishly pushed back, walked in, then looked around at the tiny storage that was supposed to be Zack's office."As if finding you wasn't hard enough, I come to this," Mr. Walker said, looking at Zack."What do I say? Welcome to my humble office," Zack said plainly."Humble would be a compliment," Mr. Walker grimaced. "Even though you are starting from scratch, I must say that this place is kind of far-fetched. Does someone have a grudge against you or something?""Please state your business here. As you can see, I have a lot going on for me right now.""Ouch!" Mr. Walker faked offense. "Given our history, you must not be happy to see me here. But as someone who has been your mentor for years and only wishes the best for you, I must say that this is an embarrassment. But I guess you can't be lucky twice.""I doubt. You must be happy to see me like this.
Zack's POVI stood in front of the huge building, different emotions going through me.I remembered the time I came here as an intern, full of dreams and hopes and how diligently I worked, while making up my mind about the accomplishments I would strive for once I became a full-time employee. Then, of the time I came here fresh off after graduation in a suit and tie with well polished leather shoes and a briefcase. But now I stand in front of this building once again, and I am not sure what I want anymore. How has this place been after all these years? Is it right to come here at all?Chris turned to look at me with a smirk that expressed his calmness at the whole situation, making me realize that I was now the stranger here."Goodluck at the meeting Bro," Chris said with a salute before turning and sauntering into the building as if it was his home, most of the workers greeting him with a familiar smile as he passed by them, and he answered each one of them while acknowledging them.
Third-person POVZack woke up to the loud shrill of his alarm tone.Picking his phone up, he turned off the alarm before sitting up and wiping his face with his hands.Today, Monday has finally come. When Zack will be reintroduced by his grandmother to the company where he will be working in once again.Zack remembered Chris' words when he told him he was planning to resume work. Since then, they hadn't talked much, and in front of the family, the two would pretend as if everything was normal between them.Getting up from his bed, Zack went straight to the bathroom to do his morning routine, after which he brushed his teeth and took a shower.Coming out, Zack walked to his closet and came out wearing a black suit. He was about to start wearing his tie when a knock came on his door.Zack thought without a doubt that it would be his mother, but when he opened the door, he found his sister, Sawyer, instead."Sawyer, hey," Zack said awkwardly."Hi," the girl replied shyly. She was in her
"Hahaha," I found myself laughing instead saying a direct answer. It's not like I had a good answer for her anyway, at least not the answer she would like to hear. "Erin, why are you getting so emotional on such a good day?" I said squeezing her hands and Erin looked at me with a smile and so much hope in her eyes that I wanted to look away. "Come on, let's do our best today. And after work, we can go out like you wanted. My treat."Erin's smile faltered a bit but she nodded anyways. "Okay. I get to choose where we go to.""Sure. Let's get back to work," I said opening the door and we both got out together."You know what?" I said, turning to look at Erin. "I think I need to go to the bathroom real quick. Why don't you go ahead and I will catch up in a few minutes?" I said to Erin."Sure," She answered in a low tone.Without waiting another moment, I rushed in a different direction, going straight to the ladies' room. When I entered. I put the file by the sink and stared at myself thr
Kimberly's POV I gulped the rest of my coffee down, setting the cup by the side before staring at my screen in a blank manner, not sure where to start my work from. "Hey Kim," Erin called out my name and I looked up to find her standing over me with a concerned expression. "What's up with you? Everyone is happy after holiday but you look kind of cranky right now," Erin commented and I sighed. "My sister Em moved in with me, but since she is in her finals, she is being more of a leech. Taking some of my stuff and then coming back home late at night. It seems like she's in a new relationship and not concentrating on her finals which is kind of stressing me out as the older sister," I vented. "Ooh. Must have been hard. Your space is already small as it is. How's your father doing by the way?" Erin sympathized. "Well, he's seen better days," I shrugged it off as if it was nothing although it bugs me every now and then. "But what happened to your sister's boyfriend? I thought she liv
