Dinner…

Diana’s pov

Ashley, my best friend and the only stable person in my life since childhood, sat across from me at the table, her sharp green eyes narrowing as she studied me with suspicion.

We were at the store, surrounded by racks of high-end clothes, each piece more expensive than the last. Even the least expensive item cost a small fortune.

Ashley leaned forward, her voice low but firm. "Diana, what's going on? You've been acting weird all day. And since when do you shop at places like this?".

Since never! I avoided her gaze, my fingers nervously tracing the edge of the table. "I just… wanted to do something nice", I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Ashley wasn’t buying it. She crossed her arms and tilted her head, her expression a mix of concern and frustration. “Yeah, right. Something nice and you chose the most expensive store in town? Girl, be fr!”.

"I can't lose my job…", I whispered.

"I heard that already", she snapped. "What I haven't heard is how you ended up with the insane idea of buying a gift for your boss's boss's wife. What does it have to do with your job? You don't even know what she looks like. What the hell did you…”.

She stopped mid sentence, her gaze dropping to my hand. My heart skipped a beat as I realized what she was looking at–– the mysterious black diamond ring I'd been wearing.

"Is that new?" she asked.

I quickly tucked my hand under the table, but it was too late. Ashley had seen it, and there was no stopping her questions about it now.

"Diana", she said, her tone sharp. "What's going on?".

I can't tell her about the loan or the house. She'll kill me.

She warned me countless times to leave him, saying he was bad news. I still remember her angry face at the hospital, when he yelled at me for being ‘too fat’ just hours after we lost our baby. She even refused to come to the wedding.

She's kissed her fair share of frogs before finding Michael, her Prince Charming. She knew what a scumbag looked like. But I didn't listen.

"I'm just trying to impress him, that's all", I said, my voice trembling.

She leaned back in her chair, arms crossed. "Yeah right. Let's try that again. You don't even know the guy".

She was right. I don't know Aaron at all. The way Mark carried himself, I thought he owned the company.

And when I googled Aaron, the search came up almost empty. The guy's practically a ghost, except for a few award photos and the fact that he's a billionaire. And, of course, everyone loves him. No surprises there.

"Spill, Dia, or I'm leaving", she said, her tone sharp and final.

"I'm in trouble", I blurted, tears streaming down my face.

"I figured", she said, her expression hardening. "Now, spill".

And spill, I did. When I finished, she was silent.

"You did what?" Ashley screamed, her face twisted in fury. She grabbed her purse and hurled it at me. I ducked just in time, and it landed a few inches away.

"You're insane!" she shouted, her voice shaking. "How much?"

I mumbled an answer, and before I could even blink, another purse came flying at me. It narrowly missed my head and landed just a few inches away, again.

It was the $4,000 Birkin bag!

I spilled some more, and she fell silent again. I silently prayed she wouldn't send another thousand-dollar bag my way.

My phone buzzed loudly on the table, the screen lighting up with an unknown number. Who is this?

I picked up the phone and swiped to answer, my voice trembling. "Hello?"

"Diana". Aaron. I could never forget that voice–– smooth, commanding, and damn sexy.

"I take it my wife is ready for dinner tonight?" he said, his tone calm but laced with expectation.

"No, sir", I replied, my heart racing. There was a long pause on his end, and I quickly added, "I don't even know what I'm supposed to do for dinner. Or what your wife looks like, sir".

"What do you think she looks like, Diana?" he asked, his voice dropping slightly, almost teasing.

"I don't know, sir", I said, frustration building up. "I've never met her. None of your pictures even have her in them, or any woman, for that matter".

"I'm trying, sir!", I cried out. I was feeling frustrated at this point.

"Alright that's it, Diana. Let my wife know I'm done with the games. I need her at dinner tonight. She can't be late".
