Lena's mouth was partly agape at Tessa's disheveled appearance. Her usual poise and glamour were replaced by a worn-out and exhausted look, which made Lena wonder what was going on with her.
"Who the fuck are you?" Tessa's voice rang again, laced with irritation, snapping Lena out of her shock. "I...I work here." Lena managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper as she stared into Tessa's icy blue eyes, which were now more dull than it usually was on TV. Lena couldn't help but notice that the designer she was wearing was stained and roughened, like she'd had a fight with someone. 'A fellow model, maybe?' Lena thought. But Tessa didn't look like a troublemaker. Tessa's gaze lingered on Lena, and she took a step forward. "I've never seen you here before." Lena took a step back as something terrifying flashed in Tessa's eyes as she spoke. "Who let you in here?" "I...I'm new. I was sent to clean up the mess here." She took another step back as Tessa came closer. "I didn't know i-" "Lena?" The familiar male voice echoed in the room and Tessa swung around to view Thane, who they hadn't heard walk in, standing at the door. The way Tessa and Thane stared at each other made Lena feel like a child caught in between her parents' argument, as tension engulfed the room. "I knew it." Tessa finally said after what seemed like a staring competition, with Lena trembling in the corner. Thane rolled his eyes. "You knew what, Tessa." "You now employ your whores." Tessa spat. Instead, Thane turned to Lena, and after taking in her features in his maids' outfit, his Adam's apple bobbed in his throat. "Get out." He ordered Lena didn't hesitate. She was almost done with the cleaning anyway, so she picked up the equipment and fled the room then she heard the door lock behind her. On her way down the dimly lit hallway, she bumped face first into someone and almost spilled the bucket of water in her hand. "I am so sorry." She apologised in a small voice and was about to keep moving but was pulled back by a brawny arm. "Be careful next time." Dante's low but deep voice echoed in her ears. "You don't hurry around the boss's halls, alright?" Lena nodded quickly, hoping he saw her as her words were dried up in her throat. He finally let her go and, ignoring what he'd said, she hurried towards the stairs which led to her room on the first floor. "And Lena," Dante called, stopping her in her tracks. "You heard and saw nothing." ***** Lena made her way down the hall, wondering why the floor's hallway was a little darker than the rest of the house. She clutched the feathery duster in one hand and a cleaning rag in the other, remembering what she'd seen in just a few days since she'd arrived there. From Tessa's constant nagging at Thane to the way she glared at her each time she came to clean up their room. Even at that, Lena felt no atom of dislike for Tessa. Instead, she felt sorry for her as she strongly felt something was wrong somewhere. As she approached the door of Thane's study, which was the last door in the hallway, she brushed away her thoughts and tried to focus on why she'd agreed to be a maid. For the money. She got to the thick black door and raised her fist to knock in case anyone was within. But before she could do that, the door gave way, and she was faced with Bridget, who shot her an unreadable look. But that wasn't what bothered her, as just before Bridget passed by her, she noticed her eyes. They were well,...different. Or maybe it was the poor lighting in the hallway. Lena brushed it off and proceeded into the study, where she was greeted with a cloud of smoke. "Oh, I'm so sorry, sir. I didn't know you were here." Lena apologized, recognizing Thane's face in the table lamp. "I'll come back later since you're busy." She turned to go. "Get back here." He ordered in a relaxed voice and took another puff. Lena kept her head down and complied, suddenly realising that she hadn't had a conversation with him since he allowed her into his home as they'd acted like they'd never met before. He suddenly rose from his sitting position, quenched his cigarette, and walked towards a shelf of books and picked one up, which he placed on the table and opened. "Before you begin your work, I'd like to know something, Lena." He began, as flipping pages filled the silence. "Have you noticed any strange things around the house?" Lena's heart skipped a beat. 'Lots!' but why was he asking? Was she now his surveillance camera? Or was it a trick question? Her mind raced. She inspected her feet and summoned all the courage. "I...I haven't been here so long. I-" "Look at me." His calmness was terrifying. It was like he was trying to coerce her into something. Slowly, Lena rose her eyes to meet his piercing gaze. The abused, bully ex-convict face he used to have was now replaced by a cold, terrifying but hot billionaire. "You were saying?" Thane asked. "Your fiance, sir." She replied, before she could stop herself, then bit her inner cheek as if to punish herself. Thane abruptly shut the book, sending a sharp echo across the room and straight into Lena's chest. His expression darkened and his gaze intensified. "What about her?" "N...nothing." She stammered, her breathing getting a bit disturbed, but she just couldn't bring herself to stop talking. "It's just that, she doesn't...well, she doesn't seem okay." Thane lifted his chin, his jaw clenching a little. "How so?" "Don't you see what I'm talking about?" Lena asked, trying to not make it obvious that he was starting to sound dumb to her. Thane circled around the table and stood a couple of feet from her without breaking their eye contact. He held his hands behind his back. "No Lena. Enlighten me because she seems perfectly fine to me." Lena almost scoffed. "You call her looking like a ghost around the house, fine?" "You seem to feel you know her so well." Lena should have taken to the hint that this was a trap. Instead, she continued. "What I know is, as the woman you're planning to spend the rest of your life with. You should care about Miss Maddox's health a little more." "Are you trying to educate me on how to run my household?" Anger was now visible in his voice and Lena, without hesitation, withdrew into her shell. "No sir, I-" "The fact that you're my personal maid does not give you the right to speak about shit you know nothing about." "I was just-" "Who do you work for, Lena?" He asked and Lena's eyes strayed to her feet again. Suddenly, she felt his finger tuck loose strands of her black hair behind her ear, raising her face so that her eyes met his. "Who do you work for?" He asked again, his voice a bit lower but still struck fear into her. Lena shuddered at his touch but didn't dare to show that her boss's touch had just sent warm liquid into her panties. "You, sir." "Good. And that means you'll do everything I tell you, alright?" "Yes." she replied, barely above a whisper. He suddenly let go of her and turned away. "Now leave my presence.""Oh, I'm so sorry." Lena apologized to a maid she had bumped into who wore a tired face and held a large laundry basket filled with silky velvet curtains. The maid just ignored her and walked away in the direction Lena had seen others walk to.Lena continued on her way, shielding her eyes from the bright but warm sun which kissed her yellow skin. Her eyes searched the lines of bedsheets and curtains, searching for Alex, who she hadn't seen since the sun came up."Need a hand?" Lena asked as soon as she walked up to Alex, who was in the middle of putting up a large cream-colored curtain on a line."You should if you can," Alex replied, without taking her eyes off what she was doing. She had her hair packed in a messy bun purposely to keep it from disturbing her, but loose strands still fell around her eyes, making her occasionally wipe them away. With Lena's help, she was able to get the curtain on the line and straighten it so that it looked like the others which were already up. Len
Her eyes snapped open and she blinked multiple times to decipher the strange feel of the place where she lay. This wasn't her bed, neither was it her room as she could tell through the fine curtain she was staring at. She tried moving her legs to sit up, but pain shot through them, making a painful moan escape her lips. Turning her head to take in her environment, she found herself face to face with Thane, who was peacefully fast asleep. Memories of the previous night flooded her mind, and her heart sank. A sly smile slowly crept on her lips, and she reached for his face and placed her palm on his cheek. His body warmth engulfed her once more. 'If only he hadn't been drunk and knew who he had slept with,' Lena thought as her eyes lingered on his luscious lips which had sucked on hers throughout the night. Giving in to the temptation, her fingers gently caressed the side of his lips, then slid down his neck. Just as she was about to pull her hand away, Thane, with shut eyes,
"I understand." Marie said with a smile, hoping it would smoothen her boss's furrowed brows at least a little. But Thane just ignored it and went on."Make sure everything is set for tomorrow. Many people will be in attendance and so will my mom, and you know how she can be.""How could I forget?" Marie replied cheerfully, recollecting how much drama Mrs. Moneau brought whenever she was around. "Alright then, thank you Marie." he replied and turned towards the Bentley Bentayga which stood waiting, with Dante holding the door open for him. "Oh and," he turned around, back to Marie who still stood there waiting for him to leave, "Keep an eye on Lena." The woman's brows creased a little. "Is there a problem, Thane?" She asked and tilted her head, trying to read his expression, but it was just blank."Not really. Just do as I've said." With that, he dived into the car and Dante got in after him. He slammed all the doors shut and sped the car away from the premises. The usual silence whe
The entire hall seemed to be thrown into silence and the sound of the tumbling Lena filled the building till she landed on the floor with her back."Ouch!" She muttered and shut her eyes in pain as she felt like she'd severed her spinal cord. The pain spread really quickly, and she began to feel it even on her shoulders, but soon, her eyes shot open.'The briefing!'With so much effort, she scrambled to her feet and met the eyes of Tessa and the much older woman whom Tessa was speaking to."What the fuck are you doing?" Tessa's face was beet red in anger as she stared at Lena's pathetic figure trying to steady herself and suck in the pain."Good. This is exactly what we need." The other woman's voice dripped with sarcasm, but Lena didn't dare look her in the eye."I'm so sorry, ma'am." Lena apologized, suppressing a wince from the pain in her shoulders. The other woman turned to the other guests and assured them that everything was fine with a forced smile, then turned back to Lena wi
Lena quickly averted her gaze and shut her eyes as he came into view. Her heart raced so fast she feared it'll run out of her chest. And while she thought of her escape route, Thane turned in her direction and noticed her unease."Who missed me?" the voice called cheerfully, as he got to the table with his female partner. Grinning with excitement, they both slid into the seats reserved for them.Luckily, the chairs were positioned right in front of Lena, so they wouldn't be able to see her unless they made an awkward turn."Oh my god, hi! So good to finally meet you." The lady greeted Tessa cheerfully, even though Tessa only flashed her a forced smile. Lena's heart shattered, her emotions threatening to break free. 'This cannot be happening.' she told herself as she dug her fingernails into the back of her palm in an attempt to soothe herself. 'You're probably still in Thane's bed and your conscience is making you have bad dreams.' She tried convincing herself. But she couldn't shake
Lena clutched her chest and hurriedly began walking back to where she'd come. There was no way she was going to let Mira see her this way."Hey, wait, I'm lost. Could you help me find my way?" Mira inquired, with a soft tone which Lena had never heard from her before. Lena paused as if contemplating whether to help her, but then she took a couple more steps further."Hey, I'm talking to you!" Mira called again, her softness fading.Lena eventually stopped, but didn't dare turn around. With her heart pounding in her chest, she muttered. "Where are you headed?""I don't know. I was hoping I could find a bath-Lena?" Lena hadn't heard Mira walk up behind her, and it wasn't until Mira stood face to face with her that she realized she was doomed.Mira suddenly burst into an uncontrollable laughter, completely coated with mockery while holding her barely swollen belly as she half doubled over. "My baby!" She exclaimed in between more laughter while Lena stood there, staring at her like sh
Slowly, Lena moved away from the door, her heart racing as she swallowed hard. She knew that tone. He was either drunk or furious."I-I'm sorry." She apologized, staring at her feet."Lay down what you're holding and sit in the corner." 'What?' Lena's head screamed, but she complied and sat at Tessa's dresser, which was at a corner of the room. Still, she refused to look in his direction.Thane turned away, moving to pull on the clothes he had chosen for the day. Suddenly, he let the towel drop to the ground."Oh, my god!" Lena half screamed before completely turning away from him to face the mirror of the dresser, shutting her eyes for a few seconds before opening them again.Thane smirked. She was so predictable; he thought.Lena took a deep breath and quietly drummed her fingers on the table, trying to resist the urge to stare at his groin in the mirror. It was like she could still feel it inside her."Why are you doing this?" she croaked, her frustration boiling over. She'd wante
"You did what??" Alex screamed, making Lena wince a little."Shhh." Lena shushed. "The fact that I told you doesn't mean I want it broadcasted." She queried, staring back at her friend, whose eyes looked like they'd pop out of their sockets.Alex's mouth was partly agape as she stared at Lena. "Oh my god!" Alex exclaimed again, sinking into her bed, which was just beside Lena's, with a dramatic flair "How long has this been going on?""No, no," Lena quickly replied defensively. "It was a onetime thing. The day he and Tessa got into a fight and she left for about two days. He got back drunk and I guess he was confused." Lena explained, her heart beating loudly in her chest. Before now, she'd thought since their affair meant nothing to Thane, maybe she should tell the one person she'd connected to in the house, but she didn't know saying it out loud would make it so much worse. Alex leaned against her bed frame, her shocked expression suddenly turning to that of disbelief."What?" Lena
'She's carrying your child, forgive her.' Thane repeated in his head, his eyes on his phone as they rode in silence back home. Lena on the other hand kept her eyes out the window trying to steady her shaky hands which were still clutching the card Adrian had given her.'Why is he so quiet? You literally ignored him again in front of Adrian.' her mind panicked, forcing herself to focus on the passing scenery along the road.Thane shifted in his seat, his body itching to grab her by the arm and squeeze her neck while he questioned her about the reason she still had the guts to speak to Adrian.'Your child is growing inside her. Dante said-'"What's in your hand?" he blurted, ignoring the voice in his head.Lena's breath hitched, and she tightened her grip on the card. "Nothing important." She replied, the firmness of her voice surprising her."Don't-" "Did you love Tessa?" Lena swiftly interrupted, her panic boiling down a little as she changed the subject.Thane lifted his head and t
Lena turned away, focusing her eyes on the headstones again as if trying to read the names on each one. She wrapped her arms tighter around herself, avoiding Adrian's gaze."What are you doing here?" She finally spoke, her voice soft."I saw what happened between you and Thane." He answered, ignoring her question.Lena's jaw clenched. 'Son of a bitch!' she frowned, keeping her eyes on the misspelt name on a marble headstone."So? You stalk me now?" She asked, trying to mask the lingering hurt still shimmering inside her. "I shouldn't have interfered. It was none of my business.""Or maybe..." Adrian chipped in smoothly, "He just doesn't respect you or your feelings."Lena's gaze snapped to his.Adrian's eyes were dark, unreadable–just like Thane's. That was the one thing they shared, a reminder that they were blood. She turned away again, brushing her fingers against the frame of the glasses she'd taken off. "Don't say that." A brief smile appeared on Adrian's face. "You don't see it
More than half the seats in the graveyard were already filled up when the black tinted SUV pulled up in between the other luxury cars, followed by two other cars.A man stepped out from one car and opened the SUV's back door where Thane sat, while another did the same on the opposite side for Lena. Then Lena circled around to grab Thane's wheelchair.'You're not supposed to be here, you know. Fiance snatcher!' her conscience mocked once more, as she set the chair close to Thane's door, so he got on it easily.Without wasting more time, they approached the main grounds. If one looked closely at Lena's legs, one would see that they were shaking as they got closer to where the rite was performed. What made it worse was the multiple pairs of eyes which had turned and were looking straight at them.Overall, Lena was grateful she'd picked out her outfit herself-a long black netted gown with a hood to cover her hair. The main purpose was to hide her entire body. Coupled with the dark shades
"So you let her lie in your bed just to ease your conscience?" Dante's voice echoed through the large, spacious, but well- equipped gym as he moved a barbell with his foot.Thane wheeled over to the area Dante had cleared for him. And with effort accompanied by a groan, he stood up. "Fuck." He muttered and stumbled back a bit. Dante instinctively stepped forward, but Thane waved him off.Slowly, he walked over to the workout bench and slowly lowered himself on it, trying his best not to put too much pressure on his back."I feel like a fucking vegetable." He said, steadying himself on the bench and yanking off his upper clothes so he was shirtless."You okay?" Dante asked, watching Thane closely. A bead of sweat rolled down the side of his face and soaked his black tank top, indicating he was previously working out."Hand me the dumbbell." Thane ordered, ignoring Dante's little attempt to be caring. Dante passed it over with ease, but as Thane took it, a strained grunt escaped his lip
The silence between both men was thick with curiosity, malice and resentment, as they busied themselves with their thoughts in Thane's yard.Adrian, standing, gripped a glass of wine in his hands as his eyes shifted from left to right, scanning the area for nothing in particular, lost in his head.Thane on the other hand sat in his wheelchair thinking of how wonderful it'll feel having a mini him running around in a tiny suit and tie ready to learn all what he was going to teach him.'It might not be that bad after all. All you need to do is literally get off your ass and take charge of that little girl who's going to be your wife.'"What's your plan, Thane?" Adrian suddenly broke the silence, his voice calm, but there was a clear edge to his tone.Thane didn't respond immediately, as if searching for the right words to say, but deep down, he could feel Adrian's tension.Only a fool would not see that Adrian still wanted Lena, and Thane was planning to make it hard for him-or kill him
With the corner of her eye, Lena stole glances at Thane as he typed away on the screen in front of him, while she laid the duvet smoothly over his bed.Apparently, she still did chores around his room, only that there were now extra jobs, and she did them all while wearing fancy outfits Cecil had gotten her. "What is that?" Thane suddenly said, jolting Lena out of her thoughts as she turned to him. "What?" She asked quietly, standing straight with her hands clasped in front of her.Thane just raised an eyebrow at her and pointed to his other ear, which was out of her view, indicating he was on a call. "Oh." she mumbled before letting her eyes search the large, sparkling room for something else she could do."Did you find them?" Thane's voice came again. "Good, now put them on the next flight to Canada." He said and paused again. "His wife, a good job, and the kids, good schools, understood?" It's been days since the entire drama about her pregnancy, but all Thane had made her feel
"Why do we have to go to your cousin's house?" Mira groaned for like the hundredth time that morning, holding a scowl on her pretty face.Adrian ignored her, pretending to be very focused on massaging her leg that rested on his lap, as the car cruised smoothly along the highway. He really didn't want to answer her questions as they always went through this argument circle over and over each time he brought up Thane. But he was patient. After all, she was pregnant.Mira, annoyed by his silence, frowned when she got no reply from him. Suddenly, she leaned forward and nudged him on his shoulder. "Answer me!" She demanded, her voice raising slightly. Finally, Adrian turned to her, a look of partial exhaustion written all over his face. "He just got out of the hospital, Mira. It's only human to go see him." He explained softly before returning to massaging her leg."Besides, you didn't let me spend some time with him the last time we went visiting."Mira's frown morphed into a mixture of d
The drive back to the house seemed longer than when they'd come, but that wasn't what bothered Lena as the woman's voice from child protection rang in her ears."What do you mean?" Cecil had asked with a deep frown."It says he died twenty-two hours after he was brought in because of the way he was born, and some other complications." Lena felt a sharp pain in her chest, like a physical blow, and she almost physically felt blood shoot up to her throat.'It's not possible!' her mind screamed as she unconsciously stumbled backwards, her knees almost giving out."Please, check again." Lena said, trying to get a grip on herself and convincing herself that the lady had gone mad. "It can't be my Aaron." The woman just stared straight into Lena's eyes and shook her head, her eyes filled with sympathy. "I'm sorry, ma'am." She said quietly."Are you sure of what you're saying?" Cecil asked, but the woman nodded, confirming what she'd just said. Lena turned away, her sight beginning to blur,
A heavy silence filled the air as Lena stared at Cecil, searching for a reaction or any form of emotion to what she'd just confessed. But she got nothing from Cecil, whose expression remained unchanged for a few more seconds. But finally, she crossed her legs, a small frown forming on her brows. "What do you mean?" she asked calmly.Lena bit her lips and looked away, silently begging the tears pooling beneath her eyes not to fall. This was the first time she was speaking about it and she never thought the memory would hurt this much. She tugged carelessly at her fingers, searching for the words to begin and surprisingly, Cecil was patient enough, giving her enough time she needed."The day I found out I was pregnant was the day Adrian was supposed to go to jail." She began, her voice trembling as she remembered the pleading look on Adrian's face when the police stormed into their house. "I'd just gotten back from the hospital and the test results were in my hands." She continued shak
