The entire hall seemed to be thrown into silence and the sound of the tumbling Lena filled the building till she landed on the floor with her back.
"Ouch!" She muttered and shut her eyes in pain as she felt like she'd severed her spinal cord. The pain spread really quickly, and she began to feel it even on her shoulders, but soon, her eyes shot open. 'The briefing!' With so much effort, she scrambled to her feet and met the eyes of Tessa and the much older woman whom Tessa was speaking to. "What the fuck are you doing?" Tessa's face was beet red in anger as she stared at Lena's pathetic figure trying to steady herself and suck in the pain. "Good. This is exactly what we need." The other woman's voice dripped with sarcasm, but Lena didn't dare look her in the eye. "I'm so sorry, ma'am." Lena apologized, suppressing a wince from the pain in her shoulders. The other woman turned to the other guests and assured them that everything was fine with a forced smile, then turned back to Lena with irritation. When they were sure everyone had gone back to their business, Tessa took a step towards Lena with blazing eyes. "What are you trying to do? Are you trying to ruin this thing for me?" Lena's eye stung with tears, but she kept her head down. Tessa didn't even care if she was hurt. "Of course not. I'll never do that." She replied with quivering lips. "Then what would you-" "That's alright now Tessa." The woman stopped Tessa eyeing Lena as she gently pulled Tessa to her side. "But Cecil she-" "No need to be worked up over some clumsy maid. Today marks the true beginning of your life with my son." 'Her son?' Lena slowly raised her eyes and took a quick glance at the woman. She bore a striking resemblance to Thane. Her hair was dark, shiny and just the right length for a woman her age. Her brows were icily arched; similar to that of a wicked stepmother, and her eyes had a darker glow than Thane's. Or was it the lighting in the room? Lena wasn't sure. "Also, you have a speech to give. Don't overwork your voice, my dear." Cecil added, and Tessa couldn't help but take a deep breath and smile. "You're right Cecil. I won't let her ruin my day. She'll leave soon, anyway." Tessa replied with a smirk of pride. Lena's heart sank along with all the admiration she had for Tessa and a sudden feeling of anger washed over her. She raised her dampened eyes to be sure Tessa was joking, instead she sighted Marie coming their way. "What happened, Lena?" Marie called and gently held her by the arm, then turned to Tessa and Cecil. "I am so sorry about that, Mrs. Moneau. I promise it won't happen again." "Oh, no worries." Cecil said as she waved her rings adorned hand dismissively. "Just get her in check for the rest of the time she has left. We don't want careless maids spilling drinks over our prominent guests." She added and began walking away with Tessa. "Now, about our initial discussion." Lena heard Cecil as they walked away. "Your career doesn't stop from carrying my son's child, you know..." "What is wrong with you?" Marie scolded, snapping Lena out of her eavesdropping. "Do you want to get yourself fired?" She asked with the scariest scowl Lena had ever seen and it moved her half to tears. "You're such a promising young lady and you got everything so right when you first arrived. What went wrong?" Though Lena knew Marie was scolding her, she couldn't help but feel the motherly love hovering around her words, and it made Lena wonder if she had a child. "I am so sorry. I was in such a hurry and I tripped-" "No, stop that." Marie interrupted. "You should know by now that no one in this household tolerates excuses. Especially during these important times." Marie suddenly looked around as if searching for someone. "Thane has you under surveillance, you know." She said in a whisper. "Another wrong move and you're gone!" 'Really? That's how petty he is?' Lena thought and almost rolled her eyeballs. 'He is so damn selfish.' "I don't know what you did to him, but you need to be extra careful, especially now that Cecil will be around most of the time." Marie added and began leading Lena towards the kitchen while flashing smiles at anyone they passed by. Lena didn't know how everything had come to this, but she knew she didn't want to lose this job. She needed it! ***** "Do we really have to wait for him? What if he doesn't show up?" Lena saw Tessa whisper to Cecil with a frown. They were all seated around a large dining table which contained only empty plates and a glass of wine in front of each person. Every seat at the table was occupied except for two in front of Lena, which sat cold. "Patience Tessa, he will. You should know we make family our priority, and this is a family occasion." Cecil half scolded. "We're going to make sure everyone is complete before we begin." Tessa just rolled her eyes and turned to her phone. Her perfectly manicured fingers caressed the screen as she scrolled away. Lena let her eyes stray to the head of the table, where Thane sat. 'Why does he hate me so much but still let me clean his room?' Her eyes caught sight of his large breast tattoo peeking from beneath his shirt as his grey-blue eyes darted from one face to another, with Dante occasionally whispering something into his ear. His fingers strayed to his chin, and he stroked it in thought while Lena stopped herself from having wild imaginations. 'You're such a whore, you know that, right?' her mind scolded. 'I thought you were over him hours ago?' 'It's not that easy!' Lena argued back, her eyes still lingering on Thane's face, but then drifted to his lips. 'How could anyone get over someone like-' He suddenly turned in her direction and Lena quickly looked away, but she knew it was too late. He'd already seen her. Anyway, when she looked back up, his eyes weren't on her anymore, as he was back to his makeshift gossip with Dante. She finally released her breath, which she hadn't noticed she was holding. Then a loud, cheerful voice called as they walked through the main door of the house. "Hey, everybody!" Everyone's head snapped in the direction except Thane, but including Lena. She knew that voice even if she lost her memory. As the person slowly came into view, Lena's heart sank painfully, and she silently prayed for death.Lena quickly averted her gaze and shut her eyes as he came into view. Her heart raced so fast she feared it'll run out of her chest. And while she thought of her escape route, Thane turned in her direction and noticed her unease."Who missed me?" the voice called cheerfully, as he got to the table with his female partner. Grinning with excitement, they both slid into the seats reserved for them.Luckily, the chairs were positioned right in front of Lena, so they wouldn't be able to see her unless they made an awkward turn."Oh my god, hi! So good to finally meet you." The lady greeted Tessa cheerfully, even though Tessa only flashed her a forced smile. Lena's heart shattered, her emotions threatening to break free. 'This cannot be happening.' she told herself as she dug her fingernails into the back of her palm in an attempt to soothe herself. 'You're probably still in Thane's bed and your conscience is making you have bad dreams.' She tried convincing herself. But she couldn't shake
Lena clutched her chest and hurriedly began walking back to where she'd come. There was no way she was going to let Mira see her this way."Hey, wait, I'm lost. Could you help me find my way?" Mira inquired, with a soft tone which Lena had never heard from her before. Lena paused as if contemplating whether to help her, but then she took a couple more steps further."Hey, I'm talking to you!" Mira called again, her softness fading.Lena eventually stopped, but didn't dare turn around. With her heart pounding in her chest, she muttered. "Where are you headed?""I don't know. I was hoping I could find a bath-Lena?" Lena hadn't heard Mira walk up behind her, and it wasn't until Mira stood face to face with her that she realized she was doomed.Mira suddenly burst into an uncontrollable laughter, completely coated with mockery while holding her barely swollen belly as she half doubled over. "My baby!" She exclaimed in between more laughter while Lena stood there, staring at her like sh
Slowly, Lena moved away from the door, her heart racing as she swallowed hard. She knew that tone. He was either drunk or furious."I-I'm sorry." She apologized, staring at her feet."Lay down what you're holding and sit in the corner." 'What?' Lena's head screamed, but she complied and sat at Tessa's dresser, which was at a corner of the room. Still, she refused to look in his direction.Thane turned away, moving to pull on the clothes he had chosen for the day. Suddenly, he let the towel drop to the ground."Oh, my god!" Lena half screamed before completely turning away from him to face the mirror of the dresser, shutting her eyes for a few seconds before opening them again.Thane smirked. She was so predictable; he thought.Lena took a deep breath and quietly drummed her fingers on the table, trying to resist the urge to stare at his groin in the mirror. It was like she could still feel it inside her."Why are you doing this?" she croaked, her frustration boiling over. She'd wante
"You did what??" Alex screamed, making Lena wince a little."Shhh." Lena shushed. "The fact that I told you doesn't mean I want it broadcasted." She queried, staring back at her friend, whose eyes looked like they'd pop out of their sockets.Alex's mouth was partly agape as she stared at Lena. "Oh my god!" Alex exclaimed again, sinking into her bed, which was just beside Lena's, with a dramatic flair "How long has this been going on?""No, no," Lena quickly replied defensively. "It was a onetime thing. The day he and Tessa got into a fight and she left for about two days. He got back drunk and I guess he was confused." Lena explained, her heart beating loudly in her chest. Before now, she'd thought since their affair meant nothing to Thane, maybe she should tell the one person she'd connected to in the house, but she didn't know saying it out loud would make it so much worse. Alex leaned against her bed frame, her shocked expression suddenly turning to that of disbelief."What?" Lena
"I met him first in prison." Lena's voice broke the silence, and she stared at her friend, gauging her reaction. Alex blinked, with a blank expression on her face. But after a while, she raised an eyebrow and said in a casual tone "And?" but when Lena didn't respond and her curiosity turned to frustration. "He released you from prison and what?"Lena shook her head, her lips pressed into a thin line "No, he didn't release me from prison, he was in prison with me." The air in the room stilled for a few seconds until Alex blinked again and let out a sharp laugh. "Good one, Lena. Very funny. Now please quit stalling and be serious." "I am serious," Lena said firmly, her frown deepening as Alex's lightheartedness began to irritate her.Alex stopped for a while and tilted her head, trying to read her expression, but found no atom of humor. She scoffed. "You're joking, right?" Lena didn't flinch. Alex got serious "So you're trying to tell me that you met our boss, Thane Moneau in priso
"How about this?" Tessa asked, turning her phone's screen so close to Thane's face that he winced a little from its brightness."It's pretty." He replied dryly, then got back to tapping on his own phone.Lena, who'd been silently doing her chores in the room, couldn't help but notice how uninterested Thane sounded since Tessa began scrolling through her wedding gown options for her dress fitting in a couple of days. He probably would have walked out of the room if Tessa hadn't settled herself on his lap, straddling him with her legs on either side, and facing him directly. Lena thought. But who was she to judge? They were getting married in about a week, whether or not they truly loved each other, and Thane had made it clear that Lena was just some rag he'd had a "fling" with. Now here she was, with no choice but to witness their hypocrisy as she dusted the shelf in their room, filled with artifacts and books she could swear had never been opened before. With complete focus, she did
"Sir, you have a visitor." Thane's jaw tightened in anger, both from the interruption and the defiant way Lena held his gaze. If he was being honest, her aura felt bold-too bold and a bit intimidating, and he didn't like it. Still, Lena's arms remained folded across her chest, not in defiance but to hide the fact that her body was slightly trembling. Deep down, she was terrified, and she had no idea what she was doing, but she refused to show it."Get out!" Thane barked at the intruder, turning to the door and making a shiver run down Lena's spine. 'Oh, now you're fucked!' Lena's thoughts hissed as the footsteps of the intruder faded down the hall. When it was just them once more, Thane turned his gaze back to her. The intensity of his gaze made her feel so small. "Who do you think you are, Lena?" He asked, his eyes burning with something she could no longer decipher. She didn't reply, as she pressed her lips together, forcing herself to maintain a mask of indifference."Answer me
"I see you're rebelling against your boss," Adrian said, his voice tinged with mockery as he leaned casually against a garden bench, where Lena had suggested they stayed and talked. He had a sly smirk on his lips and his sharp eyes raked over Lena, who still caught his interest even in her plain maid's uniform."I'd suggest you mock me quickly, and be on your way," Lena replied curtly, her earlier smile now replaced by a hardened expression. "I promise you, this is not worth your time.""But it is worth defying your boss's orders?" Adrian teased, his eyes keenly studying her.Lena raised her chin to meet his gaze, trying to gauge his intentions, but she could only read the familiar smirk he usually wore.A chill breeze swept through the garden, sending shivers down her spine, ruffling Adrian's golden hair, which she used to run her hands through when he'd fallen asleep while they watched a movie. 'Stop it,' she scolded herself as goosebumps traced their way to her brain. She turned
"So you let her lie in your bed just to ease your conscience?" Dante's voice echoed through the large, spacious, but well- equipped gym as he moved a barbell with his foot.Thane wheeled over to the area Dante had cleared for him. And with effort accompanied by a groan, he stood up. "Fuck." He muttered and stumbled back a bit. Dante instinctively stepped forward, but Thane waved him off.Slowly, he walked over to the workout bench and slowly lowered himself on it, trying his best not to put too much pressure on his back."I feel like a fucking vegetable." He said, steadying himself on the bench and yanking off his upper clothes so he was shirtless."You okay?" Dante asked, watching Thane closely. A bead of sweat rolled down the side of his face and soaked his black tank top, indicating he was previously working out."Hand me the dumbbell." Thane ordered, ignoring Dante's little attempt to be caring. Dante passed it over with ease, but as Thane took it, a strained grunt escaped his lip
The silence between both men was thick with curiosity, malice and resentment, as they busied themselves with their thoughts in Thane's yard.Adrian, standing, gripped a glass of wine in his hands as his eyes shifted from left to right, scanning the area for nothing in particular, lost in his head.Thane on the other hand sat in his wheelchair thinking of how wonderful it'll feel having a mini him running around in a tiny suit and tie ready to learn all what he was going to teach him.'It might not be that bad after all. All you need to do is literally get off your ass and take charge of that little girl who's going to be your wife.'"What's your plan, Thane?" Adrian suddenly broke the silence, his voice calm, but there was a clear edge to his tone.Thane didn't respond immediately, as if searching for the right words to say, but deep down, he could feel Adrian's tension.Only a fool would not see that Adrian still wanted Lena, and Thane was planning to make it hard for him-or kill him
With the corner of her eye, Lena stole glances at Thane as he typed away on the screen in front of him, while she laid the duvet smoothly over his bed.Apparently, she still did chores around his room, only that there were now extra jobs, and she did them all while wearing fancy outfits Cecil had gotten her. "What is that?" Thane suddenly said, jolting Lena out of her thoughts as she turned to him. "What?" She asked quietly, standing straight with her hands clasped in front of her.Thane just raised an eyebrow at her and pointed to his other ear, which was out of her view, indicating he was on a call. "Oh." she mumbled before letting her eyes search the large, sparkling room for something else she could do."Did you find them?" Thane's voice came again. "Good, now put them on the next flight to Canada." He said and paused again. "His wife, a good job, and the kids, good schools, understood?" It's been days since the entire drama about her pregnancy, but all Thane had made her feel
"Why do we have to go to your cousin's house?" Mira groaned for like the hundredth time that morning, holding a scowl on her pretty face.Adrian ignored her, pretending to be very focused on massaging her leg that rested on his lap, as the car cruised smoothly along the highway. He really didn't want to answer her questions as they always went through this argument circle over and over each time he brought up Thane. But he was patient. After all, she was pregnant.Mira, annoyed by his silence, frowned when she got no reply from him. Suddenly, she leaned forward and nudged him on his shoulder. "Answer me!" She demanded, her voice raising slightly. Finally, Adrian turned to her, a look of partial exhaustion written all over his face. "He just got out of the hospital, Mira. It's only human to go see him." He explained softly before returning to massaging her leg."Besides, you didn't let me spend some time with him the last time we went visiting."Mira's frown morphed into a mixture of d
The drive back to the house seemed longer than when they'd come, but that wasn't what bothered Lena as the woman's voice from child protection rang in her ears."What do you mean?" Cecil had asked with a deep frown."It says he died twenty-two hours after he was brought in because of the way he was born, and some other complications." Lena felt a sharp pain in her chest, like a physical blow, and she almost physically felt blood shoot up to her throat.'It's not possible!' her mind screamed as she unconsciously stumbled backwards, her knees almost giving out."Please, check again." Lena said, trying to get a grip on herself and convincing herself that the lady had gone mad. "It can't be my Aaron." The woman just stared straight into Lena's eyes and shook her head, her eyes filled with sympathy. "I'm sorry, ma'am." She said quietly."Are you sure of what you're saying?" Cecil asked, but the woman nodded, confirming what she'd just said. Lena turned away, her sight beginning to blur,
A heavy silence filled the air as Lena stared at Cecil, searching for a reaction or any form of emotion to what she'd just confessed. But she got nothing from Cecil, whose expression remained unchanged for a few more seconds. But finally, she crossed her legs, a small frown forming on her brows. "What do you mean?" she asked calmly.Lena bit her lips and looked away, silently begging the tears pooling beneath her eyes not to fall. This was the first time she was speaking about it and she never thought the memory would hurt this much. She tugged carelessly at her fingers, searching for the words to begin and surprisingly, Cecil was patient enough, giving her enough time she needed."The day I found out I was pregnant was the day Adrian was supposed to go to jail." She began, her voice trembling as she remembered the pleading look on Adrian's face when the police stormed into their house. "I'd just gotten back from the hospital and the test results were in my hands." She continued shak
As soon as Lena stepped into the room, the door clicked shut behind her. She stood a few feet away from Thane, staring at her feet while nervously tugging at her fingers. "Yoqu wanted to see me?" she asked softly, her voice barely audible.Thane turned his wheelchair to face her fully. His dark eyes scanned her features, as if trying to find the tiniest quality that could make him believe she was worth keeping around-worth marrying. But he got nothing. She was still that unsure, clumsy, little girl who'd once thought she could defy him and get away with it.'I'll never let you go,' his mind hissed.Thane's eyes dropped from her head to her stomach. It was still quite flat, but the harder he looked, the more he saw a little bulge begin to form.'My child is in there?' he thought, but soon enough, Lena shifted on one foot and he realized he was keeping two people standing. "Have a seat." He finally said.Lena hesitated and raised her head slowly to be sure he was talking to her. She th
"You're what?!" Alex yelled in horror, but Lena didn't try to shut her up this time as she silently prayed Alex would yell loud enough so the child would just disappear, maybe. "Tell me you're joking, Lena." She said, sitting beside Lena on the bed. Lena just hugged her knees and buried her head between her legs. "I wish." She mumbled, accompanied by a faint moan. "I don't want to keep it." Concern flashed across Alex's face, and she placed a hand on her shoulder. "Hey don't talk like that, alright? Besides, his mom already accepted it." "His mom wants it, but he doesn't, Alex. He hates me!" She wailed. Alex patted her head gently. "Hey, we don't know that," she said, but it only made Lena raise her head and glare at her. "Really? Have you seen the way he treats me?" 'How would she know? You refused to tell her that her boss has a BDSM chamber in this house.' Lena groaned and buried her head back between her legs. "I should have gotten rid of it the moment I noticed."
Lena's heart skipped a beat, and a sharp pain shot through her stomach as if the fear she felt had spread. For a few seconds, silence filled the room, and a dampness hung in the air as Lena and Dr. Hailey stared at Cecil, whose sharp eyes were fixed on Lena.'Now, you're really in trouble''She's going to have your head!''How long has she been there?' Lena's head was a mess as every word she thought to say was caught in her throat. "G-good day, ma'am."Dr. Hailey greeted with an uneasy grin on her face.Cecil stepped into the room, her expression unreadable. She wasn't smiling. "Is that true?" She asked again, her voice calm but demanding.Lena's legs felt like they were about the give out and she gripped the bed for some kind of comfort. "I-is what true?" She asked, her lips quivering. Cecil folded her arms with her red painted lips twisted in a suspicious line. "What you said about your child. Is Thane actually the father?" 'Is Thane the father?' The question rang in her head so
