She stood up instinctively, her voice trembling as she asked, “Why is he handcuffed?”

One of the officers replied, “Madam, he is a criminal. It is not safe to have him roaming free. He can hurt you or anyone around. Best to keep a beast like him restrained.”

The words stung. Anne glanced at Nicholas who remained silent. She wanted to protest and to demand they release her father from those shackles but something stopped her. She knew Jacob’s crimes were severe in law’s eyes. Still in this moment, all she could see was her father. The man she had missed so much and the man she had loved all her life.
