Scott’s POV

The trees and scenery around us passed in a blur as we sped down the forest road that led to Vincenzo’s home. As soon as he’d told us how to exit the property, I’d carried Christina in my arms and sped down the hallway, ready to evacuate the premises without second thoughts, or even a glance back at the unfolding chaos. At that moment, it was as though I had just one mission to take Christina to safety. Just as Vincenzo had said, the car was waiting at the back, with the engine running, and the doors opened. We got in and the driver took to the wheels, speeding out of the compound. Behind us, was another of Vincenzo’s security detail, to keep us safe.

Christina was sitting across from me but I still couldn’t look at her, for fear that I might find an injury or even as little as a bruise that would show she was hurt, and bring back the ugly reality of what could have happened, if we had been just a minute late.
