Amelia

“Give me a son,” Lachlan growled into my ear as his hips pistoned harder, driving his hardness deeper into me.

I cried out in both anguish and pleasure as my body climbed higher and higher and finally reached the crevice.

“Oh God,” I moaned, my nails digging into his back as I clung to him with all my might.

I came with a choked sob and Lachlan followed a moment later, gritting out his daily mantra into my ear as he came.

“Give me a son.”

I had heard those words everyday of my life for the past three years and I was sick of it. Every time, I swore to myself that I’d be stronger and the words wouldn’t affect me, but I failed each and every time.

Just like now, I could feel one more crack in my heart as the man I loved; the man I was hopelessly in love with; my husband, with jerked away from my body like I was contagious, shot me an acidic look and stomped off to his room.

My husband and I hadn’t shared a bed for more than sex since our marriage three years ago. In fact, I was little more than walking reproductive organs to him.

All he wanted and all he would ever want from me is an heir to the massive Mallory empire, after which I’d be discarded as effectively as used tissue.

Not for the first time in my life, I turned my face into my pillow and wept, the pleasure of my orgasm washing away just as quickly as it had come.

I didn’t hear the door open, but I felt my husband’s presence in the room. I snapped my head up from the bed to stare at him through wet eyes. He only had on a towel knotted around his waist.

Lachlan Mallory, my husband was a stunning man. I could still remember my elation when he had asked me to marry him. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world and I had been the envy of all my friends back then.

My husband was over six feet tall with a full head of dark brown hair that was at the moment sexily mussed up from our bed activities. He had intense dark brown eyes and finely shaped dark brows over it, high cheekbones, a full pink mouth and a sharp jawline.

His body was also a work of art, with his broad shoulders, muscled build and visible row of abs. It was enough to make my mouth water, but I resisted the urge to gape at him because he would only use it to mock me.

“W-what are you doing here?” I asked in a small and timid voice.

After years of being abused by my step mother and now my husband, I felt weak and extremely vulnerable. Even though Lachlan would never go as far as to lay his hands on me, I knew he hated me and it was obvious everytime he looked at me and spoke to me.

He laughed mockingly, "It is my house. I have a right to be anywhere I want, or don’t I?”

“Of course you do,” I said hurriedly, “I never meant to insinuate otherwise, I mean I-“

“Shut the hell up!” He snapped, “I’m tired of hearing your whiny, pathetic voice.”

I dropped my head in humiliation.

“Get dressed, my family has invited you and I for dinner.”

Lachlan was always careful never to use the word “us” while talking. He wanted to make it very clear that there was no us. My stomach rolled uncomfortably.

I hated dinners with his family because his mother was a carbon copy of my step mother.

“I have to s-skip,” I stammered, “You were a little rough and I’m really sore.”

He sneered at me in irritation, “Don’t pretend that you don’t love all the things I do to you in bed. After all, you never fail to orgasm.”

I felt heat rise to my face, because he wasn’t lying. No matter how cruel he was, no matter all the demeaning words he tried to use to humiliate me, I still ended up enjoying sex with my husband and coming every single time, “Th-that’s not what I’m s-saying at-“

“Your damn stammering is pissing me off. You are so pathetic that you can’t even face me and speak.” He said with derision, “How did I end up with such a useless woman.”

A fresh set of tears filled my eyes and on seeing it, he only rolled his eyes, “The only thing you know how to do is cry. You can’t even do the most basic thing that every woman can do effortlessly. All I want from you is a son, but I guess that’s asking too much from a worthless piece of trash like you.”

“Stop being so mean. I never did anything to deserve this. Any of this!” I cry out, “All I’ve ever done is to make the best out of a bad situation. I’m trying my best.”

“Your best is simply not good enough,” he slashed a hand through the air, “I am sick of talking to you. I am sick of looking at you even. Get dressed and be ready and waiting at the foyer in fifteen minutes. If you make me wait, you’ll walk there. Don’t test me, Amelia.”

With those spat-out words, he walked out of the room, leaving me shaking and miserable as was my usual.

Feeling nauseous, I stood up on shaky legs and rushed to the bathroom, managing to make it to the toilet bowl before all the food I had eaten earlier came rushing back up and out of my throat.

I felt so sick and horrible, but I knew I couldn’t test Lachlan by disobeying him. This was not a marriage, this was a prison. I had gone from being my stepmother’s prisoner to being my husband’s.

Crawling out of the bathroom, I opened the secret compartment of my dresser and pulled out a sheet of paper.

A sheet of paper that was the key to my freedom.

Amelia“Green isn’t your color. You should have worn blue,” Lachlan snapped as he approached me.I had been waiting for him at our foyer for over twenty five minutes and he had finally arrived and had jumped right into criticizing me.“I’m S-sorry,” I said, “I can go change.”“There’s no time,” he hissed, “We’re already late enough as it is.” As if he hadn’t been the one to make us late.“You should have employed my sister’s personal shopper like she had suggested for you. She always looks so classy while you look like a pauper.”I held back my retort that I wasn’t sure he would be all that pleased with me dressing like a high class hooker like his sister. I didn’t think I had ever seen Nina Mallory wearing a dress that reached to mid thigh. “Let’s go.” He hissed, “I can’t wait for the day you’ll finally stop embarrassing me.” I followed him with my head down like I was headed to my own execution. It was safe to say that Lachlan’s family hated me. While his mother and sister always

Amelia “You’re awake!” Someone exclaimed in a kind Southern twang. I opened my eyes slowly, disoriented and confused. Where was I? The walls were a plain white and flooded with harsh lights. I winced, trying to understand what was going on. “Where am I?” I asked groggily. “Poor darling,” the accent replied. “you’re in the Maryland hospital.” I turned my head carefully to see a nurse staring down at me worriedly. My whole body hurt but my head felt like someone had taken a hammer to it. “What happened? Why am I here?” “Don’t you remember?” The last thing I remembered was running out of the Mallory house and my husband screaming my name. I remembered feeling terrified and horrified by my actions. Everything after that was a big blur. “You ran into the street and got knocked down by an incoming bike. You’re lucky that the bike was going slowly and you didn’t get yourself killed.” The nurse chided softly. “What were you thinking?” I was thinking that I needed to run as fast as

Amelia“Lachlan, I have good news,I’m pregnant. No- that’s too boring,” I muttered to myself as I hurried into the house excitedly. I couldn’t wait to tell my husband the good news. It was the one thing he had wanted since the beginning of this marriage. The only thing he had hoped for. I believed this would help us get closer, and finally heal the rift between us.But what if he didn’t believe me? The thought immediately halted me, but there was an easy solution to it. I could do a quick pregnancy test now so I could tell him with the evidence. I immediately rushed to my room and dug out one of the kits and followed the instructions then went to find Lachlan. But as soon as I burst into the home office excitedly, my heart dropped to my stomach at the sight before me. My husband was seated on his big leather chair, and on the hand of the chair was none other than Cassie. I froze in shock as her hands slowly undid the the buttons of his shirt, murmuring silky words at him while he l

Lachlan“A divorce?” I repeated blankly. I stilled in shock at the hard look in Amelia’s eyes. It was a look I had never seen before in our three years of marriage. She had always looked at me helplessly and with love and devastation that irritated me so much and made my skin crawl. The last thing I had ever expected was for my wife to be the one to serve me divorce papers tonight. Everything I had done had been to make her miserable in this marriage, but she knew the stipulations on the marriage contract arranged by my late father. She wasn’t entitled to a single dollar of my money if she ever divorced me unless she had given me an heir. So far, she was still the same barren woman from day one. Amelia hadn’t been my first, second or even hundredth choice for a wife. My plan had always been to end up with Cassie. But my father, the manipulative bastard had twisted my hands all the way to his grave and saddled me with this joke of a woman. “Yes,” she said slowly and stepped forwa

Lachlan.I was still in pain and hurt. How she was able to beat me at my game baffled me a lot. At some point, I was almost losing it. I think I need therapy. “I see no reason why you'd always want to keep looking for that miserable bitch. She's not worth all the stress, Lachie; she's not worth it. c'mon” Cassandra's words were beginning to irritate my ears. I couldn't tell what the reason but it was just irritating. At this point in time, I don't feel like talking to anyone. I was hell-bent on bringing her back to the house. If she had left alone, I wouldn't be moved whatsoever, maybe a little though, but she's left with my damn child! My growth, for God's sake! I won't in any way let this go down like that; I never will. “Look, Cassie, you just have to let me be as we speak; it's not making any sense to me that you're always nagging me to death; please let me think!” For the very first time, I lashed out at Cassie. Her countenance changed immediately. I shouldn't have shouted at

Amelia I can't tell where the courage to file for divorce came from. I just know how to do it to save myself, and more so for the sake of my mental health. I can't afford to see him and Cassandra all loved up while I sit down to watch their folly. It'd be very stupid and silly for me to still stay there after all the humiliation he has put me through in the last 3 years of our marriage. I had wanted to break the good news of my pregnancy to him. At least you wanted a son all these years, and I was finally giving him one. I had imagined a series of scenarios in my head; all I wanted was for my husband to love me and treat me like the baby girl I've always been. Nirvana's wildest dreams: Did I imagine a day like this coming? Even if I wanted to fight for a divorce, it would not be so soon. I packed my bag as tears flowed down in torrents. I'll look at the pregnancy kits in my hand, reading the meaning of the results you can show me. It's too much to bear to have to leave the home I'v

Amelia I took a deep breath as I looked around. I never expected Bailey to live in such a beautiful house. I mean, she's a nurse for crying out loud. How the hell does someone who spends all day cleaning up vomit and attending to sick patients have the money to afford such a mansion?“You have a beautiful house, ma.” I complimented her as she ushered me into the living room.“You are probably wondering how a nurse like me who spends all day cleaning up after sick people could afford something like this.” She chuckled, and my face went red.How did she know what I was thinking?! It was probably a wild guess.“Don't worry, I can't read your mind. I've been asked a lot of times by people who visit.”Bailey placed my bag down beside the sofa; we argued for almost five minutes before I finally let her carry it for me.Sigh, this woman is a lot.Don't get me wrong, I love how kind she is, but I guess I'm not used to such kindness. Especially with my current situation.I sat down, and Bailey

EricI hung up the phone with Aunt Bailey.“Get me Thomas.” I said this to the maid beside me. I always made sure to have one of them on standby in case I needed something urgently. I can't be shouting in my own house, that minus steeze. The maid left and, a few seconds later, came back with Thomas, my personal assistant and the head of all the workers in my mansion.“I have a guest coming over; prepare one of the guest rooms. The guest is a lady, so prepare accordingly. Also, add a bit of Aunt Bailey style to the room to make it cosy. We both know my aunt is a pro at making someone comfortable.”“Do you want me to arrange a particular room?” Thomas asked.“Nah, just pick whatever.” I shrugged.I just got off the phone with my aunt Bailey, and she told me she was bringing a lady over. I was curious about the kind of lady she was bringing and if she would be my spec. She had been disturbing me for a while, so I showed her a woman who had my heart. Is it the reason she is bringing a stra

Lachlan’s POVI slammed the door behind me, the sound echoing through my soul. “How could she! How could she do this to me!” I fumed, dragging my hand through my already tousled hair. “What's going on?” Cassie raced into the room. I ignored her, still stewing in my rage. “Lachlan!” Cassie grabbed my shoulder and made me look at her. Her expression suddenly changed from one of concern to outright shock. “Lachlan,” she cupped my face. “What happened?”Seeing her sad and confused made my heart break, so I put my arms around her and held her tight. “Don't go anywhere.” I muttered, burying my face in her shoulder. “I won't.” She whispered.I don't know how it happened, but later, I found myself sitting by the kitchen island with a bottle in my left hand and a full glass in my right. “You have to calm down, Lach. Not everyone's who they say they are.” Cassie rubbed circles on my back.I took a swig from the bottle and nearly choked on the burning alcohol. “Shit! Amelia lied to me!

Amelia's POVI was crying, and it was all my fault. I hurt myself. I did this to myself.I sat quietly on the couch, flipping through the photo album. The smile on his face, the laughter in his eyes, his loving gaze on mine…. My husband, Lachlan, was happy. He really was.I traced the contours of the photographs, and my heart clenched. I hurt Lachlan. Bailey was right. I was running from my problems. I thought Eric could help with it, but I was wrong. It only made things worse. Everything about Lachlan and me—the picnic, the date at the park, our kiss, and nights together—was all becoming a distant memory because of me. The guilt was crushing me. I could've let Lachlan in when he was being more supportive. I should've loved him for it, told him what I was going through, and gone easy on him, but I didn't. I didn't care that he was more understanding; instead, I blamed him. Tears filled my eyes, and I succumbed to the torrents of tears in my eyes. “Amelia, please, stop crying.” Lili

Lachlan's POVA few hours earlier,Spending time in Cassie's made me realise how much I've missed doing my favourite things. Our long walks, baking together, watching our favourite movies; that was something I missed. Watching Cassie laugh at me while we played snooker in the game room made me realise how much I had missed this. Now, I begin to question if I was really happy with Amelia. After all, all I did was to make her happy. Everything I did was for her. I never did any of my hobbies but hers. Only hers. Do I even love Amelia?“Lach? You okay?” Cassie's face hovers over mine, and I’m startled. She placed her hand over my forehead. “You aren't running a fever. So what's wrong?”“Your eyes are blue.” She froze. “What?”I reached out my hand to cup her cheek. “Your eyes are blue.”Her cheeks pinked, and she put her hand over mine. “Yeah. Pretty, aren't they?”“Like the summer sky.” I flashed her a smile. She leaned her face closer. “Yeah.”“How could I not notice?” I tried to pul

Eric's povI was busy overthinking my ass off and didn't hear Aunt Bailey enter the room.“Eric?” Her hand was on my shoulder again. “Are you okay?”I blinked twice. “Oh yeah. Sorry, I zoned out for a bit.”“Don't worry about work. Your secretary is doing a fine job along with everyone else.” she smiled.I know that already. I don't hire incompetent people. “Yeah. They are.”“Good. Now, cheer up.” She smiled and passed me a bottle of water. “Thanks.” I uncapped the bottle and took a long sip. Damn, was I this thirsty?“Here.” She passed me the tray of food. Dinner was chicken and rice bowl with steamed vegetables. Lots of vegetables. I could get allergic just by looking at it. Yay.I dug in. The taste was top-notch. All thanks to Aunt Bailey. Sometimes, she’d refuse me to eat hospital food but other times, she'd let me eat it. I wonder what changed her mind today. Maybe, Amelia talked to her. Amelia hated the hospital and even cried when she saw me eating the food. I nearly laughed

Eric’s POVFuck!I messed up pretty badly, didn't I? Each time I close my eyes, my mind replays my conversations with Amelia. I had her. I had her in my grip, and I just blew it. I fucked up, and she knew it. She probably wants nothing to do with me anymore. My words fell flat, and she shut me down. Big time.I need a new approach desperately. I need something that will make her see me in a different light. Something that'll make her run back to me like she used to. Something... Aha! The Damascus Road method. It all goes down to manipulation. I'm sorry, Amelia, but I must do you his, or I'll never have you. I reached out for my iPad on the bedside table. I had a book that talked about this persuasion technique. If you want to make someone believe you have a sudden change of heart, then this book was the one for you. I saw it online, and now I'm glad I bought it. I will make Amelia believe I wasn't selfish or arrogant and that I have sent the light. I would make myself look so guilt

Matthew's POV. “So I'll ask you again, Mrs. Mallory, I leaned forward. “Do you and your husband have any enemies?” A shuddering breath escaped her lips, and she tumbled with the frills on her skirt. “We—we don't.” She was lying. “Think again.” “I don't have enemies, but I don't know about Lachlan…” She yelled. Not a clever way to respond to an arm twist. Then she looked at me, fear dilating in her brown eyes. “You said something about Chris trying to loop my husband in on something…” “Ah, yes,” I sat up. “My partner and I paid Chris Mallory a visit. We have reason to believe that he's a suspect.” Her eyes went round—a giveaway. She knows something. “Mrs. Mallory, how's your relationship with your brother-in-law?” “It’s just as you said. He’s my brother-in-law.” “Do you both get along?” I asked. “Yes.” She replied almost immediately. This interrogation is becoming a pain in my beautiful ass. “Mrs. Mallory, I am trying to help you here. You got attacked by some

Amelia's POV I turned on the faucet and scooped water to splash on my face. Honestly, I was a bit startled by Eric's confession, but a part of me had always known that one day it would happen. A part of me wanted to hear it, but the other half denied it.  I palmed my forehead. “Oh, God. I need a break.” “Amelia?” I heard Bailey's voice behind me.  “I'm here.” I reached for a napkin and wiped my face with it. Bailey entered the restroom. Something was odd with the way she looked at me, and I figured I already knew what she wanted to say. “You got a minute to spare?” She began. “Yeah.” I replied with a nod.  We walked out of the restroom and navigated our way to the hospital cafeteria. Thankfully, it was lunchtime, and I was starving. Bailey was kind enough to order food online and had it delivered. I couldn't stand the hospital dietary plans.  I snipped my pasta with scissors befo

Amelia's POV If someone had told me that in the next 20 minutes I would be ugly crying in a hospital cafeteria, I would have said, “Hell, no!” but that was what happened. Bailey sat me down.  “Darling,” she began with a southern burr in her voice. “I'm so sorry to have to say this to you, but I have to be really honest. I appreciate you coming here to see my nephew, but it's wrong to do that.” I was a bit taken aback. “What?” Bailey nestled the cup of coffee in her hand. “I don't mean any harm, but seeing Eric while your marriage is in shambles is wrong. I know you just want to escape the pain, to find comfort in a difficult time like this, but that's not how it works, honey. You're broken.” “My marriage is not in shambles, and I'm not broken.” I shook my head, nearly tearing up. “I know a broken woman when I see one,” she took my hand. “And you, my dear, are broken.”   A few hours ago,I joined Eric

Cassandra's POVI had never seen Lachlan in such a sorry state before. Crap, he literally looked terrible—droopy eyes, dishevelled hair, reeking of alcohol and misery. He was a mess, but he was all mine for the taking. Thank you for acting so dumb, Amelia. He slumped into the couch and leaned his head back.“Are you okay?” I sat on the edge of the couch. He pinched the skin between his eyes. “No... I don't know, Cassie.”Cassie. I missed hearing that name from his lips.“You need a shower, big boy, or my couch will reek,” I gestured to him. “Get up.”“I just need a second.” He heaved a sigh, frustrated.Okay.
