My mind still reeling from the shock, I failed to hear what Antonio was saying. The minute he walked in I recognised the scar under his chin. The scar I had planted. I almost smirked in satisfaction.
“You have some nerve, don't you?” I finally looked up at him to see him already staring down at me.
“Fancy seeing you, Antonio. It's clear the fire wasn't able to burn you to death” I smirked seeing the stone cold expression return back to his ugly face.
“I'm glad to know you still have that smart mouth” he licked his lip, making bile rise to my throat. “But not even my obsession with you will save you from death now. You knew it was long coming”
“Yeah, I know. I always knew it was you behind those black tinted windows. The scar made it easier. Not even the black mask could hide how ugly you were, Antonio” I said with as much calm I could muster. I couldn't let him see the fear behind my eyes or the way my heartbeat tried to match the one inside my belly. If only they would have caught me eight months from now, I would have even helped him pull the trigger on my head.
He took out his gun and pointed it to my head. My brain screamed run, but the rope tied to my hands continued to burn on skin painfully forcing me to remain seated.
“At least let her go” I turned my head to Monica who laid on the floor, half-unconscious.
Not even bothering to give her a glance, he said, “she laid her bed, let her lie on it”
“You don't have to do this, Antonio. You know I wouldn't tell a soul” I felt my eyes burned with tears for the little child that rolled up like a ball in my belly.
“You have to go, Astrid Grey” I heard the gun safety unlock.
I closed my eyes, hoping the impact of the bullet wouldn't be too painful, hoping it wouldn't be enough to hurt my baby. Maybe if I fell on my back, my baby could come out of this alive.
But I never heard the gun go off, at least not the gun pointed at me. In that instance, it felt like I had been pushed into a video game. Series of gunshot was heard.
I looked up to see Antonio wearing a similar expression of confusion like me. He quickly ran out.
Using that opportunity, I quickly crawled to Monica. I turned her body sideways to retrieve the small knife that she had managed to snatch from his pocket before he hit her.
At least she was good for something.
I cut the rope from my hands, feeling my blood flow again. Not giving myself the time to relish in my partial freedom, I quickly cut Monica's rope too.
“Monica!” I tapped her hand, trying to wake her up. “Monica! Get the fuck up!” I said louder this time..I saw her eyes flutter carefully before she finally opened them slightly.
“Come on, stand up”
“ Am I__ are we in heaven?” She stuttered weakly.
“That's a very far fetched dream even for you, Monica, don't you think?” I smirked at her.
“Wh_what?”
“Get up. Elijah's here.”
Just like that I heard the door burst open and someone thrown across the room, his body hitting the rods on the floor.
“Elijah!” Monica shrieked.
I covered my mouth trying to silent the scream that threatened to spill out of my mouth.
There was a reason Antonio was the leader of the gang. I had never seen a man with such strength. I feared for Elijah's life.
Before Antonio could attack him again, Elijah stood up and attacked him. “You bastard!” Antonio cried.
With a snarl, Antonio launched himself at Elijah, a knife glinting in his hand. Elijah dodged the blade by mere inches countering the attack with a kick to Antonio's arm, making him lose the knife in an instance.
Elijah quickly took out his gun. “It's over” he said, pulling the trigger faster than I could say SHIT.
I continued to stare at the dead body just mere inches away from my feet. I wasn't frightened, I had been in this type of scene mire than I wanted to admit.
“Maya” Elijah called me, his voice firm but gentle. “We need to get out of here” he continued, a different softness in his eyes that I couldn't recognise.
I nodded still looking shell-shocked and a little bit amused at the whole situation. I grabbed his outstretched hand, pulling myself up. “Monica. She's probably too weak to walk by herself” I reminded him of his ex that was still cowering on the floor.
I watched Elijah's gaze flicked to Monica, his expression unfathomable, “The guys will come for her. We need to get out of here now!” he said signalling to one of his team member's.
We quickly made our way out of there, my feet hitting a small rock which had almost made me lose my footing before Elijah steadied me. “ This is not the time for you to be clumsy” he grumbled.
“Yeah, I was feeling so giddy so I wanted trip” I spat sarcastically. He gave me a glare but continued to drag me out of the building. “How did you manage find us?” I looked behind to see Monica being assisted by one of Elijah's guys, her hands resting on his shoulder.
Elijah didn't bother to give me an answer and at that moment I felt a strange anger surge through me. I pressed my feet on the floor, making us stop.
“What's wrong with you?” Elijah growled.
“What's wrong with me? You're fucking asking me that? I could have been killed there. Me and your child! What took you so long?!”
Just as Elijah was about to utter something equally angry we heard someone chuckle evilly behind us.
“It's funny how you ran from us and ended up right in the hands of your number one enemy, Maya” Antonio staggered, his gun pointed at us. He glanced at Elijah before looking back at me.
Before the guys or Elijah could shoot him, Antonio released the trigger.
I screamed so loud I felt my vision go dark.
My eyes gazed blankly outside the window as we drove away from the warehouse. My mind reeled with thoughts of Monica, the guilts starting to creep in, paralyzing me to the soft leather chair.‘Why did this have to happen?’, I thought to myself. ‘No matter what she did, Monica didn't deserve to die. All she did was love the wrong person’My eyes began to well up with tears as I thought of Monica's lifeless body on the cold dirty floor. In her death, she looked so innocent, I almost prayed to God to trade our souls. ‘What if I had done something different?’ I asked myself. ‘What if I had tried to reason with Monica instead of pushing her away? She could have still been here, hating me from the the corners’My guilt began to consume me, making me feel like I was responsible for her death. I knew it was rational but I just couldn't shake the feeling. It felt like a heavy load on my shoulder. As we arrived at Elijah's house, I felt a sense of relieve wash over me. Chapter one I sat at the bar, nursing my drink in my hands. It was rowdy, but I couldn't deny I needed the distraction. It had been two years since I left New York.“Hi. Mind if I join you?” I looked up to find the most beautiful man I had ever set my eyes on.“Sure, it's supposed to be a free world” I shrugged, trying to act non-chalant, when I was anything but that. He sat down on the stool beside me, never taking his gaze from my body. I couldn't deny that I loved his attention on me. I felt my skin burn with intense desire for this stranger. “I'm Elijah. You seem a little bit out of it” he said.“I'm fine. It's just the loud noise” I responded, averting my eyes from his hypnotizing ones.“You're at a bar. You should expect this.” “Hmm,” was my only response. “I didn't catch your name” he said. “I never told you…” I hesitated, unsure of how much I should reveal to him. “Maya”I looked at him, and just then I saw something flash in his green orbs. But it quickly went away as s
Chapter TwoThree weeks later “It's positive” my hands shook as I stared at my best friend with tears filled eyes.“Oh baby…” Tiffany, my bff, stood up quickly, her arms quickly engulfing me in a warm hug.“What do I do?” I sobbed into her top. “Don't cry, it's not your fault. You didn't know it would happen”, she tried to reassure me. “Come here” she dragged me to my bed, sitting me down.“What's your plan now?” Tiffany asked, her gaze soft on mine.“I don't know. I can't keep a baby. I can't even fend for myself” “I know, Maya. But you should know I'm here to support you. I'm here for you, girl. You don't have to get rid of it”“It's not just about the money. I don't know if I can mother a child. I never grew up with one, you know that” I said, sniffing in the process.“I know, baby. Look, you're the most amazing person in the world. You're kind, caring, strong and selfless, and I'm sure taking care of a child would never be a struggle for you. And if eventually things start to s
Chapter ThreeAs I stood in front of the sleek glass, I felt a sense of intimidation wash over me. Elijah was insanely rich. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me.I took a deep breath and walked over to the receptionist in front of me. “ Hi, good morning”, I greeted her, trying to hide my uneasiness.“Hi, can I help you?” she asked, her eyes still fixed on the computer in front of her. Rude.“Yeah, I'm here to see Elijah Ryker…I mean Tyler. Elijah Tyler”. And there I just spoiled any chance of looking confident in from of this receptionist who seemed to be a bitch.“Do you have an appointment?” She asked, finally looking at me. She eyed me, a look of disgust spread across her face. I also got a full look at her. She was quite beautiful. She was gorgeous. A Victoria secret model kind of gorgeous.“No, I don't. But I really need to see him” I hesitated.“You can't see him. You have to have an appointment to see Mr Elijah Ryker”. She said his name like he was a god. ‘He's a god in bed’
Chapter Four “Wh_what are you doing here?” I stood up from the bed. My legs went weak, almost making me slump. The nurse quickly rushed to me, her hand wrapping around my shoulder.“You were about to abort my baby?” Elijah growled, the anger written clearly on his face.“I_ I wasn't… I was about…”I didn't know why I was stuttering, but I couldn't just find the right words to say.“Pick up your bag. We're leaving”, he said, before leaving me in the room to dress up.I walked out of the exam room, my eyes scanning the reception area. I saw him standing close to the door, his hands in his pockets. He looked angry but yet handsome…just like he did that night. I walked over to him, my head cleared.“How did you know I was here?” I asked, my eyes struggled to look at his dark ones.“That's not the issue. You're not getting rid of this pregnancy” he glared at him, his voice cold. I hated how he talked to me, I hated how he looked at me…like that night meant nothing to him. Did he not get h
Chapter five I sat on the stool, my best friend, Tiffany, doing my hair. I looked beautiful, very beautiful, I couldn't deny it. Will Elijah like my new look? Would he go weak at the knees the same way I knew I would go weak when I saw him in those dark suits?Tiffany stopped, examining her work, a look of worry sat on her face.“What's wrong, Tee?” I asked her. “Are you sure about this? Maya, you're marrying a guy you barely know?” She said, her lips set into a frown.I forced a smile, looking up at her. “ I'm fine, Tee. I know it doesn't seem that way, but really, this is what is best. Elijah is what is best for me”“I don't know, Maya. I just don't feel good about this marriage. Why is he in such a rush? You've known the guy..for like three weeks? Minus the two weeks he was actually absent in your life” she said, refusing to see my point.“I know it seems crazy and unbelievable, but we're in love… I just know it, Tee. He's the one for me” I said, the lies going through my teeth s
Chapter six My hands trembled as I signed the contract, the ink smudging on the white paper.“Welcome to your hell, Astrid Grey,” Elijah whispered into my ear, his cold breath fanning my neck delicately.I felt a chill run down my spine. How did he know my real name? What have I gotten myself into?“Don't look so surprised, Maya or should I say Astrid,” he said in a faux concerned voice. “I know you more than you know yourself.”I stared at him fighting the urge to punch him on the face. I could tell he could read the irritation in my face when he plastered a sly smirk on his face.Just then, Tiffany's voice cut through the tension. “Maya, what's going on? What's happening? Is he threatening you?”I almost considered spilling the entire truth to her, but I knew that would only put her in danger, more danger than she already was.“No, he isn't” I turned to Elijah who had a look of triumph on his smug face.“He is all I ever wanted” I turned back to her with a smile forced on my face. “I
I woke up to a wet couch beneath my butt, the smell of my arousal softly filling the air. I rubbed my tired eyes, the event of the previous day slowly seeping into my head.Fucking Elijah! He had introduced Monica as his girlfriend, reminding me what a sham our marriage was before he took her into the bedroom we were supposed to share for our honeymoon. The sounds of her moan and his did nothing to satiate the hunger that had been brewing inside me since the beginning of the day.“I see Monica was not the only one moaning my name last night” the devil spoke behind me, his hot breath spreading warmth treacherously over my neck as I stood behind the small bar.“Shut up!” I said, feeling my cheeks heat up for whatever reason. “How low will you stoop, Elijah? You brought your mistress to your honeymoon few hours after signing your marriage contract! You're a disgusting animal!”my eyes meet his, his eyes turning cold. “Watch how you speak to me,” he said, now closer to me, barely a foo

My eyes slowly opened to the dim lights above that felt like a thousand knives stabbing me in the back. Fragments of the dinner party raced through my mind, the smell of smoke, the sound of shattering glass and the feeling of falling made me want to puke all over the dusty floor.I noticed a figure slumped against the floor, a few feets beside me. Her eyes flickered open, as she immediately locked gaze with me.“Monica” her name came out as a soft whisper from my lips.“Maya” she retorted with a scowl on her lips.“You!” I said, my voice much more thicker, accusation on the tip of my tongue. “I should have known”“I don't know what you're talking about, Maya” she defended, but her eyes held a different answer. It was written all over her, she knew I knew she was behind the attack.I struggled to sit up, the rope tied on my wrist piercing my skin painfully. “How low will you go to destroy my marriage?” I snapped at her.“You say ‘my marriage’ like it's not just some scam contract”“T
