The loud rain battered against the roof of her car as she braved the night. The storm signal was the greatest tonight, and yet she was out there in the streets with zero visibility. It didn’t help that she was only donning a thin red dress, her bare feet enduring the kiss of the metal pedals on her soles.
Andrea was crying inside and out. Her hands would sometimes move to clear her eyes and her nose, but her teeth were still clenched in anger… resentment… self-pity.
How hurt must a woman be before she was allowed to walk away from a relationship? Not only was she getting suspicions that her boyfriend was cheating on her, but he was also becoming more and more aggressive. She could remember it vividly, just like the previous times he made her heart jump in fright.
…
“What do you mean I can’t expect you to—? Do you know how hard the rain is falling outside?” A booming voice of an angry man made Andrea shudder in her spot. She was reheating the food she cooked earlier, not knowing that Mathias would be home late that night. However, even when he was already home, he was still on the phone with a person for work.
It was their anniversary today; she even dressed up for him. Her nails were newly done, and her blonde hair sat bouncy on her shoulders from the perm. Still, he was on the phone for work.
Andrea lowered the heat and took a teaspoon to taste her soup, making sure that it wouldn’t have the burnt taste that Mathias hated. The last time, he had thrown the pot over just because Andrea burned his meal from reheating it.
She made soft, smacking sounds, liking the sweetness of her dish. Since it was satisfactory, she turned off the heat and prepared some plates for her boyfriend. Moreover, she could just serve the dessert for her to enjoy. She had already eaten, but she wanted to join him for his late dinner.
Crash! Andrea flinched and gripped the plate tighter. She just heard something crash in the living room where Mathias was. Was it a window or the glass center table? Andrea brought down the plate she almost dropped and went to see what happened.
“Matt? Is everything okay?” Andrea still wore a sweet smile as if she could appease him with her voice. She poked her head in and saw how Mathias was looking down their window. The white rain was also getting inside their apartment, judging from the droplets that she could see jumping in from the window. “Did you see something outside?”
“That was a shoe,” Matthias answered as he walked back toward the couch where he sat previously. Andrea thought he was limping, but it was just because he was missing one of his shoes.
The girl flicked her eyes back at the broken window, the rain slowly wetting the carpet and the nearby cabinets. She then walked in a hurry past him. “I’ll patch the window—”
Andrea felt a sharp pain in her wrist. When she took a look at what snagged her, she noticed how Mathias grabbed her. His nails were even digging into her skin.
He then said, “You get me some beer first. Deal with the window later.”
“Beer? But you haven’t eaten anything yet.” Andrea somewhat frowned at him, but his flaming dark eyes scorched her. She only whimpered and looked away. “All right.”
Andrea walked back into the kitchen to check the fridge. When the cold light hit her face, her hazel eyes didn’t even shine in joy. There was a cake inside with lettering for their anniversary, but she couldn’t even serve it because Mathias was not in the mood. She figured he had even forgotten.
As for the beer, she wondered why he was experimenting with a new taste. She had never seen this label before, only when she found one in the trash. When Mathias bought a case of it, she knew that he was getting a new favorite. “I should take note.”
With a smile, she brought the beer to him. “Hey, lighten up, okay? It’s supposed to be a special day today. Here, I got you a can. Baby, why don’t you—?”
“What the fuck is this?” Mathias wasn’t even looking or listening to her when she spoke. All he did was grab the beer and popped it open. When the taste hit his mouth, he spat it out mercilessly. He even glared at her as he got to his feet. “What did you just give me?”
“Huh, I saw that you’re buying a new—”
Piak! Andrea wasn’t even finished explaining when Mathias sent her to the ground with a strong backhand slap. Her entire body rattled as the pain crawled from her face, tears automatically dripping from her eyes. She was shocked and in pain… most importantly, terrified.
Mathias hurled the can across the room, spilling as it hit the wall. He walked toward her like a madman carrying something so heavy it could break her skull open. His dark eyes glared down at her. “You useless piece of shit. Do you want to die? Get up and get me the right one.”
At those words, Andrea didn’t even dare to stand. She crawled away from the man's reach and into the kitchen. When her shaking hands landed on the fridge’s handle, her eyes remembered a secret inside the plastic jars on top. She grabbed the plastic jar and took out a duplicate key for her car. Without thinking twice, she ran to the backdoor and out of their apartment.
Her heart pounded as much as her bare feet did against the emergency stairs. Before she fully knew of her actions, her body was submerged in freezing temperatures due to the rain. However, she still ran to her car and got inside. If she wanted to live another day, she would drive away.
So, she did.
…
Ring! Ring! Her phone on the dashboard began to ring, taking her out of her trance. She glanced at the screen and saw the wretched face of her boyfriend on the caller ID. Her lips only pursed as she decided to ignore it. There was nothing but pain in her heart when she looked back at what he was once.
The Mathias she belonged to was a decent man, with dreams and a sore spot. What was waiting for her in her apartment was nothing but a monster.
“Stop calling me. I won’t answer you. I won’t let you know that you will never… find me ever again!” Andrea screamed inside the car, but her eyes were still glancing at the vibrating phone. She then reached out to toss the phone into the seat next to her.
However, her grip was already bad. The phone fell halfway, and she followed it with her gaze, afraid that the fall might pick up the call. It’s just that when she spied on the unclear road before her, someone ended up running across!
“Dammit!” Andrea could only see the shadow of the person, but she knew that she knocked into someone, even if her car’s brake activated just as fast as her stomp. The sudden stop caused her to be flung forward, hitting her head against the steering wheel. She was driving so fast that her seatbelt didn’t save her from injury.
Andrea didn’t pass out from the pain, however. She just slowly sat up straight and nursed her forehead. There was no blood, so she should still be safe to drive. It’s just that she had almost run over someone. She didn’t know if the person was hurt or had died; she couldn’t ultimately leave while she was aware that someone needed her help.
It’s just that… Mathias had his own car. What if he caught up with her if she decided to stop and help out the person? It was basically choosing between her misery and one that she had bestowed on another. Her grip on the steering wheel tightened, and she made a cry in frustration.
Andrea couldn’t bring herself to move at all. “…what do I do? Oh, my God, what do I do now?”
The loud chatters of the people enjoying the birthday party echoed from one table to another. After all, everyone at the party was those who had put their own expensive accessories to boast and get people to kiss their asses. Perhaps, the only person not enjoying the party was the birthday celebrator himself. Gryphon Pearce sat at their table, only swaying the wine inside his glass. His thick brows furrowed at the messages flashing on his phone, one by one. Those were notifications that he had yet to attend to. Some were from his friends who kept on posting photos and tagging him, while most were from a woman that he was supposed to pick up from her hotel room. Yes, Gryphon dared not to fetch the woman that he was supposed to marry. “If you continue frowning, you will get older faster.” The person sitting next to him chuckled as he watched his best friend toss his own phone at the table. “Shouldn’t you go find Roxanne now? Your parents will finish talking to everyone soon.” “I don
Andrea didn’t know why the man knew her name, but if he could move, then… maybe, she wouldn’t have to stay here longer than necessary. At this, she rubbed her nose to calm her sniffing and gestured toward the passenger’s seat. She had no choice but to let him in; perhaps, his presence would help her get a grip on her situation better. The man went to open the door and got in as she disengaged the locks. She then spoke as soon as he sat down, “Sorry, I’m not really in the mood to talk. I’ll just drive you to a hospital for your arm.” “Where are you going in this storm? You even looked like you’re heading out for a date.” Gryphon didn’t care about the supposed silence. He huffed before taking a look at the backseat. “You don’t even have a coat or a companion. Are you trying to get yourself killed?” He noticed how the woman was dressed up, only to be left with a pitiful ending. More than that, the vulnerable woman might get in trouble if she continued going around in just that dress t
“There should be one waiting for me.” With no idea of what the staff was preparing for him, Gryphon stood in front of the reception desk while drying his hair, watching the receptionist arrange for their suite. He didn’t even glance at Andrea, who was looking around the hotel’s empty reception hall. It was obviously empty since no one would be here at such a late hour. “Andy, let’s go,” Gryphon called out as he walked to the elevator lobby, key in hand. However, seeing no one behind him, he had to fetch her from where she stood. This girl must have turned deaf with all that water in her ears. He pushed her inside the elevator and pressed the button to close the doors. When the doors closed, the two had no choice but to see their reflections on the metal doors of the elevator. The male stared at himself, noticing how his wrinkled designer white long-sleeve stuck to his body from the wetness it inherited from the suit jacket. The stay inside her car was not even enough to dry him. He
“Me? Your pretend darling?” Andrea only smiled for the photo before laughing out after he tossed the phone to the side. “One, I am not playing a game like that. Two, me, trying to win you back? In case you forgot, you dumped me back in high school because I wasn’t posh enough. I am not going to sacrifice my hard-earned self-esteem just to go posh for you. And three…” “You talk too much. It’s just a yes-or-no question.” With an angry grunt, Gryphon moved his arm from under her head and only placed it on the rim space between them. “I already took the photo, so there’s no point in saying ‘no’ now.” Andrea glared at him before sighing. She only leaned on her back again and looked up at the ceiling. To be honest, what would she gain from saying ‘no’? What was pride in the face of a man who would hunt her down to a corner? It didn’t matter whether it was Mathias or Gryphon; both of them could surely make her life miserable. It’s just that… she didn’t want to feel like she had no voice of
“What is it?” Mathias begrudgingly answered his phone as he tried to huff off his exhaustion. After all, he exerted a lot of energy at every swing he did against Andrea’s soft body. However, his anger was yet to be quenched for real. As long as Andrea could still move, he would not stop. There was no way he would let Andrea run to that man again. It’s just that the voice that came from the phone was as if the cooling breeze of spring. His overall fury only needed a few seconds to be dissolved into a drop of a smile on his face. Mathias then leaned on the wall and kept listening to the voice with a smile that only grew deeper.“Oh, don’t worry. I’ll be there tonight. Sorry about last night. I was too drunk to attend to my phone.” His smile seemed to hit an all-time high
“I look stupid?” Gryphon erased all the sorry on his face, wearing a cold glare to replace his worried gaze. How could he forget that this girl had been always so cheeky that he would smack her just for saying things? He just gave her a warning finger gesture. “You’re lucky we’re in a hospital. I can’t be caught flicking your forehead… oh, wait, I can do that!”“What? No!” At the finger threatening to painfully flick her forehead, Andrea shot her hands up to catch his own hand. However, the bruises and overall weakness of her body kept her from moving all that much. She winced, not at the pain of the flick. With a snort, Gryphon took back his hand that didn’t even land on her face. His phone had also pinged as if it was not meant to be too distracting. He just pulled on his clothes to smooth the
Sadly, Ashley didn’t tell her about it. He would rather have Gryphon tell her as if it was important to her as well. Then again, since it was Ashley who said so, Andrea just shrugged her shoulders. If anything, there was a lot to talk about. It had been more than ten years since they last saw each other, and for two birds with broken wings, their lives sounded a little identical.Gryphon had gotten back to the hospital just a few minutes before visiting hours were done. He even looked like he was drinking before remembering that he had to visit a friend in the private ward. When he sat down and almost missed the chair, Andrea even frowned at him.He then returned her frown, saying nothing for a few seconds. When the strange chime came as if warning visitors to conclude their stay, that was the only time he spoke: “I’m checking you out of this
“What do you mean you didn’t bring anyone?! I have photos!” A woman’s voice came from the intercom, and Gryphon soundlessly growled from the other side. He then turned to the side and saw Andrea gesturing at the door, seemingly screaming without making any audible noise. [Who is that outside? Should I hide?!] Andrea looked a little panicky, her eyes growing wider. This man had no girlfriend, yet there was a woman that he was not letting inside his house. She was even being kept away on the premise that she wanted to search the house for a woman that Gryphon took home. Why would she care if Gryphon took another woman home? [Why would you hide? She’ll eventually leave!] At the gesture, Gryphon competed with Andrea on who got to make their glaring eyes a lot bigger. Some more, and one of them would pop a vein. Andrea got down on the floor as she noticed the gate opening from outside. She pounded on the floor. [You! Why would you lie to me?! You said you have no girlfriend!] Since Gry
At those words, Charlotte frowned before dropping her shoulders in her little tantrum. “You lied to me? Why? I thought princes are supposed to be honest!”“…I don’t want you to think that I’m lonely. Princes have pride.” Gryphon somewhat snorted as he leaned on the frame of the door. He then eyed Andrea who only looked at him, ignoring the indiscernible emotion in her eyes. “We just went to pay for your bills, and you were already gone when we came back. Tch, you’re really Charlotte’s mother, aren’t you?”“Gryphon, I…” Andrea then saw how Marlene and Tommy showed up next to him. She only smiled at the arrival of her friends, feeling embarrassed. “Hey, thank you for coming to see Charlie. Erm, introductions will be messy at this point, I think.”
The next thing Andrea knew, she was lying down on a hospital bed again. She could still remember the things that happened that time, the nightmare that she survived once again. No one could have prepared her for the fact that it only took Mathias four years to completely forget about being human. However, he wouldn’t return to jail anymore. Gryphon made sure he wouldn’t.Even if she looked so pitiful, Andrea didn’t feel her body aching anymore. The drug must have been flushed out already, and the dextrose succeeded in making her body feel refreshed again. The only bad thing about this was that her left hand was in a cast for weeks.“…I have a bulk order…” Andrea whispered before reaching out for her call nurse button. “I need to find Charlie. She must be so scared to be on her own.”
Andrea had to get that heel to help herself. She then looked at how Mathias busied himself with Roxanne just steps away from her. The young mother then moved her left hand and tried to slip it out of the chains wrapped around it. She reached her right hand higher to relieve some pressure from the left as she forcefully worked it out. It didn’t matter how much burns she would get from this action. She had to escape these binds before Mathias finished with the other woman. She must get away before Gryphon got lured here.Keeping her cries to herself, she forced her left hand out of the chains with great difficulty. Her skin grew red and bruised, and her thumb even lost sensation from the potential break from the joint. However, she managed to slowly free her hands without making a sound that was too loud for Mathias to notice.
When he heard his name from the woman’s mouth, Gryphon lifted a brow. He didn’t know why the woman had a rather big reaction to seeing him there. He wasn’t even a celebrity that a lot of people wanted to get really close to.The man just looked away from the black woman and motioned to pick up the child. “Little Highness, let’s get you somewhere safer—”“Ow! Wait, it hurts!” Charlotte suddenly felt pain in her body now that her excitement lessened. She couldn’t even raise her arms to accept the carry. Soon enough, she hugged herself and cried out as if everything she did hurt her. She even shivered from the multiple assaults on her small body. “My back hurts… my chest hurts… I can’t breathe… Help me, Mommy… Daddy… help…”
Ring! Ring! Andrea stared at the phone ringing on the kitchen counter. She was preparing dinner, while Charlotte was drawing on the living floor. However, the TV was on, so the child wouldn’t hear how much Andrea let the phone ring. She didn’t even have a prompt set up to receive a voicemail. When the phone picked it up, regardless, Andrea just heard Gryphon’s voice. [“Andy, pick up the phone. We need to talk. Now.”] His tone was short and commanding, and Andrea didn’t use to hearing it that way. It was as if it was a different person already. However, she also berated herself for not blocking the number. Even if she didn’t have it saved in her contacts, she had the number memorized. She should have just declined the call and blocked it then and there. She just felt like it wasn’t the right thing to do; she
Roxanne knew that Kelsey was supposed to pick up the monster from the prison today. They worked on getting his case dismissed, pining everything on the former president who frame his employees to take the fall for him. Of course, they had to work in the shadows, so neither Gryphon nor Ashley would catch any of them. If things happened, they would be diced into pieces… literally. However, four hours had already passed since Kelsey last sent her a text. Without confirmation of the man being onboard their plan, Roxanne couldn’t help but stay frustrated. It even showed by how she did her daily tasks to seduce the CEO.She waltzed inside the office and brought Gryphon a cup of coffee for the late afternoon. A tray was in her hands, and she placed the cup down on his desk like clockwork. She then looked at the glass wall behind him, hoping that Kelsey wo
Furious knocking came to the door, and it came to a point when the occupant of the room growled in annoyance. She reached out to flip her hair back and press on the phone to make the loud music stop. Slowly slithering out of the person on her bed, she bent down to pick up a shirt to cover her naked body. She also grabbed a hair tie from the side.“Just stay there. Don’t make a sound, or else I will cut your little guy off for real.” She huffed at the fringe she picked from the ponytail to have something to frame her face. There was something sticky between her legs, but she only endured it as she made her way to her condo unit’s main door.“You better be hot SWAT officers or something…” The woman peeked through the hole and saw a furious and puffing Roxanne pacing outside her door. Not knowing what could drive her cous
Andrea also wondered if the truth made her sad. She kept on preparing herself for the time when Gryphon would come to collect her… or even just their daughter. Her new life was built on the assumption that Gryphon would drag her back into his world the moment he found her. However, when it came to it, the man only watched them come and go like he didn’t even know them. Now that she faced the man’s mother, she also heard how Gryphon refused to connect with her anymore. She was the one who left him that night, but why did it feel like she was still the one who lost the most?Did she hope that Gryphon would chase her to the end of the earth? Now that he didn’t, her heart decided to shatter some more. She just offered a smile, which Parker caught in its least visible state. “Not really. I
The aftermath was the worst that ever happened in the last four years of Andrea vanishing. As soon as Gryphon met with his father in the parking lot, Parker stopped them both from leaving. She had a finger knife out, holding up both males in her small family. “Will anyone tell me what just happened? Did we really just see Andy there… and not make a sound?!”“Hon, let’s continue this conversation at home. We drove hours just to get here.” Fred sighed as he knew the mood of his wife. It was as if someone hid a tub of her favorite yogurt and ate all of it without sharing it with her. “Aren’t you tired? I’m tired.”“I am tired! I’m so tired of looking for Andy, yet when she shows up, we do nothing!” She turned her finger at Gryphon’s face. “You did nothing! No ‘hello,&r
