The drugs.Hailey's eyes flew wide and she stilled. The doctor had said something about him not taking his previous drugs. Those drugs she had found out about. Kendrick had been on medication all along. It was still the poison. Realization dawned on her and she jerked up. The doctor's words. Those words from a few months earlier. The doctor had told her Kendrick might come up with relapses because the concentration of the poison was lethal. It had scared her but she hadn't taken it seriously when she saw Kendrick looking all fine and healthy two weeks later. She had taken the doctor's words as just speculations after then. But it was true. Everything was real. The relapses the doctor had warned about. That was his recent illness. Kendrick wasn't cured of the poison. He was still battling with it.Her whole being went numb and her heart stopped beating for a few seconds. Her knees buckled but she managed to hold herself and settle down on the bed weakly. Why did she get into one m
"Hailey." Kendrick's voice sent unknown tremors down her spine and his expression from earlier flashed in her memory. Then he touched her arm and those same feelings returned. The fears that had driven her out of the study room."Are you alright?" His voice came again.Hailey's throat went dry. She couldn't even swallow the lump in it. And she found herself shifting from his touch. No– she found herself running. All her senses at this moment were screaming at her to run. And she must do that before her body could fail her and before she broke down."Hailey, you're shaking."There was a hint of worry in his tone. He withdrew his hand almost instantly and cursed under his breath. The next thing Hailey knew was being lifted off the bed. Kendrick scooped her into his arms until she was sitting. And she was forced to face him and looked into his eyes. She made a futile attempt to push out of his hold. His hands only tightened around her.Kendrick's eyes searched her face, his expressi
The baby. The baby. Everything was about the baby. Hailey felt helpless in his arms and the fears manifested again. To what extent would Kendrick go for this baby? He was even willing to save her reputation at all costs. All because of the baby. It wouldn't be good for the baby to grow up and find out that its father was once poisoned by its mother. It wouldn't be fair. But was it also fair to lie to his parents? "Hailey." Kendrick made her look at him again. "Things are going to be fine. I won't let anyone hurt you with their words. It's okay to feel guilty. I want you to know that I forgive you."More tears. A dam of tears flooded down Hailey's face. He even knew she was feeling guilty about doing that. And he said he forgave her. Why was he doing this to her? Didn't he know his words only reminded her of how cruel she had been? How senseless she was. And how she would never forgive herself."You're not evil, Hailey." His words were meant to soothe and calm her down. "You told me
Urgh, could she even be mad at him if he didn't? She shook her head helplessly."I took them," Kendrick answered in a casual tone. He was still ogling and that smile had returned. "I just did before I came inside."Hailey made an oh sound and nodded. That meant he didn't get to take them on time. That wasn't good. She shook her head again and finished her food. Since he had taken his drugs, wasn't he supposed to be asleep? He should be in bed by now. Were the drugs not taking effect or what? Was it because he didn't take them on time? She avoided his gaze and covered her plate after dropping the juice cup which was now empty. And before she could stand up with the tray, Kendrick picked it from the table and left the bedroom with it. Hailey sat there, astonished for a few seconds. Had he been waiting for her to finish eating? But what was with the ogling? She let out a sigh and wadded to the bed. After laying down, her hands wandered for her pillow and she buried her head in it.
If she focused on eating, it might do something to lighten her mood. When she was done cleaning the plates, she opened the fridge and brought out a large cup of ice cream. She placed it on a counter and sat on the stool in front of it. She drank it carefully, it was too creamy to take with a spoon. And as she drank it, her eyes would go to the door to see if the maids would come in.But none of them appeared even after a few minutes. She didn't even know why she wanted them to come. Maybe sitting alone wasn't a good idea. She could really do with some company. She had to make the maids understand that they didn't need to avoid her. Hailey was still in her thinking process, she hadn't even taken her eyes from the door when footsteps approached. She frowned and her hold tightened on the cup. Because the sounds of the high heels only belonged to one person. It wasn't the kind of company she wanted this morning. She didn't want to face the hypocritic girl. Sharon had really gone overb
"I know you won't." Sharon shook her head and clicked her tongue. "Ken must have denied the fact that you poisoned him. Do you think it is fair to make him lie to his parents? Let me tell you something important." She moved forward. "None of Ken's parents had ever raised their voice on him. But because of you, that happened last night. They were so infuriated, they didn't think about their endless love for him. All they wanted to know at that time was who did that to him. But he didn't tell them the truth." She clicked her tongue again and put on a sad look. "I'm afraid, Hailey. You'll never be the right person for him. You have to leave Ken before you cause more trouble for him. Because this is the first step. It is the first step to break them apart." Hailey's jaws clenched and her knuckles turned white as she gripped the cup. "If I were you, I wouldn't want this. He's the only child they have. I wouldn't like the idea of breaking them apart. Isn't it disheartening to be hated by
And she had watched with her own eyes as he ate them. What difference did that make her from Sharon? If anything, her actions were even worse. Her actions were unforgivable. She remained standing against the wall for a while. If Kendrick hadn't hidden it from his parents, what would they do to her? Were they going to take severe measures and punish her? And why would she even be afraid of their punishment? She had cast it upon herself in the first place. Her feet started to ache and she resumed walking. When she passed by the study room, she halted. And her gaze strayed to the bedroom far ahead. Kendrick was inside the study room. She could hear his voice with the Butler. She didn't want to eavesdrop. She didn't need to do that to know what they were discussing. The Butler's tone was anxious as they spoke. He sounded worried and scared. They were speaking almost loudly. The Butler was warning him about how dangerous it would be if his parents decide to look further into the case
It had been three nights. Since the day his parents came. She didn't go to the diner the next day. He was glad in fact, and he didn't question her why. She didn't also go yesterday, although she looked fine. He had thought she had wanted to spend the time at home. She'd wanted to spend time with him. Maybe she'd changed her mind about resuming work. She would do that later after confirming he was well. But the opposite was the case. She stayed home but avoided him all day. Whenever they'd bump into each other, she would avoid his eyes. He would either watch her from a distance or in the night when they'd go to bed together. Their conversations, however, were always short and forced. She was almost always alone. Not only him but also the servants. She avoided everyone in the house.Unlike a few days ago, her mood had worsened. She only avoided him and not the others. And that was because of whatever Devon had told her. This time around, it was different though. Hanging her head an
