PROLOGUE and Chapter 1
At ten o'clock in the evening, Yza stepped out onto the balcony of the boarding house she was renting. She rested her arms on the wooden railings, feeling the wind play with her damp and very dark hair. She gazed at her surroundings because sleep eluded her, so she chose to stay outside and let the breeze calm her. She glanced at her friend Tiffany, who was sound asleep, and envied her contentment. Yza, with only a year left in her studies, struggled through life. There were times when she thought that if she were just wealthy, her life wouldn't be this challenging. She accepted all sorts of jobs just to support her education and help her grandmother, who was her only family in the world and getting older. Yza aspired to become an accountant, but she felt that her dream was slipping further away with just one year left, due to the hardships. Her gaze wandered to a large apartment building across from where they lived. It was the opposite of their place, built from wood, while this one was made of concrete and impressively large. Rich people seemed to be the tenants, evident from the fancy cars parked there. Her thoughts were interrupted when she noticed someone in one of the units. She observed a man standing on a terrace. She stood upright, squinting to see him in the darkness, and all she could make out clearly was the glow of the cigarette he was smoking. At first, she hadn't noticed anyone because his room was so dim, as if he was conserving electricity. Doesn't he have money? Yza wondered to herself, but she suddenly hugged herself as if she felt that he was looking at her. Is he looking at me? Fear and a shiver ran down her spine because he continued to puff on the cigarette, and the smoke she saw joined the wind. The stranger's gaze was palpable, and they were directly facing each other until he moved closer to the terrace's railing, bathed in the moon's light. She saw his eyes fixed on her, as if studying her intently. Yza couldn't catch her breath. Oh my! Is he Dracula? She quickly turned and rushed inside. She glanced back at the man, and despite the fear and her pounding heart, the man's dark, intense gaze remained locked on her. She could barely make out the face of the stranger, and she had a foreboding feeling that he was a frightening person. She shivered at the man. Who is he? Is he Dracula, like in the horror movies on TV? She swallowed hard. What if he has fangs and bites me... CHAPTER 1 Yza’s footsteps were heavy as she entered the De Lorenzo estate after getting out of the taxi. This was her second time entering the vast house and yard, where the only people around were the servants, bodyguards, and the one and only master of the place, Mister Adamson Rix de Lorenzo, whom she had never seen or even caught a glimpse of in the nearly three years her grandmother had been working there as the housekeeper. Her grandmother never allowed her to visit because her boss was said to be strict and didn’t like strangers around his house. When Yza first came, her grandmother didn’t know, and her employer was away on a trip, so she never saw even a hint of him. She had been excited about his looks because the house helpers there said Señorito Adam was very handsome, though quiet and always serious—so his face was striking. Now, her grandmother was sick, so she had to come. She saw that the main door was closed, so she entered through the side near the dirty kitchen. As she turned a corner, she accidentally bumped into something. “Ah!” she closed her eyes tightly when her body collided with the object, but when she opened her eyes, it wasn’t a wall. It was a man! Yza covered her mouth when she saw the man’s naked body, drenched in sweat but exuding a strong, alluring scent. Can someone really sweat perfume? She involuntarily looked down and saw he was only wearing boxer shorts. His bulging manhood was fully exposed and seemed to be flaunting itself, as if daring anyone to look. What did the models of briefs and boxers in popular magazines say? Nothing. Jesus! She bit her lip out of embarrassment. She had never seen a man nearly naked so close as this. And as to why she looked down—it caused her innocent eyes to look at something forbidden, making her blush deeply. She looked up, almost fainting at the breathtaking sight of him, a perfect stranger before her eyes. His sharp green eyes were captivating. His nose was straight, and his lips looked like they were always ready to kiss or seduce. He had manly facial hair, giving him the appearance of a god from a typical TV series about mythology. So handsome! She wanted to think he was a driver, but no, he was too handsome to be one. Could this be Señorito Adam? My God! He’s so incredibly handsome. No wonder the house helpers’ eyes sparkled with excitement when they first told her about him. She blinked repeatedly, then took a small step back. “S-Sorry.” Yza awkwardly bowed, knowing that what she was about to see in his eyes would surely be the bulge in his boxer shorts, so she focused directly on his eyes. The corner of the man’s lips lifted ever so slightly, so lightly it wasn’t even noticeable, but with it came a mysterious and intense gaze that sent chills down her spine. Yza’s eyes suddenly landed on a woman in a green dress he was with, who was standing by the wall, adjusting herself. She even saw that the woman was wearing panties, and her dress was pulled down to her waist. The woman’s chest was visible as she adjusted her bra, seemingly not caring about the world. There was money on top of a bag placed on a wooden stool—thousands of pesos. Yza covered her chest in shock. What were these two doing in the dirty kitchen, and why did the woman look like that? Were they playing a game of peek-a-boo? “Excuse m-me,” Yza stammered, unable to focus on the woman who seemed completely unconcerned even though her body was exposed. The woman was also sweating and wiped her legs with a tissue, as if something was dripping from her. She shook her head to try and clear her mind but immediately became scared. The man was dangerous, and she was very sure of that. She didn’t even look at the man’s face because of her nervousness and quickly turned around, walking quickly out of the dirty kitchen. The problem was, where could she go? Why were these two doing this outside? Who was that man with the green eyes? Suddenly, her heart pounded loudly, and without thinking, she glanced back at the man, who was still following her with his gaze. When he started walking toward her, she ran quickly toward the front of the house. “Grandma!” she shouted, forgetting for a moment that her grandmother was sick and resting. “Ate Isay! Sis Perla! Sis Cora!” she called out to the servants near the main door. She feared the man might catch up to her and harm her. It felt terrifying. Was that what they called sex? What the two of them did? The woman was naked, and though she didn’t really know how it worked, based on the way the woman’s dress had ridden up and gathered at her waist, it seemed like they weren’t just playing around in the dirty kitchen. She gasped when the man suddenly appeared at the small exit. He was smiling devilishly, and though his smile was faint, she could tell he was enjoying the fact that he had caught her in such a compromising situation. He was incredibly handsome, but he looked like someone who was always ready to kill. His eyes seemed to hide many dark secrets and wickedness. “You want to come inside, Yza?” he asked, his tone flirtatious. His voice was commanding, full of authority. How did this man know her name? She didn’t know him. They had never met, and she was sure of that, but somehow, he seemed to know her name. She nodded slowly, and to her surprise, the door opened by itself as she reached it. She hesitated to approach, but before she could step inside, the woman in the dress from earlier appeared in front of her. “When will be the next, Adam honey?” the woman asked with a grin, walking sexily in high-heeled shoes. Yza looked at the man, whose gaze was directly focused on the woman. Oh my God! This was Señorito Adam. He was a playboy! Without realizing it, she stopped in her tracks, suddenly curious to hear what the man would say. Maybe they were a couple. “No next time. This will be the first and last. You’re paid, now get the hell out of my sight, woman,” he replied firmly to the woman, who was actually very beautiful when seen up close. It was unbelievable—he had just dismissed her right in front of Yza. Yza quickly walked away from the man’s presence, afraid that he might dismiss her the same way he did the woman earlier. It was embarrassing. He had such a bossy, authoritative aura—truly a master in his own right. She realized she needed to figure out her place in all of this. She would surely feel small if she tried to match up to someone like him. She glanced back at him and saw that he was still watching her, so she took larger steps towards the kitchen, where the maid’s quarters were. She had seen that woman before. She couldn’t quite remember where, but she had definitely seen her. Oh, I knew it! The woman was a former beauty queen. She had competed in Bb. Pilipinas two years ago and was crowned Bb. Pilipinas International. No wonder she was so beautiful and sexy—she was a beauty queen. “Yza.” The man’s voice startled her as she froze in place, clutching her bag tighter. Yza stopped walking and tilted her head, still holding onto her bag. “P-Po?” she nervously asked. He stood in the doorway of the dining room, watching her intently. “How old are you?” he asked. For some reason, her hands felt cold. Maybe it was because he was so intimidating and so handsome that, even in a crowd, he would still stand out. He was tall, sexy, and manly, with a fierce yet alluring face that seemed to carry no hint of fear. “I’ll be twenty,” she said, lowering her head slightly. She couldn’t bring herself to look him directly in the eye because it felt like his gaze was so intense that she might melt under it, like metal heated over a flame. “Are you afraid of me?” he asked, his dark brown eyebrows arched. She shook her head while keeping her eyes lowered, but her heart began pounding again when she realized he was stepping closer to her. However, just as he got nearer, Perla, one of the housemaids, appeared behind her. Yza couldn’t help but notice the sharp, almost hostile glare Adam shot at Perla. “Oh, you’re here, Yza. Grandma Eli is in her room,” Perla said, so Yza turned to look at her. “H-Ha? Y-yes.” Yza didn’t know why her speech was suddenly faltering—maybe it was because of the woman she had seen earlier or the sensation of bumping into the sweaty, handsome man. She glanced back at Adam, who was now standing near the table, only about two feet away from her. He was watching her intently, like a predator in a TV show, hiding many secrets behind his handsome, seductive face. “N-You're here, Señorito. I was just about to clean your room,” Perla said, but Adam raised a hand to stop her. “Since Manang Eli is sick, I want Yza to clean my room a little later,” he said, then turned his back and walked away. She stared at the man’s butt as he walked, his movements swaying with his hips, like a model strutting down a fashion show for men. Why does she have to clean his room? She bit her finger as her chest pounded again. What if the man assaults her later? But that’s impossible because the woman who was with him earlier was so beautiful, and he had just dismissed her. Why would he assault her, an ordinary woman, who is poor and only average-looking? “He seems kind of grumpy, Sis Perla,” she said as she held the arm of the older woman, who just smiled at her. “No, he’s not. He’s just quiet. If he doesn’t talk to you, don’t talk to him either because when he’s angry, he’ll definitely shout at you. But if you’re quiet, even if he’s mad, he won’t bother you. That’s just how he is. Just do your part because you’ll be staying here for a long time. Your grandmother’s sick, and it’s a blessing if she can work again in two weeks.” She explained. She just nodded. That was really the reason her grandmother had sent her there. For the meantime, her grandmother wanted her to do the work while she was sick, especially when she got home from school. It didn’t matter to her as long as her grandmother got better, because if the elderly woman passed away, she might not be able to handle it. She wasn’t old yet, only fifty-seven, but the illness she was suffering seemed severe. She planned to take her to the doctor, but first, she needed to ask their señorito if he’d allow it.Yza hugged the bed sheets, curtains, pillowcases, and comforters while standing at the door of Adam’s room, but she couldn’t bring herself to knock.Good grief. Her hands were trembling even though she wasn’t cold. She was nervous, and she didn’t even know why. Why did her employer have such unusual eye color, and why was he so mysterious? Now, her heart was racing. She hadn’t even entered yet, and she was already struggling to breathe, gasping when the door suddenly opened. She tightly gripped the extension rod of the hoover as she made eye contact with her employer, her chest tightening once again when she saw that he was only wrapped in a towel at the waist. She quickly lowered her head. How shameless of him.At first, she wanted to turn around and run away, but she felt like she was frozen to the spot.“Get in,” Adam said formally, easing the door open.Even though she was scared, Yza still followed. He probably wouldn’t do anything bad to her.As soon as she entered, she immediat
Chapter 3Yza caught a glimpse of a woman outside while she was wiping tables in the living room. She heard the voice of a woman shouting, “Adam, you son of a bitch! Get out! You animal!” The woman’s voice was so loud that Yza could hear it despite the mansion’s glass surroundings. It was clear that the woman was angry, given the bulging veins in her neck. Yza swallowed nervously and touched her own neck, feeling as if her vocal cords might snap, not the scandalous woman outside who seemed to have given birth to Satan himself with her string of profanities.“Damn you! You animal! Get out of there! You demon, Adam! Fuck you! You’re a son of a bitch! Son of a slut! Get out!!!” the woman continued to scream, almost hysterical with anger.Yza was perplexed about the woman’s identity and furrowed her brow. She appeared sophisticated but had an extremely sharp tongue, spewing foul language like a sewer. The woman was approaching the open door, and Yza tried to rush to close it to prevent he
CHAPTER 4Yza was walking down the hallway towards Adam's room after coming home from the hospital around six in the evening. The result of her CT scan was okay, and her grandmother needed her attention, so she was going to collect the cash her boss had mentioned. It was likely that the young man had already left since he had mentioned going to another country. That's probably why he left the hospital without saying goodbye, in such a hurry. After that, another nurse came to take her for some tests, and DJ accompanied her for a few hours. They chatted during that time. Then, one of Adam's men came to fetch her. DJ insisted on being the one to take her home, but Adam's employee was adamant about following his boss' orders that no one else should pick her up except for Adam's staff. She wasn't seriously hurt, but, of course, she followed her employer's instructions. Her face was reddened from the slaps she received, and she had bruises on her arms and neck. She acknowledged that it wasn
CHAPTER 5As soon as Yza entered he hallway, she felt like her heart was about to explode when she saw the door to Adamson's room. In the end, she chose to obey orders and follow rather than lie. She nervously bit her finger as she took small steps closer to the young man's room. She took a deep breath when she stood in front of the door before attempting to knock on it. Was it her fault earlier for thinking he had left the country? Apparently, he didn't leave and was doing something foolish inside his room with a woman. And then, they forgot to close the door, so she assumed there was no one inside. Was there still someone inside?"Damn you! This isn't enough! I want more of you, Adam!" She heard the woman's voice screaming, causing Yza to flinch. There was the woman. She didn't immediately hear a response from the person she was talking to. After a while, her employer spoke."But I don't want more of you. Get out. I don't want to see your face anymore. I paid you more than enough f
CHAPTER 6Yza gasped and screamed when something outside Adamson’s room walk-in closet broke. Her heart raced with fear as her hands trembled, especially when another loud noise, as if something was being slammed into the wall, followed. She went outside, clutching Adam’s polo shirts as she hurried out.Oh my goodness! She bit her lip as she saw the center table overturned and shattered. She could clearly see the darkness in his master’s face as he held a chair, seemingly ready to slam it into the wall. Just earlier, she had overheard him speaking on the phone, giving orders, but why was he now losing control like this?Did he have an enemy? She exclaimed, crying as she stood there, afraid that his anger might be directed at her.“Oh!” she screamed, flinching as he aggressively slammed the chair into the wall, shattering it into pieces. His dim, piercing eyes gazed at her, making her knees tremble with fear. His jaw tightened as he stared at her, and she was afraid that his anger migh
CHAPTER 7Yza still couldn’t get what happened to her last night out of her mind as she walked along the school pathway, hugging her bag. She couldn’t understand why she felt so sad because of how Adam had treated her. She didn’t feel regret, but why did she feel so heavy-hearted due to the insult she received? Did she look like a prostitute who needed payment? When she woke up, her master was gone. It seemed like he had left for another country, leaving her with a kiss she would always remember as an insult.“Hey!” Tiffany suddenly appeared by her side. She quickly turned to her friend, who had a big smile on her face.“Good morning, Ms. Brina. Why do you look like you’re mourning on a Monday?” Tiffany teased.Yza examined her friend closely and frowned, “Have you ever been paid after a kiss?”Tiffany was momentarily speechless, and then shook Yza’s shoulders. She was almost dizzy from the vigorous shaking of her friend. What the freak?“Oh my! Did DJ kiss you? Yahoo!” Tiffany scream
CHAPTER 8Yza gave DJ a simple smile as they stood facing each other at the gate of the De Lorenzo mansion. He had picked her up from school and was now escorting her home. Time was getting a bit tight because the group had to practice for their upcoming defense the next day. Due to DJ’s concern for her safety, he had called her to pick her up and make sure she would not take a taxi alone.“I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning,” DJ said to her, gently caressing her cheek as she clutched her Accounting books. She was about to nod when two of his employer’s men, who had a hostile look in their eyes, emerged from the gate. “He’s my friend,” she told them, but they just stared at her.“You can’t pick her up. We’ll take her to her school,” one of them, whose name she knew to be Shelton, said firmly, while the other, named Blake, agreed. Her mouth dropped open at what she heard. She glanced at DJ, who seemed to be getting irritated by the two.“What right do you have to say that? You didn’t ev
CHAPTER 9Yza fell asleep while waiting for the doctor to come out of the emergency room and for DJ to arrive. She immediately reached for her phone as soon as she opened her eyes, but it was no longer in her bag or in her hand."What's going on?" She looked around repeatedly, searching under the chair, but her phone was nowhere to be found.Who would take it? It's an old, phased-out Nokia E51. Why would anyone be interested in her broken phone? What kind of high-class hospital was this, and who would bother with her outdated device? Not far away, she noticed Blake standing and poking at something. Maybe he took my phone. She subtly stretched her neck to see what the man was poking at, and to her surprise, it was an expensive smartphone.Darn it! She slumped into a chair in frustration. She almost accused someone wrongly. It's impossible that he's the thief, given how nice the phone he's using is.But it wouldn't hurt to ask. She got up and walked over to the man leaning against the w
Yza was frozen in her seat when she heard a familiar sweet voice fill the entire function hall after the wedding."I thought I wasn’t ready, For my heart to beat again But suddenly, you came into my life…"She stared at her husband as he walked out from behind the improvised stage. He had said he was going to the bathroom, but here he was, about to sing. His eyes immediately sought her face and then showed a very light but heartwarming smile. She automatically felt very emotional. Who wouldn’t be moved if someone as handsome as him serenaded her in front of everyone on their wedding day at the church? And in fairness, his voice was beautiful. He had a hidden talent for singing, but just like his personality, it was very hidden and hard to reach. And with this Tagalog song, the first words that came out of his mouth seemed to fill her heart with love—love for her and for the two-month-old babies in her womb. Everything was given to her by God. If the challenges they went through were t
Yza furrowed her brow as the taxi driver dropped her off right in front of the condominium where she was staying, after she got out.The condominium across from AD condominium? She only learned the name of that building now, despite having lived across from it for such a long time. She walked inside and the guard greeted her with a smile. “Are you going home here, Ma’am? Not to the other side?” The guard joked, to which she just smiled. What a gossip. When did Adam start living there? Was that the new place her grandmother mentioned where her husband was staying? So, they were right across from each other? She couldn’t help but feel a little giddy at the thought that maybe Adam had been secretly watching her, out of her sight and knowledge.“I’m heading to my husband’s place,” she told the guard and showed her name tag, which he quickly looked at.“Ah, to Sir Adam. Go ahead, Ma’am. He told me that if any beautiful woman comes by, I should let her in right away.” The guard said, but it
53Yza was momentarily stunned by the woman in front of her. Her brain couldn't process the simple instruction the woman had just given her, telling her that Adam wanted her to go to the main building of the company again. What could he possibly need from her this time? She had just come from there. She had also just been here. It seemed like her husband's mind was slowly unraveling."Ma'am Yza?" The woman in front of her called out since Yza had been staring blankly for a while."H-Huh? O-Okay, I'll go," Yza replied, still not fully aware of what she was saying. She glanced at Tiffany as she sang while looking at her computer."Bring back the sweetness of love, let the heart that loves be heard again..." Tiffany sang, her shoulders shaking with the rhythm."Awwooohhh..." her friends joined in, causing Yza to laugh softly before standing up."Do I have to go, Tiffany?" Yza bit her finger nervously. She suddenly felt uneasy, thinking of facing Adam again. It reminded her of when she fi
52Yza went straight to branch five after talking to Adam, but several hours had passed, and her anger still hadn't subsided. She felt like she was going to explode from the mix of anger, jealousy, hurt, and love. She didn’t know why she felt this way, but it was as if her feet were pulling her back to the main building so she could slap him without stopping. She felt that her attempt to throw the vase there wasn’t enough.Frustrated, she bent over the desk and started crying again, so she grabbed her hair in frustration.“Are you okay, bf?” Tiffany asked her from the table across. She was surprised, but Yza shook her head repeatedly.“I’m not okay. It was so wrong for me to go to his office. I was so... disgusted. I’m angry because he didn’t say anything. He’s still closed off to me.” She started crying again and buried her head in the desk, crying quietly.“He doesn’t love me anymore. He thought that money could ease the pain I feel. He doesn’t love me anymore, Tiffany. He loves som
51The taxi window automatically rolled down as it reached the guardhouse entering the ADL Motors building—main branch."guard..." Yza said to the two guards, who immediately stood upright when they saw her face."Ma'am Elyzabeth Alexa," they said in unison, making her furrow her brows. Why did they recognize her?"Go ahead, Ma'am," the man said, so she nodded, though still confused. The driver continued driving into the driveway while smiling. When she got out at the main entrance of the building, she immediately saw a billboard with Adam’s face on it. He had that fierce look. So arrogant, yet so cowardly and childlike in his actions and decisions.Deceptive! Her head heated with anger. As she entered the building, she froze in shock upon seeing her own face on the large tarpaulins around the area. Why was her picture up there? Elyzabeth Alexa Brina-de Lorenzo, CEO of ADL Motors. What kind of nonsense is this? Her eyebrows furrowed, and it seemed like smoke was coming out of her nose
Yza was getting some fresh air on the apartment balcony. It had been months since she last did this, ever since she and Adam got married. Now that she was back in the apartment, she would often step out for some fresh air in the evenings to relax and clear her mind from overthinking.Lately, she's been very emotional and doesn't even know why. Maybe it's because she misses her husband, who seems to have completely forgotten about her.She was starting to fall into deep thought again. She was supposed to be relaxing, but stress filled her mind instead. She missed Adamson so much, and there were times when she wanted to call or text him, but she wasn’t sure if his number was still active. On top of that, she felt embarrassed. She didn’t want to seem desperate, especially since he distanced himself from her.She wasn’t proud, but she was discreet when it came to handling situations like that. She glanced at her phone again. She was looking at the only picture of Adam she had, and once ag
WEEKS passed so fast.Still, Yza was in the process of learning to live her life all alone. She would join Tiffany for meals, who almost always brought groceries, and never missed bringing her favorite imported chocolates. Every single piece of those chocolates reminded her of Adam. The only difference was, they didn’t come from her husband.Tiffany’s boyfriend was quite impressive. Even though they weren’t married yet, he was already spending a lot on her. Yza thought she was just lucky and happy for her friend. Maybe it wasn’t meant for her to be happy for the rest of her life with the true love she had found. She had been staring blankly at Adam’s mansion for a while now, unable to get out of the taxi. She was deeply in debt to her friend because of her daily expenses, including her allowance. What could she ask from her grandmother, who couldn’t work and was also being supported by Adamson? She hoped she could graduate soon so she could take care of her grandmother and support her
When Yza woke up, Adam was already gone. She had expected it, but it still hurt to open her eyes and not see her husband. Her eyes immediately welled up, and tears rolled down her cheeks, but she quickly wiped them away. Her husband was gone, but what remained was the small ache in her heart. Was last night really their last?No one knew. She longed for a lifetime of love in his arms, but she didn’t want to be trapped forever with someone who couldn’t trust the sincerity of her love. Moreover, she was hurt by the revelations he admitted, that he hurt others just to win her, but he couldn’t stand by her.She already knew. Adam had asked her to stay with him only because he needed her, but deep down, he always doubted she wouldn’t leave him for someone else. He nearly tied her down, just to keep her from escaping. But he probably felt guilty when one day, he suddenly declared his love for her.He felt so guilty to tie her in a relationship where there’s no trust because she truly believ
ADAM lovingly raked Yza's body. His eyes were filled with tears at that event in their lives but his grandmother seemed right that he needed to find himself and find where Yza was in him. Pain strikes his chest like lightning, gashing his heart several times. He saw his wife crying silently in pain. Her eyes were closed and she was waiting for him to possess her. He'll get back to it when he's ready and hopefully it'll still be there by then. He has to be strong enough and set his mind, make it ready to accept something positive especially the negative ones. He must learn how to stand in equality. He must learn how to accept failures and not just winning alone. If he is always a winner, he should learn to accept defeat. He finally took it off and kissed it on the lips. He positioned himself in between her thighs and started poking her center with his hard manhood. His hands roamed his body with no tenderness. It was as if it affected every corner of his body. He loves ev
