“I don’t belong here,” Lily said to herself as she stood in the middle of the strangers watching.
It did not feel like her wedding day at all, and she felt as though she was in the midst of sharks as she stared at the wealthy, powerful and influential guests, most of them flanking around Christopher, and totally ignoring her. “Have you ever tasted such power and luxury?” Lily startled as she heard a familiar voice behind her. She turned and saw that it was Emily. “No,” Lily shook her head and said. “Then you should consider yourself lucky that we selected you to be Ashley’s replacement, because we both know that your job would never have gotten you anywhere close to this even in the next decade,” Emily told Lily. “I never wanted this,” Lily reminded Emily. In fact, now that Lily had said her vows, she was even more scared and frightened than she had been when she was kidnapped. “You do not have a choice, dear. Remember that you owe me five thousand dollars every week,” Emily reminded Lily. Lily stared at the woman in shock. Yes, she had mentioned in while they were in Ashley’s bedroom, but Lily hadn’t taken much thought to it, because she just felt the woman was blabbing. “But you and your husband are already on Christopher’s payroll as a result of this marriage!” Lily said in horror. Emily grabbed Lily’s hand painfully in such a way that no one would notice what was going on between them, and besides, no one was even paying Lily much attention to even know that she was being assaulted right in the midst of her wedding reception. Lily whimpered in pains. “How dare you counter me?!” Emily was furious as hell. Her breath reeked of alcohol, making Lily almost want to throw off. Lily was not an alcoholic at all. It was ironical, because she worked at a wine shop, but she had never tasted alcohol. To Lily, she had been keen on living a responsible and moderate lifestyle. “Do you want me to pay your brother a visit?” Emily asked threateningly. At the mention of Joe, Lily shook her head instantly. “No, please, leave him out of this. I will try as much as possible to get five thousand dollars from Christopher for you,” Lily begged. Then Emily smiled and released Lily’s hand. “Good girl. You already have my personal account details. I don’t care how you intend to pull it off, but make sure you never default, otherwise, you would be hearing from me,” Emily said and sashayed away. Then she stopped, turned back to Lily and said, “And remember that this is our little secret, okay?” Lily breathed heavily. She felt as though she would pass out at any moment. Don Grander was already demanding so much from her, that is being their inside snitch in Christopher’s life, which is something that Lily had never done before, and now this? Lily’s head was beginning to pound. She hadn’t taken a single sip from the glass of wine since it was handed to her, and she was grateful that no one was paying her any mind. Lily then decided to go into the restroom to gather herself together after the episode with Emily. As she walked past Christopher and his guests, she noticed a very beautiful, curvy and sophisticated woman beside Christopher. She had noticed her from the beginning of the wedding reception, and Lily did not fail to see how clingy she was to Christopher, and of course, how Christopher just indulged her. “They must be lovers,” Lily said to herself as she proceeded to the restroom unnoticed, or so she thought. She scoffed when a slight pang of jealousy hit her. Christopher had a lover. “Just great,” Lily mumbled to herself. “Not only am I in a fake marriage, I also have a cheating husband to deal with,” Lily grumbled. As she entered one of the vacant restrooms, she heard two girls talking and giggling in the other bathroom. “Christopher Bridger is so hot,” one of them said. “And he is filthy rich. Did you know that he was recently declared the wealthiest and most handsome young man in Mexico’s Newtime Magazine?” The other girl gaped in awe. Lily was also shocked. She honestly had no idea about the man she was marrying, and if Lily was a social media freak, maybe she would know popular details like these, but Lily did not even own any social media accounts. “Ugh, Ashley is so lucky! Gosh, I would be if I woke up as Christopher Bridger’s wife. Damn, he is so hot, powerful and without a single drama or scandal,” the second girl cooed. “Yeah, Ashley is lucky, not you, Lily,” Lily said to herself pitifully. “And I am pretty sure their sex is going to be wild tonight,” the first girl said. Then she whispered conspiratorially, but the walls were thin enough for Lily to still hear, “I heard Ashley is a wild freak in bed,” she said to the second girl. Lily’s heart thundered against her chest. She did not doubt the words of these girls, because judging from what she had known about Ashley Grander in the last couple of hours, she pretty much seemed like that sort of girl. The problem now lies in Lily’s performance. Of course, Christopher would have expectations, and Lily was a pure virgin. “I am truly in a mess,” Lily groaned. “Yeah, I would hit that ass of Christopher if I had the chance though,” the second girl said. They teased themselves and drooled over Lily’s husband, giggled and left the restroom. Now, Lily had more than enough reason to linger in the restroom to gather herself together. Gradually, she was getting a grasp of her new reality, and Lily felt sick already. How was she supposed to live just like Ashley Grander? She already felt differently just looking at her reflection in the mirror. Lily took a deep breath and stepped out of the restroom, but as she came out, she found the woman who had been clingy with Christopher all day waiting for her. “Hi,” Lily said nervously. She did not know how to act around these people yet, and she certainly wasn’t expecting to have a conversation with anyone soon. The woman’s eyes were filled with jealousy and so much hatred that it sent shivers down Lily’s spine. “I am not going to waste any time here,” she said icily as she stepped closer to Lily. “I am only here to warn you, Ashley, that Christopher is mine, so don’t get comfortable in this marriage,” she said and walked away. Lily grabbed the doorknob for support; she was horrified.Lily and Christopher rode in his limousine to their new home. Lily had never been in a limousine before, so instead of staring at the rigid features of Christopher, she decided to fill her eyes with the beauty of the car.She could not understand why he was so upset.“Why are you looking around like that?” Christopher asked.Lily was a little startled at the sound of his husky voice. He was eventually talking to her! They hadn’t exchanged a single word since they said ‘I Do’, and even when they got into the car, Christopher sat away from Lily. Don Grander and Emily told her all she needed to know about whom she would be impersonating for a year, but they failed to tell her what sort of relationship Christopher and Ashley shared before her death.Heck, she did not even know how Ashley died.“What?” Lily asked, confused. She could not meet Christopher’s cold stare.“Why are you looking around the car like that?” Christopher repeated.Lily chuckled nervously. “First time jitters, I guess
Lily started to unpack the moment Christopher walked out of the bedroom. She was still shaken by his last words, but Lily convinced herself that she would have to step up her game of impersonating.“I cannot afford to mess this up. Joe’s life is at stake here, not just mine,” Lily reminded herself as she opened the boxes of clothes. “Why does she dress like a whore?” Lily asked no one in particular as she looked at the endless tons of revealing dresses. She was yet to take off her wedding dress, but thinking about wearing any of these made Lily’s skin crawl.“Do not think much about this, Lily,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “They are just clothes, and you can handle it,” she told herself.Just then, she heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” Lily said without thinking. She knew it couldn’t be Christopher Bridger; he was too arrogant and prideful to knock in his own home.Maggie, the housekeeper entered. “Hi ma’am, I just thought that you might need some help unpacking,” she told L
Lily was still shivering from the threatening call she received from Ashley’s lover, and she did not know what to do. Christopher did not even give her enough time to dwell on it or come up with a solution, because a few minutes after that, Lily found herself in Christopher Bridger’s private jet.“Welcome, Mrs. Bridger, we are glad to make your acquaintance, and congratulations on your wedding,” the air hostess, a young and attractive woman with a deep London accent said to Lily.Lily swallowed for lack of what to say. She instantly felt small and inadequate in her presence.“I am Matilda, Mr. Bridger’s personal hostess,” she went on to introduce herself when Lily looked tongue-tied.“Thank you. It’s nice to make your acquaintance as well,” Lily managed to answer. If Christopher’s air hostess could be this sophisticated, then Lily could only imagine what the other women in his life would look like. Well, from the wedding reception, Lily already had an image of that etched in her head
“Run Lily, run!”The voice called from the distance. Lily stood by the side of the beach, twirling and turning, searching and seeking the direction of the voice.“I can’t see you!” Lily called out.The voice was oddly familiar, but Lily struggled to recall whose voice it was just as she struggled with finding the owner of the voice.“Run! Lily please, run!” The voice called out again, more urgently this time around.Lily looked around frantically, her breathing growing faster and faster. She looked at the large body of water and the waves slapping against the tides. Lily stared in horror.“Take Joe and run as fast as you can!” The voice urged, pulling at Lily. Then it dawned on Lily; it was the voice of her mother. She would never have figured out the voice if she hadn’t mentioned Lily’s brother.“Mummy!” Lily said and ran towards the water. She was certain now that her mother’s voice was calling her from the heavy tidal waves.“Don’t come any closer!” Her mother’s voice became stern
Christopher Bridger sat in the balcony and worked on his iPad. If his members of staff could see him now, they would be bewildered; why the heck was he working on his honeymoon?!But this was far from a honeymoon to Christopher. He knew what this marriage was all about and what was expected of him and now that they were not really in the eyes of the public, there was no need pretending to be a couple in love.Christopher wasn’t married for up to three days and he could not wait for the one-year marriage contract to be over so that he could go back to his life and space, but then again, Christopher’s mind wasn’t even fully concentrated on work; his mind was elsewhere. On his wife, Ashley Grander.“What is going on?” Christopher asked himself. It was early morning the next day and he just wanted to spend this time alone, so he had called the hotel service staff assigned to them for the period of their stay to take Ashley out on a tour. In truth, Christopher could not stand Ashley, and h
Lily stood there, shocked and staring at Christopher like a statute. She hadn’t expected to be accosted by him, because with the way he stood, his hands in his pocket and stared at her with a stern look on his face.“Did you hear what I just said?” Christopher asked.Lily blinked and swallowed. She knew that Christopher was not an idiot, and she had not been impersonating Ashley properly. Half of the time, Lily was freaked out of her mind, and she was barely managing to pull by, because everything was nothing like what Lily was accustomed to.“If you fail, your brother will be killed.” The voice of Don Grander rang in Lily’s head again and she knew that she could not afford to fail. Joe’s hearty smiles, and cheerful laughter, and his impeccable skills in the baseball pitch flashed through Lily’s mind and she became weak.Lily already felt horrible about the death of her parents; an episode that would continue to haunt her all the days of her life, and she could not bear to have Joe’s
Aimee Landon walked into the tall building, her high pair of nude heels clicking against the magnolia floor. Her face wasn’t friendly for a fresh day’s start and that was primarily because she had had a rough night.“Good morning, Ms. Aimee,” the secretary greeted cheerily as she came out of the elevator and proceeded to her office.“Thank you,” Aimee said, straight-faced, and walked past her without bothering to be friendly for a bit. Her foul mood was very obvious, but Aimee did not care. She got into her office and shut the door.Barely two minutes into settling in, Aimee received an email stating that the rest of the board members had a meeting in less than thirty minutes; actually, it was reminder email, but Aimee hadn’t prepared for any meeting, and it was totally unlike her.Something was eating Aimee Landon up and it had something to do with Christopher Bridger honeymooning away in Miami.“I can definitely skip this one,” Aimee said disgustingly. Other days, she would be willi
After the confrontation which Lily felt she handled just fine, because Christopher stopped looking at her like a stranger, Lily went into the bathroom and stayed there for an unhealthy amount of time. The good thing was that Christopher would not be bothering her.Actually, he was not bothering her for one of the things Lily had been worried and nervous about; intimacy.“But how on earth am I supposed to keep up with this impersonation and not get caught?” Lily asked herself in exasperation. She turned on the shower so that the sound of the rushing water would be a distracting noise.“I am supposed to be doing my job at the Top Taste Wine shop, not out here in a luxurious hotel in Miami, impersonating a dead man’s wife,” Lily said as tears brimmed her eyes. Each time she had to act or pretend to be Ashley Grander, Lily felt herself slipping away and she hated it, because Ashley held too any unpleasant secrets that Lily doubted she would be able to hide away for long.Lily heard her ph
Christopher arrived at the company from the hotel in a grand style. He was looking dashing and stunning, and more, he was impressed with what Aimee had come up with in the crunch of time. His company was buzzing with elegance and class, and with everything that had been scheduled to happen tonight, Christopher had no doubt that it would be a successful night for him. The papers he would use in sealing the best deal the company had ever had was with him. However, Christopher was troubled. In all honesty, he had a pretty rough night last time, because while at the hotel room, he kept battling his conscience.“I should have gone home to her,” Christopher told himself.Lately, especially after their intimate affair, he had been unable to get her off his mind, and last night, he regretted allowing Aimee persuade him into sleeping in a hotel home. Christopher had also battled with anxiety and nervousness, and he knew that if he simply wrapped his arms around her, he would have felt better.
Lily stayed in the bedroom and waited for Christopher, but she was downright scared to her bones that something might go wrong and nervous. It was as though the time was ticking by too slowly, but she had no choice but to wait for him in his mansion. However, she was very restless.Lily thought of Don Grander who she guessed must have realized that his papers were missing and would be searching frantically for them. He would kill Lily if he knew that she had taken it, and worse, wanted to show them to Christopher. In thinking of the devil, Don Grander began to call Ashley’s phone, and she jumped in fright.Lily contemplated on not answering the call, but then if she did that, Don Grander might suspect her, because she had never ignored his call before, so Lily took a split second to catch her breath before picking the call. She would have to act normal otherwise Don Grander would know that something was amiss.“Where are you?” Don Grander asked gruffly as soon as the call connected.“
“Monk!” Don Grander yelled at the top of his voice, almost tearing out his lungs. He was in his bedroom, and he paced furiously. Some minutes later, Monk rushed into his room.“Boss, you sent for me,” Monk said, confused, because he was just with Don Grander about an hour ago in the study where they talked at length.“Something has happened,” Don Grander said through clenched teeth.“What might that be?” Monk asked.“Before you and I went out, I was going through the original and fake document that I and Bridger signed before his demise, and the one that Benedict drafted for me which he showed to Christopher to make him believe and succumb to what we want,” Don Grander explained.“Okay…” Monk said, paying rapt attention to what Don Grander was saying even though he was wondering why Don Grander decided to go through the papers in the first place. It was as though Don Grander could read Monk’s thoughts, because he answered right away. “You know that this last deal is very huge; it is t
Aimee threw herself into planning this special event for Christopher and his company. He did not give her the full details, but she worked with what she had anyway. She had been busy contacting vendors and planners, making plans and readjustments; Aimee wanted complete perfection, because this was the event that she was banking on completely. She was fed up of waiting for Christopher to come by, and even though he had reinstated her with even better promotion, Aimee feared that Christopher had fallen for Ashley, and she could not let that happen. After this event, she would have exactly what was hers!Aimee was still in deep thoughts when her phone rang. When she checked the caller ID, it was the new man that she had hired to do her dirty business. The moment Aimee realized that Derek was no longer on board, she had had to find someone else. This time around, Aimee ensured that she went for someone who was fierce and dangerous.“What news do you have for me?” Aimee asked. Now that she
Lily covered her mouth in shock and dreadful fright as her heart slammed against her ribs. At first, she thought that Don Grander was going to hear her gasp, and she feared for her life. If she was caught hiding by the stairs and eavesdropping, she would be dead even before the actual time, but thankfully, Don Grander and Monk were too engrossed in the whole conversation to even hear her.“I just want this to be over and done with so that Emily and I can finally go for that vacation. We have already missed our flight and she is breathing down my neck…it can be really frustrating,” Don Grander said to Monk. Then the two men stopped right close to Lily, making Lily more afraid. She needed to get away from this mansion before they either discovered that she was here, or that the papers were missing. As far as Lily knew, no one saw her come in except the security at the gate, and hopefully, she would be able to get out before Don Grander declares that anything is missing.“When she steals
“What?!” Lily was stunned and afraid and alert. Her mind instantly went to Monk and Don Grander’s threats that they would kill Joe if she failed on any of her tasks.“Yeah, and it was pretty weird. It made me feel uncomfortable,” Joe said over the phone. She could feel the discomfort in his voice, and Lily’s heart broke into more pieces. She even began to wonder how much heartache she could take at once.“I really wish you were here, Lily; I feel safe with you around,” Joe said warmly and sadly. “It has been over a year, and this is beginning to look creepy to me. Even Rudney does not exactly know where you are,” Joe admitted.Lily did not think that Joe would think too deeply about everything. She hadn’t even really been thinking about Joe and how her absence might have affected him. More tears dropped from Lily’s eyes in pain and regret. If only she could tell Joe exactly what was going on, but then again, she did not even have the liberty of brooding about that for so long, because
Lily felt like she had been hit with a ton of bricks at the harshness and cruelty of Christopher’s words, and when she managed to look into his eyes, she could see all the emotions right there.“Let me say what I came here to tell you, please,” Lily begged deeply.“How did you manage to bleed like a virgin when everyone knows that you are not, huh?” Christopher asked bitterly and angrily.Lily opened her mouth to say that it was because she was a virgin, but no words came out of her mouth, and Christopher mistook Lily’s inability to say the words as guiltiness.Christopher shook his head. “You are my worst mistake, Ashley, and I blame myself for not fighting this arrangement when I was told. After this party, you are going to return to your father’s house discreetly until this whole crap of a marriage is over; I never want to see your face again,” Christopher said firmly.Lily squeezed her eyes shut as the words sliced through her heart. She felt like Christopher had literally taken a
Lily could not wrap her head around everything that the old maid had revealed to her.Ashley Grander was alive, and no one knew!A tiny part of Lily was relieved that she was, because after all she had found out about her, it just didn’t sound fair that she would have been murdered. Indeed, she played her game well. Another tiny part of Lily wanted to see Ashley, the only girl in the world that looked almost like her, but according to what the old maid said, Ashley was in a far away country where no one knew her and with a new identity. She was living with the old maid’s distant relative, and to ensure that she is completely safe, she and the old maid had had to keep off communicating.Ashley Grander was smarter than anyone Lily had ever met.Thinking away from her now, Lily thought about herself. As much as she was relieved that Ashley wasn’t truly dead after all the evil that surrounded her, she had been the unfortunate person forced into living her life, doing her job, and cleaning
“What?” Lily was stupefied. She could not believe that she had been played so well, but then again, a lot of questions were already running through her mind. Now, nothing seemed clear and she needed it to be, so she sat back down again.“You knew from the beginning that I wasn’t Ashley,” Lily stated. It was a statement that required an answered, a clarity of some sort.“Even if Ashley was truly dead, I would have known,” the old maid responded. “I raised her, you know,” she started as tears gathered in her eyes. “When her mother mysteriously and tragically passed, she was left in my care, and I loved and nurtured Ashley like she was my child. Do you know how heartbreaking it was for me to see her being constantly maltreated and punished?” The old maid asked.Lily could feel the raw pain in her heart as she spoke, and she shuddered at it.She would never be able to grasp the life of the wealthy and powerful. The more she thought she knew, the deeper the whole thing went. When she worke
