Lily and Christopher rode in his limousine to their new home. Lily had never been in a limousine before, so instead of staring at the rigid features of Christopher, she decided to fill her eyes with the beauty of the car.
She could not understand why he was so upset. “Why are you looking around like that?” Christopher asked. Lily was a little startled at the sound of his husky voice. He was eventually talking to her! They hadn’t exchanged a single word since they said ‘I Do’, and even when they got into the car, Christopher sat away from Lily. Don Grander and Emily told her all she needed to know about whom she would be impersonating for a year, but they failed to tell her what sort of relationship Christopher and Ashley shared before her death. Heck, she did not even know how Ashley died. “What?” Lily asked, confused. She could not meet Christopher’s cold stare. “Why are you looking around the car like that?” Christopher repeated. Lily chuckled nervously. “First time jitters, I guess,” Lily said offhandedly, but when she raised her head and caught Christopher’s confused and quizzical gaze, she realized that she had slipped. Oops! Lily cleared her throat and rephrased. “I meant the wedding…um, wedding jitters. Never been married before, you know…so it just makes me feel and act in a funny way,” Lily rattled on. She was battling to hide her nervousness. Christopher looked at Lily in a scrutinizing manner, and when he saw that Lily kept her head bowed because she could not meet his gaze, he looked away. Lily released the air she did not even realize she was holding when she sensed that Christopher was no longer looking at her. “Phew, that was close!” Lily said within herself. She was terrible at lying, because growing up, Lily had been so responsible that she did not even have to tell lies, because she never got into trouble. “How the heck did I find myself in this situation?” Lily asked herself. In no time, they arrived at the biggest, grandest, and most luxurious mansion that Lily had ever laid her eyes on. Even the ones that she had had a glimpse of during her shifts at the wine shop were nothing compared to this. She had thought that Don Grander’s house was luxurious, but this right here took her breath away. Then she followed Christopher into the living room where all the domestic servants stood, waiting. “You already met Greg, my driver, and the bodyguards outside,” Christopher started the introduction without even checking to see if Lily was following up. “This is Maggie, the housekeeper. Standing next to her is Bab, the doorman. And next to him is Juliet, the house chef,” Christopher said. “You are welcome home, ma’am,” they all said in unison. For lack of the right thing to do or say, Lily just flashed them a bright smile. “Whatever you need is taken care of, of course,” Christopher said to Lily before turning to Maggie, “Get her boxes from the driver,” he told her. Maggie turned and left the living room instantly. “Come with me,” Christopher told Lily in his regular husky yet cold voice. Lily followed like a lamb being led to the slaughter house. Lily would have been awed by the interior beauty and design of the house, but now, she was more worried, because she knew that they were heading to the bedroom. “I heard Ashley is a wild freak in bed.” Lily could not get those words out of her head as they approached the bedroom. There would be expectations, and she knew nothing about sex. “This is our room,” Christopher said as they stepped into a spacious bedroom with a large plush bed. Lily began to panic. “Are you okay?” Christopher asked even though his voice was devoid of any form of concern. “Yeah, I am good,” Lily tried to steady her nerves. “Gosh, I cannot afford to mess this up. Get a hold of yourself, Lily Bashwood,” Lily tried to talk herself out of the panic she was experiencing. After breathing in and out, she felt a little at ease. “Yeah, I am fine,” Lily said for emphasis. There was that look from Christopher again. “Alright, so let us get down to the rules,” Christopher said, but Lily heard differently. “Huh?” Lily asked with wide eyes. “The rules!” Christopher barked angrily and frustrated. “Yeah, sure,” Lily nodded her head, grateful that it was not what she had thought she heard. “We are only married in paper, and the both of us know that this marriage is based off on a contract, so no strings attached whatsoever,” Christopher started. “Okay,” Lily was beyond relieved. “I shouldn’t have to spell it out for you, but I like to be on clearer terms with people to as to avoid mix ups, so in that case, we are to stay away from each other’s business. What I do with my day and time is none of your business,” Christopher said gruffly. Lily’s mind went to the clingy woman. “Is it because you have a lover already?” Lily dared to ask. At first, Christopher was lost. “What are you talking about?” He asked. “I saw the way you two were at the wedding reception…a little too publicly clingy,” Lily said without looking at Christopher. “Oh, you mean Aimee,” Christopher scoffed nonchalantly. “She is just one of my board members, nothing more,” he said dismissively. “I abhor scandals, Ashley, and I know you wallow in it, but for the next one year, I need you to behave yourself, otherwise this contract is off.” “Yes,” Lily accepted readily. She had a lot of things to say and ask, but she sensed that Christopher would not give her that right. “The rule is that while we respect each other’s dignity and image in public, we stay away from each other in private. Is that clear?” Christopher asked. “Yeah, super clear,” Lily answered, all her fears and worries gradually dissipating. Then without warning, Christopher took a few strides towards Lily and kissed her deeply; way different from the one at the altar in front of everyone. “But you just said we…” Lily started to say breathlessly after the kiss, but Christopher interrupted her gruffly. “I only wanted to confirm something, Ashley,” Christopher said. He faced the door and said, “There is something oddly different about you, and by God, I am going to find out. If you and that greedy father of yours attempt to play with me, you will be fucked.” Then he stalked out of the room, slamming the door.Lily started to unpack the moment Christopher walked out of the bedroom. She was still shaken by his last words, but Lily convinced herself that she would have to step up her game of impersonating.“I cannot afford to mess this up. Joe’s life is at stake here, not just mine,” Lily reminded herself as she opened the boxes of clothes. “Why does she dress like a whore?” Lily asked no one in particular as she looked at the endless tons of revealing dresses. She was yet to take off her wedding dress, but thinking about wearing any of these made Lily’s skin crawl.“Do not think much about this, Lily,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “They are just clothes, and you can handle it,” she told herself.Just then, she heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” Lily said without thinking. She knew it couldn’t be Christopher Bridger; he was too arrogant and prideful to knock in his own home.Maggie, the housekeeper entered. “Hi ma’am, I just thought that you might need some help unpacking,” she told L
Lily was still shivering from the threatening call she received from Ashley’s lover, and she did not know what to do. Christopher did not even give her enough time to dwell on it or come up with a solution, because a few minutes after that, Lily found herself in Christopher Bridger’s private jet.“Welcome, Mrs. Bridger, we are glad to make your acquaintance, and congratulations on your wedding,” the air hostess, a young and attractive woman with a deep London accent said to Lily.Lily swallowed for lack of what to say. She instantly felt small and inadequate in her presence.“I am Matilda, Mr. Bridger’s personal hostess,” she went on to introduce herself when Lily looked tongue-tied.“Thank you. It’s nice to make your acquaintance as well,” Lily managed to answer. If Christopher’s air hostess could be this sophisticated, then Lily could only imagine what the other women in his life would look like. Well, from the wedding reception, Lily already had an image of that etched in her head
“Run Lily, run!”The voice called from the distance. Lily stood by the side of the beach, twirling and turning, searching and seeking the direction of the voice.“I can’t see you!” Lily called out.The voice was oddly familiar, but Lily struggled to recall whose voice it was just as she struggled with finding the owner of the voice.“Run! Lily please, run!” The voice called out again, more urgently this time around.Lily looked around frantically, her breathing growing faster and faster. She looked at the large body of water and the waves slapping against the tides. Lily stared in horror.“Take Joe and run as fast as you can!” The voice urged, pulling at Lily. Then it dawned on Lily; it was the voice of her mother. She would never have figured out the voice if she hadn’t mentioned Lily’s brother.“Mummy!” Lily said and ran towards the water. She was certain now that her mother’s voice was calling her from the heavy tidal waves.“Don’t come any closer!” Her mother’s voice became stern
Christopher Bridger sat in the balcony and worked on his iPad. If his members of staff could see him now, they would be bewildered; why the heck was he working on his honeymoon?!But this was far from a honeymoon to Christopher. He knew what this marriage was all about and what was expected of him and now that they were not really in the eyes of the public, there was no need pretending to be a couple in love.Christopher wasn’t married for up to three days and he could not wait for the one-year marriage contract to be over so that he could go back to his life and space, but then again, Christopher’s mind wasn’t even fully concentrated on work; his mind was elsewhere. On his wife, Ashley Grander.“What is going on?” Christopher asked himself. It was early morning the next day and he just wanted to spend this time alone, so he had called the hotel service staff assigned to them for the period of their stay to take Ashley out on a tour. In truth, Christopher could not stand Ashley, and h
Lily stood there, shocked and staring at Christopher like a statute. She hadn’t expected to be accosted by him, because with the way he stood, his hands in his pocket and stared at her with a stern look on his face.“Did you hear what I just said?” Christopher asked.Lily blinked and swallowed. She knew that Christopher was not an idiot, and she had not been impersonating Ashley properly. Half of the time, Lily was freaked out of her mind, and she was barely managing to pull by, because everything was nothing like what Lily was accustomed to.“If you fail, your brother will be killed.” The voice of Don Grander rang in Lily’s head again and she knew that she could not afford to fail. Joe’s hearty smiles, and cheerful laughter, and his impeccable skills in the baseball pitch flashed through Lily’s mind and she became weak.Lily already felt horrible about the death of her parents; an episode that would continue to haunt her all the days of her life, and she could not bear to have Joe’s
Aimee Landon walked into the tall building, her high pair of nude heels clicking against the magnolia floor. Her face wasn’t friendly for a fresh day’s start and that was primarily because she had had a rough night.“Good morning, Ms. Aimee,” the secretary greeted cheerily as she came out of the elevator and proceeded to her office.“Thank you,” Aimee said, straight-faced, and walked past her without bothering to be friendly for a bit. Her foul mood was very obvious, but Aimee did not care. She got into her office and shut the door.Barely two minutes into settling in, Aimee received an email stating that the rest of the board members had a meeting in less than thirty minutes; actually, it was reminder email, but Aimee hadn’t prepared for any meeting, and it was totally unlike her.Something was eating Aimee Landon up and it had something to do with Christopher Bridger honeymooning away in Miami.“I can definitely skip this one,” Aimee said disgustingly. Other days, she would be willi
After the confrontation which Lily felt she handled just fine, because Christopher stopped looking at her like a stranger, Lily went into the bathroom and stayed there for an unhealthy amount of time. The good thing was that Christopher would not be bothering her.Actually, he was not bothering her for one of the things Lily had been worried and nervous about; intimacy.“But how on earth am I supposed to keep up with this impersonation and not get caught?” Lily asked herself in exasperation. She turned on the shower so that the sound of the rushing water would be a distracting noise.“I am supposed to be doing my job at the Top Taste Wine shop, not out here in a luxurious hotel in Miami, impersonating a dead man’s wife,” Lily said as tears brimmed her eyes. Each time she had to act or pretend to be Ashley Grander, Lily felt herself slipping away and she hated it, because Ashley held too any unpleasant secrets that Lily doubted she would be able to hide away for long.Lily heard her ph
Lily knew that she had to do something. When she accepted to impersonate Ashley Grander, she had no idea that Ashley had so many secrets lying with her; secrets that Lily wondered if her parents knew about or not.Hedge had threatened to send the explicit videos to Christopher if she did not call off her honeymoon to go and see him. This was a tricky situation, and Lily knew that she would have to deal tactically with it.“Lily, you can do this. You have been faced with difficult challenges, and you have overcome them,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “You have got this. You know you are doing this for Joe.”Lily swallowed hard, rolled her shoulders and stepped out of the bathroom. Then she froze.Christopher Bridger stood, backing her, and shirtless. She had never seen him in anything other than his pair of suits. Even since they arrived in Miami for their honeymoon, he had been fully and formerly dressed…well, except at nights. Christopher’s back was wide and very muscular, down to
“It isn’t something you should be worried about for now. Just do it, as you have promised. I will send you his code and full name,” she said before stepping out of Christopher’s office and shutting the door quietly before Christopher could say another word. After she left, Christopher was thrown into utter confusion. The Ashley he knew, at least the most that he knew about her, rarely cared about anything in life. The only thing that she was interested in was going to parties, and squandering money, which was why her demand for dates did not quite surprise Christopher. But baseball?Christopher knew without a doubt that betting on a football player, especially during their tournament was a lot of money, and secondly, one had to be really interested in baseball game to be betting on their players, and the fact that she had specifically mentioned a baseball player’s name made him more confused.Again, there was something off with Ashley Grander. One minute she was acting like Ashley Gra
“What?! Why would I do something like that?!” Christopher asked, turning blue.Lily almost burst out laughing, and at the same time, she was very jealous, because Christopher seemed liked he was going to pass out simply because she asked that he demoted Aimee. It pained Lily that he was that attached to Aimee.Christopher might deny all he wanted, but Lily was not stupid. She might be a virgin and a naïve girl who had never had a boyfriend, but she certainly wasn’t stupid; there was definitely something going on between them. At least, Aimee was not denying it, because she accosted Lily right there in their wedding reception, but Christopher on the other hand, would continue to deny it even if a gun was placed on his head, even though he had been caught in almost compromising positions with Aimee. Lily wondered why.If he liked Aimee, and Aimee was obviously crazy about him, why didn’t he just go for her? Granted, he and Ashley Grander were bound by a contract, but Lily knew that a l
“Do you give me your word?” Lily asked.Even though he already said it, she still did not want to take chances. Lily knew that whatever she was asking Christopher for had nothing to do with Don Grander, which meant that if Christopher doesn’t honor his word, she would not be able to do anything to him.Knowing how Ashley was treated by her own father, Lily was certain that even if Don Grander hears of the manhandling, he would not fight for her. Don Grander was a man that would literally stand by and watch his own daughter get tortured without standing up for her, as long as it benefited it. So if he could be that way with his biological daughter, Lily only wondered how he would be towards her, knowing that she was only impersonating his dead daughter.“I have never promised something and gone back on my words,” Christopher said, his breathing harder than normal; he was obviously still affected by what happened.Lily was also worried about Christopher in a way, because there was somet
Lily stood still, unable to move from the spot that Christopher had had her pinned against his wall. She could still feel the pain of his tight grasp on her neck, and Lily was white with fright. He could have killed her right this minute!Lily swallowed hard, trying to fathom what was going on.Before she was plunged into the world of the rich, powerful, and influential, she had never known violence. Her parents had raised Joe and her with love, compassion, and tenderness. They always frowned at Lily whenever she even tried to be a little rough with Joe when they were playing. Whenever they fought, her parents were always quick to create reconciliation between them, and they always ensured that they hugged each other and shared each other’s snacks afterwards. That was why she and Joe shared an unbreakable bond even after the passing away of their parents. Lily would rather die than watch anything happen to Joe. She would protect Joe with her life, and even though she did not live wi
Christopher only recognized what he was doing when he saw the raw look of fright in her eyes, and immediately, he pulled away from her and stepped back. Then he also turned back, unable to look at her as a result of what he just did. If she decided to sue him for violence, he would sink to the ground. It was happening again, and Christopher thought that he would never touch a woman in that manner ever again. He was not a violent man, but women always had a way of bringing out the beast in him.“What did I do?” Christopher asked himself in agony. He had thought that he had been able to do away with this part of his life, and this was another reason why he intentionally stayed far away from women. Aside from the fact that their presence, especially when it was seductive or alluring, made him scared to his bones, he never wanted what happened before now with Nanny Brenda to ever repeat itself. It was the one mistake that Christopher ever made, and he knew that if it ever got out, he woul
Lily had not expected the attack from Christopher, because that was exactly how his question sounded to her, but she was more than ready for him.“I made the choice to,” Lily lied.“Why?” Christopher asked firmly.“Wouldn’t you have been embarrassed that your trophy wife still had indecent things out there for the world to consume? What if bloggers got hold of it and decided to circulate it just to ruin something important for you, huh?” Lily asked Christopher firmly. It might be a lie, and Lily was definitely still in the dark about this issue, because just like other times, Don Grander and Emily hadn’t deemed it fit to tell her that they had wiped off everything about Ashley’s lifestyle from the internet, but this was the only logical and convincing explanation that Lily could think of, and she was certain that this was the exact reason Don Grander and Emily might have done what they did.No one would ever have been proud of the lifestyle Ashley lived, including her father, even tho
Lily had arrived at Christopher’s company with the help of his driver, and she had been awed by how big it was.Now she understood why the city called it one of the most thriving and biggest companies in the city. Lily had never seen anything as huge as this, and she wondered why she had never come to his company until now. More so, she wondered why Christopher had never invited her. Well, judging from how ice-cold he had been towards her, she did not expect anything different anyway. After successfully leaving Don Grander’s mansion, Lily had decided to take her assignment seriously by paying Christopher a surprise visit in his company. It dawned on Lily that she would never get anything done for Don Grander if she just stayed in the mansion as Christopher’s dutiful wife.“Step out of the car for a moment,” Lily had told the driver and bodyguard after they had arrived at Christopher’s company and had parked in the parking lot.Thankfully, the car had tinted glasses, so it was quite
“Come with me, Aimee,” Christopher had said after the meeting was over, making Aimee exceedingly glad.Actually, the meeting had ended a couple of minutes ago, but Christopher had continued discussing with two of the senior associate male staff members, and somehow, Aimee had just found a way to remain in the boardroom. However, she had also been itching to hear from Derek. He had made her slightly uncomfortable with the last conversation that they had before she had gone in for the meeting, and there was nothing Aimee hated than the feeling of a misunderstood task, so she had seized the opportunity to speak with Derek over the phone as she had excused herself and called Derek in the restroom connected to the boardroom. The moment she had come out, Christopher had asked her to go with him.Aimee knew that some of the men, especially the ones who were still unmarried had eyes for her, and were even jealous of her closeness with Christopher, but Aimee never gave them a second look, beca
“Damn!” Derek expressed in awe.It was though Derek was laying eyes on the most beautiful woman in the entire universe, and he was completely enamored. Derek stood right there and allowed his eyes to follow Trisha all the way to her post box. She was casually dressed and had her hair in a bun, but she gripped Derek’s heart already. For years now, Derek had not been remotely attracted to any woman. At first, he had been worried, because usually, he should have craved the presence of a woman, but then again, he had been too busy taking on assignments and digging out dirty information for his clients to even have the time to think about a woman. The only times that Derek ever allowed himself to have a good time was when he went to the bar occasionally to pass time for an hour or two, and most times, those bars were filled with whores; Derek was not a man that got enticed by a woman that any man could have, so he had never given any prostitute a second look. But this woman right here had
