Lily started to unpack the moment Christopher walked out of the bedroom. She was still shaken by his last words, but Lily convinced herself that she would have to step up her game of impersonating.
“I cannot afford to mess this up. Joe’s life is at stake here, not just mine,” Lily reminded herself as she opened the boxes of clothes. “Why does she dress like a whore?” Lily asked no one in particular as she looked at the endless tons of revealing dresses. She was yet to take off her wedding dress, but thinking about wearing any of these made Lily’s skin crawl. “Do not think much about this, Lily,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “They are just clothes, and you can handle it,” she told herself. Just then, she heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” Lily said without thinking. She knew it couldn’t be Christopher Bridger; he was too arrogant and prideful to knock in his own home. Maggie, the housekeeper entered. “Hi ma’am, I just thought that you might need some help unpacking,” she told Lily. Lily wanted to politely turn down the woman’s offer, but on a second thought, she changed her mind. “Yeah, I do need some help,” Lily said. The woman entered the room and began to help Lily unpack. “So what is Christopher like?” Lily asked, and she tried to make the question come off as carefree as possible. Maggie became confused. “Excuse me?” “Oh, um,” Lily was literally caught! “I mean, personally. You would know more about him than I do, right?” Maggie was still confused, so to make Lily look less incriminating, she whispered conspiratorially to Maggie, “You know I travelled a lot, so I barely had time to get to know him,” Lily said. She sounded different in her own ears, but it worked, because Maggie fell for it. She must have really sounded like Ashley Grander. “He is a good employer,” Maggie said stiffly and left it at that. Lily sensed that Maggie was being reserved and conservative with her, but she decided not to push further. It was best not to overdo anything so that she would not be caught red-handed. “Are there any specific outfit you would be taking for your honeymoon, or would you be shopping for new clothes?” Maggie asked respectfully. Lily did not like how Maggie seemed stiff and aloof around her, but then again, she was Ashley to them, and maybe Ashley wasn’t exactly a friendly person to people lower than her social status. “Honeymoon?” Lily was surprised. “Yes, Mr. Bridger did say that you both would be leaving for your honeymoon in a couple of hours,” Maggie said, looking at Lily in a puzzled manner. Lily realized that once again, she must have acted out of character. “Good God, please help me not to shoot myself in the leg,” Lily groaned inwardly. This was way harder than she ever anticipated, but then again, she never thought that she would have to impersonate anyone in her life. “Yes, yes, I know that. I am sorry, it’s just that I have had so much to drink and my mind is all muddled up,” Lily said with a silly chuckle. Maggie opened her eyes in horror. “Excuse me?” For the life of her, Lily could not understand what she must have said that was out of line again. “What?” “Did you just say you are sorry?” Maggie asked cautiously. Damn, another slip! Lily then realized that she would really need to be extremely cautious and intentional about playing Ashley’s character in the lives of people who might have known her. She needed to understand that the personality of a girl born into wealth and luxury was not the same with hers. “Maybe I would need to take a full course on acting like a rich spoilt and mannerless girl,” Lily murmured. “Excuse me?” Maggie did not seem to catch Lily’s words which was good for Lily, because she had not intended for Maggie to hear her. Lily decided that having Maggie around would mean having to cover up slip ups, and she could hardly deal with that right now. “Um, I think I might need to get some rest before we set out for our honeymoon, so you may leave,” Lily tried to dismiss her. “Sure, ma’am,” Maggie curtsied and left the room without protesting it. “Oh gosh, now I can finally have some peace,” Lily groaned. Christopher hadn’t mentioned any honeymoon, but Lily decided that it would be wise to pack up a box of clothes just in case Maggie was right. Lily selected the ones that had any semblance to decency and shoved them into a smaller box. She heard the sound of a ringing phone as she zipped up the box. At first, Lily was confused, but then it clicked that it was Ashley’s phone that Emily handed to her that was ringing. Picking a dead girl’s call felt cringe to Lily, but since no one knew Ashley was dead, she could not ignore the call. The caller’s ID showed Hedge. Lily picked up the call. “Hello?” Lily said. “Hello, Mrs. Bridger. Congratulations on your wedding, finally,” the sound of a male voice filtered into Lily’s ears. “Thank you…” No, that did not sound like Ashley Grander at all. “Yeah, thanks!” Lily said enthusiastically, trying to fit into Ashley’s shoes. “But you didn’t invite me, though,” he said with a hint of mischievousness in his voice. Lily became speechless. Then he laughed throatily. “I was kidding. I know you certainly cannot invite your secret lover to your wedding party,” he said. Lily staggered into the bed. So Ashley had a secret lover! Lily thought of ending the call, but that might not be the right thing to do. “Yeah, so now you can stop calling my phone,” Lily said with a firm tone mixed. It was better she got rid of this Hedger guy now or never. “That’s not possible, love. We had a deal.” He threatened. “Then I have called it off,” Lily said even though he voice was beginning to shake. Hedge laughed dangerously. “Ash, you know me too well to play games with me. You owe me money from the rich dude’s wallet, and of course, our endless romantic relationship,” Hedge reminded Lily. Lily’s eyeballs almost came out of their sockets in horror. “Hell no!” she yelled into the phone. “Check your phone, and tell me if you would like to cross me,” Hedge said and ended the call. Lily struggled to operate Ashley’s iPhone, but she eventually got hold of Hedge’s message to Ashley. It was a sex video of Ashley and Hedge, followed by a threatening message. “Go back on our agreement and your fancy husband gets to see the video.”Lily was still shivering from the threatening call she received from Ashley’s lover, and she did not know what to do. Christopher did not even give her enough time to dwell on it or come up with a solution, because a few minutes after that, Lily found herself in Christopher Bridger’s private jet.“Welcome, Mrs. Bridger, we are glad to make your acquaintance, and congratulations on your wedding,” the air hostess, a young and attractive woman with a deep London accent said to Lily.Lily swallowed for lack of what to say. She instantly felt small and inadequate in her presence.“I am Matilda, Mr. Bridger’s personal hostess,” she went on to introduce herself when Lily looked tongue-tied.“Thank you. It’s nice to make your acquaintance as well,” Lily managed to answer. If Christopher’s air hostess could be this sophisticated, then Lily could only imagine what the other women in his life would look like. Well, from the wedding reception, Lily already had an image of that etched in her head
“Run Lily, run!”The voice called from the distance. Lily stood by the side of the beach, twirling and turning, searching and seeking the direction of the voice.“I can’t see you!” Lily called out.The voice was oddly familiar, but Lily struggled to recall whose voice it was just as she struggled with finding the owner of the voice.“Run! Lily please, run!” The voice called out again, more urgently this time around.Lily looked around frantically, her breathing growing faster and faster. She looked at the large body of water and the waves slapping against the tides. Lily stared in horror.“Take Joe and run as fast as you can!” The voice urged, pulling at Lily. Then it dawned on Lily; it was the voice of her mother. She would never have figured out the voice if she hadn’t mentioned Lily’s brother.“Mummy!” Lily said and ran towards the water. She was certain now that her mother’s voice was calling her from the heavy tidal waves.“Don’t come any closer!” Her mother’s voice became stern
Christopher Bridger sat in the balcony and worked on his iPad. If his members of staff could see him now, they would be bewildered; why the heck was he working on his honeymoon?!But this was far from a honeymoon to Christopher. He knew what this marriage was all about and what was expected of him and now that they were not really in the eyes of the public, there was no need pretending to be a couple in love.Christopher wasn’t married for up to three days and he could not wait for the one-year marriage contract to be over so that he could go back to his life and space, but then again, Christopher’s mind wasn’t even fully concentrated on work; his mind was elsewhere. On his wife, Ashley Grander.“What is going on?” Christopher asked himself. It was early morning the next day and he just wanted to spend this time alone, so he had called the hotel service staff assigned to them for the period of their stay to take Ashley out on a tour. In truth, Christopher could not stand Ashley, and h
Lily stood there, shocked and staring at Christopher like a statute. She hadn’t expected to be accosted by him, because with the way he stood, his hands in his pocket and stared at her with a stern look on his face.“Did you hear what I just said?” Christopher asked.Lily blinked and swallowed. She knew that Christopher was not an idiot, and she had not been impersonating Ashley properly. Half of the time, Lily was freaked out of her mind, and she was barely managing to pull by, because everything was nothing like what Lily was accustomed to.“If you fail, your brother will be killed.” The voice of Don Grander rang in Lily’s head again and she knew that she could not afford to fail. Joe’s hearty smiles, and cheerful laughter, and his impeccable skills in the baseball pitch flashed through Lily’s mind and she became weak.Lily already felt horrible about the death of her parents; an episode that would continue to haunt her all the days of her life, and she could not bear to have Joe’s
Aimee Landon walked into the tall building, her high pair of nude heels clicking against the magnolia floor. Her face wasn’t friendly for a fresh day’s start and that was primarily because she had had a rough night.“Good morning, Ms. Aimee,” the secretary greeted cheerily as she came out of the elevator and proceeded to her office.“Thank you,” Aimee said, straight-faced, and walked past her without bothering to be friendly for a bit. Her foul mood was very obvious, but Aimee did not care. She got into her office and shut the door.Barely two minutes into settling in, Aimee received an email stating that the rest of the board members had a meeting in less than thirty minutes; actually, it was reminder email, but Aimee hadn’t prepared for any meeting, and it was totally unlike her.Something was eating Aimee Landon up and it had something to do with Christopher Bridger honeymooning away in Miami.“I can definitely skip this one,” Aimee said disgustingly. Other days, she would be willi
After the confrontation which Lily felt she handled just fine, because Christopher stopped looking at her like a stranger, Lily went into the bathroom and stayed there for an unhealthy amount of time. The good thing was that Christopher would not be bothering her.Actually, he was not bothering her for one of the things Lily had been worried and nervous about; intimacy.“But how on earth am I supposed to keep up with this impersonation and not get caught?” Lily asked herself in exasperation. She turned on the shower so that the sound of the rushing water would be a distracting noise.“I am supposed to be doing my job at the Top Taste Wine shop, not out here in a luxurious hotel in Miami, impersonating a dead man’s wife,” Lily said as tears brimmed her eyes. Each time she had to act or pretend to be Ashley Grander, Lily felt herself slipping away and she hated it, because Ashley held too any unpleasant secrets that Lily doubted she would be able to hide away for long.Lily heard her ph
Lily knew that she had to do something. When she accepted to impersonate Ashley Grander, she had no idea that Ashley had so many secrets lying with her; secrets that Lily wondered if her parents knew about or not.Hedge had threatened to send the explicit videos to Christopher if she did not call off her honeymoon to go and see him. This was a tricky situation, and Lily knew that she would have to deal tactically with it.“Lily, you can do this. You have been faced with difficult challenges, and you have overcome them,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “You have got this. You know you are doing this for Joe.”Lily swallowed hard, rolled her shoulders and stepped out of the bathroom. Then she froze.Christopher Bridger stood, backing her, and shirtless. She had never seen him in anything other than his pair of suits. Even since they arrived in Miami for their honeymoon, he had been fully and formerly dressed…well, except at nights. Christopher’s back was wide and very muscular, down to
In less than an hour, Lily and Christopher were already flying out of Miami. “Did you enjoy your seat?” Matilda tried to be friendly when they entered the plane.Lily intended to be friendly to her, but from the corner of her eyes, she noticed Christopher was watching her, and he was boiling with anger, and for the life of her, she could not understand why he was so upset. This wasn’t a proper honeymoon, and Christopher did not even step out of the hotel the entire time, and Lily could not fathom why that was so. So Lily only nodded slightly, and when Matilda realized that Lily wouldn’t be paying her any mind, she left feeling embarrassed. Lily was sincerely sorry to have treated a harmless and friendly person, but there was nothing else that she could do. Lily decided to forget about her and concentrate on what Christopher had told her.“Be prepared to feed the media and paparazzi…”Lily was already exhausted from living Ashley’s life, and now she wondered what she was supposed to
“What?!” Lily was stunned and afraid and alert. Her mind instantly went to Monk and Don Grander’s threats that they would kill Joe if she failed on any of her tasks.“Yeah, and it was pretty weird. It made me feel uncomfortable,” Joe said over the phone. She could feel the discomfort in his voice, and Lily’s heart broke into more pieces. She even began to wonder how much heartache she could take at once.“I really wish you were here, Lily; I feel safe with you around,” Joe said warmly and sadly. “It has been over a year, and this is beginning to look creepy to me. Even Rudney does not exactly know where you are,” Joe admitted.Lily did not think that Joe would think too deeply about everything. She hadn’t even really been thinking about Joe and how her absence might have affected him. More tears dropped from Lily’s eyes in pain and regret. If only she could tell Joe exactly what was going on, but then again, she did not even have the liberty of brooding about that for so long, because
Lily felt like she had been hit with a ton of bricks at the harshness and cruelty of Christopher’s words, and when she managed to look into his eyes, she could see all the emotions right there.“Let me say what I came here to tell you, please,” Lily begged deeply.“How did you manage to bleed like a virgin when everyone knows that you are not, huh?” Christopher asked bitterly and angrily.Lily opened her mouth to say that it was because she was a virgin, but no words came out of her mouth, and Christopher mistook Lily’s inability to say the words as guiltiness.Christopher shook his head. “You are my worst mistake, Ashley, and I blame myself for not fighting this arrangement when I was told. After this party, you are going to return to your father’s house discreetly until this whole crap of a marriage is over; I never want to see your face again,” Christopher said firmly.Lily squeezed her eyes shut as the words sliced through her heart. She felt like Christopher had literally taken a
Lily could not wrap her head around everything that the old maid had revealed to her.Ashley Grander was alive, and no one knew!A tiny part of Lily was relieved that she was, because after all she had found out about her, it just didn’t sound fair that she would have been murdered. Indeed, she played her game well. Another tiny part of Lily wanted to see Ashley, the only girl in the world that looked almost like her, but according to what the old maid said, Ashley was in a far away country where no one knew her and with a new identity. She was living with the old maid’s distant relative, and to ensure that she is completely safe, she and the old maid had had to keep off communicating.Ashley Grander was smarter than anyone Lily had ever met.Thinking away from her now, Lily thought about herself. As much as she was relieved that Ashley wasn’t truly dead after all the evil that surrounded her, she had been the unfortunate person forced into living her life, doing her job, and cleaning
“What?” Lily was stupefied. She could not believe that she had been played so well, but then again, a lot of questions were already running through her mind. Now, nothing seemed clear and she needed it to be, so she sat back down again.“You knew from the beginning that I wasn’t Ashley,” Lily stated. It was a statement that required an answered, a clarity of some sort.“Even if Ashley was truly dead, I would have known,” the old maid responded. “I raised her, you know,” she started as tears gathered in her eyes. “When her mother mysteriously and tragically passed, she was left in my care, and I loved and nurtured Ashley like she was my child. Do you know how heartbreaking it was for me to see her being constantly maltreated and punished?” The old maid asked.Lily could feel the raw pain in her heart as she spoke, and she shuddered at it.She would never be able to grasp the life of the wealthy and powerful. The more she thought she knew, the deeper the whole thing went. When she worke
After Lily left Don Grander’s house, she could not afford to go back to Christopher’s mansion. There was still Hedge’s threat hanging over her head, but now, even Christopher’s life, reputation, and company are at stake here.Lily did not want anything to happen to Christopher Bridger at all. Then something struck Lily; to use Ashley’s phone to get across to the old maid! Why didn’t she even think of that all this while? She could not believe that she had allowed something as helpful as that escape her memory. She did not have enough time now, as the weekend event is just a few weeks away. Lily knew that Hedge wasn’t joking when he made a threat to Christopher’s life, because if he could release the sex video he had of Ashley, then he could certainly try to kill Christopher. The thought of it sent shivers down Lily’s spine.Thankfully, the old maid’s phone rang, and Lily waited with desperate anticipation for her to pick up.“Please pick up. Please pick up,” Lily prayed, and eventuall
Lily could not stop thinking about what she read and the possibility of what might be. The thought of it made her really scared and confused. Was Ashley’s body found? What truly happened that made Don Grander and Emily believe that their daughter was dead? These questions disturbed Lily’s mind as Christopher’s driver drove her to Don Grander’s house. She would have loved to ask Don Grander these questions, but she knew him too well now. She knew that talking to him about it would raise suspicions, and if it did, he might want to get rid of her. The only person that Lily could have been able to ask without fear was the old maid, but she had been fired, and Lily did not know where to find her.“I have to find her by every means possible,” Lily told herself.Don Grander had to be the worst parent that Lily had ever known. How could a man treat his own daughter like that? Lily’s father might be dead, but when he was alive, he loved, provided for, and fiercely protected their mother along
Lily went to the guestroom and pondered greatly. So after everything, Christopher meant it when he said he was going to reinstate Aimee, and not just that, he had picked her to plan an event as important as this one.Lily knew how important this was to Christopher, because she went with him on the business trip and she knew everything that happened there…or almost everything, and yet, it was Aimee Landon he chose.“What is it with him and Aimee?” Lily asked herself. She was frustrated, but she was downright jealous. Lily’s heart ached just thinking about it, and now, tears filled her eyes. She would never mean anything to a man like Christopher Bridger, whether as Ashley Grander or Lily Bashwood. Deep down, Lily wished that Christopher would at least like her, that is Bashwood’s daughter, but that was only a wild dream.Unfortunately, when Lily wasn’t even hoping to, she had fallen for Christopher Bridger. Why wouldn’t she fall in love with him? Christopher was the only man aside from
Lily woke up in a different mood; Hedge’s threat was still hanging over her head, and she did not know the right approach to it, and then there was this business thing that Christopher asked her to get prepared for.Lily did not want to be a part of it whatsoever, majorly because of the presence of Mr. Yang, but she really did not have a choice. Ever since Don Grander kidnapped her and forced her into this life, she had not done anything of her own volition. Maybe she would just find something a little fitting and throw on, because her mind wasn’t really on it, or maybe she would feign sickness on that day to excuse her from attending. The landline in Christopher’s house rang, and Lily wondered if she should pick or not. It barely ever rang, so she could hardly tell. At the end of the day, Lily decided to ignore it, because she did not want to mess things up for Christopher, just in case she wasn’t supposed to take the call.A few minutes after the landline stopped ringing, Ashley’s p
“Miss Aimee, your attention is required in the boardroom,” Christopher’s new secretary said to Aimee.Aimee had arrived at work in a jolly mood, certain that she had been able to manage every situation to the best of her knowledge. She was not even bothered about Derek, because she knew that he would be so busy fighting to win Trisha’s love back to even think of him.“Such an asshole,” Aimee cussed. “Who the heck falls in love with someone they ought to have killed?” Aimee scoffed. She should have known that Derek was incapable of tasks such as the ones she required of him. Anyway, Aimee was thinking about finding a more capable person that would carry out tasks without questions, delay, or even falling in love, when she got the message.“In the boardroom, right now?” Aimee asked, wanting to be sure if she heard correctly. Since Christopher demoted her without a conscience, she had not been asked to come to the boardroom, knowing that only the senior staff members were allowed in ther
