“My name is Ashley Grander. I am twenty six years old. I have an interesting personality and my hubbies include partying, going on vacations, painting when I feel like it, and casually enjoying a glass of Mojito in the beach.”
Lily’s hand shook as she held the paper and read through her new personality for the umpteenth time. She hadn’t slept a wink the entire night, and it was almost morning. “Take that again. You have to master it so that you don’t make any mistakes,” Emily told Lily. “And for the love of Christ, stop fidgeting!” Lily swallowed again and tried to steady her hand. None of them in the room had slept at all. “My name is Ashley Grander. I am twenty six years old…” “What did you do on your twenty-fifth birthday last year?” Don Grander interrupted Lily impatiently. Lily tried to remember what she had read that Ashley had done. “I went skiing in Vermont, and after that, I travelled for a girl’s trip to Venice,” Lily answered, hoping to God that she was right. The one-eyed man still had that revolver. “Great!” Don clapped his hands, impressed. “Makes everything even better since she is smart as heck,” he said. “Well, the hair stylist would be here in a few minutes, so we need to hurry up with the last of the rehearsals,” Emily said grudgingly. For the life of Lily, she could not understand why they could not tell this Christopher guy that their daughter was dead, or maybe he was an old frail ugly looking man whom they were indebted to in a way, but either ways, thinking about it made Lily cringe. They had forced Lily into making a call to her brother and her boss at work with a convincing lie so as not to arouse any form of suspicions. “Who are your parents and why are you getting married to Christopher Bridger?” Don Grander asked Lily. “Um, Don Grander and Emily Torres are my parents, and I am getting married to Christopher Bridger so that I could help my parents secure his empire for them,” Lily swallowed as she rolled out the words from her head. She felt like a prick already. “You are smart, and I like that,” Don said again and Emily rolled her eyes. “Here, this is Ashley’s phone which you would be using from now on,” Don said and gave Lily an iPhone. They had already taken Lily’s phone from her and switched it off. “That life of yours is dead and gone until after a year,” they had informed her. Lily then followed Emily into Ashley’s room to get started with getting dressed as it was morning already. It took every ounce of self-control in Lily not to gasp at the beauty of Ashley’s room. It was obvious that the girl she would be impersonating had enjoyed nothing short of luxury and comfort, unlike Lily who had had to scrape bones in search of flesh, just so that she and her baby brother could survive. “Take a look at her wardrobe and get yourself acquainted with her stuff before your stylist gets here,” Emily said. Lily noticed that she was not exactly a friendly woman, but then again, Lily had other things to worry about other than Emily’s niceness. Lily was still wondering why the couple did not seem mournful that they had lost a daughter as she went over to Ashley’s wardrobe. Everything screamed designers, and ironically, they both had the same sizes of everything – clothes, shoes, bra, even undies, but unfortunately, their taste differed completely. “I cannot wear these. They are too revealing!” Lily shook her head as she stared at dozens and thousands of skimpy and indecent clothes. Emily walked over to her and said, “You keep forgetting that you do not have a choice. You should be lucky that you will get to spend one entire year with the Christopher Bridger.” With that, Lily kept mute. In the next couple of hours, Lily’s wavy golden hair was dyed into Ashley’s wavy auburn hair, and she was wearing Ashley’s wedding dress. Tears welled up in Lily’s eyes, but she knew that it was useless to cry now, because there was nothing that could be done. As Lily followed Don Grander and Emily to the wedding venue, she knew that her life was about to be turned upside down. “You cannot fuck this up, or you and your brother are dead meat,” Don Grander gave Lily one last doze of threat. As Don Grander held Lily’s hand and walked her down the aisle towards her groom, Lily did not expect to see a dashing well-built groom for a husband. Christopher Bridger was the most handsome man that she had ever seen. But as Don Grander delivered Lily to him at the altar, there was a coldness and ruthlessness in his eyes, so much so that Lily felt instantly that she had just gone from frying pan to fire. “Do you, Ashley Grander accept Christopher Bridger as your lawfully wedded husband?” The Priest asked Lily. “Yes, yes, I do,” Lily answered. She could not afford to fuck this up, and she needed to always remember that. For the sake of her brother’s life, Lily would cross oceans and walk through fire, so if she closed her eyes long enough, she would be able to endure one year with a total stranger. “Do you, Christopher Bridger take Ashley Grander as your wife, to love and to hold, to protect and to love?” The priest asked Christopher. “Yes, I do,” Christopher answered huskily and coldly. “I now pronounce you man and wife,” the priest announced and a round of applause erupted from the few guests seated in the hall. “You may now kiss your bride,” he told Christopher and Lily. Lily closed her eyes and waited for her to be kissed for the first time in her entire life. As Christopher’s lips joined to hers briefly, Lily opened her eyes and stared at him. Although she had no prior experience, she felt nothing at all. Lily stared at Christopher’s icy demeanor and felt sorry for herself. She was a wife now.“I don’t belong here,” Lily said to herself as she stood in the middle of the strangers watching. It did not feel like her wedding day at all, and she felt as though she was in the midst of sharks as she stared at the wealthy, powerful and influential guests, most of them flanking around Christopher, and totally ignoring her.“Have you ever tasted such power and luxury?” Lily startled as she heard a familiar voice behind her. She turned and saw that it was Emily.“No,” Lily shook her head and said.“Then you should consider yourself lucky that we selected you to be Ashley’s replacement, because we both know that your job would never have gotten you anywhere close to this even in the next decade,” Emily told Lily.“I never wanted this,” Lily reminded Emily. In fact, now that Lily had said her vows, she was even more scared and frightened than she had been when she was kidnapped.“You do not have a choice, dear. Remember that you owe me five thousand dollars every week,” Emily reminde
Lily and Christopher rode in his limousine to their new home. Lily had never been in a limousine before, so instead of staring at the rigid features of Christopher, she decided to fill her eyes with the beauty of the car.She could not understand why he was so upset.“Why are you looking around like that?” Christopher asked.Lily was a little startled at the sound of his husky voice. He was eventually talking to her! They hadn’t exchanged a single word since they said ‘I Do’, and even when they got into the car, Christopher sat away from Lily. Don Grander and Emily told her all she needed to know about whom she would be impersonating for a year, but they failed to tell her what sort of relationship Christopher and Ashley shared before her death.Heck, she did not even know how Ashley died.“What?” Lily asked, confused. She could not meet Christopher’s cold stare.“Why are you looking around the car like that?” Christopher repeated.Lily chuckled nervously. “First time jitters, I guess
Lily started to unpack the moment Christopher walked out of the bedroom. She was still shaken by his last words, but Lily convinced herself that she would have to step up her game of impersonating.“I cannot afford to mess this up. Joe’s life is at stake here, not just mine,” Lily reminded herself as she opened the boxes of clothes. “Why does she dress like a whore?” Lily asked no one in particular as she looked at the endless tons of revealing dresses. She was yet to take off her wedding dress, but thinking about wearing any of these made Lily’s skin crawl.“Do not think much about this, Lily,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “They are just clothes, and you can handle it,” she told herself.Just then, she heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” Lily said without thinking. She knew it couldn’t be Christopher Bridger; he was too arrogant and prideful to knock in his own home.Maggie, the housekeeper entered. “Hi ma’am, I just thought that you might need some help unpacking,” she told L
Lily was still shivering from the threatening call she received from Ashley’s lover, and she did not know what to do. Christopher did not even give her enough time to dwell on it or come up with a solution, because a few minutes after that, Lily found herself in Christopher Bridger’s private jet.“Welcome, Mrs. Bridger, we are glad to make your acquaintance, and congratulations on your wedding,” the air hostess, a young and attractive woman with a deep London accent said to Lily.Lily swallowed for lack of what to say. She instantly felt small and inadequate in her presence.“I am Matilda, Mr. Bridger’s personal hostess,” she went on to introduce herself when Lily looked tongue-tied.“Thank you. It’s nice to make your acquaintance as well,” Lily managed to answer. If Christopher’s air hostess could be this sophisticated, then Lily could only imagine what the other women in his life would look like. Well, from the wedding reception, Lily already had an image of that etched in her head
“Run Lily, run!”The voice called from the distance. Lily stood by the side of the beach, twirling and turning, searching and seeking the direction of the voice.“I can’t see you!” Lily called out.The voice was oddly familiar, but Lily struggled to recall whose voice it was just as she struggled with finding the owner of the voice.“Run! Lily please, run!” The voice called out again, more urgently this time around.Lily looked around frantically, her breathing growing faster and faster. She looked at the large body of water and the waves slapping against the tides. Lily stared in horror.“Take Joe and run as fast as you can!” The voice urged, pulling at Lily. Then it dawned on Lily; it was the voice of her mother. She would never have figured out the voice if she hadn’t mentioned Lily’s brother.“Mummy!” Lily said and ran towards the water. She was certain now that her mother’s voice was calling her from the heavy tidal waves.“Don’t come any closer!” Her mother’s voice became stern
Christopher Bridger sat in the balcony and worked on his iPad. If his members of staff could see him now, they would be bewildered; why the heck was he working on his honeymoon?!But this was far from a honeymoon to Christopher. He knew what this marriage was all about and what was expected of him and now that they were not really in the eyes of the public, there was no need pretending to be a couple in love.Christopher wasn’t married for up to three days and he could not wait for the one-year marriage contract to be over so that he could go back to his life and space, but then again, Christopher’s mind wasn’t even fully concentrated on work; his mind was elsewhere. On his wife, Ashley Grander.“What is going on?” Christopher asked himself. It was early morning the next day and he just wanted to spend this time alone, so he had called the hotel service staff assigned to them for the period of their stay to take Ashley out on a tour. In truth, Christopher could not stand Ashley, and h
Lily stood there, shocked and staring at Christopher like a statute. She hadn’t expected to be accosted by him, because with the way he stood, his hands in his pocket and stared at her with a stern look on his face.“Did you hear what I just said?” Christopher asked.Lily blinked and swallowed. She knew that Christopher was not an idiot, and she had not been impersonating Ashley properly. Half of the time, Lily was freaked out of her mind, and she was barely managing to pull by, because everything was nothing like what Lily was accustomed to.“If you fail, your brother will be killed.” The voice of Don Grander rang in Lily’s head again and she knew that she could not afford to fail. Joe’s hearty smiles, and cheerful laughter, and his impeccable skills in the baseball pitch flashed through Lily’s mind and she became weak.Lily already felt horrible about the death of her parents; an episode that would continue to haunt her all the days of her life, and she could not bear to have Joe’s
Aimee Landon walked into the tall building, her high pair of nude heels clicking against the magnolia floor. Her face wasn’t friendly for a fresh day’s start and that was primarily because she had had a rough night.“Good morning, Ms. Aimee,” the secretary greeted cheerily as she came out of the elevator and proceeded to her office.“Thank you,” Aimee said, straight-faced, and walked past her without bothering to be friendly for a bit. Her foul mood was very obvious, but Aimee did not care. She got into her office and shut the door.Barely two minutes into settling in, Aimee received an email stating that the rest of the board members had a meeting in less than thirty minutes; actually, it was reminder email, but Aimee hadn’t prepared for any meeting, and it was totally unlike her.Something was eating Aimee Landon up and it had something to do with Christopher Bridger honeymooning away in Miami.“I can definitely skip this one,” Aimee said disgustingly. Other days, she would be willi
While Lily waited for Emily to come, because she knew that as long as it involved money, Emily would stick to her words, Lily racked her head on how she could send the money to Hedge. The last thing Lily wanted was for him to call her first, because if he did, he would start demanding for a freaking affair.“What kind of lifestyle did you live, Ashley?” Lily asked. If Hedge was asking for an affair, it means that Ashley was very capable of having an affair, and that was not something Lily could do, no matter how well she had been asked to impersonate Ashley. The mere thought of Hedge running his hands over Lily’s body literally made her skin crawl, talk more of having a full blown affair with him.About an hour later, after Lily had showered and changed into something nice but a little casual, she heard a soft knock on the door.“Who is that?” Lily asked.“It is Maggie,” Maggie’s voice floated from the other side of the door. “May I come in?” Maggie asked.“Yes,” Lily simply answered
Lily looked at the money as her mouth dropped open. This was the biggest amount of money she was seeing, and it was just lying there in the first drawer that she checked. Lily could bet that if she checked other parts of the room, she might find out that he had stashed money everywhere.“He is probably richer than I thought,” Lily said to herself.Without wasting time, Lily took some bundles of dollars from the money and left Christopher’s bedroom. When she got to her room, she began to feel like shit, because this would be the first time she would be stealing, but there was nothing she could do.“I was left with no choice,” Lily said.It did not make her feel any better, but it certainly gave her a reason why she took it. Now, Lily was left with two worries; how to send the money to both Don Grander and Emily; she was grounded, and therefore, not allowed to step foot out of the house, and Hedge, and her second worry was what would happen if Christopher returned and discovered that hi
Lily woke up just as early as Christopher so that he would not go to work without getting some money from him. The threats coming from Don Grander and Hedge were getting too much, and Lily was scared that Don Grander would pull through with his and hurt her baby brother, Joe.They weren’t sleeping in the same room, so Lily made her way to Christopher’s room and knocked on his door.“Who is there?” Christopher asked in irritation.“Li…Ashley,” Lily said and corrected quickly. She had just woken up, and her mind was still foggy, which was why she almost mistakenly called her real name. Now that she was back to impersonating Ashley Grander, she would do well to remember to act just like her.Christopher yanked the door open, facing Lily squarely. He was half-dressed, but he was yet to button his shirt, and so the curly hairs on his chest stood out, tempting Lily and inviting her to rub her hands over them.“What do you want?” Christopher asked harshly, jolting Lily back to reality.Lily
Rudney turned the shop sign to open, but his mind was not really on what he was doing. It had been weeks now, and he had not heard a single word from Lily. The last time he saw her was that evening when Lily was too impatient to wait for him.“Hey, don’t just stand there looking, get to work immediately!” their boss at the shop bellowed at Rudney, making him to jerk back to reality and continue with what he is doing. On a second thought, Rudney decided to ask their boss. If there was anyone who would know something, it would be him. Rudney had tried to get answers from Joe, Lily’s brother, but the poor boy seemed to also be in the dark, which made Rudney even more worried.“What if something bad had happened to Lily?” Rudney asked himself as he made his way to the boss’s office. The thought alone sent shivers down his spine. If anything happened to Lily, Rudney would never survive it. In fact, how he had been showing up at work since Lily’s mysterious disappearance and getting throu
Aimee sat in her office and smiled to herself. She was such a motherfucking genius! How did Christopher ever think that he would get married to another woman and live happily ever after? What would happen to all her years of hard work and resilience?“Chris, you are mine, and mine alone,” Aimee said to herself, meaning every single word that came out of her mouth. She only needed time and few good strategies, and just as she had done to a couple of his relationships, she would destroy his marriage as well.“To think that he left me for that irresponsible slut,” Aimee gritted her teeth in annoyance. She became angry with Christopher; he always picked the worst kind of women over her all the time, and it was beginning to piss the hell out of Aimee.Aimee was jerked out of her thoughts when her phone vibrated in front of her. She picked up instantly with expectancy.“Derek, have you got my news?” Aimee asked Derek. She hadn’t called him to ask for update because she did not want to pres
Lily already knew they would chop her head off when Don Grander and Emily sent for her as bright and early in the morning. They probably must have heard about the terrible news on the news, and of course, since it would spoil things for them, they would be pissed off as hell.Lily got dressed that morning and went to answer their call.“You snake!” Don Grander spat the moment Lily stepped into their living room. The hostility was so high and intense that Lily toppled backwards in fear. Don Grander charged at her angrily, making Lily to cower in fear. The one-eyed man who did their dirty jobs stood by the door solidly. When Lily entered the living room, he had been the one who had opened the door to her, so he shut the door quietly and stood by it menacingly. Lily hadn’t known this, because she had been occupied with encountering Don Grander and his wife. So when Lily toppled backwards in fear, she hit his chest with her back. At first, Lily hadn’t even thought that it was a human she
“Where the hell is she?!” Lily was jerked up in shock when she heard Christopher’s bellowing sound. She almost fixed herself under the bed just to hide away from Christopher’s rage and fury. She had been dreadfully anticipating this moment for a while now. After Juliet had narrated how she had gotten home the night before, Lily had been more scared than embarrassed, because she knew that Christopher would be mad as hell at her; he had warned her strictly not to embarrass him. The only thing Lily hadn’t been able to recall was what happened at the party, and for Christopher not to have returned the rest of the night was an indication that he was angry. Then while Lily had waited for Christopher to get back, she had seen the news break out on the internet, all over the blogs and social media.“Dirty Scandal: Billionaire Christopher Bridget’s beauty queen wife, Ashley Grander all wild and kinky at their party.”“Ashley Grander, Billionaire Christopher Bridget’s wife, acts dirty at the
Aimee Landon waited in her apartment for her guest to arrive. The night had gone just according to plan, and she was very excited.Well…except the fact that she was unable to lure Christopher Bridger to her apartment.Nevertheless, Aimee could not stop reminiscing on the kiss. She felt as though she was in paradise! She had known Christopher since high school, had had a huge crush on him since then, but the only closest thing she had ever gotten from him was holding hands, which he had taken causally. Over a decade, Aimee had watched Christopher go from one meaningless relationship to another, one fling to another, one one-night stand to another, one friends with benefit to another; some of them she had even had to secretly destroy herself. And he never noticed her. All the hints she gave, Christopher never looked in her direction.“You will soon be mine, Christopher Bridger,” Aimee smiled to herself. She grabbed her most expensive wine and took a big swig of it; she needed to reward
Lily woke up at the early hours of the morning with a funny feeling. She was alone on the bed, and as she turned and stirred, she felt the urge to puke. Lily dashed off into the bathroom and released everything that she had eaten the day before.“Ugh, what the heck?” Lily sulked. She felt like a complete mess. After puking and cleaning up, she decided to freshen up. Her brain was still fuggy, but she was beginning to recall a little of what happened last night. She could recall her encounter with Aimee, and how she had audaciously flirted with Christopher the entire night right in front of her. Lily also recalled that there had been men and women of the elite society in the party, and she had felt like a guest in her own party.Other than that, every other thing was a blur.Lily got out of the bathroom and sat in the bedroom again, thinking. It was still early in the morning, and the bed was empty, which meant that Christopher either did not share the bed with her, or he left early i
