Lily stood there, shocked and staring at Christopher like a statute. She hadn’t expected to be accosted by him, because with the way he stood, his hands in his pocket and stared at her with a stern look on his face.
“Did you hear what I just said?” Christopher asked. Lily blinked and swallowed. She knew that Christopher was not an idiot, and she had not been impersonating Ashley properly. Half of the time, Lily was freaked out of her mind, and she was barely managing to pull by, because everything was nothing like what Lily was accustomed to. “If you fail, your brother will be killed.” The voice of Don Grander rang in Lily’s head again and she knew that she could not afford to fail. Joe’s hearty smiles, and cheerful laughter, and his impeccable skills in the baseball pitch flashed through Lily’s mind and she became weak. Lily already felt horrible about the death of her parents; an episode that would continue to haunt her all the days of her life, and she could not bear to have Joe’s blood on her hands as well. Besides, he was not just her only brother, he was her only family and she loved him dearly. “What do you want to talk about?” Lily managed to ask. Then she realized that she shouldn’t have used such a meek tone. Christopher was obviously gunning for a confrontation and Lily suspected that it had something to do with how she had been acting since they got married. Lily decided that it was time she switched things up and acted like the person she was being forced to act as. Lily chinned up, squared her shoulders, and looked up at Christopher like a proper rebel. “What do you want to talk about?” Lily repeated the question, but with stubbornness. “I know you, Ashley, everybody does. You are far from a good girl, so what is the act about?” Christopher asked as he maintained eye contact with her. Lily knew well enough that it was a ploy for Christopher to check her attitude and find what he was desperately looking for, so she stared back at him and maintained the eye contact as well. “I have no idea what you are talking about,” Lily said. “You don’t?” Christopher asked. “Mm-hmm,” Lily said defiantly. “So you need me to spell out how you have been acting strange all this while?” Christopher asked. He was beginning to sound angry and impatient. Lily could not tell if that was a good thing for her or not, but whatever the case, she could not slip now. No matter how deeply Christopher intended to drill her, she was mentally prepared to handle it, because if he ever found out that she wasn’t the real Ashley Grander, he would kick her out in the blink of an eye, or have her arrested for impersonation, and rain hell on Don Grander. And Joe’s life would be gruesomely and callously cut short, added to the fact that she would have to mourn her brother while in jail. “Yes, if you don’t mind,” Lily stood her ground. “First, it was the way you were acting when we arrived at my house after the wedding,” Christopher started, intentionally skipping the part about the brief kiss at the altar after their vows. That was not really important, because he did not even want to talk about it, at least not with her, and besides, there were a couple of other things to mention other than that. Also, Christopher did not want her to even think for a split second that he had been dwelling on the kiss. “Then on the plane, and let’s not forget how you have been picking at every meal the hotel has served us, or how dumb and clueless you acted when you were served their meal menu. Ashley, I don’t know if you are aware of this, but I know who you are, and I know that you are a sucker for beaches, so why did you spend less than ten minutes at the beach yesterday?” Christopher rolled out all the words at once. “Are you monitoring me now?” Lily asked even though deep inside, her mind was racing really fast. She even feared that Christopher would hear the beating sound of her heart, because of how agitated the confrontation made her, but she gathered every ounce of courage that she had and kept up the act. Lily sensed that Christopher would have caught her once or twice when she unintentionally slipped from her act, but she had no idea that he saw and noticed this much. “Are you going to answer the question?” Christopher asked in return. He took a few menacing steps towards Lily, and Lily stood still, holding his gaze without an iota of fear or cowering at the sight of Christopher’s size against hers. “I didn’t know that when I was being married off to you I would become your puppet. I am not your servant or a child, or one of your freaking staff, Christopher,” Lily said confidently and defiantly. She hadn’t mentioned his name until now, and it sounded like something Lily would have liked on a different circumstance. “Answer me!” Christopher barked at her. Lily almost cowered in fear and shock at the harsh sound of Christopher’s voice, but thankfully, she had managed to maintain her stance. “Don’t you ever raise your voice at me, Christopher! Who the hell do you think you are to ask me questions about the life I choose live?” Lily’s voice hit the roof. Lily was stunned at how she had just spoken to Christopher; it was nothing like her. This was the first time in Lily’s life that she was raising her voice at anyone, especially one that was supposedly her husband, but surprisingly and pleasantly so, her reaction to Christopher’s tone on her worked, and he looked at her as though he was looking at Ashley Grander. Lily sighed inwardly, grateful that she had aced this one. Then to top the icing on the cake, Lily decided that this was her chance. “Speaking of,” Lily looked at Christopher, “I need ten thousand dollars, husband,” Lily demanded curtly.Aimee Landon walked into the tall building, her high pair of nude heels clicking against the magnolia floor. Her face wasn’t friendly for a fresh day’s start and that was primarily because she had had a rough night.“Good morning, Ms. Aimee,” the secretary greeted cheerily as she came out of the elevator and proceeded to her office.“Thank you,” Aimee said, straight-faced, and walked past her without bothering to be friendly for a bit. Her foul mood was very obvious, but Aimee did not care. She got into her office and shut the door.Barely two minutes into settling in, Aimee received an email stating that the rest of the board members had a meeting in less than thirty minutes; actually, it was reminder email, but Aimee hadn’t prepared for any meeting, and it was totally unlike her.Something was eating Aimee Landon up and it had something to do with Christopher Bridger honeymooning away in Miami.“I can definitely skip this one,” Aimee said disgustingly. Other days, she would be willi
After the confrontation which Lily felt she handled just fine, because Christopher stopped looking at her like a stranger, Lily went into the bathroom and stayed there for an unhealthy amount of time. The good thing was that Christopher would not be bothering her.Actually, he was not bothering her for one of the things Lily had been worried and nervous about; intimacy.“But how on earth am I supposed to keep up with this impersonation and not get caught?” Lily asked herself in exasperation. She turned on the shower so that the sound of the rushing water would be a distracting noise.“I am supposed to be doing my job at the Top Taste Wine shop, not out here in a luxurious hotel in Miami, impersonating a dead man’s wife,” Lily said as tears brimmed her eyes. Each time she had to act or pretend to be Ashley Grander, Lily felt herself slipping away and she hated it, because Ashley held too any unpleasant secrets that Lily doubted she would be able to hide away for long.Lily heard her ph
Lily knew that she had to do something. When she accepted to impersonate Ashley Grander, she had no idea that Ashley had so many secrets lying with her; secrets that Lily wondered if her parents knew about or not.Hedge had threatened to send the explicit videos to Christopher if she did not call off her honeymoon to go and see him. This was a tricky situation, and Lily knew that she would have to deal tactically with it.“Lily, you can do this. You have been faced with difficult challenges, and you have overcome them,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “You have got this. You know you are doing this for Joe.”Lily swallowed hard, rolled her shoulders and stepped out of the bathroom. Then she froze.Christopher Bridger stood, backing her, and shirtless. She had never seen him in anything other than his pair of suits. Even since they arrived in Miami for their honeymoon, he had been fully and formerly dressed…well, except at nights. Christopher’s back was wide and very muscular, down to
In less than an hour, Lily and Christopher were already flying out of Miami. “Did you enjoy your seat?” Matilda tried to be friendly when they entered the plane.Lily intended to be friendly to her, but from the corner of her eyes, she noticed Christopher was watching her, and he was boiling with anger, and for the life of her, she could not understand why he was so upset. This wasn’t a proper honeymoon, and Christopher did not even step out of the hotel the entire time, and Lily could not fathom why that was so. So Lily only nodded slightly, and when Matilda realized that Lily wouldn’t be paying her any mind, she left feeling embarrassed. Lily was sincerely sorry to have treated a harmless and friendly person, but there was nothing else that she could do. Lily decided to forget about her and concentrate on what Christopher had told her.“Be prepared to feed the media and paparazzi…”Lily was already exhausted from living Ashley’s life, and now she wondered what she was supposed to
Emily Torres looked at Lily with disdain and shook her head, “I told Grander that you were too chicken for this,” She complained. “Has Christopher found out your real identity?” She asked. There was a flicker of fear and dread in her eyes even though she tried to hide it.Lily looked at her and the first thing that came to her mind was to do tell Emily exactly how she felt. She could not understand how they could only be interested in getting money and taking Christopher’s wealth when they had just lost their only child. Lily knew that the only reason Emily had some sort of fear and dread in her eyes was because she was afraid to lose the money.“I sent you some money,” Lily said with thinned lips. She was equally trying to contain her anger. Lily knew that these people now controlled her entire existence, so she would be careful what she said or did.“As you should,” Emily said. Then she lowered her voice and said, “You know this is strictly between us, right? I am capable of making
By the time Lily left the Grander’s mansion, she had tears streaming down her cheeks. Ever since this whole thing started, she had been trying to be strong, all for Joe, but each day, she was being dragged deeper and deeper into Ashley’s messy lifestyle.Going to Emily had been a huge mistake.Somehow, Lily felt that she would have gotten a different response and approach to things if she had met with Don Grander. Only a few days and she already knew that Emily Torres was a woman who cared for herself alone and no one else. She was not concerned that Ashley was actually dead. It did not move her to hear that Lily was being threatened and blackmailed; the only thing that mattered to her was Lily playing by the books. She was the greediest woman Lily had ever met.Lily allowed the tears to fall freely as she drove to her doom, because going to see Hedge when she already knew what he wanted was heading straight to hell. First of all, Lily was a virgin, so how was she supposed to just giv
Lily’s mood was sour as she sat at the backseat of the car and drove to Christopher’s house. She was not used to terming it as hers for now, because Lily felt that she wasn’t worthy of living in such luxury and comfort. Her visit to Hedge continued to play in her head.“I want a renewed affair.”He was demanding for something that Lily would never be able to give him. Even if she wasn’t married to Christopher, there was no way she would give herself to a man like Hedge. The encounter with him made Lily realize yet again that she and Ashley Grander lived different lives.“I cannot grant you that,” Lily had told Hedge.Hedge had walked closer to Lily again, sniffed her, and ran his hand over her bare shoulders. Lily had gritted her teeth in irritation, and then annoyance for appearing in such revealing clothes, giving Hedge the opportunity to touch her skin. Lily felt like throwing up. All her life, the only man that had ever held her aside her deceased father and Joe was Rudney, her be
Much to Lily’s amazement, Christopher ordered the best clothing brand to give Lily a variety of clothes to pick from.“I don’t need to tell you how important this party is for both our families,” Christopher warned. “I personally don’t care about the media and blogs, but we both need this, so I don’t need to remind you to behave yourself tonight and stay away from scandals. This is our honeymoon welcome party; do not mess it up, Ashley”Lily ensured that she kept those words glued to her memory, although she doubted that she would need to. She wasn’t a scandalous woman, which even made it better for her, because that way, she would be able to stay true to herself, even if it was for a little bit. Lily had no idea what a honeymoon dinner party was for, because to her, it was completely unnecessary, especially since what she and Christopher did in Miami could not even be mistaken for a honeymoon, but she could not question anything. The ways of the rich and wealthy were always different
Don, why haven’t I gotten an alert for my spa and shopping apartment?” Emily asked as she stepped into Don’s study without bothering to knock.Don Grander was sipping on his liquor and waiting for Monk. Something had been bothering his mind since their last arrangement, and until he spoke with Monk, he would not be at peace. Monk had left to sort out a few of his personal things, and had promised to be back as soon as possible, but he was taking longer than necessary.“Not now, darling,” Don Grander responded. He sometimes wished that Emily was both understanding and sensitive, especially when it came to money, but that was like wishing that pigs could fly.“What do you mean by that?” Emily asked, her voice getting high, and Don knew that he was in for another bout of whining and nagging. “It has been a week!” Emily complained.“And you can wait another couple of days more; it can’t be that hard,” Don Grander said, his mind wandering back to the worry in his heart.“You know damn well
Time was ticking for Lily, and she was still confused with what to do. She could not go to Mr. Yang and fulfill his desires. Heck, she was a virgin! How was she supposed to just give that to anyone all because she needed to play Ashley’s role to the finish line? Lily sobbed and sobbed until she felt as though she could no longer sob. It was even more hurting that without knowing what Mr. Yang requested of her, Christopher had asked her to do it. Or what if he was just like them? Growing up in a middle-class family, Lily was raised with dignity and morals, which was why while most of her age mates were having boyfriends and getting pregnant, Lily stayed disciplined. She had never even had a boyfriend, and one morning, boom! She woke up with a husband. According to what her mother had taught her, Lily was to wait patiently until she found the love of her life, get married, have kids and raise a family just like the one her mother had raised. She was not about to throw all of that away
For a moment, Aimee froze in shock.Rosa was shivering on the floor and battling to breathe while more blood came out of the spot that Aimee had hit her with. “Help me…help me…” Rosa pleaded in rasped breath, her words coming out as a painful and muffled sound. Aimee was shocked at what she had done, because she never expected it to turn out this way. Granted, she had been very upset that Rosa was trying to play smart with her. If it hadn’t been for her, a woman like Rosa would never have had access to Christopher Bridger’s home. Christopher was not a man who was keen on interviews and blogs, and he was also a very private person. Regardless of how close they were and how long they had been working together, Aimee could literally count the number of times that she had visited Christopher’s mansion, and ever since he married the wild Ashley Grander, he had not made any attempt to invite Aimee over. In fact, Aimee knew that as long as Christopher remained married to Ashley, chances of
As soon as Aimee arrived at Rosa’s apartment, she turned to Derek and said, “Don’t worry, I will handle this myself.”Derek seemed surprised. “I thought we were in this together, and don’t forget that I brought this information to you,” Derek said.“If you wanted to get a pat for a job well done, Derek, you would have gotten the full information, not bring something to me in halves,” Aimee said tightly. “I know Rosa, and I personally hired her to create ruins and damage for Christopher and Ashley’s interview, and trust me, she is going to talk to me faster than she would talk to you, and besides, seeing you might unnerve her,” Aimee added logically. She knew that Derek liked to feel important, especially when it was his area of expertise, but then again, Aimee was too desperate to leave this all to him to handle. All she needed to do was go in there, speak with Rosa and that was all.“Whatever you say,” Derek was not cool with the decision, but he also did not want to push it, because
Aimee Landon waited for Derek in her car that she had parked by the road.“I hope he doesn’t delay much,” Aimee said to herself. Not that she had anything else to do, especially now that Christopher was out of the country, but since Derek told her that he found something about Ashley, she had been eager. She could not wait to get her hands on something that she could use against Ashley.“Christopher is mine, and no one is going to take him away from me,” Aimee told herself firmly. These were the words she continued to say to herself, because they made her believe that they were true, and they also made her fight for him. Aimee already knew that loving a man like Christopher meant competitions, and it was a good thing that she was a good player. She had worked so hard to not also be by Christopher’s side, but to also make him see her. She had been able to maintain her position by his side, and one task had been successfully achieved so far, and all she needed to do was put in a little
Lily had just been placed between the devil and the deep blue sea, and she had no idea what to do, but what Lily knew was that she would not give herself to Mr. Yang for anything in the world.“You always have a way of making things difficult for me,” Lily said angrily under her breath as she hurried to their hotel room. She couldn’t even wait for Christopher to return from the room.As soon as Lily arrived at the room, she barged in like a wild dog, startling Christopher who was going through his documents with ease.“Jeez, Ashley, what is it?!” Christopher asked after recovering from the shock that Lily had just put him through.“We need to leave, right now!” Lily said frantically.Christopher was surprised. “Why are we leaving? What are you talking about?” Christopher asked without standing up from his sitting position; he did not share in Lily’s need for haste.“Can you just listen to me for once and let us leave?” Lily practically pleaded. When she had rushed upstairs, she hadn’t
About two hours later, Christopher and Mr. Yang were done with the meeting.Lily was bored and tired of listening to a conversation that she did not understand at all, and the only thing that kept her from dozing off was watching Christopher Bridger in his element, but then again, she could not deny the fact that Christopher was extremely upset. Lily could not tell if he was upset with her, even though she had said things that she shouldn’t have said, but it did not ruin anything, as Mr. Yang still seemed very much interested in whatever Christopher was saying.“Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Yang,” Christopher said as the two men shook hands.“We are happy to host you, and I know that you were supposed to have this meeting with the full team, but everyone else had other delegations,” Mr. Yang explained. “Anyway, we will put all that you have said into consideration, and since you fit into our requirement, you will be highly considered,” Mr. Yang addedChristopher seemed pleased t
Lily coughed, as though the tea was choking her, but by the time she was done acting up, she realized that the men were still looking at her, and expecting a response, especially Mr. Yang.“Um, her name is…” Lily stuttered and she hoped that her drama would not cost her the biggest mistake of her life, because she did not know why they had shifted from Christopher’s business to Ashley’s family. It would have been better if she had an idea about what she was being asked, but Don Grander never saw it fit to give her all the details regarding Ashley, and now she was left stuttering.“I think my wife is having a difficult time because she had a rough night,” Christopher immediately chipped in.“Oh my, is that so?” Mr. Yang asked, instantly getting worried.“Yes, it is,” Lily quickly answered, grateful that Christopher had come to her rescue. “I had a banging headache, which was why I couldn’t join Christopher for yesterday’s dinner,” Lily answered.Christopher cleared his throat uncomfort
The show is yours, Mrs. Bridger, please regale me,” Mr. Yang said, looking at Lily with an expectant smile.“That’s right, honey,” Christopher added tightly. “Please tell Mr. Yang the beautiful story of how we met,” Christopher said. Then he muttered something that only Lily could hear. “Hell save you from my wrath if you don’t do this well.”Lily began to shiver inside again while struggling to maintain a better appearance; one that did not say that she was shaking and in dread.“Um…” Lily started. She had no idea what Christopher had sent to her, because she did not even get access to it, and at the same time, Lily could not keep the gentlemen waiting, especially Mr. Yang. “Our parents were very good friends,” Lily started. From the corner of her eyes, she saw Christopher’s jaw tighten in anger, and she knew right away that she had said something contradictory to his story, but whatever the case, Lily could not stop now, which only meant that Christopher would have to abandon his ow
