Emily Torres looked at Lily with disdain and shook her head, “I told Grander that you were too chicken for this,” She complained. “Has Christopher found out your real identity?” She asked. There was a flicker of fear and dread in her eyes even though she tried to hide it.
Lily looked at her and the first thing that came to her mind was to do tell Emily exactly how she felt. She could not understand how they could only be interested in getting money and taking Christopher’s wealth when they had just lost their only child. Lily knew that the only reason Emily had some sort of fear and dread in her eyes was because she was afraid to lose the money. “I sent you some money,” Lily said with thinned lips. She was equally trying to contain her anger. Lily knew that these people now controlled her entire existence, so she would be careful what she said or did. “As you should,” Emily said. Then she lowered her voice and said, “You know this is strictly between us, right? I am capable of making your life a living hell if you make me upset, Ashley,” Emily said conspiratorially as she threatened at the same time. Lily winced at being called Ashley by Emily. She could manage being addressed as the dead girl by anyone else, because to them, she was Ashley Grander, but hearing it from Emily after they had kidnapped her out of the blue and forced her into impersonating their dead daughter, she could bear it. It irked her ears. “I know that,” Lily said with gritted teeth. Growing up, she was not used to being tongue-tied or pushed into silence. She always had the liberty to say when things did not sit well with her, or when she was being treated in a way that she did not like, but this was completely different. This wasn’t her life to begin with. “So why are you here? Is that what you wanted to announce to Grander?” Emily asked. She could not stop staring condescendingly at Lily, making Lily feel as though she was inadequate or lacking something in her body. “No, that is not why I am here,” Lily responded. “I mentioned earlier that there is a big problem,” Lily reminded Emily. “Oh gosh, that,” Emily said as her hand flew to her head and began to caress her temple as though Lily’s presence and conversation were giving her a migraine. “Have you done something to make Christopher upset?” Emily rephrased. The question she asked now was different from what she had asked earlier, and Lily was grateful that at least, she had been sensible to know that if Christopher had found out that they were lying to him, they would have been thrown into jail by now. “No,” Lily lied, because Emily did not need that piece of information. There was no need telling them that she had slipped a couple of times. As long as Christopher hadn’t stated that he had doubts about Ashley’s authenticity, Lily was on the safe side. And besides, she did not want them to threaten or even go close to her brother, Joe. “So why are you here?” Emily asked impatiently. She could hardly wait to dismiss Lily, and as she flapped her manicured long nails, it was very obvious that she wanted Lily’s unrequested visit to be over. “It’s Hedge,” Lily said as she shifted uncomfortably in her standing position and that was because, she did not know how to address the issue, and from Emily’s reaction, it was obvious that she did not know who Hedge was. Her brows contorted in confusion. “Who is Hedge?” Emily asked with irritation. Now that it was clear to Lily that Emily had no idea, she wondered if she should continue with why she was here, but then again, she knew that she could not handle the situation on her own. They were the ones who forced and threatened her into being their puppet and impersonator for their dead daughter, so whatever obstacle she encountered, she would definitely say it out to them. “Ashley’s lover,” Lily answered. Emily groaned tiredly and sighed deeply. For someone that did not know about an affair, she was too calm and dismissive about it. “Ashley was too wild for her own good,” Emily said. “Not only did she go back on the plan, she was secretly meeting up with another man. Jeez, a little chastity would have saved all us, but not Ashley; always leaping before she looked.” Lily watched quietly as Emily grumbled and spoke poorly of Ashley. Not that the girl was a good girl in Lily’s books, but a mother shouldn’t be so comfortable in ruining the memories of her daughter. Emily then stopped for a minute to gather her thoughts. Then she turned to Lily and asked, “He isn’t threatening you, is he?” “Yes, he is, and that is why I have come,” Lily answered bluntly. Emily leaped to her feet and faced Lily squarely. “Are you insane? A lover of Ashley reaches out to you and the next thing that comes to your mind is to run here like a scared mouse?” Emily barked at Lily. For a minute, Lily was at a loss for words. “He is blackmailing me with Ashley’s sex tape, asking me for money, and demanding to continue the affair!” Lily did not know when she yelled out. She had expected that at least, this family would be reasonable, if not moral, but she had been clearly mistaken. Emily walked closer to Lily, her breath mingling with Lily’s, as though such closeness would make words sink deeper into Lily’s skull. “Do you have an idea who Ashley Grander was? Do you have a clue what this arrangement means to us? You should be privileged that you were picked to live this life. Do whatever needs to be done, even if it means dancing to the tune of her lover, or you and your brother are dead.”By the time Lily left the Grander’s mansion, she had tears streaming down her cheeks. Ever since this whole thing started, she had been trying to be strong, all for Joe, but each day, she was being dragged deeper and deeper into Ashley’s messy lifestyle.Going to Emily had been a huge mistake.Somehow, Lily felt that she would have gotten a different response and approach to things if she had met with Don Grander. Only a few days and she already knew that Emily Torres was a woman who cared for herself alone and no one else. She was not concerned that Ashley was actually dead. It did not move her to hear that Lily was being threatened and blackmailed; the only thing that mattered to her was Lily playing by the books. She was the greediest woman Lily had ever met.Lily allowed the tears to fall freely as she drove to her doom, because going to see Hedge when she already knew what he wanted was heading straight to hell. First of all, Lily was a virgin, so how was she supposed to just giv
Lily’s mood was sour as she sat at the backseat of the car and drove to Christopher’s house. She was not used to terming it as hers for now, because Lily felt that she wasn’t worthy of living in such luxury and comfort. Her visit to Hedge continued to play in her head.“I want a renewed affair.”He was demanding for something that Lily would never be able to give him. Even if she wasn’t married to Christopher, there was no way she would give herself to a man like Hedge. The encounter with him made Lily realize yet again that she and Ashley Grander lived different lives.“I cannot grant you that,” Lily had told Hedge.Hedge had walked closer to Lily again, sniffed her, and ran his hand over her bare shoulders. Lily had gritted her teeth in irritation, and then annoyance for appearing in such revealing clothes, giving Hedge the opportunity to touch her skin. Lily felt like throwing up. All her life, the only man that had ever held her aside her deceased father and Joe was Rudney, her be
Much to Lily’s amazement, Christopher ordered the best clothing brand to give Lily a variety of clothes to pick from.“I don’t need to tell you how important this party is for both our families,” Christopher warned. “I personally don’t care about the media and blogs, but we both need this, so I don’t need to remind you to behave yourself tonight and stay away from scandals. This is our honeymoon welcome party; do not mess it up, Ashley”Lily ensured that she kept those words glued to her memory, although she doubted that she would need to. She wasn’t a scandalous woman, which even made it better for her, because that way, she would be able to stay true to herself, even if it was for a little bit. Lily had no idea what a honeymoon dinner party was for, because to her, it was completely unnecessary, especially since what she and Christopher did in Miami could not even be mistaken for a honeymoon, but she could not question anything. The ways of the rich and wealthy were always different
“Hi, welcome to your party,” Aimee said to Christopher cheerily, intentionally acting as though Lily was not standing right next to him. “I was afraid you would be late for your own party,” she teased.Lily looked at her outfit and it screamed elegance and class. The thought that came to Lily’s mind was, “Damn, this woman is beautiful!”Lily had seen many beautiful women, but none of them came close to Aimee, plus, she was rich, a working class woman, and highly sophisticated. And very much in love with Christopher Bridger.Lily remembered her from her wedding reception. In fact, seeing Aimee brought back her warning of not being comfortable, and somehow, even though Lily knew that Aimee was the kind of woman that would go all out on a party, she sensed that Aimee had gone the extra length just for Christopher; she could not be convinced otherwise. The way Aimee looked at Christopher was too obvious to go unnoticed.Lily only wondered what went on between them at work.“I couldn’t,” C
“Hi, ladies and gentlemen,” Aimee said, clinking her nails on the wine glass in her hand to draw the attention of everyone in the party. Everyone turned towards her direction.Lily startled slightly when suddenly, she felt Christopher’s hand in hers. She did not realize that he had left the man he was talking to and walked over to her. Since she stepped into the party, Lily had barely been aware of anything around her. She just found herself swamped in the midst of all the glitz and glamour, and of course, Aimee’s antagonism.“Smile, people’s eyes are going to be on us from here on,” Christopher whispered gently into Lily’s ears. The image he drew in the eyes of other people would be a loving husband whispering sweet nothings to his wife.Lily smiled sweetly, and she did not even have to fake it, because the sound of Christopher’s voice and the air that came out of his mouth when he was not angry was soothing to Lily’s ears. She even wished that he would do it again.“Do not embarrass
Five minutes after Trisha left Lily, she felt a weird and odd stirring in her body system, and the next thing that happened to her in the next couple of minutes was completely lost on her.Lily suddenly felt the urge to go wild and crazy. She took off her heels and climbed on the nearest table to her, drawing instant attention to her. Christopher who was speaking to the older man abandoned him and walked hastily towards Lily.“Get down, right now!” Christopher said tightly. He was trying as much as possible not to raise his voice.Instead, Lily laughed like a wild woman on the loose. “Why should I, huh?” She looked at him with a cynical smile and erupted in laughter again. “Yoohoo! I feel on top of the world!” Lily yelled at the top of her voice. “Somebody get me a glass of alcohol!” Lily yelled wildly.A waitress walked close to Lily with a tray of glasses of alcohol, but the look Christopher gave her made her cower and scamper away in fright.“Darling,” Christopher patronized sweetl
“Stop, everyone!” Christopher yelled as he struggled to keep himself from falling on the table with Lily. He should have known that the next reactions of his guests would be to hold up their phones and capture his so-called wife embarrassing herself, and him in the process. Christopher had never felt so humiliated in his entire life, and because of her, he had just lost a major deal it took him a couple of minutes to secure. It was a miracle that Aimee had been able to get the man to attend his party, giving Christopher a rare chance to win the man over to his side, and now, in the blink of an eye, of all it had gone down the drain.“Put down your phones right now!” Christopher barked at them. This time around, they put down their phones. Most of them, especially the high class women, giggled and laughed at Christopher, while the men just couldn’t believe what they were seeing already. Some of the other women were pissed off as hell, because while Lily danced and displayed her sexy
“Do you have an idea what her misconduct cost me tonight?!” Christopher bellowed. The sound of his angered voice had startled Don Grander and Emily. Instead of going home, Christopher had gone to Don Grander’s mansion instead. He knew that Ashley would still be intoxicated, and therefore, nothing he would say would get to her, and Christopher also feared that if he went right to her with the way he was feeling, he might do something they would all regret. Christopher had never been violent with women. In fact, half of the time, he had been avoiding situations that would lead him to acting out of line, but then again, he was married to the craziest and wildest woman in the entire universe.“Son, you need to calm down,” Don Grander started by saying. Aside from Emily who had been woken up by Christopher’s barging in, and as a result, seemed a little grumpy and sleepy, Don Grander was still very much awake and active. When Christopher had stormed in raging like a furious lion, he had me
“What?!” Lily was stunned and afraid and alert. Her mind instantly went to Monk and Don Grander’s threats that they would kill Joe if she failed on any of her tasks.“Yeah, and it was pretty weird. It made me feel uncomfortable,” Joe said over the phone. She could feel the discomfort in his voice, and Lily’s heart broke into more pieces. She even began to wonder how much heartache she could take at once.“I really wish you were here, Lily; I feel safe with you around,” Joe said warmly and sadly. “It has been over a year, and this is beginning to look creepy to me. Even Rudney does not exactly know where you are,” Joe admitted.Lily did not think that Joe would think too deeply about everything. She hadn’t even really been thinking about Joe and how her absence might have affected him. More tears dropped from Lily’s eyes in pain and regret. If only she could tell Joe exactly what was going on, but then again, she did not even have the liberty of brooding about that for so long, because
Lily felt like she had been hit with a ton of bricks at the harshness and cruelty of Christopher’s words, and when she managed to look into his eyes, she could see all the emotions right there.“Let me say what I came here to tell you, please,” Lily begged deeply.“How did you manage to bleed like a virgin when everyone knows that you are not, huh?” Christopher asked bitterly and angrily.Lily opened her mouth to say that it was because she was a virgin, but no words came out of her mouth, and Christopher mistook Lily’s inability to say the words as guiltiness.Christopher shook his head. “You are my worst mistake, Ashley, and I blame myself for not fighting this arrangement when I was told. After this party, you are going to return to your father’s house discreetly until this whole crap of a marriage is over; I never want to see your face again,” Christopher said firmly.Lily squeezed her eyes shut as the words sliced through her heart. She felt like Christopher had literally taken a
Lily could not wrap her head around everything that the old maid had revealed to her.Ashley Grander was alive, and no one knew!A tiny part of Lily was relieved that she was, because after all she had found out about her, it just didn’t sound fair that she would have been murdered. Indeed, she played her game well. Another tiny part of Lily wanted to see Ashley, the only girl in the world that looked almost like her, but according to what the old maid said, Ashley was in a far away country where no one knew her and with a new identity. She was living with the old maid’s distant relative, and to ensure that she is completely safe, she and the old maid had had to keep off communicating.Ashley Grander was smarter than anyone Lily had ever met.Thinking away from her now, Lily thought about herself. As much as she was relieved that Ashley wasn’t truly dead after all the evil that surrounded her, she had been the unfortunate person forced into living her life, doing her job, and cleaning
“What?” Lily was stupefied. She could not believe that she had been played so well, but then again, a lot of questions were already running through her mind. Now, nothing seemed clear and she needed it to be, so she sat back down again.“You knew from the beginning that I wasn’t Ashley,” Lily stated. It was a statement that required an answered, a clarity of some sort.“Even if Ashley was truly dead, I would have known,” the old maid responded. “I raised her, you know,” she started as tears gathered in her eyes. “When her mother mysteriously and tragically passed, she was left in my care, and I loved and nurtured Ashley like she was my child. Do you know how heartbreaking it was for me to see her being constantly maltreated and punished?” The old maid asked.Lily could feel the raw pain in her heart as she spoke, and she shuddered at it.She would never be able to grasp the life of the wealthy and powerful. The more she thought she knew, the deeper the whole thing went. When she worke
After Lily left Don Grander’s house, she could not afford to go back to Christopher’s mansion. There was still Hedge’s threat hanging over her head, but now, even Christopher’s life, reputation, and company are at stake here.Lily did not want anything to happen to Christopher Bridger at all. Then something struck Lily; to use Ashley’s phone to get across to the old maid! Why didn’t she even think of that all this while? She could not believe that she had allowed something as helpful as that escape her memory. She did not have enough time now, as the weekend event is just a few weeks away. Lily knew that Hedge wasn’t joking when he made a threat to Christopher’s life, because if he could release the sex video he had of Ashley, then he could certainly try to kill Christopher. The thought of it sent shivers down Lily’s spine.Thankfully, the old maid’s phone rang, and Lily waited with desperate anticipation for her to pick up.“Please pick up. Please pick up,” Lily prayed, and eventuall
Lily could not stop thinking about what she read and the possibility of what might be. The thought of it made her really scared and confused. Was Ashley’s body found? What truly happened that made Don Grander and Emily believe that their daughter was dead? These questions disturbed Lily’s mind as Christopher’s driver drove her to Don Grander’s house. She would have loved to ask Don Grander these questions, but she knew him too well now. She knew that talking to him about it would raise suspicions, and if it did, he might want to get rid of her. The only person that Lily could have been able to ask without fear was the old maid, but she had been fired, and Lily did not know where to find her.“I have to find her by every means possible,” Lily told herself.Don Grander had to be the worst parent that Lily had ever known. How could a man treat his own daughter like that? Lily’s father might be dead, but when he was alive, he loved, provided for, and fiercely protected their mother along
Lily went to the guestroom and pondered greatly. So after everything, Christopher meant it when he said he was going to reinstate Aimee, and not just that, he had picked her to plan an event as important as this one.Lily knew how important this was to Christopher, because she went with him on the business trip and she knew everything that happened there…or almost everything, and yet, it was Aimee Landon he chose.“What is it with him and Aimee?” Lily asked herself. She was frustrated, but she was downright jealous. Lily’s heart ached just thinking about it, and now, tears filled her eyes. She would never mean anything to a man like Christopher Bridger, whether as Ashley Grander or Lily Bashwood. Deep down, Lily wished that Christopher would at least like her, that is Bashwood’s daughter, but that was only a wild dream.Unfortunately, when Lily wasn’t even hoping to, she had fallen for Christopher Bridger. Why wouldn’t she fall in love with him? Christopher was the only man aside from
Lily woke up in a different mood; Hedge’s threat was still hanging over her head, and she did not know the right approach to it, and then there was this business thing that Christopher asked her to get prepared for.Lily did not want to be a part of it whatsoever, majorly because of the presence of Mr. Yang, but she really did not have a choice. Ever since Don Grander kidnapped her and forced her into this life, she had not done anything of her own volition. Maybe she would just find something a little fitting and throw on, because her mind wasn’t really on it, or maybe she would feign sickness on that day to excuse her from attending. The landline in Christopher’s house rang, and Lily wondered if she should pick or not. It barely ever rang, so she could hardly tell. At the end of the day, Lily decided to ignore it, because she did not want to mess things up for Christopher, just in case she wasn’t supposed to take the call.A few minutes after the landline stopped ringing, Ashley’s p
“Miss Aimee, your attention is required in the boardroom,” Christopher’s new secretary said to Aimee.Aimee had arrived at work in a jolly mood, certain that she had been able to manage every situation to the best of her knowledge. She was not even bothered about Derek, because she knew that he would be so busy fighting to win Trisha’s love back to even think of him.“Such an asshole,” Aimee cussed. “Who the heck falls in love with someone they ought to have killed?” Aimee scoffed. She should have known that Derek was incapable of tasks such as the ones she required of him. Anyway, Aimee was thinking about finding a more capable person that would carry out tasks without questions, delay, or even falling in love, when she got the message.“In the boardroom, right now?” Aimee asked, wanting to be sure if she heard correctly. Since Christopher demoted her without a conscience, she had not been asked to come to the boardroom, knowing that only the senior staff members were allowed in ther
