In less than an hour, Lily and Christopher were already flying out of Miami.
“Did you enjoy your seat?” Matilda tried to be friendly when they entered the plane. Lily intended to be friendly to her, but from the corner of her eyes, she noticed Christopher was watching her, and he was boiling with anger, and for the life of her, she could not understand why he was so upset. This wasn’t a proper honeymoon, and Christopher did not even step out of the hotel the entire time, and Lily could not fathom why that was so. So Lily only nodded slightly, and when Matilda realized that Lily wouldn’t be paying her any mind, she left feeling embarrassed. Lily was sincerely sorry to have treated a harmless and friendly person, but there was nothing else that she could do. Lily decided to forget about her and concentrate on what Christopher had told her. “Be prepared to feed the media and paparazzi…” Lily was already exhausted from living Ashley’s life, and now she wondered what she was supposed to be doing. Christopher did not explain anything to her, and Lily wished that there was someone who could explain everything to her. When Lily had told Christopher that she wanted to return to Mexico, she already planned to visit Don Grander and Emily Torres to inform them about this Hedge blackmailer guy, although she wasn’t still sure whether or not they knew about it. Lily shook her heead; Ashley Grander was a very wild girl, and Lily felt as though she would never be able to fit in or be exactly like Ashley no matter how hard she tried. One year seemed like a decade to Lily to live the life of someone else. Lily saddened at the thought, but Lily had no choice. In fact, instead of dealing with her predicament, Lily decided to sleep off, just like she had done on their way back. Christopher was still glaring at Lily, and she could feel the hatred of his stare on Lily’skin. He wasn’t engrossed with receiving work calls, which gave him too much time to glare at Lily without bothering to hide how he felt. Lily rested her head, and in no time, began to sleep. Later, Lily was woken up. Christopher was still looking at Lily, but not with that much venom anymore, or for now. “We are here,” Christopher told Lily. Then much to Lily’s surprise and initial confusion, Christopher took hold of her hand in his as they stepped out of the plane and exited the airport. “There are dozens of media personalities outside, along with the paparazzi. They will be expecting a madly in love and sweet couple to come out, and if you don’t give them what they want, they are going to feast on you,” Christopher informed Lily as they slowly walked out. “I’m sure I don’t need to inform you to smile and act all loved up, right?” Christopher asked and Lily nodded in agreement. Not that she had a chance anyway. True to Christopher’s words, they were met with a frenzy of eager gossipers all wanting to get shots of the latest couple arriving back in town. Instinctively, Lily’s first reaction was to protect her eyes from the blinding lights of her cameras, but Christopher bent slightly and whispered in her ears. “Don’t mess this up.” Apparently, their presence must mean something to Christopher, because for someone who detested scandals, he sure gave room for it. “Welcome back, Mr. And Mrs. Bridger!” They said eagerly while sending shots of camera their way. Lily noticed that Christopher was smiling! It was a tight smile that did not reach his eyes, but he was smiling. Since Lily got married to him, she hadn’t seen him smiling, and now, he was freaking smiling. Lily turned to the camera and flashed her brightest smile at them. “Your honeymoon was too short. Mr. Bridger, do you mind telling us why that is?” Some of them asked. Then they began to throw personal and triggering questions towards Christopher and Lily, and that was when Christopher had decided that they had had enough. With the help of his bodyguards, they were shoved aside, making way for Lily and Christopher to get to their car. “Drive me to the office, then you can take her home,” Christopher to his driver. When they arrived at his empire, Lily’s mouth had literally dropped open at the sight of the magnificent and gigantic building. It was the tallest and biggest building that she had ever seen. Granted, Lily had heard that Christopher Bridger was the richest young man in the city, but never did Lily imagine such wealth and power. Christopher, before getting out of the car, turned to Lily and said, “We have a welcome party tonight, so do whatever the heck you want, and I’ll see you in about two hours,” and then he was gone. Lily exhaled. Then she told the driver to take her to Don Grander’s mansion. The good thing is that she would not be suspected for stopping by; they were her parents after all. Lily’s heart began to pound heavily as they neared the Grander’s mansion, and she found herself fighting against nervousness. The house brought dread and a scary feeling in Lily, because that was the house that became the genesis of her woes. Breathing in and out, Lily got out of the car and proceeded into the house. In the living room, Emily Torres say like a trophy wife, sipping on a glass of expensive wine. “Well well, look who has decided to pay daddy and stepmom a curtsesy visit,” Emily’s words slurred. “Your pictures are already swimming the internet, although I would have preferred that you smiled like the daughter of whom you are, and not some wretched peasant,” Emily said. The words hit Lily in all the wrong places, but that was not why she had come. “I need to see Don Grander,” Lily said tightly. “He is out for a silly golf game. Right now, I am in charge,” Emily stated firmly. “So what it is?” Lily decided to talk regardless. “A big problem has come up.”Emily Torres looked at Lily with disdain and shook her head, “I told Grander that you were too chicken for this,” She complained. “Has Christopher found out your real identity?” She asked. There was a flicker of fear and dread in her eyes even though she tried to hide it.Lily looked at her and the first thing that came to her mind was to do tell Emily exactly how she felt. She could not understand how they could only be interested in getting money and taking Christopher’s wealth when they had just lost their only child. Lily knew that the only reason Emily had some sort of fear and dread in her eyes was because she was afraid to lose the money.“I sent you some money,” Lily said with thinned lips. She was equally trying to contain her anger. Lily knew that these people now controlled her entire existence, so she would be careful what she said or did.“As you should,” Emily said. Then she lowered her voice and said, “You know this is strictly between us, right? I am capable of making
By the time Lily left the Grander’s mansion, she had tears streaming down her cheeks. Ever since this whole thing started, she had been trying to be strong, all for Joe, but each day, she was being dragged deeper and deeper into Ashley’s messy lifestyle.Going to Emily had been a huge mistake.Somehow, Lily felt that she would have gotten a different response and approach to things if she had met with Don Grander. Only a few days and she already knew that Emily Torres was a woman who cared for herself alone and no one else. She was not concerned that Ashley was actually dead. It did not move her to hear that Lily was being threatened and blackmailed; the only thing that mattered to her was Lily playing by the books. She was the greediest woman Lily had ever met.Lily allowed the tears to fall freely as she drove to her doom, because going to see Hedge when she already knew what he wanted was heading straight to hell. First of all, Lily was a virgin, so how was she supposed to just giv
Lily’s mood was sour as she sat at the backseat of the car and drove to Christopher’s house. She was not used to terming it as hers for now, because Lily felt that she wasn’t worthy of living in such luxury and comfort. Her visit to Hedge continued to play in her head.“I want a renewed affair.”He was demanding for something that Lily would never be able to give him. Even if she wasn’t married to Christopher, there was no way she would give herself to a man like Hedge. The encounter with him made Lily realize yet again that she and Ashley Grander lived different lives.“I cannot grant you that,” Lily had told Hedge.Hedge had walked closer to Lily again, sniffed her, and ran his hand over her bare shoulders. Lily had gritted her teeth in irritation, and then annoyance for appearing in such revealing clothes, giving Hedge the opportunity to touch her skin. Lily felt like throwing up. All her life, the only man that had ever held her aside her deceased father and Joe was Rudney, her be
Much to Lily’s amazement, Christopher ordered the best clothing brand to give Lily a variety of clothes to pick from.“I don’t need to tell you how important this party is for both our families,” Christopher warned. “I personally don’t care about the media and blogs, but we both need this, so I don’t need to remind you to behave yourself tonight and stay away from scandals. This is our honeymoon welcome party; do not mess it up, Ashley”Lily ensured that she kept those words glued to her memory, although she doubted that she would need to. She wasn’t a scandalous woman, which even made it better for her, because that way, she would be able to stay true to herself, even if it was for a little bit. Lily had no idea what a honeymoon dinner party was for, because to her, it was completely unnecessary, especially since what she and Christopher did in Miami could not even be mistaken for a honeymoon, but she could not question anything. The ways of the rich and wealthy were always different
“Hi, welcome to your party,” Aimee said to Christopher cheerily, intentionally acting as though Lily was not standing right next to him. “I was afraid you would be late for your own party,” she teased.Lily looked at her outfit and it screamed elegance and class. The thought that came to Lily’s mind was, “Damn, this woman is beautiful!”Lily had seen many beautiful women, but none of them came close to Aimee, plus, she was rich, a working class woman, and highly sophisticated. And very much in love with Christopher Bridger.Lily remembered her from her wedding reception. In fact, seeing Aimee brought back her warning of not being comfortable, and somehow, even though Lily knew that Aimee was the kind of woman that would go all out on a party, she sensed that Aimee had gone the extra length just for Christopher; she could not be convinced otherwise. The way Aimee looked at Christopher was too obvious to go unnoticed.Lily only wondered what went on between them at work.“I couldn’t,” C
“Hi, ladies and gentlemen,” Aimee said, clinking her nails on the wine glass in her hand to draw the attention of everyone in the party. Everyone turned towards her direction.Lily startled slightly when suddenly, she felt Christopher’s hand in hers. She did not realize that he had left the man he was talking to and walked over to her. Since she stepped into the party, Lily had barely been aware of anything around her. She just found herself swamped in the midst of all the glitz and glamour, and of course, Aimee’s antagonism.“Smile, people’s eyes are going to be on us from here on,” Christopher whispered gently into Lily’s ears. The image he drew in the eyes of other people would be a loving husband whispering sweet nothings to his wife.Lily smiled sweetly, and she did not even have to fake it, because the sound of Christopher’s voice and the air that came out of his mouth when he was not angry was soothing to Lily’s ears. She even wished that he would do it again.“Do not embarrass
Five minutes after Trisha left Lily, she felt a weird and odd stirring in her body system, and the next thing that happened to her in the next couple of minutes was completely lost on her.Lily suddenly felt the urge to go wild and crazy. She took off her heels and climbed on the nearest table to her, drawing instant attention to her. Christopher who was speaking to the older man abandoned him and walked hastily towards Lily.“Get down, right now!” Christopher said tightly. He was trying as much as possible not to raise his voice.Instead, Lily laughed like a wild woman on the loose. “Why should I, huh?” She looked at him with a cynical smile and erupted in laughter again. “Yoohoo! I feel on top of the world!” Lily yelled at the top of her voice. “Somebody get me a glass of alcohol!” Lily yelled wildly.A waitress walked close to Lily with a tray of glasses of alcohol, but the look Christopher gave her made her cower and scamper away in fright.“Darling,” Christopher patronized sweetl
“Stop, everyone!” Christopher yelled as he struggled to keep himself from falling on the table with Lily. He should have known that the next reactions of his guests would be to hold up their phones and capture his so-called wife embarrassing herself, and him in the process. Christopher had never felt so humiliated in his entire life, and because of her, he had just lost a major deal it took him a couple of minutes to secure. It was a miracle that Aimee had been able to get the man to attend his party, giving Christopher a rare chance to win the man over to his side, and now, in the blink of an eye, of all it had gone down the drain.“Put down your phones right now!” Christopher barked at them. This time around, they put down their phones. Most of them, especially the high class women, giggled and laughed at Christopher, while the men just couldn’t believe what they were seeing already. Some of the other women were pissed off as hell, because while Lily danced and displayed her sexy
The party had ended about an hour ago, but Christopher was stilled held back shaking hands with men that mattered most in the countries, and already signing business deal.It was a new dawn for the Bridger Empire. As Aimee stood by and watched, she could not help but smile. Yes, she loved Christopher Bridger deeply, but now, she loved him ten times more. It swelled her heart watching him climb that stage, and more, that she was right there with him.“As it should be,” Aimee said to herself. She wondered why Christopher couldn’t see that she was his perfect match. Ashley would not have known the next thing to being Christopher’s anchor for tonight if she had been available, and Aimee was more than happy that she had had to do a little dirty act just to get this moment for herself and Christopher. She smiled triumphantly as she watched Christopher interact with people whose deals were capable of shooting up his company as her mind drifted to what she had had to do for him to earn it.Wh
I am Ashley Grander. I am wild and reckless. I have been to many countries like…” Lily began to read through nuggets about Ashley that Emily had given her.“You will have to start from the beginning and relearn everything, and commit the new ones to memory, because if you fail again this time around, you will not be punished; you will be killed,” Emily had told her as she handed the piece of paper to Lily.So Lily had gone back to Ashley’s bedroom and had begun to digest everything written in the paper with vigor and determination, but her mind kept drifting back to Christopher and Aimee at the party. Something good had obviously happened to Christopher Bridger, but Lily could not think about it without thinking about Aimee.“That is your next assignment.”Those were Emily’s words, and Lily knew now more than ever before that she could not fail. She dared not fail otherwise she would not only die, but Joe would also die. Lily now worried less about Joe, because no one had mentioned a
Lily could not tear her eyes off the TV. Christopher and Aimee looked like the perfect power couple, and a pang of jealousy shot through my veins. First, it was Aimee picking up Christopher’s call, and now, they were both attending the same party together. From the guests shown on TV, it was obvious that it was an elite party, and Lily could not deny how impeccably handsome Christopher looked. Among all the people in the crowd, Lily’s eyes continued to pick Christopher out, but then again, seeing him also meant that she would see Aimee glued to his side possessively.“Do you see what you have caused?” Emily’s voice rang out, cutting through the moment as she made her way downstairs.I turned quickly and looked at Emily, fear enveloping me all over again. For a moment, watching Christopher, Lily had almost forgotten her current predicament.“I…it’s…” I stuttered, not knowing what to say.Emily came and stood beside Lily, and Lily cowered in fright, thinking that Emily was going to gra
Lily was glad that she had been able to get back to her room without getting caught even though her attempts were futile. It was not until she was back in her room and pacing around again that she remembered that she could have called Rudney. “Gosh, Lily! How could you forget such a thing?!” Lily berated herself. The one person that would have picked up was Rudney, and yet, she did not remember to call him and ask about Joe. Anyway, Lily blamed it on the fact that she was agitated and also trying to hurry up. Then her mind went to her call to Christopher. “It has just been a couple of days that I have been away, and he is already going about with Aimee,” I said to myself jealously. Since when did Christopher start giving his phone to Aimee as though she was his secretary, and what were they doing together at that time? Lily had heard soft music playing in the background; were they out on a date? Lily scoffed. “Christopher never cared about me…or Ashley, and coming here was just
“Are you there now?” Don Grander asked Monk.Monk sat in his car outside the hospital as he talked with Don Grander over the phone. He had just arrived, but he knew that he could not stay parked in that spot longer than necessary.“All you have to do is get in there, get access to his word, and smother him,” Monk rehearsed the whole process that he had cooked up in his head over and over again. This was a government hospital, and he knew that what he was about to do was very risky. If he got caught, he would rot in jail. Monk never shied away from assigned duties, but he wished that Don Grander had assigned the same person he hired to find out if Benedict died or not to simply complete the task.“Yes, I just got here,” Monk answered, grounding his teeth. He looked around the premises and everyone went about their businesses innocently. His eyes fell on the hospital’s entrance, and Monk swallowed hard. The state government never took lightly to crimes, and Monk knew the consequences. H
Lily paced about in her room.“I have to do something,” she said to herself frantically. “I can’t just stay locked up here without knowing what is going on,” Lily thought deeply. “What is Don Grander was referring to Joe?” Lily shuddered at the thought of that. She knew she had to do something…or try, at least.Lily gently opened the door and looked around the aisle left and right, and she saw no one. Maybe Don Grander and Emily had forgotten about her, because aside from eavesdropping on their conversation, she had not heard Emily’s voice around.Taking the risk, Lily tiptoed downstairs, careful not to be seen. In the living room, she sighed in relief when she noticed that no one was there. Then swiftly, she made her way to the kitchen. Fortunately for Lily, she saw the old maid chopping some vegetables, but then again, the reserved one was also there.“Ashley,” the old maid called when they both turned and saw Lily. There was something about the reserved maid that made Lily quite un
Aimee Landon had taken it upon herself to hire stylists for Christopher’s dress fittings for the party. This was often the job of Trisha, but now that Trisha had been fired and Christopher was yet to get a replacement, Aimee gladly took it upon herself. “He must look dashing and impeccable, and no one in that party must come any close!” Aimee barked orders at the stylists as they styled Christopher in his bedroom. Another reason Aimee was over the moon with joy was because this gave her the opportunity to not just be in Christopher’s house, but in his room for the very first time. Usually, Christopher should have been styled at their studio, but because Aimee wanted this rare opportunity, she paid them extra to come to the house and style Christopher. Christopher was not comfortable with the idea of it; he preferred to go to their studio to get styled, because he hated having strangers in his mansion, but Aimee managed to talk him into accepting. “I think they are doing a good job,
Lily felt better than she had been, and for days now, she hadn’t set eyes on Don Grander or Emily. She wondered if they had forgotten that she was here. She also wished that Christopher would come again to take her away from here. Lily got up from Ashley’s bed and checked herself in the dressing mirror. Her face, arms, and legs were the same, but her back was filled with scars from Don Grander’s whips. As Lily managed to look at the scars in the mirror, tears began to flow from her eyes. Never in her life had she experienced this depth of pain, much more being scarred by it, and Lily regretted the day that Monk had seen and kidnapped her. “If I had just waited for Rudney like he pleaded with me to, I would not be here right now,” Lily said as she sobbed bitterly and regrettably. Then her mind instantly went to Joe! She had been so immersed in pain that she did not remember to think about Joe. The last time she had tried to ask Monk about him, she did not get a response. Ashley
Benedict opened his eyes when he heard the door opening; it was the nurse that was coming to give him his medication.“Good day, Mr. Benedict,” she greeted warmly. “It is so good to see that you are awake. How are you feeling?” She asked.“How long have I been here?” Benedict asked. The last thing he remembered was that he was lured out of the bar he usually frequented in his drunken state and then he was hit by a bullet before he could even fathom what was going on. He might have been drunk, but Benedict knew for a fact that someone had shot at him and almost gotten him killed.Only that he was not fortunate or quick enough to see who that was.“About a week now,” she answered as she went on to check Benedict’s vitals.Benedict tried to turn, but he felt a jarring pain shoot through his left arm. “Ouch!” He groaned in pain.“Take it easy, Mr. Benedict, you are still healing,” she told him. Then she picked out the drugs he was supposed to take, gave them to him, and gave them to Bened
