Chapter Thirty-Nine: Surprising me

Jesse's POV

I couldn’t take it anymore. It was late at night, and I hadn’t heard from Tamara. My calls had gone unanswered, my texts unread. I felt a gnawing worry in the pit of my stomach that only grew as the hours ticked by. What if she was sick again? What if something had happened to her?

Without thinking, I grabbed my keys and headed out the door, driving in a rush to her place. The streets were eerily quiet, the city seemingly holding its breath. I barely noticed the passing buildings and traffic lights; my mind was solely focused on Tamara.

When I finally pulled up to her apartment, I parked haphazardly and ran to her door, knocking with urgency. The wait felt eternal, but finally, the door creaked open, and there she was.

“Why have you been ignoring my calls all day? I was so damn sick with worry!” I burst out, my voice louder than I intended.

Tamara stood there, her expression calm and unreadable. “I’m fine,” she said slowly.
