Veronica-

After finishing my shift at the bar, I went to the hospital to check on Andrew. He had been fast asleep, so I didn’t bother him. Giving him a kiss goodnight, I snuck out to take a quick shower in the locker room that was for staff.

I had a shift at the hospital in a few hours, so I wanted to grab my scrubs and get cleaned up. A customer had spilled some alcohol on me, so I stunk like a distillery. After showering, I dropped my bar uniform off with housekeeping.

They offered to help me with my laundry, so I didn’t have to spend money on a laundry mat. I was extremely grateful for everything the hospital staff and the bar did for me. It took away some of the stress I had to deal with.

They said they would take it up to Andrew’s room after it was cleaned, since I was going to be working. Having a few hours until the start of my shift, I decided to sleep in the chair that was in Andrew’s room. They had offered me a bed a few times, but I had declined it because there were other patients here that might need it or their families.

Getting in a few hours of sleep, I woke up to Lily gently shaking me. “It’s time to get up.” She whispered.

Groaning, I stretched my limbs out as I looked over at a still sleeping Andrew. Not wanting to wake him, I tossed the blanket I had used, on the back of the chair. Slipping outside with Lily, I gently closed the door.

“How was he?” I asked, still feeling exhausted.

“He did better last night. Only threw up one more time. He managed to keep some Jell-O down and a small glass of orange juice. You know he is worried about you, as am I. I wish I could help you more with things.” Lily placed her hand on my shoulder and gave it a light squeeze.

“You help plenty. I wouldn’t know what I would do without you.” I fought back the tears that surfaced.

“Let’s go get you some coffee before your shift starts.” She offered, taking my hand in hers and leading me down the hall.

“How long is your shift?” I asked when we were inside the elevator.

“I get off at noon.” She answered.

Most of the nurses worked long hours, especially with being short-staffed. If I didn’t need flexible hours, I wouldn’t mind working the long hours. It would help a lot more with paying for things.

We went down to the coffee cart that was out front of the hospital. Keeping to small talk as she told me about how Andrew beat her in a game of cards last night. I enjoyed the conversations we had, even though at times it was a constant reminder that Andrew was sick.

The older lady at the coffee cart refused to take the money I offered, when she handed me my coffee. She has been doing it for months, but each time I keep trying to pay. I hated feeling like a charity case all the time.

“I know what you are thinking, so stop.” Lily chastised me. “No one helps you because they think you are charity. They help because they care. Let them care. You do so much and barely take care of yourself. It is okay to accept help.”

Sighing, I knew she was right. Well, not exactly, but she gave me the same speech on a regular basis. Heading back inside, I was surprised when I saw Lyrek getting onto the elevator. He didn’t see me, which was a good thing.

The last thing I wanted to do was find out that I had a stalker. Knowing I was probably paranoid, I went to walk up the stairs with Lily. This was our routine when we had shifts together in the morning.

It was a chance for us to spend a little time together, drink our coffee, and for us to get our adrenaline pumping, to wake up. Sometimes if I was here with Andrew and she was working, or the other way around, we would still do it together. We talked a little bit about her boyfriend, that she was thinking of breaking up with.

There was nothing new there, considering she had been saying she would dump him for months. It wasn’t that she didn’t love him, she just didn’t think he would ever commit. He was loyal, but they had been dating for years but he hadn’t asked her to even move in with him.

We were about to open the door to the pediatric floor when her pager went off. She looked down at it and I knew from the look on her face that it was Andrew. Dropping my coffee cup, I jerked the door open and ran to Andrew’s room.

“Code blue!” One of the nurses yelled.

I was about to enter the room, but I was pulled back by Lily. “You know you can’t go in there!” She yelled over the chaos.

Panic gripped my heart, and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. As much as I wanted to fight against Lily, I knew she was right. Dr. Davis, Andrew’s doctor, rushed past us and relieved the nurse from doing chest compressions.

“Lily, get in here!” Dr. Davis yelled.

Pushing her to go, I promised her I would stay out of the room. She rushed in to take over compressions as a crash cart was pushed in by another nurse. Watching in horror, I silently prayed for Andrew not to die.

“Charge to two hundred! Clear!” Dr. Davis hollered just before he touched a pair of paddles to Andrew’s chest.

The room stilled as everyone, including me, watched the monitor for a sign that it worked. Dr. Davis shook his head before yelling again.

“Again! Clear!” He yelled and shocked Andrew again.

Unable to hold back my tears, I squeezed my hand to my chest. “Please, please, please, don’t die.”

The monitor started beeping normally and Andrew gasped for breath. I realized that I had been holding my breath and exhaling at the same moment. Dropping to my knees, I burst into tears.

“Let’s run some tests on him.” I heard Dr. Davis say, but I couldn’t stop crying.

A few moments later, Lily returned to my side and helped me to my feet. “Come on. He is fine, they took him down to run every possible test on him to find out what happened.”

Going into Andrew’s room, I still couldn’t stop crying. Lily sat me down on the chair in the room, then sat next to me on the arm. She rubbed my back as I cried, doing her best to comfort me.

I didn’t know how long we were in there, but sometime later, Andrew was wheeled back into the room. Jumping from the bed, I flung myself on him, careful not to hurt him. He squeezed his small arms around me as he joined me in crying.

“Veronica?” Dr. Davis’s voice filled the room a bit later.

Standing up, I saw a grave look on his face and knew that what he was about to tell me was bad. Placing a kiss on Andrew’s forehead, I follow Dr. Davis out into the hall. He seemed uncomfortable, so I knew it was going to be a lot worse than I thought.

“Just tell me.” I demanded, swiping at the tears still rolling down my face.

“His tumor is now malignant. Up until now, we have been lucky with it not spreading. In the past three weeks, since the last scan, it has become more aggressive. At this point, chemo and radiation are no longer effective. The best it is doing is slowing down the progression.” He explained.

I felt numb all over, but I couldn’t break down right now. My eyes traveled to look through the viewing window, of Andrew’s room. “What are our options?”

“Where it is located, you already knew it was inoperable. Now with how quickly it has spread, I am afraid that treatment options are not going to do much. If he is lucky, he might make it another six months. We can make him comfortable, or we can try the clinical trial.”

My head snapped at him. “I will not put him through the clinical trial. Every patient that has entered it, has died after the first treatment.”

“Then the best option we have is to make him comfortable. I am sorry I couldn’t give you better news.” He sounded sincere, but right now I felt pissed.

Unable to respond, I let him walk away as I stood there watching Andrew through the window. Lily looked up and saw me, so she slipped out into the hall with me. Telling her what the doctor told me, I kept my attention on my brother as I watched him breathe.

“There has to be another way.” She said, sounding just as panicked as I felt.

“I am not going to rest until I find it.” I told her, before going into the room, to spend time with Andrew.

Knowing I just missed my shift, when Lily returned later in the evening, I didn’t care at the moment. I needed the money, now more than ever, but I couldn’t deal with other patients right now. It was almost time for my shift at the bar, but I was afraid to leave Andrew.

“I promise I won’t leave his side. I talked to HR, and they said not to worry about your shifts here. They will pay you still since you still have sick days and vacation days to use up. Even if you don’t go to the bar, at least go for a walk or something. It isn’t good for you to be stressing this much.” Lily tried to reason with me.

Knowing she was right, I looked over at the laundry bag with my work clothes in it. Placing my hand against Andrew’s face, I just looked at how peaceful he looked asleep. He didn’t look like he was in pain or anything.

“I will try to work at the bar. I will be back in the morning, but if something goes wrong, let me know immediately.” I said to Lily as I grabbed my uniform and headed out of the room.

“I promise. I will stay with him all night.” She assured me once more before I left.

When I arrived at the bar, everyone noticed I wasn’t in a good mood. Rick didn’t tell me to take the night off, because he knew that working outside of the hospital helped ease my mind. At least at the bar, I wasn’t surrounded by the smell of the hospital.

After changing, I was making my way to the bar, attempting to smile, but it was futile. For the next hour, I managed to work on autopilot. Lyrek came into the bar and sat down in the place he had sat last night.

When I was making my way over to him, I overheard a female voice that stopped me in my tracks. “It is so sad that there is nothing they can do for him. He is so young. To have a brain tumor and a death sentence is dreadful. I feel wretched for Andrew and what he is going through.”

Looking over I saw one of the nurses that works on the pediatric floor. Frozen in place, I was sure all the blood drained from my face. She was talking to a group of people that I knew worked on another floor.

“Veronica? Are you okay?” I barely registered Lyrek talking to me.

Feeling angered, I slammed the dirty glass, I was holding, down on the counter. Stomping around the bar, I approached the table. It was like I was someone else entirely, I barely recognized myself as I smashed my hand on the table and got right in the nurse’s face.

“You have no right to be talking about a patient outside of the hospital, especially my brother!” I screamed, making a scene in the bar.

“I am so sorry Vicki!” The nurse tried to apologize but I was beyond pissed.

“You don’t get to call me Vicki! Only my brother has that right! Now, get out!” I yelled.

Not waiting for her to respond, I ran toward the back of the bar, in tears. I heard Lyrek’s voice call after me, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. Needing to get out, I shoved my way through the back door and crumbled on the pavement outside.

Since I was a little girl, I wanted to be married, but not like this. I thought I would find a good man that I could fall in love with, spend some time getting to know him, eventually move in with him, and later down the road possibly marry. Not meet a guy one night, move in with him the next night, get married the next morning, and completely miss out on the love aspect. When he offered to marry me, to save my brother, of course, I jumped at it. Did I do the right thing though? For all I knew, he was a bad guy and would treat me and my brother like crap. Lyrek-The very second we entered the room, where Andrew was, Veronica left my side to wrap her little brother in her arms. “How are you doing today?”“Great! I convinced the nurses to get me ice cream.” The kid beamed at Veronica, like she was his favorite person in the world.I had known her brother was young, but seeing him now, I didn’t realize how young. He couldn’t be more than ten. He looked so small and frail that I was surprised he didn’t break a bone when she hugged him.“Ice cream for breakfast? You know that isn’t good for you.” Veronica scolded him, even though she didn’t sound mad.“I also ate some toast.” He smiled at her.“Well then, that sounds much better. Is Lily still here?” She asked him, sitting next to him on the bed.“She said she had to go get some coffee and that she would be right back.” Andrew said, his eyes adverting to where I still stood by the door. “Who is he?”Veronica looked over her shoulder at me with a frown on her face. Veronica-After leaving Lyrek, I returned to Andrew. I had just arrived to see him being transferred to a wheelchair. His stuff had been cleared out of his room. I knew Lyrek had asked for a transfer, but I hadn’t expected it to be so quickly.I guess Lyrek’s name was a lot more powerful than I realized. I have to admit, it was nice to be able to get things done so quickly without needing to fight everyone. It wasn’t that I struggled a lot with getting Andrew the things he needed, but there had been times it had proven difficult.“Did you hear? I get to move to a new room. Lily said I get a room that looks like a real bedroom, with a bed and everything!” The excitement in Andrew’s voice nearly had me in tears.“I heard bud.” I smiled at him as one of the floor nurses started to wheel him out of the room.Normally I would take over with something like this, but I didn’t have a clue where we were going. Veronica-I had hoped that I would be able to get my stuff packed and get out before Lyrek showed up. If I had to guess, he had run after me considering I had barely started grabbing my things when I heard the front door open. Silently cursing myself, I started shoving the few clothes I had into my bag.“Veronica?” Lyrek shouted through the penthouse. Not wanting to answer him, I kept quiet as I continued grabbing my clothes out of the dresser. I don’t know why I decided to unpack last night. I should have just left everything alone until I could be sure this was going to work between us.I was just putting in the last article of clothing when Lyrek opened the bedroom door. Zipping up my bag, I grabbed the strap and then slung it over my shoulder. He was blocking the doorway so I couldn’t leave.“Please let me go. This was a mistake. Please let your grandfather know that I am sorry.” I said, not bothering to look him in the eye.“Just hold on a minute, will you? You don’t get to just

Lyrek-Raw desire rushed over me with every second I tasted her lips. From the moment I laid eyes on her, I have wanted to taste every inch of her. From the top of her head, down to the tips of her toes. She tasted of cinnamon and apples, making me hungry for more of her. Her hands roamed my torso with a kind of need that I felt deep into the depths of my soul. When I chased after her at the hospital, I was filled with unrecognizable panic. Now that she was in my arms, allowing me to taste her, touch her and explore her, I wasn’t going to waste a minute of it. Tightening my grip on her butt cheeks, I lifted her in my arms. Her legs circled my waist without pause.Keeping my mouth firmly against hers, I blindly moved through the house toward her bedroom. I would take her to my bed, but at this second, it was too far away. Veronica-Spending a few hours playing games, Andrew wore himself out. Helping him to bed, I was just finishing with tucking him in when Lyrek arrived. The look on Lyrek’s face didn’t seem concerning, so I didn’t see a reason to step into the hall with him beforehand. Settling myself on the side of the bed, I motioned for Lyrek to come in.“Andrew and I discussed it a bit and I think it should be okay to talk about the trial in front of him. Unless you still don’t have anything about it yet?” I spoke.“Actually, that was the exact reason I came up here. I learned more about it, so I figured I would give you the details. Veronica- Ten years later “Hurry up mom and dad! We are going to be late!” My nine-year-old daughter Lexi yelled as she ran ahead to the bar, where we were meeting everyone. It was now Christmas, and we had a tradition to meet at the bar every year. Rick still managed the bar, but he now did so with his husband, whom he met while he was in Europe. This year it was a little different from our usual get-together because this year Lily couldn’t join us. She was in Africa working with Doctors Without Borders. I was really proud of everything she has accomplished these last few years since graduating from medical school. The main person that I was looking forward to seeing was Andrew. He was in college now, studying to be a medical researcher. His life was relatively normal now, having been cancer free for ten years. I never thought he would have made it this far, but I was thankful every day that his illness was a thing of the past. I haven’t seen him since the school year started, b

Veronica-It wasn’t easy, but with the help of Lily, a team of wedding planners, and a lot of money, we managed to get the wedding I have been planning for the last few months up and going. It took us only forty-eight hours. The best part of it all, Lyrek’s grandfather was able to hold on.I had a feeling that the wedding was giving him the desire to live because I could tell by looking at him that he was fighting to stay alive. When I told him my plan it was a light flipped on in him and he now had the will to live. Lyrek tried to argue with me about rushing the wedding. He wanted me to have the wedding of my dreams, but I managed to win him over to my way of thinking after I told him that it wouldn’t be the wedding of my dreams without his grandfather here to celebrate it with us. After all, it had been because of his grandfather that we were together.I thought it over and concluded that even if he would have pursued me, I wouldn’t have been as willing to be with him at the time. Veronica-Waking up in Lyrek’s arms was the best thing in the world at this moment. After the last twenty-four hours, I have been more grateful to have him by my side. I wish he would have let me know what he was doing, but I understood why he kept me in the dark.Rolling over in bed to face him, I saw he was still sleeping. Taking a moment to admire his features, I smiled at how relaxed he looked. Moving my gaze to the other side of his body, I noticed Andrew was lying in bed next to him.I must have slept like a rock if I hadn’t noticed Andrew joining us in bed. Reaching over, I gently caressed the side of his face. His features weren’t as relaxed as Lyrek’s, yet he didn’t seem to be nearly as influenced by past events as I expected him to be.“Good morning.” Lyrek’s sleepy voice pulled me from getting too far into my thoughts.Tilting my head back, I looked up to see him smiling at me. “Good morning.” I repeated his words.“Are you hungry?” He asked, his tone soft and low.Instead

Veronica-I was beyond worried right now. As many times as I called Lyrek, it went straight to voicemail. I didn’t know what to do and even the police had to call in the FBI because they were getting nowhere. With nothing better to do, I have been pacing the lobby of the theater, trying to reach Lyrek. My nerves were a wreck. I didn’t think Lyrek would up and abandon me, so I couldn’t help but feel that something was very wrong. The Chief of Police also thought something was wrong and has been trying to track him down. He had one of his officers try calling every hospital in the area, including different police units. I wanted to call his lawyer, but I didn’t have the number.I couldn’t call his grandfather, because he wasn’t doing very well, and I didn’t want him to worry. Pacing back and forth was all I was good at right now. It wasn’t helping anything, aside from helping hold on to the little bit of calmness I had left. Finally, my phone rang, and I quickly looked at the screen. A

Lyrek-With no choice but to wait until their attention was away from Andrew, I kept myself hidden. The minutes were ticking by slower than I wanted. The men guarding Andrew were getting impatient, but I couldn’t move without putting him in danger.Looking across the room, I tried looking for Snake, but I couldn’t spot him. My hand tightened around the hilt of the dagger until my knuckles turned white. One of the men returned to the computer, while the other was pacing. If I was going to get Andrew out of here, I needed to do it soon. The moment I thought about it, there was a loud explosion coming from the other side of the factory. Both men moved in the direction of the explosion.“What the hell was that?” One of them asked.“Sounded like a bomb going off. This is an old factory so it could be just nothing, but I am going to go check it out. Stay here with the kid and keep trying to fix whatever is going on with the computer.” One of the men took off running and the other returned

Thanks to Snake, he made it so I could use my phone, but it was now a secure line, and it couldn’t be hacked or traced. I had to hand it to him, he really knew what he was doing.“Did you get the money?” She asked the moment she answered the phone.“I need a little more time, but I am getting closer. Have they contacted you again?” I asked my wife while I watched Snake type like a madman on the computer.“They called once since you left and told us that you better have the money soon or they were going to start hurting Andrew.” The fear in her voice was as clear as day and I knew we were running out of time.“I promised you that we will get him back. It wasn’t that I couldn’t get it, but it wasn’t like I had that kind of money laying around. When Lyrek did anything for us, he did it in a big way.Every time we went out, he made it obvious that he had money to spend. I wasn’t a huge fan that he was spending money so elaborately, but I couldn’t fault him either. His excuse was that he wanted us to enjoy everything life had to offer. No matter how much money he spent on me or Andrew, I was still not used to having someone take care of me to this degree.
