Lyrek-

“You’re good.” I chuckled, before sliding onto the bar stool next to me.

Before walking into this bar, I had no intention of flirting with a woman, but then I saw her. She had a beautiful smile, her complexion was slightly tanned and reminded me of warm honey. Her messy bun just made her look that much more attractive.

As she walked away, I couldn’t help but admire her slender figure with curves in all the right places. After the day I had, the last thing I wanted was to be hitting on a female that I knew wasn’t right for me. Then again, there was nothing wrong with flirting and looking.

When she returned to place my drink on the table, I decided to stay where I was at. Even though, originally, I had planned to hide in a back corner to drink away the stress of the day. I just flew in from California and the trip had been long and grueling.

First, they misplaced my luggage. Then, my grandfather gave me an ultimatum that I didn’t like. He had the audacity to tell me that if I didn’t get married before he died, I could kiss my inheritance goodbye.

It wasn’t that I needed the money, but I had planned to donate it to the hospital that I worked at, back in California. I took pride in my work and wanted to do more to help further researching cures for cancer.

The thing was, I didn’t want to get married just yet. Call me a fool or whatever, but I believed that marriage should be about love. My grandfather didn’t agree with me.

Maybe it was because he was dying, I don’t know. What I did know was that I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of holding my inheritance over my head and bending to his ways. Don’t get me wrong, I adored my grandfather.

He had been the one to raise me after my parents died in a car crash when I was fifteen. Now I am nearly thirty and my grandfather is telling me that he wants to die, knowing I won’t be alone after he is gone. In a way, I knew he was just trying to look out for me.

Watching Veronica as she worked, I noticed there was a sadness in her eyes, behind that beautiful smile of hers. I don’t know why, but thinking she was sad about something bothered me a great deal. Finishing my drink, I waved her over for a refill.

“Tell me, what is a girl like you, doing in a place like this?” I asked, hoping I could convince her to talk to me a little bit.

“Other than working? Waiting for handsome men to flirt with me. It makes my night.” She returned with a flirtatious smile.

Once again, I saw the sadness in her eyes, even though she did her best to mask it. I was a little stunned when she flirted right back, without missing a beat. It was difficult to tell if it was real or if she was putting on an act to be polite.

“Well then, I don’t know about the handsome part, but I could flirt with you all night if it made your night even a little bit better.” I didn’t know why I felt this need to flirt with her this much, but I must admit, I was enjoying it.

“I highly doubt you’re the kind of guy that doesn’t know how good looking he is.” She let out a laugh that made my heart skip a beat.

Everything about her was stunning. The most alluring thing about her, aside from her smile, had to be her eyes though. They were light blue but looked slightly grey. No doubt it was from the lighting in the bar.

Before I could stop myself, my eyes drifted to her left hand, which was ring free. Not wanting to be caught in the act, I forced my eyes back to her face. She didn’t seem to notice I had checked to see if she was married.

“I beg to differ. I am okay looking, not good.” Bringing my glass to my lips, I looked at her over the rim.

Her head turned to look at another customer that was calling her name. The silky appearance of her neck looked like it would be good to graze my lips over. I imagined she would also taste incredibly good.

She walked away to deal with the other customer, and I decided at that moment that it wasn’t a bad idea to flirt with her. She might not be the kind of girl I should marry, more than likely my grandfather would throw a fit about it. That didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy myself a bit.

It wasn’t like I would be in town much longer. Since I had no intention of giving in to my grandfather’s request, I planned to return home soon. Until then, I could find pleasure in the beautiful bartender.

I kept watching her as she worked, drawn to the way she interacted with the customers. She knew a lot of them by name and talked to them like they were friends. She would ask about their kids, their dogs, and even their husbands or wives.

I have been to many bars, but never have I met a bartender that can remember so many customers. She had a way with people that made it hard not to like her. Her smile was contagious as well.

On more than one occasion, I found myself smiling as she smiled at other people. That sadness I noticed never seemed to go away though. It only made me want to get to know her more.

“Can I help you with something?” A man moved to stand across from me, his eyes narrowed on me when I redirected my attention to him.

“I wouldn’t mind another refill.” I shrugged.

I wanted Veronica to return and help me, but she did look busy right now. Besides, I had no problem just watching her from a distance. Pushing my glass to the man, I noticed he wasn’t wearing the same uniform as the other bartenders.

Unlike the others, he wore a black button-up shirt, with his long sleeves rolled to his elbows and a dark blue tie around his collar. He didn’t take his eyes off me as he reached behind him and grabbed the bottle of scotch from the top shelf. Maybe he was the owner or a manager, it was hard to tell in places like this.

“I think after this, you should leave.” The man said, giving me a glare that said he was serious.

Keeping my cool, I looked him over to assess him. If I had to guess, he was maybe a few inches shorter than me and he looked exceptionally clean, femininely clean. I didn’t care what kind of sex others were attracted to, but I was getting the impression he wasn’t a straight shooter.

I don’t know what I did to piss him off, but he didn’t appear to be too fond of me. The glare he gave me was more than enough to clarify. It was also the way he stood defensively, like he was ready to move quickly if he had to.

“Mind if I ask what the issue is?” I kept my calm, waiting until he finished pouring my drink before sliding it back to me.

“You aren’t a familiar face, and I don’t like the way you are looking at one of my staff.” He admitted.

Turning my head, my eyes fell on Veronica for a moment. “I am not a creep if that is what you are hinting at. I just find that she has a beautiful smile. Is it wrong for me to look and find comfort in getting to know her?”

He narrowed his gaze on me once more, his arms crossing over his chest. “She has a lot going on right now and doesn’t need some guy coming in to break her heart. I think it is best for everyone that you just walk away.”

“Sorry man, I can’t do that.” I looked him dead in the eye and refused to budge an inch. “I have every intention of getting to know her. She intrigues me. You can throw me out, but I will make sure that I can come back. If I must, I will buy this bar, and then you won't be able to do a thing about it.”

I have never been one to throw my money around, but at the same time, I couldn’t let him challenge me the way he was. I didn’t plan to hurt her, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy her company while I was in town. She didn’t seem the type to let a guy get away with hurting her anyway.

I must have gotten to him with my statement because his eyes adverted to Veronica, and I could see the way his jaw clenched. If I had to take a guess, he was the bar owner, which meant he had something to lose if he stood in my way. Feeling bad about threatening him, I took a sip of my drink before speaking again.

“Look, I don’t believe in hurting women, nor do I have any intentions of doing so. I don’t know you and you don’t know me, but I want to get to know Veronica. I want to find the reason behind the sadness in her eyes and witness her smile which is very pure and rare. You can stand in my way all you want, but I am not one to back down from a challenge.”

His expression changed while I spoke, now looking at me as if he were considering me. The way he scrutinized me didn’t sit well with me, but I respected that he was just trying to look after her. Which only made me that much more interested in her.

“If you so much as hurt her, there isn’t enough money in the world that will protect you from me.” He finally said after a while, before walking away.

Chugging down the rest of my scotch, I looked over at the beautiful bartender again. Her eyes met mine and she moved toward my end of the bar. That smile of hers was plastered on her face and it was like every time I saw her, she grew more stunning.

“Would you like another?” She asked when she reached me.

“As much as I enjoy sitting here and getting a chance to monopolize your time, I think I should head out. I look forward to seeing you again.” I gave her a smile as I stood up and dug into my pocket for my wallet.

Pulling out a hundred-dollar bill, I slid it across the table. She grabbed the money and went to the register before returning with her hand out. I looked from her to her hand and shook my head.

“You keep it.” I told her.

“This is too much. I can’t accept this.” Her humbleness was a breath of fresh air, but I refused to take the money.

“You have more than earned it. You can return the favor and buy me a drink sometime.” I offered.

Her smile grew as she pulled her hand back and stuffed the money into her pocket. “I will do that. Please be safe on your way home tonight.”

Needing to force myself to turn around, I gave her another smile before pulling myself away. She intrigued me far more than I anticipated. The effort that it took to walk away from her without turning around was difficult.

Once I left the bar, I took a deep breath, taking in the fresh air, and started down the sidewalk. I couldn’t stop my eyes from traveling to the window just in hopes of catching another view of her. I saw her standing behind the bar, smiling at another customer.

Oh yeah, I was smitten for sure. Sighing, I continued down the sidewalk and walked the short distance to the penthouse I was living in. I was quite sure that no matter how hard I tried, I wouldn’t be able to get her out of my thoughts until the next time I saw her.

Veronica-Sitting next to Lyrek in the car, as we drove to the hospital, I couldn’t take my eyes off our marriage certificate. I was now married to a man I barely knew and now carried his last name. Which, up to an hour ago, I hadn’t known.“Are you okay?” Lyrek asked from the driver's seat.“I’m fine.” I lied. There was no way I was fine about any of this. Since I was a little girl, I wanted to be married, but not like this. I thought I would find a good man that I could fall in love with, spend some time getting to know him, eventually move in with him, and later down the road possibly marry. Not meet a guy one night, move in with him the next night, get married the next morning, and completely miss out on the love aspect. When he offered to marry me, to save my brother, of course, I jumped at it. Did I do the right thing though? For all I knew, he was a bad guy and would treat me and my brother like crap. He doesn’t even know that legally my brother is technically my son. That woul

Lyrek-The very second we entered the room, where Andrew was, Veronica left my side to wrap her little brother in her arms. “How are you doing today?”“Great! I convinced the nurses to get me ice cream.” The kid beamed at Veronica, like she was his favorite person in the world.I had known her brother was young, but seeing him now, I didn’t realize how young. He couldn’t be more than ten. He looked so small and frail that I was surprised he didn’t break a bone when she hugged him.“Ice cream for breakfast? You know that isn’t good for you.” Veronica scolded him, even though she didn’t sound mad.“I also ate some toast.” He smiled at her.“Well then, that sounds much better. Is Lily still here?” She asked him, sitting next to him on the bed.“She said she had to go get some coffee and that she would be right back.” Andrew said, his eyes adverting to where I still stood by the door. “Who is he?”Veronica looked over her shoulder at me with a frown on her face. Veronica-After leaving Lyrek, I returned to Andrew. I had just arrived to see him being transferred to a wheelchair. His stuff had been cleared out of his room. I knew Lyrek had asked for a transfer, but I hadn’t expected it to be so quickly.I guess Lyrek’s name was a lot more powerful than I realized. I have to admit, it was nice to be able to get things done so quickly without needing to fight everyone. It wasn’t that I struggled a lot with getting Andrew the things he needed, but there had been times it had proven difficult.“Did you hear? I get to move to a new room. Lily said I get a room that looks like a real bedroom, with a bed and everything!” The excitement in Andrew’s voice nearly had me in tears.“I heard bud.” I smiled at him as one of the floor nurses started to wheel him out of the room.Normally I would take over with something like this, but I didn’t have a clue where we were going. Veronica-I had hoped that I would be able to get my stuff packed and get out before Lyrek showed up. If I had to guess, he had run after me considering I had barely started grabbing my things when I heard the front door open. Silently cursing myself, I started shoving the few clothes I had into my bag.“Veronica?” Lyrek shouted through the penthouse. Not wanting to answer him, I kept quiet as I continued grabbing my clothes out of the dresser. I don’t know why I decided to unpack last night. I should have just left everything alone until I could be sure this was going to work between us.I was just putting in the last article of clothing when Lyrek opened the bedroom door. Zipping up my bag, I grabbed the strap and then slung it over my shoulder. He was blocking the doorway so I couldn’t leave.“Please let me go. This was a mistake. Please let your grandfather know that I am sorry.” I said, not bothering to look him in the eye.“Just hold on a minute, will you? You don’t get to just

From the top of her head, down to the tips of her toes. She tasted of cinnamon and apples, making me hungry for more of her. Veronica- Ten years later “Hurry up mom and dad! We are going to be late!” My nine-year-old daughter Lexi yelled as she ran ahead to the bar, where we were meeting everyone. It was now Christmas, and we had a tradition to meet at the bar every year. Rick still managed the bar, but he now did so with his husband, whom he met while he was in Europe. This year it was a little different from our usual get-together because this year Lily couldn’t join us. She was in Africa working with Doctors Without Borders. I was really proud of everything she has accomplished these last few years since graduating from medical school. The main person that I was looking forward to seeing was Andrew. He was in college now, studying to be a medical researcher. His life was relatively normal now, having been cancer free for ten years. I never thought he would have made it this far, but I was thankful every day that his illness was a thing of the past. I haven’t seen him since the school year started, b

Veronica-It wasn’t easy, but with the help of Lily, a team of wedding planners, and a lot of money, we managed to get the wedding I have been planning for the last few months up and going. It took us only forty-eight hours. The best part of it all, Lyrek’s grandfather was able to hold on.I had a feeling that the wedding was giving him the desire to live because I could tell by looking at him that he was fighting to stay alive. When I told him my plan it was a light flipped on in him and he now had the will to live. Lyrek tried to argue with me about rushing the wedding. He wanted me to have the wedding of my dreams, but I managed to win him over to my way of thinking after I told him that it wouldn’t be the wedding of my dreams without his grandfather here to celebrate it with us. After all, it had been because of his grandfather that we were together.I thought it over and concluded that even if he would have pursued me, I wouldn’t have been as willing to be with him at the time. Veronica-Waking up in Lyrek’s arms was the best thing in the world at this moment. After the last twenty-four hours, I have been more grateful to have him by my side. I wish he would have let me know what he was doing, but I understood why he kept me in the dark.Rolling over in bed to face him, I saw he was still sleeping. Taking a moment to admire his features, I smiled at how relaxed he looked. Moving my gaze to the other side of his body, I noticed Andrew was lying in bed next to him.I must have slept like a rock if I hadn’t noticed Andrew joining us in bed. Reaching over, I gently caressed the side of his face. His features weren’t as relaxed as Lyrek’s, yet he didn’t seem to be nearly as influenced by past events as I expected him to be.“Good morning.” Lyrek’s sleepy voice pulled me from getting too far into my thoughts.Tilting my head back, I looked up to see him smiling at me. “Good morning.” I repeated his words.“Are you hungry?” He asked, his tone soft and low.Instead

Veronica-I was beyond worried right now. As many times as I called Lyrek, it went straight to voicemail. I didn’t know what to do and even the police had to call in the FBI because they were getting nowhere. With nothing better to do, I have been pacing the lobby of the theater, trying to reach Lyrek. My nerves were a wreck. I didn’t think Lyrek would up and abandon me, so I couldn’t help but feel that something was very wrong. The Chief of Police also thought something was wrong and has been trying to track him down. He had one of his officers try calling every hospital in the area, including different police units. I wanted to call his lawyer, but I didn’t have the number.I couldn’t call his grandfather, because he wasn’t doing very well, and I didn’t want him to worry. Pacing back and forth was all I was good at right now. It wasn’t helping anything, aside from helping hold on to the little bit of calmness I had left. Finally, my phone rang, and I quickly looked at the screen. A

Lyrek-With no choice but to wait until their attention was away from Andrew, I kept myself hidden. The minutes were ticking by slower than I wanted. The men guarding Andrew were getting impatient, but I couldn’t move without putting him in danger.Looking across the room, I tried looking for Snake, but I couldn’t spot him. My hand tightened around the hilt of the dagger until my knuckles turned white. One of the men returned to the computer, while the other was pacing. If I was going to get Andrew out of here, I needed to do it soon. The moment I thought about it, there was a loud explosion coming from the other side of the factory. Both men moved in the direction of the explosion.“What the hell was that?” One of them asked.“Sounded like a bomb going off. This is an old factory so it could be just nothing, but I am going to go check it out. Stay here with the kid and keep trying to fix whatever is going on with the computer.” One of the men took off running and the other returned

Looking over his shoulder, I saw a map on one of the computer monitors with a blinking red dot. We weren’t very far from the location.Pulling out my cell phone, I dialed Veronica’s number. Thanks to Snake, he made it so I could use my phone, but it was now a secure line, and it couldn’t be hacked or traced. I had to hand it to him, he really knew what he was doing.“Did you get the money?” She asked the moment she answered the phone.“I need a little more time, but I am getting closer. Have they contacted you again?” I asked my wife while I watched Snake type like a madman on the computer.“They called once since you left and told us that you better have the money soon or they were going to start hurting Andrew.” The fear in her voice was as clear as day and I knew we were running out of time.“I promised you that we will get him back. Lyrek-“Where is my son?” Veronica asked the man that was on the phone.“Don’t worry about that right now. What is important is how you are going to come up with five hundred million dollars to get him back. If you don’t want him hurt or worse, I suggest you start calling the banks and get me my money.” The man said. With that amount of money, it was going to be difficult to produce. It wasn’t that I couldn’t get it, but it wasn’t like I had that kind of money laying around. Even if I went to the bank to withdraw it from my personal account and even take it from the foundation funds, it would take a long time.“I don’t have that kind of money!” Veronica was starting to become hysterical, which only fueled my anger.Stepping closer to her, I wrapped my arm around her in an attempt to comfort her. If it weren’t for Lyrek, I would have broken down the moment he told me.There was a lot of chaos going on currently as everyone in the theater was being questioned. While giving my statement to the police officers, Lyrek and I had to separate so he could also talk to them. I hated that in this situation everyone was a suspect, but I also didn’t care as long as Andrew was found.“Do you know of anyone that would have done this?” The police officer assigned to question me asked.“I was attacked a few months ago because the mugger was wanting money from me. Veronica-Three months later“Come on! The movie is about to start!” Andrew yelled as he raced ahead.I couldn’t help but laugh as Lyrek and I followed him into the theater. While I knew he was excited to be able to see the movie he had been waiting for, I didn’t know why he was in such a hurry. It wasn’t like there weren’t going to be any seats, being that Lyrek reserved the entire theater room for us.Over the past few months, things have been a little weird. Not in a bad way, but in a way that was still taking me some time to get used to. When Lyrek did anything for us, he did it in a big way.Every time we went out, he made it obvious that he had money to spend. I wasn’t a huge fan that he was spending money so elaborately, but I couldn’t fault him either. His excuse was that he wanted us to enjoy everything life had to offer. No matter how much money he spent on me or Andrew, I was still not used to having someone take care of me to this degree.
