I turned white at the thought of my husband in bed with another woman. Especially this one.
“Are you sleeping in the same bed?” I knew Leo saw to her personally but sleeping in the same bed was past unacceptable. It was out of line. “Don’t blame him, Claire. He was just so tired after caring for me last night.” She lets out a chuckle. Charlotte had no regard for me or my marriage and had taken every opportunity to make that clear. “Why are you calling again?” She asks as if I’m disturbing her although she answered my husband’s phone. “Please let Leo know that I’d like to meet him for dinner at that old restaurant we love when he wakes up.” I tried my best not to sound hurt as I tell her. It was my wedding anniversary, and he had run off to be with Charlotte once again. This time, even sleeping in her bed. “I’ll let him know. Happy Anniversary, Claire.” She muttered my name in disgust and reminded me of my anniversary just to mock me and remind me that on my anniversary, my husband had run to her side. Not only that but slept in her bed and had forgotten about me. “Thank -“ I start to say as Charlotte hangs up. I feel a heavy lump in my throat threatening to sink with my tears. I sat in bed alone for a moment and decided to get up and get dressed. I plan on telling Leo about my pregnancy today. Even if his love for me is outweighed by my love for him and his love for Charlotte. I walk to closet and begin dressing comfortable for the occasion and begin applying makeup to cover up my tired puffiness brought on by my tears. I then head over to Bennington - an old Dutch eatery we enjoyed going too and give my name for the reservation. It’s not a Michelin star location but it was where I first met Leo and he saved me from a little trouble I was having. I had been harassed by a group of men and he portrayed himself as my friend until I was able to leave safely. A few years later, I finally finished my courses and graduated from the most prestige architecture school in the country but was at a stand-still in starting my career as most companies sought a male figure for the position. After a pressure-led search, I found that Leo’s company had posted a job opportunity as the secretary to the president and applied. After one short interview, I was given an offer that I gladly accepted. I was excited to walk into his office on the very first day but he didn’t remember me. I expected him to at least recognize me and I was mildly disappointed to know that he didn’t. It probably didn’t helped that I was dressed like a boy in baggy clothes with a baseball hat. He had no idea of the admiration or love I held in my heart for him. I couldn’t tell him with the inferiority I felt. I sat there waiting at the restaurant. It was noon which when I had met him in his office for the first time - all those years ago. He knew my dedication to important times and would be here any moment. Only I’ve been waiting for over an hour and he hasn’t come. I decide to call him but I’m redirected to voicemail. So I resorted to call someone who I rarely spoke to and who had no interest in speaking to me. “Hi Emilia, do you where I can find Leo?” Emilia is Leo’s sister. This meaning she’s also a part of his elite and successful family who have never liked the idea of a secretary becoming a billionaire’s wife. “Of course, I do. He’s at our family home. I thought you would’ve accompanied him for the big celebration we’re hosting.” I furrow my brows in confusion. “What celebration?” Emilia answered in a condescending tone with a hint of amusement towards my confusion “Did Leonardo not tell you? Of course, he wouldn’t. Well, we are celebrating Charlotte’s big news. Happy Anniversary though.” I hear Emilia laugh for a moment and hang up as I try to ask what news she was referring to. Charlotte? I stood there feeling my heart sink. Leo had gone to Charlotte and missed our anniversary, and I was left feeling confused by Emilia’s information. I get up to leave hastily and call a cab - giving them the address for Leo’s family home. Once I arrived at the family home, I was answered by their butler holding the door open for me - explaining everyone had taken to the living room for an important announcement. I head to the living room where I see Charlotte sitting in her wheelchair surrounded by Leo’s family and friends - all in excitement and anticipation of her news. They all smiled, doted on and celebrated her with acceptance while I stood there as an unwanted guest or intruder.Charlotte saw me and began to smile but I knew the smile all too well. It’s a maniacal smile. “Oh, Claire is here.” She said this to make sure everyone knew that the unwanted guest she anticipated had arrived. A guest they can all share a common hatred for. I knew coming here wasn’t a good idea, but I had to speak to Leo. It was our anniversary, and I felt nothing short of abandoned along with our growing child inside me. As soon as she said this. I hear Leo’s mother chime in. “Who invited you?” She asks with a disgusted face as she places a protective hand on Charlotte’s shoulder. “I’m sorry to overturn your anniversary, Claire. I had some exciting news delivered today and Leonardo was just so excited to share it with everyone.” She said this in a sad innocent puppy expression, knowing it’d convince everyone in the room that I was not only an enemy and outsider but a jealous and insecure wife. It didn’t help that Leonardo stayed plastered to Charlotte’s side. No hesitation of
“Leo - “ I stop when I see Leo start to walk towards the door. I hurry and grab his arm. “I still have something to tell you.” Leo pulls his arm back and turns to me annoyed and rubbing the back of his neck as a symbol of him becoming aggravated.“I need to go help Charlotte. We can talk about whatever this is once we’re home.”“Please don’t go” I ask in the smallest voice, but Leo turns the doorknob and leaves the room muttering the cruelest of words.“Don’t put me in the position to choose” and without even a glance back at me - he exited. I didn’t get the chance to tell him about our baby. I stayed behind in the library for a few more minutes. The loneliness I felt reached further than the depth of this room. I wasn’t welcome here. I’m not wanted here. Even my husband doesn’t want me here. I should leave. So, I put every effort in calming myself before leaving the library. I then make my way from the library door to the foyer, hoping to escape without being seen or better yet - hu
I waited until we reached the top of the hill to place my foot in front of the wheel of my chair. I meant what I said to Claire. There was no one better suited for Leo than me. I just had to make Leo see that Claire was the wrong choice and remind him of how compatible we once were before this “accident”. Claire knows that I want Leo. If only she’d give up now and admit her impeding defeat. This woman was pathetic. After executing the first part of my plan, I watched her examine the wheels while holding onto my chair. She really didn’t want to hurt me but I had to make it seem otherwise if I wanted Leo. I used all my might to push her and throw off her balance. Watching her as she lost her grip on my chair and the horror of watching me fly down the hill - desperately trying to save me. This may hurt but I know once I scream - Leo will run to my side and he’d never believe this was an accident. Thus, driving the wedge between him and Claire. A wedge large enough to drive him into my a
I hear a blood curdling scream from outside my family home and run outside desperately to investigate what could be the cause although I knew that scream. It was Charlotte. She couldn’t have done something to hurt Charlotte. Was she capable of that? That isn’t the Claire I know. Claire is always compassionate, kind and helpful to anyone in need. I saw her researching medical publications about Charlotte’s condition once. She wouldn’t take her emotions towards me out on a disabled woman especially not Charlotte who has always been kind to her. I know I had put our fifth anniversary aside today but felt it only right to be by Charlotte’s side on this very important day. I had gotten her a gift and I had still planned on celebrating with her afterwards. Just as I descend the hill, I see Charlotte lying on the ground bleeding from her forehead and cowering from Claire who was trying to put her back into her wheelchair urgently. I can’t believe what I’m seeing? Claire must’ve done this pur
I have never seen this face on my husband - nonetheless directed at me. I begin rambling in an attempt to explain what happened and absolve myself of being accountable for any wrongdoings. It was an accident, and I was still trying to figure out exactly what happened myself. “This is not what it seems, Charlotte’s wheelchair got stuck at the top of the hill so I kneeled down to inspect it and felt a push. I tried to run after her, but I wasn’t fast enough.” I was hoping he would trust me or believe me. I would never do this. I was mistaken. Leonardo pushed me aside, causing me to fall onto the ground without a single glance to see if I was okay and rushed to Charlottes’ side. I covered my stomach and twisted in pain as I felt an intensifying pain. My baby! I look up to as Leo picks up Charlotte and begins to walk away. I struggled yo hastily rise yo my feet to go after him. I listened as he called his family’s private doctor to meet him at his family’s home. In just minutes,
I sit up frantically. I must’ve fainted and that frightened me but what was even more frightening was where I was. I was in a hospital bed, and I heard a man speaking with the doctor just outside the door. It sounded as though they were talking about me. Just as I tuned into their conversation,They come into the room. The doctor introduces himself and asks how I’m feeling. I give a quick reply. I was more curious as to who he was talking to.Just then I see the man who saved me walking in slowly, peaking around the corner before entering. It wasn’t Leo although I remember exactly who he is.“What are you doing here?” I should’ve said ‘thank you’ or ‘hello’ but shock same first. It was Jordan Taylor. We had graduated Architectural school together although I hadn’t seen him in many years after he took a job opportunity abroad. He was famous in school for his innovation. Jordan was one of the only people I’ve ever considered a friend. “Hey, I was out walking my dog Boomer when I saw
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Claire on the sidewalk in my neighborhood. I haven’t seen or spoken to Claire in over five years. Although I did think about her often. I was in the midst of walking up to her to say hello when I see her start to sway. It didn’t look good. I run to catch her mid-fall as Boomer (my dog) looks up in his own way of concern. This wasn’t good. I rushed back to my house with her in my arms and got us into the car after putting Boomer inside and sped to the hospital. What was she doing walking alone? Was she going to be okay? What happened to her? I hasted through every question as I rushed Claire to the hospital and carried her in. I went to get her bag which I had left in the car as they strolled her into a room and returned to her side. Leaving Claire like this wasn’t an option. I waited while the doctor assessed her and I spoke to him ensuring her safety. I think he only shared her health information - thinking I was her husband. I always liked Cla
I remember the first day Claire walked into my office. Her eyes were undeniably familiar. I knew I had seen them before. For a secretary, she had an extreme level professionalism which led me to forget about where I knew her from and focus on work - we worked well together. She was always in sync. One day, I received one of the many calls from my parents urging me to get married. I had every intention of marrying one day but it wasn’t a priority and having constant reminders was tiring. By the end of that conversation, I was spent and a migraine had already begun to surface. I had multiple girlfriends before and our relationships were always great in the beginning, that is until Charlotte would intervene. I was always available to Charlotte with no exceptions and that was intolerable for each one of them. None of them could accept the amount of attention I’d dedicate to her or the relationship I had with her. One of my exes went so far as to label Charlotte a ‘home wrecker’ and
I listen to the rain as I work on a few contractual agreements and architectural finishes in my home office. The pitter pattering reminding me of the early morning I left Claire’s side to run to Charlotte. The day everything began to change. I remember the disgruntled tone of voice I took to her as she asked if I had to leave. I acted poorly towards her in that moment and my behavior continued to tumble negatively throughout the day. I could never forget the way I treated her that day. It’s haunted me since. I sit back and decide to do some research on a doctor said to cure muscular atrophy through a surgical procedure that has yet to make medical clearing. The doctor was well-known in creating medical findings and had a unique approach to treating physical disabilities. I decide to email him in an attempt to get Claire’s hand assessed.‘Hello Dr. Asum, my name is Leonardo. My wife, Claire, was in a horrible accident a few months back and her hand was completely disfigured. After doi
I wake up to the sound of rain pattering on the bedroom window. It’s eeriness reminding me that today was the last day of my fearlessness. Charlotte would be out soon and her petition was still not granted. She would be free for at least another forty-eight hours meaning I would be in eminent danger for that time. I stare out the window and watch as the raindrops race to the bottom of the frame just like I had as a child. I rub my belly as the boys seem active this morning and head to the kitchen for a snack. I’m surprised to see Nathan is up and sitting at the table working on what looks like a contract.“Good morning.” I say softly as I approach.“Hey, what are you doing up so early?” He says softly with a smile as he turns his attention to me.“Just getting a snack. The boys are hungry again.” I didn’t feel the need to share my anxiety. Everyone was aware of what today would bring.“Here, I’ll grab them for you.” He says as he gets up quickly and brings me a few of my staples. “Le
I lay in bed enraged by Leo’s words and actions. How could he possibly keep choosing her? Why would he? I was everything that she wasn’t and I was more of status than the wretched peasant. She couldn’t even get the approval of his mother which I held for years. How could she amount to more than me or hold any value above me?“She’s kind, honest and caring. You will never be any of those things. You are a monster on the brink of destruction.” I hear my mother’s voice echo through the room as she sits on the chair across from the foot of my bed.“I just want him to pick me. The way he should have.” I argue.“How could anyone ever love you? You destroy everything you touch.” He says as she crosses her legs.“You don’t even know me. You died years ago.” “I know what I gave birth to. I’ve always known who you’d become.” She says intuitively.“You should have stayed dead.”“Oh darling, I am. I’ve been dead for years. I only exist in your mind.”“Like a parasite.” I hiss. I feel the room gr
It was nice to walk through Jas’ front doors Leo brought in some of the baby items we purchased today. I asked that he leave them by the door. It was better than him and Nathan not see each other for right now. Leo kissed my cheek before leaving and as I started to move the bags from the door to my room, I could hear footsteps hurrying down the stairs.“Woah, heavy lifting isn’t good for you right now. I’ll get those.” Before I can protest, Nathan is removing the bags from my hands and heading to my room.“Thanks Nathan.” I say he comes back to grab the other bags.“Sure thing. So - how was your day?” He asks as though he were curious.“It was fine. We shopped for the babies and went out to eat before our appointment.” I shrug. I didn’t know what else to say. I didn’t feel the need or want to mention my emotional episode at the restaurant or the intense kiss that happened in the exam room. “That’s nice. I was sort of worried about you.” He says as he scratches the back of his neck.“
It’s my fault? Did Charlotte really think that I was to blame for her wretched and vengeful behavior? I look over at the woman I had cared for - for majority of my life and I see a shell of who she once was. She was dressed in a sweatsuit, her hair was a mess and she looked bewildered.“I never asked you to harm Claire, Charlotte!” I slam my hands down on the table as I feel the heat rise to my ears. Mason puts a hand on my arm - a silent order to sit back down and get the answers I need. I sit back down as I continue. “Why did you attack Claire?”“I needed her to leave. And she just couldn’t take a hint.” She says calmly.“She had already left when you orchestrated her attack on both occasions.”I refute. Claire had left the house already and was contemplating divorce long before Charlotte’s attacks.“But you kept running back to her. She was parasitic to you, Leo. Don’t you see? She could never satisfy you. She’d simply feed off of your success and kindness.” She tried to convince me
After my useless therapy session, I head back to my room and grab a book left on the shelf in front of my bed. Oh great, I self-reflection book. I skim the pages as I wait for freedom. My insufferable mother had finally left and I was hoping it’d stay that way. I hear a knock at my door and the nurse enters before I even answer along with the two male nurses. “Charlotte, you have a visitor. Please follow me.” She turns to talk out and the male nurses wait until I am standing to follow me after her. I’m walked down a long hallway until we reach an empty room with a table and three chairs.“Have a sit. They’ll be coming in shortly.” She instructs. I sit down and watch as they leave the room. I sit in pure silence as I hear the door open and see the Chief Commissioner enter and Leonardo follow in behind him. A flutter begins in my heart and surely enough, I see my mother walk in behind them. She seems furious.“Hello Charlotte, I’m officer Mason and I’ve brought Leo with me. He wants to
I’m sitting in my office after having sent the testimonies directly over to the judge. He seemed pleased to see my diligence today. I sit back and wonder what could’ve happened to Charlotte to have made her so sour. To driver her off the edge to kill her own mother and hurt Claire so badly? It was unthinkable. My thought process was interrupted by the sound of my phone ringing. I see that Leo is calling me and answer promptly.“Hey, I’m at my office. Is everything all right?” I assume it has something to do with Claire and that thought alone made me nervous.“Claire is fine. I just dropped her off at Jasmine’s. I wanted to see if you had time to assist me in seeing Charlotte today.” He was serious. He had no intention of leaving this be and wanted to pursue an answer from her even if it hurt Claire.“Do you think that’s a good idea?” I ask as I text a few of my officers to inform them of Claire’s whereabouts to switch rotation as well as location.“I don’t know, man. There has to be a
It’s been another day. I’ll be out of here by tomorrow night and I couldn’t wait. My freedom meant that I could see Leonardo again and finalize my pursuits in ridding him of his parasitic partner.I sit on my bed eating my breakfast as I hear the nurse knock at the door.“Come in.” I groan as I continue eating. “Good morning Charlotte! Today, you have another therapy session. Would you like to head over or would you like to go later?” She asks with a pleasant smile. “I’ll go later.” Couldn’t she see that I was still eating? What is it with this place?“They want you to confess.” My mother’s voice rings in my ears as I see her appear at the foot of my bed. I ignore her as the nurse agrees to come back in an hour and leaves.“Why the hell do you want now?” I ask annoyingly.“A confession.” She says as she stands tall.“Yeah, that’s not for you to decide, is it? You’re dead.” I mock as I finish my food.“You will never rid yourself of me until you confess. She threatens. She seems to f
I had my hopes diminished when I heard Leo asking to speak to Charlotte but the shopping was helping. I could tell it was exhausting for him but it brought me joy so he continued until our cart was overflowing. I bought almost double of everything for both houses. It seemed like a good idea as we wouldn’t be living together when the boys arrived. I could see the relief on his face when I told him we were done. He was exhausted.“That was nice of them to include a diaper bag for you.” He says as he pushes the cart out to the parking lot. “And it was just the right color.” I smile in return. I see Leo’s driver pull up to the car. “Is he taking us somewhere?” I ask confused. Leo had drove us here.“No. I texted him to take these bags back to the house and assist Elena once the delivery crew arrived with the furniture. I didn’t think everything would fit in my car.” He jokes as Arthur comes to help put the bags in the trunk and backseat. He nods hello to me and I wave shyly at him.“Tha
