The mansion had sprung to life with the hustle and bustle of the staff. The dining room was set with fine china, the aroma of food being prepared filled the halls, and guest rooms were in the process of being cleaned. The preparations were almost complete. Chimes sounded throughout the mansion, announcing the arrival of the first guests.
"Master Wesley," an elderly man dressed in a butler's uniform called out.
Esper's father made his way back to the foyer, the girls trailing behind him. As they lined up, Esper tried to hide behind her friends. She was nervous about being in the presence of some of the world's most sought-after bachelors, but Saffron was having none of it. The brunette vampire took hold of her friend's arm and shoved her forward. Letting out a huff, Esper forfeited the battle and resigned to standing at the front with her father.
Once they were settled, the butler opened the door and ushered in the guests. Two males rushed into the warmth of the building, escaping the snowstorm. Esper smiled when she saw a familiar face among the men. It was her cousin, Asher. She wanted to run over and give him a hug but felt it might have been inappropriate in front of the other guest. Her smile quickly faded to a blush when Esper caught the piercing green gaze of the other arrival.
"Thank you for joining us for my daughter's Rites of the Winter Solstice and welcome to my home." Wesley and the girls bowed down respectfully. The two men returned the gesture and spoke in unison. "Thank you for allowing us to participate."
"Please follow one of the staff members up to your prepared rooms. There is still some time for you to settle in before dinner." Outstretching his arm, Wesley gestured towards the stairs. The young vampires nodded and followed their guide. The green-eyed bachelor looked back at Esper, catching one last glance before heading to his room.
As the first group disappeared from view, the chimes sounded once more. Two more suitors arrived, and the round of formalities started again. The two men were polar opposites of each other. One was a caramel-haired male with an air of innocence surrounding him, and the other had danger written all over him with his dyed maroon hair and face tattoos.
While the second group was escorted to their rooms, Wesley was deep in thought. There was still one more vampire he was expecting. Although he could understand him being late with how terrible the storms were this time of year. Deciding to wait a few extra minutes, Wesley instructed the girls to wait for him in the dining room. He stood around another ten minutes before heading to dinner. The last guest would arrive eventually.
When Wesley arrived, everyone had already been seated. He took his seat at the head of the table and looked around the room. To his left was his sister Quintin and his niece, Saffron, on his right was his daughter Esper and her friend Senna, and the suitors filled the remaining seats except for one.
"Sir, one more guest, has arrived," the ancient-looking butler announced. A young man stood next to the butler. He was tall at 6'3" and a slender athletic frame, his face covered by his snow dappled hood.
"My apologies for being late." The new vampire bowed respectfully towards Wesley.
"No worries, we were just settling in for dinner, please take a seat," he gestured towards the vacant seat. The vampire male nodded and headed towards the empty place setting. As he removed his jacket and handed it to the butler, the newcomer stole a quick glance at Esper. His crimson eyes bored into her, causing the young woman to look down out of nervousness.
With all of the guests accounted for, Wesley stood and cleared his throat.
"I would like to welcome you all to my home, and thank you for joining us in celebration of Esper's Rites of the Winter Solstice." Wesley began, gesturing towards his daughter. Esper stood and curtsied, keeping her eyes lowered. The guests stared in awe of her striking beauty.
"It is a rare occasion but also a great privilege to celebrate this ritual. With Esper being the first pureblood in generations, we have called upon you all for a possible pairing. This year is exceptionally unique. Esper has requested her ladies in waiting also join the search for a husband. I hope you will all oblige this request," Wesley continued. The audience nodded; this was an agreeable arrangement for them. Even if Esper was not their bride, being in her court of nobles was just as honorable.
"Now I would like to go around the table and have each of you introduce yourselves. I will start with myself; I am Wesley Beaurepaire, the great-grandson of the Beaurepaire ancients and head of the family." He bowed and sat back down.
Quintin stood up next and swept a loose chocolate lock off her shoulder. Saffron was almost the spitting image of this woman, down to her ruby red eyes. "My name is Quintin. I am Wesley's sister and matriarch of the Almasi nobles."
Saffron followed suit and introduced herself. "I am Saffron Almasi, Quintin's daughter and cousin of Esper." As she sat back down, a man with sandy blond hair and copper eyes stood up. He was on the taller side and had a runner's build.
"Allow me to introduce myself; I am Asher of the Almasi family. I am also the brother of Saffron and the son of Quintin. It is a pleasure to make all of your acquaintances." The rest of the guests followed his lead.
The gentleman sitting next to Asher looked as though he just stepped out of a rock music video. His hair was a maroon color with jagged layers down past his shoulders, and had a tribal tattoo above his right eye with a similar tattoo under his left. He cleared his throat and began his introduction. "Hello, my name is Remy Blythe, a noble and a professional model/musician."
Following Remy was the green-eyed bachelor from before. He was an intellectual with dark onyx hair with piercing eyes peeking through his glasses. He had the look of permanent annoyance plastered on his face, almost as if being here was a waste of his time. "I am Maxim Huiyan, descendent of the Xiafeng legacy. It is an honor to be a guest in your home."
Next was the late arrival. He had beautiful obsidian hair pulled into a loose ponytail with a few strands hanging in his face and deep crimson eyes. His facial features strong and but a hint of mystery behind his glowing eyes. "Allow me to apologize for my tardiness. The winter storms delayed the drive from Belarus. I am Seraph of the Solar family and a soldier of the Imperial Sentry."
The room paused in awe; the Solar family was the founder of the Imperial Sentry and tasked with protecting Yggdrasil's secrets. To have another pureblood in their presence was a great honor, especially one from such an esteemed family.
The next vampire stood up nervously. He had curly caramel locks, golden eyes, and a shorter frame than the giants surrounding him.
"Uh, hello, I'm Lucca Starling. It is a pleasure to meet you all." He bowed quickly and sat back down. Senna was the next to stand, fidgeting with her dress out of nervousness.
"Good evening, everyone. I am Senna Moffet, Lady Esper's childhood companion. It is a pleasure to meet you all." She bowed and sat back in her seat, her breathing a little shallow. Wanting to calm her friend, Esper leaned over and gave her a soft, reassuring squeeze on the arm.
"You did great," She whispered with a smile.
"Thanks," Senna replied with a smile of her own.
Now it was Esper's turn to shine. She took a deep breath to calm herself and stood.
"I am Esper Beaurepaire, daughter of Wesley and granddaughter of the Penne ancients. It is a pleasure to meet you all." Esper looked around and noticed all eyes on her. Her cheeks grew red from the attention. Trying to deflect the attention, Esper raised her glass for a toast. "Let us make a toast to new acquaintances and new bonds in the upcoming thirty days of night during the Winter Solstice."
Everyone raised their glasses and joined the toast. At the sound of the group cheer, kitchen staff came flowing from the kitchen with carts of food cornucopias. Most of the guests looked at the buffet with confusion, but a few had an excited gleam in their eyes.
"I hope you don't mind an unconventional dinner." Wesley set his glass back down on the table. "My daughter has a taste for human food. She has an exceptional talent for tweaking recipes to incorporate blood into them. We also prepared our finest blood wines for those who have a more traditional appetite."
The crowd took a few portions of different cuisines, trying to be polite towards their host. Not wanting to stand out, Esper tried to follow suit and only take a couple, but Senna's mother saw through her façade. The matronly woman piled an array of Esper's favorites onto the plate.
"Don't go starvin' yourself just to fit in, missy. They are here for you, so they will have to learn to accept all of you. Including that gluttonous appetite of yours." Senna's mother gave Esper's hair a tousle before tending to her daughter.
Trying to ignore all the not so subtle glances, Esper focused on eating. She followed the conversation, giving a nod or small laugh when appropriate. Esper would occasionally make polite eye contact with the speaker but always kept it brief.
Being in such a formal setting was more exhausting than she realized. Esper was cursing herself for not being more like Saffron. Now she was a social queen. Saffron thrived in moments like this. She always had intelligent input to add to the conversation. But then again, Saffron had been training her entire life for this moment. She wanted to be the socialite wife on the arm of her highly respected husband. Esper didn't think Saffron was shallow. Quite the opposite, really. Saffron just knew what she wanted in life.
The socialite life wasn't for Esper, though. She wanted to travel the world and discover its mysteries. She hoped whoever she chose as her mate would like to do the same.
After dinner, Esper excused herself and made her way outside to a balcony. She stood in the cold and braced her arms on the railing, collecting her thoughts and processing them. There were so many new faces and names, all of which were from the highest of nobility. Taking a deep breath, Esper slouched over the railing and exhaled slowly. "Long night?" A voice sounded from the doorway. She looked back to see the black-haired and red-eyed vampire approaching her. Esper recognized him as the late arrival. "You are Seraph, right?" Esper hoped she had guessed the proper name. He nodded, confirming she was correct. The small victory gave her a brief feeling of relief. "Not so much a long night, just a lot to take in." Esper sighed as she looked up towards the sky. It was so clear up in the lonely mountains. Her father had chosen the perfect location to
Esper let out a long yawn as she stretched, watching the soft pinks and purples dancing across the snow. The view was so enchanting and serene. She just sat there, watching it until her stomach let out a loud grumble. "Ugh, alright, breakfast it is." She got up and walked up to her door. Esper had a shocking surprise when she opened her door. Saffron was standing there, her arms folded across her chest, and her foot jutted out, giving Esper a disapproving look. "What," Esper asked sleepily, trying to rub the sleep from her eyes. "Did you really think I would let you go down to breakfast looking like that?" Saffron, more so stated than asked as she looked her companion over. Esper looked down at her clothes. She was wearing a band tee and sweats. "What's wrong with this?"
Sticking her hands in her pockets, Esper began her trek upstairs to the music room. With the alone time, she wanted to get in some cello practice. When she reached the door, Esper lingered and ran her fingers along the door frame. This was her favorite room in the entire house, a place where nothing mattered except music. Esper glided over to the center of the room where her cello rested in its stand. It looked regal with its shiny black shellac. She sat down, bringing the instrument toward her until it rested between her legs and against her shoulder. The vampire inhaled slowly and let the bow dance across the strings, playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The melody flowed through the hallways, the somber notes filling the houseguests' ears as they finished cleaning up. "What is that," Remy asked, his ears perking up at the sound. &
The mansion was full of life with preparations. The aroma of food filled the air along with the chatter of the staff. Chimes rang over the conversations, announcing the flow of guests arriving. Esper was constantly trotting towards the entry and welcoming guests as they entered. Senna and Saffron would then escort the guests to their room to allow them to get settled before dinner. In between guests, Esper would check in with the staff to see how they were progressing. She never knew how overwhelming being the head of a house could be. It made her wonder how her father managed to run a fine-tuned household and a business empire as well. He never ceased to amaze her. After several long strenuous hours of keeping on top of all the mansion's inner workings, Esper was finally allowed a small break to get ready for dinner. She took a deep breath and readied herself both mental
The ballroom doors were wide open, displaying the flurry of life inside. Esper had never seen the house this alive. There was dancing, chatter, and laughter; everyone seemed happy. The smiling faces gave her the confidence to face the crowd. Lucca gave Esper's hand a small uneasy squeeze as they entered. Feeling the squeeze, Esper returned the squeeze, providing the nervous male with some comfort. Once the two vampires reached the dancefloor's center, Lucca bowed low. "Will you allow me to have your first dance?" "I would love to," Esper replied as she took his hand once more. Lucca pulled Esper close and led her in a slow waltz across the dancefloor. He stepped on her feet a couple times, apologizing profusely with each occurrence, but he eventually found his rhythm. They swayed along with the music, having a g
Wanting to reach the sanctuary of her room before the panic attack hit, Esper raced out of the ballroom. She heard Maxim call out, but she didn't turn back. It was embarrassing for Esper to not make it through one conversation about her mother without crying. She didn't want Maxim to see her fall apart. Once she was in her room's safety, Esper immediately stripped out of her dress and threw it aside. She curled up in her bed as she tried to fight back the tears. All Esper wanted was for the night to end. A gentle knock sounded at the door, but Esper chose to ignore it. She didn't want anyone to see her in this state. The person knocked again; this time, more concerned. "Hun, can I come in," Saffron called out. Esper stayed silent. The brunette vampire sighed and opened the door anyway. "I am not leaving you alone in here to cry through the day."
Feeling multiple elbows in her sides, Esper grumbled as she woke up. Along with Lucca, she and her friends had stayed up well into the daylight hours watching Disney movies and fell asleep crowded on the couch at some point. Esper pried herself from cuddle puddle and stood up from the couch. While rubbing out some of the knots in her neck, she looked down at her companions. Lucca was missing. He probably felt uncomfortable sleeping in the same room with a bunch of girls. She passed his missing presence with a shrug. "Alright, sleeping beauties, time to wake up." Esper reached down and shook her friends. Saffron and Senna let out large yawns like they had just experienced the best sleep in existence. "You guys might want to hurry it up, it's already dark out." The silver-haired vampire pointed out the window for emphasis.
The sounds of soft cries stirred Esper from her sleep. She groggily opened her eyes and saw little Max standing at the side of the bed, rubbing at his eyes. “Oh, Max.” As Esper sat up, she wrapped the sheet around her torso like a makeshift dress then pulled the boy onto her lap. “How about you tell Mama what’s wrong?” “I had a bad dream.” Maxim hugged onto his mother tight as his small body shook. “I dreamt I was big and hurt you. I don’t want to hurt you, Mama.” “Oh, Sweetie.” Esper caressed Maxim’s raven locks and kissed the top of his head. “I’m sorry you had a bad dream.” Seeing the small boy distressed broke Esper’s heart. She knew the cause of his nightmare. Maxim was suffering from memory echoes, a common a
"You want to what?" Wesley was fuming. He couldn't wrap his head around what could possibly drive his daughter to take care of a person who had caused her so much pain, regardless of if they were a child now or not. "That is not a child. That is a monster who did unspeakable things to you." "Max is not a monster. He needs someone to teach him what real love is." Esper was not backing down. "Yggdrasil was able to see a spark of good in Max and gave him a second chance. Why can't you?" Seraph stood and stifled his laughter as he watched the father and daughter go back and forth. Even Esper wasn't actually his daughter; she still wanted his blessing and approval. Not understanding the heated argument, Maxim ran over to Esper and hugged her leg. He looked up at Wesley and stuck out his lip, making as stern a face as he could. "Don't yell at Mama!" Wesley paused from the toddler's words and looked down at him, then back up at Esper. He could already see the bond between mother and s
A warm breeze stirred up the grass around Seraph and Esper as they sat in the garden of ruins, enjoying the sun. They were propped up against one of the stone columns with Esper between Seraph's legs and her head resting on his chest. "So, you remember everything now?" Seraph laced his fingers with Esper's and brought them up to his mouth to kiss them. "Kind of." Esper shifted a bit to look up at her mate. "The memories are extremely vibrant and can be a little overwhelming when I try to recall too much, but I think it's all there." "Well, don't try too hard." Seraph tilted his head down and kissed the top of Esper's head. "You've been through a lot." "So, have you." Esper reached up with her free hand and ran her fingers through Seraph's black hair. "I can't arg
Lucien’s maniacal laughter echoed throughout the grand chamber of the World Tree cloister. He was standing atop a pile of spriggan corpses, yanking on their limbs and breaking them as if they were twigs. “Are you having fun yet, Yggdrasil?” Lucien hopped off of the pile and walked over to the World Tree. He bent over and knocked on the trunk. “If you don’t send out another one of your little tree witches to entertain my new powers, I’m going to start burning your real body here. I wonder how long it will take the flames to reach your heart?” “Is that how you treat your creator?” The female’s voice set Lucien off. He turned around to see Esper pushing herself up off the ground. How was she still alive and moving? Even with a vampire’s healing abilities, the woman’s broken back would
"SERAPH!" Esper let out a blood-curdling scream as she watched her mate crumple to the ground. Becoming overwhelmed with a blinding rage, Esper pushed herself off the ground. Her breathing was erratic, and her body shook with uncontrollable anger. Lucien had just killed her mate, and she was going to make him pay. In a mad flurry, she charged at Lucien. The white-haired male smirked and back-handed her as if Esper was nothing but a fly, sending her tumbling across the ground. She stood up on shaky legs and let out a frustrated roar before rushing him again. Much to Lucien's amusement, Esper came at him head-on. He was almost within her grasp when Lucien kicked her in the ribs. His leg collided into her side with a tremendous force and sent her flying through the air. Her body crashed into one of the murals, the painted stone crumbling around her. &nbs
"Seraph?" Esper looked at the weeping wound with horror. Without so much as a wince, Seraph reached back and ripped the sword out of his back. A menacing look formed on his face as he turned around slowly and tucked Esper behind him. Standing before Seraph was Maxim's pack of mutant werewolves. "If you are going to stab me, then do yourself a favor and try to kill me." Seraph rolled his healing shoulder and took a few practice swings with the sword before chopping off the assailant's head. He then sneered at the rest of the pack. "Didn't your master teach you that wounded animals are far more dangerous than the hunter?" The remaining beasts snarled furiously at the man and came charging towards him. Taking a protective stance, Seraph guarded Esper against the werewolves. He wasn't going to let anyone take her away ever again—espec
Esper's breath was heavy and panicked as she ran through the dark woods. She paused momentarily to gain her bearings but started running once more when she heard Maxim's laughter echo throughout the forest. Esper needed to get as far away as possible. She would not be caught by him again. The vine-covered hideaway was within her eyesight when Esper felt someone tackle her to the ground. The attacker flipped her around, and she was forced to face Maxim. "I finally found you, Kitten." The crazed glow ran rampant in Maxim's eyes as his gaze bored into Esper. "And now I'm coming for you." Maxim bared his fangs and bit down on to Esper's shoulder. Esper awoke with a scream. She ripped away the bedding and frantically ran down the breezeway towards Seraph's bed chambers. Her cries echoed througho
"Are you sure you are going to be okay while I'm gone?" Ronnie walked out of her closet with an armful of clothes and tossed them on the bed. "Ronnie, for the thousandth time, yes." Esper was sitting on the bed, folding her cousin's clothes and placing them in suitcases. "I don't want you worrying about me while you are on this trip. Just focus on having fun. I am going to be just fine." "I don't like the idea of leaving you here with him alone." Ronnie sat on the bed across from Esper and took up some of the clothes to help fold. "It won't be just Seraph and I. Dad will still be here," Esper offered. "Well, I still don't like it." Ronnie crossed her arms over her chest and stuck her lower lip out as she pouted. Esper couldn't help but laugh at her cousin's display. Ronnie had spen
Esper felt something nudging at her shoulder. Not quite ready to wake, she slapped at the annoyance. Her hand was met by a solid thud and thick fur. She opened her eyes and was met by the crystal blue stare of the stag. The animal was clearly not amused with Esper and huffed in her face. “I’m so sorry, boy. I forgot that I fell asleep out here.” Esper pet the stag’s forehead. She looked up at the sky and saw the moon was still out. Even if it had only been for an hour or two, Esper felt well rested after the nap. “Think you can help me find my way back?” The stag nodded in response to Esper’s request. Pushing herself up from the ground, Esper stood and let out a stretch. She was about to walk out the door, but something tugged at her sleeve. The young woman turned around and saw the stag kneeling before her
