After dinner, Esper excused herself and made her way outside to a balcony. She stood in the cold and braced her arms on the railing, collecting her thoughts and processing them. There were so many new faces and names, all of which were from the highest of nobility. Taking a deep breath, Esper slouched over the railing and exhaled slowly.
"Long night?" A voice sounded from the doorway. She looked back to see the black-haired and red-eyed vampire approaching her. Esper recognized him as the late arrival.
"You are Seraph, right?" Esper hoped she had guessed the proper name. He nodded, confirming she was correct. The small victory gave her a brief feeling of relief.
"Not so much a long night, just a lot to take in." Esper sighed as she looked up towards the sky. It was so clear up in the lonely mountains. Her father had chosen the perfect location to claim as his homestead—no rush of cars in the city, just pure serenity.
"You shouldn't worry. Just relax and go with the flow. Don't let the stress get to you." Seraph reached over and tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear. "Just listen to what your heart says."
Esper tinted pink from the small action. She knew the vampire male was right. If she was continuously stressing, she wouldn't listen to her instincts. Esper needed to enjoy herself and relax.
"You are right, but it still doesn't mean I won't worry." She pushed off of the railing to thoroughly look at him. Seraph was stunning, his bone structure was strong, but his face seemed so gentle, almost familiar. But what drew Esper in the most were his deep crimson eyes. They were her favorite part of a person. She believed you could tell a lot about somebody through their eyes.
"In time, you won't." Seraph gave her a soft smile. The grin took Esper's breath away and changed her mind. Eyes were now her second favorite part of a person, Seraph's smile currently ranked number one.
"Come, let's go inside before the snow starts up again, and you catch a chill," Seraph suggested. He outstretched his hand and offered it to Esper. She nodded and placed her hand in his. When she touched his skin, Esper felt sparks shoot up her arm. Blaming the shock on static electricity, she put her hand in Seraph's and let the man lead her back inside.
The rest of the group was sitting in a lounge, all chatting. Wesley was leading the conversation, going over the upcoming events. Esper glanced around and found her favorite chair empty. She discreetly took the seat and curled her legs up into the chair.
"Later this week, there will be a ball to officially start the Rites. Your families will be attending as well as members of the high council. The second one will be when the girls choose their mates, celebrating their pairing. Other than that, you are free to roam the grounds. I'm sure the girls would be more than happy to show you around."
Everyone listened intently to Wesley, even Esper. He went on, giving a detailed verbal tour of the grounds, going over the libraries, kitchen, indoor and outdoor gardens, and various recreational rooms.
"And one final item. I think it goes without saying that the exchange of each other's blood is strictly forbidden until the closing ceremony when we announce the pairings." Wesley gave all of the young vampires a stern look.
The sharing of blood was only reserved for pairings because it wasn't just sharing their life essence. A pureblood was able to share their powers with those who consumed their blood. If a vampire wasn't strong enough to control themselves, they could enter a frenzied state.
As the conversation came it an end, Wesley excused himself, letting the young vampires mingle amongst themselves. They all sat in silence; no one really sure what to do or say. As the moment became awkward, Maxim stood up, pushing his glasses back into place. He walked over to Esper and held his hand out to her.
"Would you do me the honor of joining me on a walk, Lady Esper?" Everyone looked at him, completely stunned by his boldness. Esper took in a slow breath and placed her hand in his.
"Um, sure." She stood up with his help and followed Maxim out of the room, feeling everyone's eyes follow them. They walked through the hallways in silence until they were standing outside in a snow-filled garden. When they were a safe distance from the doorway, Maxim let go of her hand and faced Esper.
"I apologize for taking you away from the group, but if I want to sway you towards my direction, I need to spend time with you alone." So that's what this was about, she thought. Esper shook her head in response to his apology. She did find it sweet, but it was unnecessary.
"There is no need to apologize. To get to know one another, being alone is completely understandable. There are fewer distractions and no audience." Maxim nodded in agreement.
Deciding to take the lead, Esper crossed her arms behind her back and started wandering around. They walked in silence as Esper led Maxim through the snowy pathways.
"So, what do you like to do," Esper asked, breaking the silence at last. She turned to face him again and walked backward as they talked.
"Well, I am the head of finances for my family's enterprise; I draw up the statistics for future growth and development. I handle the financial accounts and all potential investments."
Esper gave him a strange look. "That's not exactly what I meant."
"What do you mean," Maxim asked, slightly confused. "That is what I like to do."
"That isn't any fun." She chuckled at his seriousness.
"Then what do you consider fun?" He inquired.
"Well." Esper paused for a moment and looked around. A huge grin took over her face as she thought of a wicked idea. She sneakily grabbed some snow from a bush as they walked and formed it into a ball behind her back. "I like to do stuff like this."
Esper threw the snowball, laughing as it splattered across her victim's chest. Maxim pushed his glasses back into place again and swatted the snow away. He let out a slight chuckle once he was all cleaned up. "You are so dead."
Esper took off running as he started forming a snowball. She ducked behind a bush as he threw it, narrowly escaping. She quickly began molding a few more balls and poked up from behind the bush and promptly threw them, a few of them grazing Maxim's shoulder. Their back and forth went on for several minutes. They each had gotten a couple of decent shots on one another, but most were misses.
Having run out of premade snowballs, Esper ducked behind another bush and began assembling a bundle. When she poked her head back up from resupplying her ammunition, she looked around confused. Maxim had disappeared.
"Maxim," she called out, but there was no response. She stood up and looked around but, Esper couldn't find him anywhere. When she was about to call out again, Maxim popped out from behind a bush. He tackled her to the ground, and the two erupted into laughter as they tumbled downwards. They slowly stopped laughing and locked eyes with each other.
"How was that for fun," Maxim asked, slightly out of breath.
"It was a good start." Esper gave him a soft smile. He slowly moved his head closer to hers, his hair softly dancing upon her skin. He pulled back a little, wiping some snow from Esper's ivory skin before leaning down once more for a kiss. A voice shouted out, shattering the moment and atmosphere between the two.
"Hey, what is going on out here?" A female voice called out. They looked up from behind the bush and saw everyone outside. Saffron stood at the front of the group, tossing a snowball up in the air menacingly.
"Did you really think you could have a snowball fight without us knowing?" Saffron shouted, giving Esper a devious smile. With lightning speed, Saffron threw the snowball right into Esper's face. Everyone took this as the signal to start and ran out to the garden, taking tactical positions. Snowballs were soon raining on Maxim and Esper as they ducked behind the bush again for cover.
"Oh, this is so on!" Esper declared. Her body trembled with excitement and adrenaline. Esper flashed Maxim a mischievous grin as a surge of power began emitting from her. When it came to athletic feats, she was very competitive. Snowballs formed from the snow around them instantly and began floating in the air. The young female walked from the bush with at least thirty icy spheres orbiting around her.
Everyone looked in awe at the magical sight. Well, everyone except her friends. Senna shouted at her friend, who was clearly showing off. "Esper, that's cheating. Not everyone has an ice affinity!"
"All is fair in a snowball war," Esper shouted back and began laughing maniacally as she launched her squadron of snowballs at everyone visible.
"Well, if that's the case," Remy yelled, his maroon hair flying as he ran to a massive snow pile. "Then take this."
The snow started forming into a small army of snowmen, flinging snowballs in every direction. Their snowball fight lasted for hours, Remy and his army of snowmen claiming victory by a landslide.
The sun began to rise, and everyone decided it was best to head inside. Maxim approached Esper again, hoping to escort her to her quarters.
"I appreciate the offer," Esper mused. "But I don't think I am quite ready for everyone to know where my bedroom is. But how about we compromise and I let you take me as far as the top of the stairs?"
"Your terms are agreeable." Maxim placed his hand on Esper's lower back as they walked back to the house. The small but intimate touch made Esper's face warm. She was going to have to get used to male attention in the following month.
When they reached the top of the stairs, Esper turned to face Maxim. "Well, this is my stop. It was a pleasure getting to know you, Maxim."
"The pleasure was mine, Lady Esper." Maxim grasped her hand and placed a gentle kiss on her knuckles. "I look forward to our next meeting."
Giving a brief wave, Esper turned and headed towards her room. When she got into her room, she let out a big sigh of relief—finally, a little time for herself. Changing into comfortable clothes, Esper hopped onto her bed to do a little reading before catching some shut-eye.
Esper let out a long yawn as she stretched, watching the soft pinks and purples dancing across the snow. The view was so enchanting and serene. She just sat there, watching it until her stomach let out a loud grumble. "Ugh, alright, breakfast it is." She got up and walked up to her door. Esper had a shocking surprise when she opened her door. Saffron was standing there, her arms folded across her chest, and her foot jutted out, giving Esper a disapproving look. "What," Esper asked sleepily, trying to rub the sleep from her eyes. "Did you really think I would let you go down to breakfast looking like that?" Saffron, more so stated than asked as she looked her companion over. Esper looked down at her clothes. She was wearing a band tee and sweats. "What's wrong with this?"
Sticking her hands in her pockets, Esper began her trek upstairs to the music room. With the alone time, she wanted to get in some cello practice. When she reached the door, Esper lingered and ran her fingers along the door frame. This was her favorite room in the entire house, a place where nothing mattered except music. Esper glided over to the center of the room where her cello rested in its stand. It looked regal with its shiny black shellac. She sat down, bringing the instrument toward her until it rested between her legs and against her shoulder. The vampire inhaled slowly and let the bow dance across the strings, playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The melody flowed through the hallways, the somber notes filling the houseguests' ears as they finished cleaning up. "What is that," Remy asked, his ears perking up at the sound. &
The mansion was full of life with preparations. The aroma of food filled the air along with the chatter of the staff. Chimes rang over the conversations, announcing the flow of guests arriving. Esper was constantly trotting towards the entry and welcoming guests as they entered. Senna and Saffron would then escort the guests to their room to allow them to get settled before dinner. In between guests, Esper would check in with the staff to see how they were progressing. She never knew how overwhelming being the head of a house could be. It made her wonder how her father managed to run a fine-tuned household and a business empire as well. He never ceased to amaze her. After several long strenuous hours of keeping on top of all the mansion's inner workings, Esper was finally allowed a small break to get ready for dinner. She took a deep breath and readied herself both mental
The ballroom doors were wide open, displaying the flurry of life inside. Esper had never seen the house this alive. There was dancing, chatter, and laughter; everyone seemed happy. The smiling faces gave her the confidence to face the crowd. Lucca gave Esper's hand a small uneasy squeeze as they entered. Feeling the squeeze, Esper returned the squeeze, providing the nervous male with some comfort. Once the two vampires reached the dancefloor's center, Lucca bowed low. "Will you allow me to have your first dance?" "I would love to," Esper replied as she took his hand once more. Lucca pulled Esper close and led her in a slow waltz across the dancefloor. He stepped on her feet a couple times, apologizing profusely with each occurrence, but he eventually found his rhythm. They swayed along with the music, having a g
Wanting to reach the sanctuary of her room before the panic attack hit, Esper raced out of the ballroom. She heard Maxim call out, but she didn't turn back. It was embarrassing for Esper to not make it through one conversation about her mother without crying. She didn't want Maxim to see her fall apart. Once she was in her room's safety, Esper immediately stripped out of her dress and threw it aside. She curled up in her bed as she tried to fight back the tears. All Esper wanted was for the night to end. A gentle knock sounded at the door, but Esper chose to ignore it. She didn't want anyone to see her in this state. The person knocked again; this time, more concerned. "Hun, can I come in," Saffron called out. Esper stayed silent. The brunette vampire sighed and opened the door anyway. "I am not leaving you alone in here to cry through the day."
Feeling multiple elbows in her sides, Esper grumbled as she woke up. Along with Lucca, she and her friends had stayed up well into the daylight hours watching Disney movies and fell asleep crowded on the couch at some point. Esper pried herself from cuddle puddle and stood up from the couch. While rubbing out some of the knots in her neck, she looked down at her companions. Lucca was missing. He probably felt uncomfortable sleeping in the same room with a bunch of girls. She passed his missing presence with a shrug. "Alright, sleeping beauties, time to wake up." Esper reached down and shook her friends. Saffron and Senna let out large yawns like they had just experienced the best sleep in existence. "You guys might want to hurry it up, it's already dark out." The silver-haired vampire pointed out the window for emphasis.
The trio made their way to the blood lounge. When they entered, the remaining young adult vampires were lounging about and chatting. "Saffron, Senna," Esper announced. "It's time for Code Rose." Saffron immediately jumped up and squealed, her curly chocolate locks bouncing with excitement. It filled her with joy that Esper was following through with the recommendation. The ecstatic female immediately took command. "Esper, you are in charge of setting up the theater. Senna, you are in charge of getting the tissues, blankets, and pillows. I am going to go get the snacks." Saffron started running towards the door but then stopped and turned around. "Y'all might want to get into some comfortable clothes and maybe something for notes. You are all in for a long night." With that, Saffron ran out. The rest of the group followed suit and started their designated tasks. After returning
The sounds of soft cries stirred Esper from her sleep. She groggily opened her eyes and saw little Max standing at the side of the bed, rubbing at his eyes. “Oh, Max.” As Esper sat up, she wrapped the sheet around her torso like a makeshift dress then pulled the boy onto her lap. “How about you tell Mama what’s wrong?” “I had a bad dream.” Maxim hugged onto his mother tight as his small body shook. “I dreamt I was big and hurt you. I don’t want to hurt you, Mama.” “Oh, Sweetie.” Esper caressed Maxim’s raven locks and kissed the top of his head. “I’m sorry you had a bad dream.” Seeing the small boy distressed broke Esper’s heart. She knew the cause of his nightmare. Maxim was suffering from memory echoes, a common a
"You want to what?" Wesley was fuming. He couldn't wrap his head around what could possibly drive his daughter to take care of a person who had caused her so much pain, regardless of if they were a child now or not. "That is not a child. That is a monster who did unspeakable things to you." "Max is not a monster. He needs someone to teach him what real love is." Esper was not backing down. "Yggdrasil was able to see a spark of good in Max and gave him a second chance. Why can't you?" Seraph stood and stifled his laughter as he watched the father and daughter go back and forth. Even Esper wasn't actually his daughter; she still wanted his blessing and approval. Not understanding the heated argument, Maxim ran over to Esper and hugged her leg. He looked up at Wesley and stuck out his lip, making as stern a face as he could. "Don't yell at Mama!" Wesley paused from the toddler's words and looked down at him, then back up at Esper. He could already see the bond between mother and s
A warm breeze stirred up the grass around Seraph and Esper as they sat in the garden of ruins, enjoying the sun. They were propped up against one of the stone columns with Esper between Seraph's legs and her head resting on his chest. "So, you remember everything now?" Seraph laced his fingers with Esper's and brought them up to his mouth to kiss them. "Kind of." Esper shifted a bit to look up at her mate. "The memories are extremely vibrant and can be a little overwhelming when I try to recall too much, but I think it's all there." "Well, don't try too hard." Seraph tilted his head down and kissed the top of Esper's head. "You've been through a lot." "So, have you." Esper reached up with her free hand and ran her fingers through Seraph's black hair. "I can't arg
Lucien’s maniacal laughter echoed throughout the grand chamber of the World Tree cloister. He was standing atop a pile of spriggan corpses, yanking on their limbs and breaking them as if they were twigs. “Are you having fun yet, Yggdrasil?” Lucien hopped off of the pile and walked over to the World Tree. He bent over and knocked on the trunk. “If you don’t send out another one of your little tree witches to entertain my new powers, I’m going to start burning your real body here. I wonder how long it will take the flames to reach your heart?” “Is that how you treat your creator?” The female’s voice set Lucien off. He turned around to see Esper pushing herself up off the ground. How was she still alive and moving? Even with a vampire’s healing abilities, the woman’s broken back would
"SERAPH!" Esper let out a blood-curdling scream as she watched her mate crumple to the ground. Becoming overwhelmed with a blinding rage, Esper pushed herself off the ground. Her breathing was erratic, and her body shook with uncontrollable anger. Lucien had just killed her mate, and she was going to make him pay. In a mad flurry, she charged at Lucien. The white-haired male smirked and back-handed her as if Esper was nothing but a fly, sending her tumbling across the ground. She stood up on shaky legs and let out a frustrated roar before rushing him again. Much to Lucien's amusement, Esper came at him head-on. He was almost within her grasp when Lucien kicked her in the ribs. His leg collided into her side with a tremendous force and sent her flying through the air. Her body crashed into one of the murals, the painted stone crumbling around her. &nbs
"Seraph?" Esper looked at the weeping wound with horror. Without so much as a wince, Seraph reached back and ripped the sword out of his back. A menacing look formed on his face as he turned around slowly and tucked Esper behind him. Standing before Seraph was Maxim's pack of mutant werewolves. "If you are going to stab me, then do yourself a favor and try to kill me." Seraph rolled his healing shoulder and took a few practice swings with the sword before chopping off the assailant's head. He then sneered at the rest of the pack. "Didn't your master teach you that wounded animals are far more dangerous than the hunter?" The remaining beasts snarled furiously at the man and came charging towards him. Taking a protective stance, Seraph guarded Esper against the werewolves. He wasn't going to let anyone take her away ever again—espec
Esper's breath was heavy and panicked as she ran through the dark woods. She paused momentarily to gain her bearings but started running once more when she heard Maxim's laughter echo throughout the forest. Esper needed to get as far away as possible. She would not be caught by him again. The vine-covered hideaway was within her eyesight when Esper felt someone tackle her to the ground. The attacker flipped her around, and she was forced to face Maxim. "I finally found you, Kitten." The crazed glow ran rampant in Maxim's eyes as his gaze bored into Esper. "And now I'm coming for you." Maxim bared his fangs and bit down on to Esper's shoulder. Esper awoke with a scream. She ripped away the bedding and frantically ran down the breezeway towards Seraph's bed chambers. Her cries echoed througho
"Are you sure you are going to be okay while I'm gone?" Ronnie walked out of her closet with an armful of clothes and tossed them on the bed. "Ronnie, for the thousandth time, yes." Esper was sitting on the bed, folding her cousin's clothes and placing them in suitcases. "I don't want you worrying about me while you are on this trip. Just focus on having fun. I am going to be just fine." "I don't like the idea of leaving you here with him alone." Ronnie sat on the bed across from Esper and took up some of the clothes to help fold. "It won't be just Seraph and I. Dad will still be here," Esper offered. "Well, I still don't like it." Ronnie crossed her arms over her chest and stuck her lower lip out as she pouted. Esper couldn't help but laugh at her cousin's display. Ronnie had spen
Esper felt something nudging at her shoulder. Not quite ready to wake, she slapped at the annoyance. Her hand was met by a solid thud and thick fur. She opened her eyes and was met by the crystal blue stare of the stag. The animal was clearly not amused with Esper and huffed in her face. “I’m so sorry, boy. I forgot that I fell asleep out here.” Esper pet the stag’s forehead. She looked up at the sky and saw the moon was still out. Even if it had only been for an hour or two, Esper felt well rested after the nap. “Think you can help me find my way back?” The stag nodded in response to Esper’s request. Pushing herself up from the ground, Esper stood and let out a stretch. She was about to walk out the door, but something tugged at her sleeve. The young woman turned around and saw the stag kneeling before her
