A snowstorm frenzied through the forest of Austertana, Norway. Trees creaked as they bowed in submission to the forceful wind, a few limbs giving way and crashing into the wall of a remote mansion. The towering structure stood in almost complete darkness. A small amount of light was emanating from a single window on the second floor. The window gave view of a child's bedroom decorated in lace, pinks, and teddy bears. In the center stood a small silver-haired child and a tall distorted man.
"Little One, you have to let go now. It's time for me to leave." The dark figure cooed to the small angelic child before him as he gently smoothed her silver hair back.
"But I don't want you to go..." Her words trailed off as tears glistened in the child's blue and red hazel eyes. She would typically fight them back, but the young girl was hoping if she let him see her tears, then the man would not leave.
"Esper, your new friends are arriving. You are going to have so much fun with them that you will forget about me. You don't need me anymore." The young girl looked up at the man with pleading doe eyes, the tears finally giving way. Esper wrapped her tiny arms around him as best she could, not wanting to let go.
"I don't want them! You're the only friend I need, Big Brother." Her small frame shook with emotions she could not understand. Why would her only friend want to leave her? She didn't want new people to take his place.
"Don't worry, Little One. I'll return once you need me again. It will be sooner than you think." The figure bent down and kissed the top of her head before disappearing into a black mist.
Esper gasped as she startled awake. She rubbed her head, trying to shake the strange dream from her mind. It was the same one she had been experiencing the past few weeks. It was a repressed memory her mind was trying to dislodge. The dream was becoming more frequent as the Rites grew nearer. She let out a long sigh and turned her head towards the balcony doors.
"Sunset already, huh?" The young vampire mumbled to herself while stretching. It was as good a time as any to get out of bed. Esper yawned and grumbled as she rolled out of bed. Her suitors were to arrive later this evening, crossing off another day before the Rites start. She sat on the edge of her bed for a while. Her head was filled with nerve-racking thoughts of meeting so many young men.
Esper understood why her father had announced the Rites so soon; she was the first female pureblood vampire in a century, and he wanted his daughter to have the best possible mate. Plus, it was a grand opportunity for a noble family to join the pureblood ranks. The woman shook the thoughts from her head and started her trek towards the kitchen.
Once Esper reached the grand doors of the kitchen, she pushed them open with a huff. She was startled by a yelp followed by a thud. Quickly, Esper poked her head around the corner. She was shocked to see a petite pale female with vibrant auburn curls on the ground.
"Oh my gosh, I am so sorry, Senna," Esper exclaimed as she scrambled to help her friend back up onto her feet.
"Don't worry yourself, Milady. The door just spooked me. I am not injured," Senna said respectfully as she bowed before the silver-haired vampire. Checking her friend over for injuries, Esper smiled. She found no visible bumps or bruises but was surprised to see her friend wearing a maid's uniform.
"Senna, why are you wearing that? You were brought here to be my friend, not to be a member of the staff," she inquired, giving her friend a quizzical look.
"Mother says I should earn my keep after being given a wonderful opportunity to live in such an elegant home," Senna replied, fidgeting with the cuff of one of her sleeves. Fiddling with her hands and sleeves were nervous ticks for the red-headed female.
"Well, you won't be a member of the help while I'm around. Come on, let's go change and then come back for breakfast," Esper stated. She grabbed Senna's hand and began pulling her out of the kitchen, back towards Esper's room. The two girls laughed as they galloped through the second floor. About halfway down the hall to her room, Esper stopped and turned towards Senna.
"Should we wake up, Saffron?" Esper asked, a devious smile creeping across her face. The vampire had a mischievous streak that she let go wild more often than she probably should.
"No, Esper, please no. She hates it when you wake her up early," Senna pleaded. Saffron hated when her beauty rest was interrupted, and she would hold a grudge until the favor was returned tenfold.
"All the more reason to do it," Esper beamed. "Plus, it is our last evening alone together before the houseguests arrive. It's our only chance to prank Saffron one last time."
Senna's face softened. "I forgot about the arrival of your suitors." She looked up at Esper and gave her a big smile. "You're right, let's go wake up Princess Sleepy Head for old time's sake."
Esper returned Senna's smile with a big toothy grin. The prank was going to be epic. The pair quietly made their way to Saffron's room. They crept right up to the door and looked at one another.
"Ready?" Esper whispered.
"Ready." Senna nodded.
The door swung silently open, Esper being the first to enter. She tiptoed over to the stereo and scrolled through the playlists until Esper found Ride of the Valkyrie. Barely containing her excitement, Esper looked back at Senna. She gave her companion a small nod and then hit play. Both girls waited patiently as the music began to build. As the song's powerful crescendo began blasting through the speakers, the vampires rushed to their unsuspecting victim. They landed on the bed, jumping up and down as hard as they could.
Saffron screamed awake, terrified by all the ruckus in her room. She scrambled to grab the remote off her nightstand, struggling to turn off the stereo. Once the music ceased, she flopped back down, her chocolate locks covering her face.
"I really hate you guys." Saffron exhaled, her hair puffing up, only to fall on her face again. "Why can't you ever let me sleep?"
"Please, Saffron. This is the last time it will be just the three of us," Senna pleaded, batting her emerald green eyes at the brunette.
"Plus, I thought you would want to look your best before all the boys arrived," Esper chimed in. She knew Saffron would not be able to resist the bait. Saffron's eyes widened as the realization struck. Clearly, Esper was the only one who remembered the arrival of the guests.
"I forgot that was today." Saffron sighed, sitting up.
"It seems we all did," Senna started.
"We are going to be surrounded by boys," Saffron cried as the excitement set in. She would finally be surrounded by people with civilized standards and not have to endure Esper's pranks. "Beautiful, beautiful boys!"
"See, I told you she would forgive us," Esper whispered, giving Senna a nudge in the ribs with her elbow. "Now, my beautiful ladies, let's go get breakfast."
After breakfast, the girls had returned to Esper's bedroom. In the closet, Senna dug through Esper's clothes with Saffron while Esper sat at her chrome vanity, hyper analyzing her features. She had pale ivory skin and a diamond-shaped face, complimented by high cheekbones, a small refined nose, and plump red lips. Perfectly arched eyebrows framed her exotic blue and red hazel eyes and waist-long silver locks to top it all off.
A knock at the door broke the vampire's concentration. "Come in."
A maid bustled in with a parcel. Esper graciously accepted the package and looked it over. Attached was a note that read:
Esper,
I know you hate dressing up, but please wear this today. If not for the young men, then how about for your dear ole dad?
I love you,
Dad
She let out a small sigh and smiled softly. "Alright, Dad, since you asked."
Esper pulled the garments from the box and inspected them closely. The skirt was a beautiful jet-black color, floor length with a high waist and a slit on one side that ran to about her mid-thigh. The top was a sleeveless and backless turtle neck in a deep shade of teal, her favorite color.
"That is going to look so gorgeous on you," Saffron squealed. "You have to let me do your makeup."
Esper chuckled at Saffron's excitement. "Well, someone is going to have to do it. We all know I am just about helpless when it comes to that sort of stuff."
"You won't regret this!" Saffron exclaimed as she started running back towards her room but paused when she heard Esper call out to her again.
"Yes?"
"Aren't you going to get dressed?" Esper asked.
Saffron arched an eyebrow. "And risk getting makeup on my Erdem original? I think not. Makeup first, then clothes. I suggest you do the same."
As Saffron gathered her supplies, Esper rummaged through her closet, having Senna try on various garments. Esper was considerate of her friend's modest personality when picking out potential dresses. After the third one, Esper picked one that she thought for sure would be a winner.
"That one is perfect for you. It really compliments your figure as well. Take a look in the mirror." Esper looked her friend over, her eyes lighting up at the sight of her Senna. The deep emerald of the dress made Senna's hair glow, almost as if it was a cascade of flames surrounding her bright green eyes.
Senna gasped as she saw her reflection. The dress was gorgeous. The lace trim on the short sleeves, the boat neck cut on the bodice, and the asymmetrical skirt's flow to give her legs the illusion of length. It was the most beautiful she had ever felt. The auburn hair girl wondered how she ever got so lucky to be blessed with such a kind friend.
"Thank you so much, Esper, I promise to return it undamaged."
"Why don't you keep it? That dress screams your name. It was meant for you," Esper gave Senna a big smile, followed by a tight hug.
Saffron trotted back into the room, laying out her supplies and got right to work. After a few hours, the girls were finally ready for the night's events and left Esper's room.
As they strolled down the stairs, Esper picked her pace when she saw a man of tall and broad stature with silver-streaked chocolate brown hair waiting in the foyer. He turned at the footsteps' sound, his stern marble features instantly softening, and his red eyes glimmering at the silver-haired young woman.
"Father," Esper exclaimed as she ran into his arms, giving him a tight hug. It had been a couple of weeks since the young vampire had seen her father, and Esper had missed him dearly. He had been traveling abroad for work and networking with the families participating in the Rites.
"How is my darling girl?" His deep chuckle boomed through the foyer. Esper giggled as he patted her head and released him from her embrace.
"I'm good. We are all excited for tonight," Esper motioned towards her friends.
"You all look stunning, my little heartbreakers. Now come and give me a hug." They all laughed as they embraced in the group hug.
The mansion had sprung to life with the hustle and bustle of the staff. The dining room was set with fine china, the aroma of food being prepared filled the halls, and guest rooms were in the process of being cleaned. The preparations were almost complete. Chimes sounded throughout the mansion, announcing the arrival of the first guests. "Master Wesley," an elderly man dressed in a butler's uniform called out. Esper's father made his way back to the foyer, the girls trailing behind him. As they lined up, Esper tried to hide behind her friends. She was nervous about being in the presence of some of the world's most sought-after bachelors, but Saffron was having none of it. The brunette vampire took hold of her friend's arm and shoved her forward. Letting out a huff, Esper forfeited the battle and resigned to standing at the front with her father.
After dinner, Esper excused herself and made her way outside to a balcony. She stood in the cold and braced her arms on the railing, collecting her thoughts and processing them. There were so many new faces and names, all of which were from the highest of nobility. Taking a deep breath, Esper slouched over the railing and exhaled slowly. "Long night?" A voice sounded from the doorway. She looked back to see the black-haired and red-eyed vampire approaching her. Esper recognized him as the late arrival. "You are Seraph, right?" Esper hoped she had guessed the proper name. He nodded, confirming she was correct. The small victory gave her a brief feeling of relief. "Not so much a long night, just a lot to take in." Esper sighed as she looked up towards the sky. It was so clear up in the lonely mountains. Her father had chosen the perfect location to
Esper let out a long yawn as she stretched, watching the soft pinks and purples dancing across the snow. The view was so enchanting and serene. She just sat there, watching it until her stomach let out a loud grumble. "Ugh, alright, breakfast it is." She got up and walked up to her door. Esper had a shocking surprise when she opened her door. Saffron was standing there, her arms folded across her chest, and her foot jutted out, giving Esper a disapproving look. "What," Esper asked sleepily, trying to rub the sleep from her eyes. "Did you really think I would let you go down to breakfast looking like that?" Saffron, more so stated than asked as she looked her companion over. Esper looked down at her clothes. She was wearing a band tee and sweats. "What's wrong with this?"
Sticking her hands in her pockets, Esper began her trek upstairs to the music room. With the alone time, she wanted to get in some cello practice. When she reached the door, Esper lingered and ran her fingers along the door frame. This was her favorite room in the entire house, a place where nothing mattered except music. Esper glided over to the center of the room where her cello rested in its stand. It looked regal with its shiny black shellac. She sat down, bringing the instrument toward her until it rested between her legs and against her shoulder. The vampire inhaled slowly and let the bow dance across the strings, playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The melody flowed through the hallways, the somber notes filling the houseguests' ears as they finished cleaning up. "What is that," Remy asked, his ears perking up at the sound. &
The mansion was full of life with preparations. The aroma of food filled the air along with the chatter of the staff. Chimes rang over the conversations, announcing the flow of guests arriving. Esper was constantly trotting towards the entry and welcoming guests as they entered. Senna and Saffron would then escort the guests to their room to allow them to get settled before dinner. In between guests, Esper would check in with the staff to see how they were progressing. She never knew how overwhelming being the head of a house could be. It made her wonder how her father managed to run a fine-tuned household and a business empire as well. He never ceased to amaze her. After several long strenuous hours of keeping on top of all the mansion's inner workings, Esper was finally allowed a small break to get ready for dinner. She took a deep breath and readied herself both mental
The ballroom doors were wide open, displaying the flurry of life inside. Esper had never seen the house this alive. There was dancing, chatter, and laughter; everyone seemed happy. The smiling faces gave her the confidence to face the crowd. Lucca gave Esper's hand a small uneasy squeeze as they entered. Feeling the squeeze, Esper returned the squeeze, providing the nervous male with some comfort. Once the two vampires reached the dancefloor's center, Lucca bowed low. "Will you allow me to have your first dance?" "I would love to," Esper replied as she took his hand once more. Lucca pulled Esper close and led her in a slow waltz across the dancefloor. He stepped on her feet a couple times, apologizing profusely with each occurrence, but he eventually found his rhythm. They swayed along with the music, having a g
Wanting to reach the sanctuary of her room before the panic attack hit, Esper raced out of the ballroom. She heard Maxim call out, but she didn't turn back. It was embarrassing for Esper to not make it through one conversation about her mother without crying. She didn't want Maxim to see her fall apart. Once she was in her room's safety, Esper immediately stripped out of her dress and threw it aside. She curled up in her bed as she tried to fight back the tears. All Esper wanted was for the night to end. A gentle knock sounded at the door, but Esper chose to ignore it. She didn't want anyone to see her in this state. The person knocked again; this time, more concerned. "Hun, can I come in," Saffron called out. Esper stayed silent. The brunette vampire sighed and opened the door anyway. "I am not leaving you alone in here to cry through the day."
The sounds of soft cries stirred Esper from her sleep. She groggily opened her eyes and saw little Max standing at the side of the bed, rubbing at his eyes. “Oh, Max.” As Esper sat up, she wrapped the sheet around her torso like a makeshift dress then pulled the boy onto her lap. “How about you tell Mama what’s wrong?” “I had a bad dream.” Maxim hugged onto his mother tight as his small body shook. “I dreamt I was big and hurt you. I don’t want to hurt you, Mama.” “Oh, Sweetie.” Esper caressed Maxim’s raven locks and kissed the top of his head. “I’m sorry you had a bad dream.” Seeing the small boy distressed broke Esper’s heart. She knew the cause of his nightmare. Maxim was suffering from memory echoes, a common a
"You want to what?" Wesley was fuming. He couldn't wrap his head around what could possibly drive his daughter to take care of a person who had caused her so much pain, regardless of if they were a child now or not. "That is not a child. That is a monster who did unspeakable things to you." "Max is not a monster. He needs someone to teach him what real love is." Esper was not backing down. "Yggdrasil was able to see a spark of good in Max and gave him a second chance. Why can't you?" Seraph stood and stifled his laughter as he watched the father and daughter go back and forth. Even Esper wasn't actually his daughter; she still wanted his blessing and approval. Not understanding the heated argument, Maxim ran over to Esper and hugged her leg. He looked up at Wesley and stuck out his lip, making as stern a face as he could. "Don't yell at Mama!" Wesley paused from the toddler's words and looked down at him, then back up at Esper. He could already see the bond between mother and s
A warm breeze stirred up the grass around Seraph and Esper as they sat in the garden of ruins, enjoying the sun. They were propped up against one of the stone columns with Esper between Seraph's legs and her head resting on his chest. "So, you remember everything now?" Seraph laced his fingers with Esper's and brought them up to his mouth to kiss them. "Kind of." Esper shifted a bit to look up at her mate. "The memories are extremely vibrant and can be a little overwhelming when I try to recall too much, but I think it's all there." "Well, don't try too hard." Seraph tilted his head down and kissed the top of Esper's head. "You've been through a lot." "So, have you." Esper reached up with her free hand and ran her fingers through Seraph's black hair. "I can't arg
Lucien’s maniacal laughter echoed throughout the grand chamber of the World Tree cloister. He was standing atop a pile of spriggan corpses, yanking on their limbs and breaking them as if they were twigs. “Are you having fun yet, Yggdrasil?” Lucien hopped off of the pile and walked over to the World Tree. He bent over and knocked on the trunk. “If you don’t send out another one of your little tree witches to entertain my new powers, I’m going to start burning your real body here. I wonder how long it will take the flames to reach your heart?” “Is that how you treat your creator?” The female’s voice set Lucien off. He turned around to see Esper pushing herself up off the ground. How was she still alive and moving? Even with a vampire’s healing abilities, the woman’s broken back would
"SERAPH!" Esper let out a blood-curdling scream as she watched her mate crumple to the ground. Becoming overwhelmed with a blinding rage, Esper pushed herself off the ground. Her breathing was erratic, and her body shook with uncontrollable anger. Lucien had just killed her mate, and she was going to make him pay. In a mad flurry, she charged at Lucien. The white-haired male smirked and back-handed her as if Esper was nothing but a fly, sending her tumbling across the ground. She stood up on shaky legs and let out a frustrated roar before rushing him again. Much to Lucien's amusement, Esper came at him head-on. He was almost within her grasp when Lucien kicked her in the ribs. His leg collided into her side with a tremendous force and sent her flying through the air. Her body crashed into one of the murals, the painted stone crumbling around her. &nbs
"Seraph?" Esper looked at the weeping wound with horror. Without so much as a wince, Seraph reached back and ripped the sword out of his back. A menacing look formed on his face as he turned around slowly and tucked Esper behind him. Standing before Seraph was Maxim's pack of mutant werewolves. "If you are going to stab me, then do yourself a favor and try to kill me." Seraph rolled his healing shoulder and took a few practice swings with the sword before chopping off the assailant's head. He then sneered at the rest of the pack. "Didn't your master teach you that wounded animals are far more dangerous than the hunter?" The remaining beasts snarled furiously at the man and came charging towards him. Taking a protective stance, Seraph guarded Esper against the werewolves. He wasn't going to let anyone take her away ever again—espec
Esper's breath was heavy and panicked as she ran through the dark woods. She paused momentarily to gain her bearings but started running once more when she heard Maxim's laughter echo throughout the forest. Esper needed to get as far away as possible. She would not be caught by him again. The vine-covered hideaway was within her eyesight when Esper felt someone tackle her to the ground. The attacker flipped her around, and she was forced to face Maxim. "I finally found you, Kitten." The crazed glow ran rampant in Maxim's eyes as his gaze bored into Esper. "And now I'm coming for you." Maxim bared his fangs and bit down on to Esper's shoulder. Esper awoke with a scream. She ripped away the bedding and frantically ran down the breezeway towards Seraph's bed chambers. Her cries echoed througho
"Are you sure you are going to be okay while I'm gone?" Ronnie walked out of her closet with an armful of clothes and tossed them on the bed. "Ronnie, for the thousandth time, yes." Esper was sitting on the bed, folding her cousin's clothes and placing them in suitcases. "I don't want you worrying about me while you are on this trip. Just focus on having fun. I am going to be just fine." "I don't like the idea of leaving you here with him alone." Ronnie sat on the bed across from Esper and took up some of the clothes to help fold. "It won't be just Seraph and I. Dad will still be here," Esper offered. "Well, I still don't like it." Ronnie crossed her arms over her chest and stuck her lower lip out as she pouted. Esper couldn't help but laugh at her cousin's display. Ronnie had spen
Esper felt something nudging at her shoulder. Not quite ready to wake, she slapped at the annoyance. Her hand was met by a solid thud and thick fur. She opened her eyes and was met by the crystal blue stare of the stag. The animal was clearly not amused with Esper and huffed in her face. “I’m so sorry, boy. I forgot that I fell asleep out here.” Esper pet the stag’s forehead. She looked up at the sky and saw the moon was still out. Even if it had only been for an hour or two, Esper felt well rested after the nap. “Think you can help me find my way back?” The stag nodded in response to Esper’s request. Pushing herself up from the ground, Esper stood and let out a stretch. She was about to walk out the door, but something tugged at her sleeve. The young woman turned around and saw the stag kneeling before her
