Chapter 20

Author: Lesh61
She forced a smile and nervously asked, “Did you pass the background check?”

I looked into her unfocused, worn-out eyes and casually replied, “I’m not taking the exam anymore. I called the police and had my dad arrested.”

She kept staring at me. Her mouth moved, but no words came out.

The first time I saw Scarlett was almost ten years ago.

She had aged a lot. She was already short, dark, and overweight to begin with. Over time, she was even darker, shorter, and heavier.

She had developed many health problems—a fatty liver, high blood pressure, and arrhythmia. The ironic thing was that my dad was healthy and only got sick once a year.

She worried every day that the debt collectors would come after us while my dad slept peacefully and without care.

I felt like this was so unfair. It really was.

Even when my dad hurt Scarlett so badly, she still would not call the police or press charges. She always tried to make peace.

It was not fair.

So, I took action and sent my dad to priso

  • The Annoying Stepmom   Chapter 1

During the summer of my eighth grade, my dad got me a stepmom. He was 42 years old, and the woman was four years older than him. They did not register their marriage or have a wedding. One day, out of nowhere, that woman suddenly showed up in our house.Just like that, she entered the place I had lived in for all my fourteen years without any warning. When I saw this chubby, dark-skinned woman, I felt nothing but disgust and dislike. My dad, however, was beaming. He pulled me over, ignored my confusion and reluctance, and said excitedly, “She’s Scarlett. You’ve met her before at dinner. She’s going to be your mom now.”She wore a loose cardigan that hung over her large frame. After hearing my dad’s words, she gave me a fake smile. “Pearl, do you remember me? We had dinner together once with your dad and your godfather.”I did remember. Her name was Scarlett Campbell.I also remembered that before my godfather died, she was his mistress. My godfather already had a wife and kid

Scarlett’s lips curled slightly, and it made her bright red lipstick look even more noticeable. And just like that, she moved into our house without any fuss.A new towel appeared on the bathroom rack, and a new cup with her toothbrush showed up on the sink. But she did not just want to add her things to the house. She wanted to erase everything that reminded us of my mom and replace it with her own stuff. She made huge changes. She replaced the couch, threw out the cabinets, and even removed the kitchen hood. The house looked completely different. She even wanted to take down my mom’s wedding photo that hung in my room. When my mom left, she took everything she could. The heavy wedding photo no longer held much meaning for her, so she left it behind. In the end, it became the only thing I had to remember her by.Sometimes, when I looked at the photo, at my mom’s face that felt both familiar and distant, it almost felt like she was looking back at me.Today, my dad was at wo

My dad had broken the lock on my door long ago. All that was left was a hole where it used to be.The thin door was covered with small cracks and stains that could not be cleaned. Each one was a sign of the violence he had caused. He kicked the door open easily.Without saying a word, he grabbed my arm, yanked me out of bed, and dragged me to the floor in one motion.I was not prepared and felt dizzy from being pulled so suddenly. My arm was twisted painfully, like it was about to pop out of its socket, and I could not stop myself from wincing. Before I could even think, he slapped me hard across the face.He was so much stronger than me that I could not fight back even if I wanted to.I did not even have the chance to think about resisting before that thought was completely crushed. He had a cigarette in his mouth, and smoke swirled around him. The glowing tip flickered, and he angrily shouted, “Just a few days without a beating, and you’re already acting out! Your stepmom bo

At first, the thought was just a faint idea, but with each slap, it became stronger and clearer.I blamed everything on Scarlett.I blamed her, even though she screamed and tried to stop my dad when he burst into my room, dragged me out of bed, and threw me on the floor. In a panic, she grabbed his arm and tried to stop him. She even stepped in front of me a few times, only for him to shove her aside. Her white nightgown smelled nice, and it made her face look even paler. She shook as she raised her arm to stop my dad and repeatedly tried to defend me and plead for me. She was so nervous that she almost bit her tongue.“No, no… don’t hit her, maybe I made a mistake…”She tried to say nice things about me, even though we had barely spent any time together.“Pearl is a good girl. She’s very polite. She even helped me with the dishes. She’s been doing her homework. She probably just wanted a break. Maybe she wasn’t playing on her phone.”I watched her, and her fake concern made m

I never hid my dislike for this awful woman.I often thought that she was the one who caused my godfather’s death. There was no real reason for thinking that. Malicious thoughts did not need a reason. After my godfather died, she immediately turned to my dad.I knew she wanted to kill him this time.A week passed since she complained to my dad about me, and my cheek was still swollen. The bruise on my forehead from when my dad hit me with the dictionary had not healed, and my hatred had not faded either. My dad was unusually busy that week. He was working hard to make money to keep her happy.Sometimes, he even stayed out all night. After that day, she was more careful toward me, even when asking me to eat. If she heard even the smallest sound, like a pen dropping in my room, she would ask if everything was okay. While my dad was trying to please her, she was trying to win me over. She asked my dad about what I liked and bought a lot of small cakes. She would quietly brin

Scarlett tried to explain to him, but he still would not listen.I could faintly hear Scarlett crying and saying, “Stop, Warren. Please stop. I beg you. Even if you kill me later, it doesn’t matter. This is Pearl’s future. You can’t ruin it…”I walked the supervisors out, and they did not look happy.I watched them leave without saying anything to explain myself. Scarlett’s last words kept playing in my head. After so many years, I realized I should hate my dad.But how could I hate him?I could barely remember my mom’s face anymore, no matter how hard I tried. She had already given up on me. The only person in the world who was still close to me by blood was my dad.I walked upstairs and passed by my dad’s friends as they hurriedly left.Seeing their panicked faces, I suddenly had a bad feeling. My heart started beating faster, like it knew something was coming.I quickly took the stairs and grabbed the railing as I rushed up.The door was slightly open. I pushed it, and it

The department I applied to was far and not well-known, but there were still a lot of people trying to get in.Before the results of the final background check were even out, Scarlett was already celebrating. She kept telling the neighbors that I had passed the civil service exam and got a stable government job. She was so proud and said I had become successful. She would say how the little girl everyone doubted had become the most successful one.She was praising me so much that the neighbors got jealous. But neither of us expected that the department I applied to would come to our house for an interview.I had researched and told Scarlett that usually, they just visited people in their hometown communities or schools. A home visit was usually just a formality. But every department did things differently, and each supervisor had their own way of handling things.Still, Scarlett was really scared. She kept thinking of all the things that might happen. She was afraid that even t

She had a blank look on her face. On the New Year's Day, she gave me 500 dollars as usual and proudly asked me to say something nice to make her happy.I did not know when it happened, but my dad’s debts kept getting bigger. They got so big that he did not even spare the 50 dollars my grandma needed to buy meat. He shamelessly took the money from her.The bank kept calling me and asking if I knew someone named Warren Zimmerman.Scarlett had already paid off over 300,000 dollars of his debts. She even thought about selling the old house she bought when she got married back then. But my dad was beyond help. He kept gambling, and sometimes, he even had people come over to gamble at home. The house was a mess with empty bottles everywhere. In the thick smoke, my dad would not stop gambling.Scarlett could not stop him anymore. Before, when she was around, he would drink less, but she could no longer control him.I tried a few times to tell her to leave my dad, but I was afraid she

At first, she just wanted to live a quiet life with my godfather, but he died unexpectedly. Just ten minutes before he passed, he was still eating and drinking with her.On May 13th, she went to a church to light a candle and say a prayer. She hoped that my dad would stay safe and that I would do well on my college exams. The church was crowded, and she believed that if she prayed with sincerity, her prayers would be answered.I did not know why she told me all of this, but suddenly, I felt like it might be a good thing for her to stay by my dad’s side. She seemed like a kind person.During my four years of college, I barely went home.I did not want to go back. I did not want to disturb her and my dad’s life together. My grandfather left me 20,000 dollars for college, but my dad did not give it to me. He lied that he used it to buy a gift for Scarlett.I knew he used the money to pay off debts.Even so, Scarlett took the blame. She paid my tuition in my dad’s name and sent me

Even though my physics grades improved a lot, it did not help with my biology and chemistry.Based on the year’s ranking for arts classes, I barely made it to the advanced class.Scarlett was even happier than my dad. She insisted on treating me to a nice dinner as a reward. She remembered all my favorites: mashed potatoes, steak, grilled vegetables, and a Caesar salad. While my dad went to the restroom, she tried to hide her excitement and teased me, “You did so well and got into the advanced class. You just want me to spend money, huh? So, what do you want as a gift?”I wanted a phone, a tablet, some nice clothes, or maybe just cash to spend on whatever I wanted. But looking at the spark in her eyes, my mouth ran ahead of my thoughts, and I said, “Cheapskate, you could sign me up for more tutoring classes.”She smiled even brighter but pretended to act casual. “Oh, so you want to study more. Let’s see what you can actually do.”I did not end up achieving much. For the whole
