**Jade POV**
Snow. It just keeps falling, making all of my surroundings hazy. The cold is cutting and my whole body feels numb. Without warning, a blow to my head knocks me over. My ears are ringing but I can feel hot breath on my face. I open my eyes to the frothing mouth of a jet-black wolf. I try to scream but nothing comes out.
“TAKE HER!!! GET HER OUT OF HERE NOW!!”
Beep! Beep! Beep!
I groaned and smacked the snooze button on my alarm clock. 4:15 am. I had 15 minutes to be totally dressed and downstairs in the kitchen preparing breakfast. I sighed and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. That dream AGAIN. Just when I got a few nights without it, it comes back to confuse and terrify me again. It always felt so real and every time I thought I’d figure out what happened, but I just never seemed to be able to stay asleep long enough. I snorted to myself. You would probably have to get more than 4 hours of sleep every night to be able to do that.
One more deep breath before I throw myself into this crappy day, which is just like the crappy day before that and the one before that and…. Well, you get it.
I’ve been an omega slave at River Bed pack since before I can remember. Literally. I don’t even know how I got here or what my life was like before this. I know I had parents at one point, but I don’t remember much about them, besides my dad’s brown eyes with flecks of green in them, just like mine and my mom’s flowery scent. I wish I knew more about them, but all the older omegas said I was just dumped here one night when I was about 5. Alpha Victor says my parents were most likely rogues who were killed during the uprising 12 years ago.
I throw my long, curly auburn hair into a bun and throw on one of the few tshirts and tattered pairs of leggings I own. Omegas are not paid for their work here, so we usually have to find clothes the other pack members throw away and try to mend them enough for every day wear. Some nicer pack members take pity on us and donate some of their outdated clothes. That’s how I got my only jacket and well loved pair of oversized sneakers.
Most pack members see omegas as servants who were created for the sole purpose of tending to their every need. From what I can tell, the ranked members are no bigger than the omegas when they shift. I watch the warriors change shifts all the time, and when they need extra bodies, some of the omega men volunteer so they can get a full serving of the next meal they eat. From what I can tell, the omegas are no slower or weaker either, just not as well trained for combat. And that’s purposefully done to keep us as powerless as possible. The disciplinary system for omegas is mostly pretty physical, and alpha Victor has mentioned on several occasions that he’s not willing to deal with omega strikes or even unionizing, so he refuses to allow us to train to even defend ourselves against the few rogues that sometimes turn up on the property. All in all, that’s not even the worst part of having zero fighting know-how. The worst part is when you’ve done something wrong or displeased the alpha in any way, and you’re dragged out back to be put in your place by the warriors.
It’s just awful. I myself have only been taken out 10-15 times since i’ve been here, but I’ll never forget the sounds of the screams during the beatings. I can hear them all the way upstairs when I’m cleaning the alpha floors. If you’ve really stepped in it, they’ll even chain you outside for the night. I’ve only had to endure that once, but it was the worst experience of my life. The chains are made of silver, and the burns left on my skin were horrendous. They hurt for at least a week after, and I was expected to return right to my normal every day responsibilities the moment I was released. No hospital wing for me.
I have just enough time for a quick glance in the mirror. Sigh. I hate how curvy I am. You’d think that wouldn’t be a problem with how small the omega portions are at meal time but here I am with my wide hips and what the particularly disgusting members of the pack refer to as my “bubble but”. Don’t even get me started on my boobs. I have to grab shirts out of the trash that are roughly 3 sizes too big just to hide these crazy things. My body gets me in trouble all the time. I’m constantly accused of sneaking second helpings of food or hiding from work, but it’s just how I’m built I guess. It doesn’t help that most of the higher up females are naturally stick thin and expect everyone else to look that way.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
4:25 am. I always set that alarm so I know exactly when I should be walking out of the shed so I can get to the kitchen with plenty of time to have breakfast prepared. I shudder as I remember the time that I had slept 15 minutes too long and Andrew, the alpha’s son, had to wait an extra 5 minutes for breakfast before he left for training. He’d busted my lip and choked me until I saw stars and I vowed to never put myself through that again if I could help it. I do my best to be absolutely invisible but somehow almost every day I get myself into some level of trouble, usually just a back hand or someone tripping me but sometimes I do get treated a bit more harshly. The extra harsh treatment is almost always courtesy of the alpha’s treat of a daughter, Amelia. I scoffed to myself as I made my way across the back yard of the pack house thinking about the time Amelia punched me as hard as she could in the stomach and then kneed me directly in the nose because one of the warriors she was regularly hooking up with was looking at me for longer than she would’ve liked.
I opened the back door as quietly as I can so as not to wake anyone and crept into the kitchen.
“Good morning,” I whispered to my friend Emma and she handed me a cup of coffee. “Thank you, you’re a life saver!”
Emma smirked at me and blew a chocolate brown hair out of her face “can you believe I lost my last hair tie? Who knows when someone will throw one out again. I’ll never hear the end of it if one of these uptight pricks gets one of my hairs in their food.” She rolled her dark gray eyes at me and I can’t help but giggle. Emma’s eyes were a beautiful hazel color that always seemed to change color based on the mood she was in. If they were bright green, she was happy. If they were gray, she was pissed about something. And I’d only seen blue a few times when she told me about her parents. Blue meant she was deeply upset.
“I’ll make sure I look for some in everyone’s trash when I’m cleaning later. What do you want me to start on for breakfast?”
“Oh that’d be great!” Emma beamed at me. “Prince not so charming wants those breakfast croissants you made a few days ago with the sausage, egg and cheese baked into them. Do you mind starting on those and I’ll start cutting the fruit and putting out the cereal and milk for everyone who doesn’t want the hot breakfast.”
“You got it!” I told her and started gathering supplies. It could be pretty miserable here sometimes but at least I had Emma. Her story is even worse than mine, so we kind of bonded over mutual orphanhood. I really see her as my sister at this point. She makes the every day shit we have to do bearable, even if her mouth got us both thrown out of the pack house and into that little shed out back. We fixed it up with old junk people threw out and it’s basically like our own little tiny apartment now.
About an hour later, I had the first batch of croissants ready to go for all the warriors and patrolmen who would be coming through any moment. I started putting them all on a serving tray to set in the dining room when I caught a familiar— and not in a good way— scent just behind me. Before I could even try to make myself scarce I felt a hand grazing my ass that told me it was too late.
“Mmmm my favorite,” Andrew’s sleazy voice was annoyingly close. I felt his lips touching my ear and fought the urge to vomit. “Looks almost as delicious as you today.”
“Thank you, I’ll have it in the dining room soon if you want to sit and wait in there?” I offered trying to feign innocence to what he was really seeking. It was no secret that Andrew was always looking for both willing and less than willing conquests to entertain himself and I was absolutely not interested.
“I think I’d rather enjoy your company while I wait,” Andrew said, his arms slithering around me and pulling me into him. I couldn’t help but jump as I felt his erection rubbing up against the back of my leg. I felt his hands wandering upward and I immediately tried to wiggle free, accidentally elbowing him in the face.
“YOU LITTLE BITCH LOOK WHAT YOU DID” Andrew shouted and to my horror, I saw a drop of blood running down his nose. I was so dead. Here lies Jade, an idiot omega who accidentally beat up her boss’s son.
Before I could even truly process what just happened, I felt a blow to the side of my face and realized that Andrew punched me. I fell to the ground and was quickly picked up by my throat. “How dare you hit me? I’m your future alpha and you’re just the pathetic scum who makes my food and cleans my bathroom! You would be lucky to hook up with me you stupid omega bitch!!” He spat at me. I could feel myself growing weaker and I started seeing black spots in my vision. As I began to realize just how dire the situation was, I could feel Andrew’s grip only getting tighter.
“Come come, Andrew. I have meetings all morning and I won’t be able to get through them without my breakfast. Put the omega down for now.” I heard Alpha Victor’s commanding yet apathetic voice from somewhere around me and before I could even try to escape on my own, I felt myself being flung into the wall. I hit my head on the hard plaster behind me and I just knew that I was severely hurt. I heard the kitchen door swing shut just before the tears inevitably came.
I heard frantic footsteps getting closer and I knew Emma saw everything and had to watch helplessly or earn us both a beating later for insubordination. “Oh, you poor thing! I’m so sorry, Jade. Go to the bathroom and get yourself together and I’ll bring the croissants into the dining room, okay?”
I couldn’t do anything but nod and struggle to get myself back to a standing position. Everything hurt. It would take at least few days for my body to heal itself from an attack like that for a girl with no wolf yet, and I could only hope I didn’t attract more negative attention throughout the rest of the day.
**Victor POV**If my son weren’t such a hot head, I’d almost be proud of the way he dominated that omega in the kitchen. Being an alpha is all about displays of your authority to keep from your inferiors challenging it. I imagine that once Andrew learns to harness that power into a more calculated, calm exterior he’ll be an unstoppable alpha. Just like me and my father before me. “Son, you know chasing omega skirts is a favorite pastime of mine, but it’s time we get you focused on your future. So far your alpha training is going quite well. I could see you being ready to take over the pack by the time you’re 20 or 21.”“But everyone else takes over their pack at 18. Why are you holding me back?” I could see my son’s impatient, angry blue eyes attempting to pierce into me, but he just barely missed the mark of intimidation. I stifled a laugh at the pathetic attempt and he began to look puzzled. My facial expression must’ve given away my amusement.“You aren’t everyone else and you’ve
“Are you my wolf?” I asked in surprise. If this was my wolf, she was a day early. That is assuming the birthday I thought was mine was accurate.“Yes, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Jade. My name is Astrid.” The velvety voice replied.“How were you able to come forward a day before my birthday?” I was hoping that after everything I’d lost in my short life, the day I’d always been told was my birthday wasn’t one of them. I couldn’t lose the one day I counted on to feel the most connected with who I was.“I needed to come to you early. I had to tell you a few things. The first is that we are not like other wolves and we are most certainly not an omega.” The way she said it somehow told me she wasn’t looking down on omegas, but she for some reason wanted me to know that I was set apart from them. “If we’re not an omega, then what are we? Are we a born rogue?” “No, dear. We’re not a rogue as you were led to think. In fact, we are of alpha blood.” I couldn’t believe this. There was no way
**Jade POV**The conversation I had been hoping to have with Emma after we’d finished everything was still not to be had. After making and cleaning up dinner, Luna Krista had made her way down to the kitchen, making sure to look at all of us as if we were the dirt beneath her high priced shoes, and told us we hadn’t “earned” sleep because we’d clearly “half assed” our way through our responsibilities, and she demanded we clean the entire pack house all over again. That took several hours, and since then we’d been hard at work in the kitchen to make the perfect scones for breakfast, the perfect 5 tier cake for the party, to fold the napkins perfectly into swans, to polish the silverware perfectly, and above all to make our pack house appear grander than it really was. It was just past lunch time and quite honestly I wasn’t sure how we were going to get through the next several hours. We were all running on crappy coffee and adrenaline from Luna Krista periodically bursting in to scream
**Elliott POV**“Last chance to change our minds and just skip this thing all together,” I half joked as we took the exit to River bed pack. God, I hated these parties— almost as much as I disliked visiting this pack. Alpha Victor was a flashy, ridiculous man who was pretty clearly compensating for something in my opinion and his children were even worse. “Don’t be like that, you know we have that treaty meeting and we can’t miss it,” My beta, Jasper chastised. I saw his blue-green eyes glaring at me in the rear view mirror as if he was assessing whether I’d leap from the car to escape or not. “It was just a joke, ‘dad’.” I teased, putting air quotes around “dad” just to mess with him further. My beta was great at his job and a fantastic friend—brother, even— but good goddess did the guy need to loosen up a bit. “Haha! ‘Dad’! Hey ‘dad’ can we stop at a gas station and get some snacks?” Cameron, my gamma, snickered. His brown eyes widened and he blew his long blonde hair out of his
**Jade POV**I woke up to a searing pain on my neck and wrists. Silver. I knew instantly that Victor had chained me to the post out back to most likely finish me off later. Wow, I’d really made a mess of things. I knew I needed to escape soon or die and that I’d just brought my own demise—the one that Astrid specifically warned me about— closer with my big mouth. And to make matters worse I’d done nothing to help the other omegas. I wanted to cry but I just couldn’t find the energy.I felt the cold concrete underneath me, wishing with all I had that I’d at least been given a blanket. I tried to move but as soon as I tried to sit up, I shrieked in pain. I’d almost forgotten about the extent of my beating. I could feel my lip swelling and I knew there had to be extensive bruising and blood all over my face. I managed to scoot myself closer to the post and leaned against it. It was cold and uncomfortable, but at least I wasn’t laying on the ground like a dead animal.I heard music not to
**Jade POV**I woke up to this irritating beeping sound but I was very aware that I was more comfortable than I’d ever been in my life. That is, until I tried to sit up and then I was suddenly acutely aware of all I’d been through in the last— wait how long have I been unconscious? Or did they kill me already? That didn’t make sense, I wouldn’t be feeling pain if I were dead. What was happening?I hesitantly opened my eyes to see a bunch of machines all around me. What in the world was this? Is this where they were going to kill me? Would they be torturing me before they took me out? Tears started to run down my face as I realized I wasn’t strong enough to escape even though I was somehow unchained. Maybe they counted on that, maybe they knew there was no way I could defend myself and that’s why they didn’t bother to restrain me. But why put me in this comfortable bed if the plan was just to kill me after?Suddenly, I felt the sensation of someone touching me but it wasn’t like a pers
**Jade POV**Within about 5 minutes, the blonde man and another huge and intimidating man with short, dark hair came into the room. I knew they were probably Elliott’s beta and gamma, but the dark haired man seemed almost higher rank than that. He both terrified and mesmerized me with his stature alone. This man had to be at least 7 feet tall. “We’ve been given an hour to get off the property. Are our bags packed?” Elliott asked them.“Yes, alpha. I have the car all loaded up and I’ve already asked the doctor if he’d like to bring his family to join our pack. They’re almost finished packing their car as well.” The dark haired man answered.“Perfect. Jade, do you have any belongings you would like to take with you?” Elliott turned his beautiful gaze to me and I was suddenly filled with nervous energy. Would I really be escaping to what would hopefully be a hopefully better life with this man?“No, I don’t really have anything besides a few clothing items,” I started before realizatio
**Jade POV**I opened my eyes to see Emma and Elliott standing over me and I was excited to find that it wasn’t a dream, this was all really happening. Elliott’s dark eyes seemed to twinkle as he looked into mine. I couldn’t help but smile shyly at him. “Sorry to wake you, love, but we’ve been on the road a little over an hour and a half and we figured now would be a good time to stop for lunch since you haven’t eaten and poor Emma missed breakfast because of us.” Emma smiled hearing her name acknowledged and I realized that by falling asleep I’d left her alone with a car full of strangers. I hoped she wasn’t too upset with me. “Elliott thought you might want to change before we go in,” Emma said cheerfully and held up clothes for me. “I’ll hold up this blanket so no one can see you guys.” Elliott said, turning around behind Emma and spreading a large fluffy blanket as far as his arms could stretch, forming a semi circle of coverage for us, the open door to the car covering us on t
“I’m sorry, I lost my train of thought. I should probably start from the beginning of what I know, that’s why I’m here.” He smiled sheepishly at me, almost as if he were trying to read my face to see if I’d lumped him in with his father or if there was any level of trust. I decided to be open-minded and give him a chance to explain himself.Elliott gestured for Logan to come and sit in the sitting area Emma and I had just been in the day before talking about her strange dream. I wondered why he wouldn’t want this meeting to be more formal and at his desk, but I didn’t question him. Jasper pushed one of the larger chairs in front of the desk over to the area, and Logan gratefully took it. As he plopped into the chair, he closed his eyes almost as if he hadn’t sat anywhere remotely as comfortable in a long time. I began to look him over. The scars on his face were nothing compared to the rest of his body. Though he did appear to be wearing Elliott’s clothes as they were a bit too large,
**Elliott POV**So strange. One moment, Jade was reaching out for a handshake and then next, she was gasping, and her eyes clouded over as if in a private link. When they came back into focus, she looked blankly and wordlessly at our guest for at least 15 seconds.“You’re Logan.” She almost whispered. How could she know that? He’d only just told me his first name on our way up to my office so I would know how to introduce him.“Do you trust me?” He asked my mate, looking almost as if he could see into her very core.I saw Jade nod stoically in response. “But I don’t know why.” She admitted in a whisper.I saw him reach out as if to hug MY mate, and I couldn’t stop Aries from interfering. I liked to think of myself as more evolved than my wolf, but he had a point. Why was this stranger touching our mate knowing she bore our mark?A growl came from deep inside me, a carnal and possessive one. I could see the fear on Logan’s face, and I didn’t care. It wasn’t until I looked at Jade and s
Before I could spin out too much, the door swung open. My breath hitched and I sprinted toward my mate, jumping into his arms, and inhaling deeply into his hair. “Are you okay?!” I realized I was crying.“Yes, love. I’m just fine, and I think we may have made a major breakthrough about your old pack. Mystic Moon, I mean.” Elliott’s voice was the greatest sound I’d ever heard. I was barely processing what he was saying and just wept into his shoulder. I knew he was fine now, but I realized the thought that he’d been hurt—or maybe even worse—had frightened me more than anything ever had in my life.I finally realized what Elliott had just said to me when I heard someone clearing their throat. The sound was coming from behind Elliott, so this must’ve been the ‘them’ they were talking about.I slid slowly down from my mate’s grasp before looking behind him. There stood a man with dirty blonde hair falling in messy-looking curls down past his shoulders. His hair was even longer than Elliot
**Jade POV**Cleo pulled away suddenly and I could see a very confused and slightly alarmed look on her face. “That was Cameron. Evidently there’s some sort of emergency and we all need to go into Elliott’s office and wait for them.”“Is Elliott okay?!” I asked, wondering why he didn’t link me himself.“I’m not sure.” Cleo bit her lip. Her eyes clouded over, and I wondered if she was mindlinking back to ask.“I just linked Jasper. He said Cam asked him to come too, but if Elliott were hurt Jasper would be one of the first people to be linked,” she seemed to be trying to calm me, but my eyes got a bit wider wondering why the beta would be told before Elliott’s mate. Why was Jasper more important? And why was I so upset about it? “You’ll be the first to know as soon as you’re able to be linked!” Cleo patted my arm, trying to explain it to me and I felt a bit of relief. We made our way into the hallway, and I saw Cameron and Sebastian naked and rushing toward us. Being wolves, nudity was
**Cleo POV**We’d had an eventful few hours. Vera had thrown a few scenarios at the girls, who had taken it all in stride. Jade seemed to have a natural hosting ability just like rumor has it her own mother did, but it was beginning to seem kind of obvious to me that Emma was of some sort of high-ranking descent. Maybe not an alpha, but she could easily be a gamma or maybe even a beta. She seemed to not only catch on to the more tedious aspects of her role quickly, but she also seemed to enjoy learning what was expected of her. Both girls were taking notes so quickly and diligently that I could swear I could almost see steam coming from their pens, Jade writing little notes next to her notes on occasion and Emma looking like she wished she had some sort of recording device. I made a mental note to ask Vera if we should record lessons or even make flashcards to quiz them later on.I knew the expectations of a ranked female could be daunting. When I’d realized that becoming Jasper’s mat
**Logan POV**8:45 am. Like clockwork. I heard the howl emanating from my father before listening to his retreating footsteps as he ran toward his love. In about 15 minutes, breakfast would be all but thrown at me by one of his more sadistic warriors (he always chose the meaner ones to look after me when he was gone, his way of trying to discourage any “funny business” on my part), and after that, the coast would be clear to begin my exit.I stuffed my face with the near-inedible breakfast food I was given. My father was hesitant to give me anything of more than mediocre nutritious value. He wasn’t as oblivious as I gave him credit for, he knew our bloodline, and he knew I wasn’t the type to just submit without some serious beating down. Combine that with the fact he already knew I was a better fighter than I let on and the only conclusion he could draw was that any hope he had in keeping me prisoner for long enough to execute his plan was to keep me hungry and thus in a slightly weak
**Jade POV**I finished my shower in record time before quickly raking all the products I’d been given through my hair and giving it a quick blowdry before throwing it up in a bun still slightly damp. I remembered how my hair kept getting in the way while I was trying to take notes yesterday and I wasn’t willing to deal with it again. I wanted it out of my face so I could focus on the tasks at hand. I flitted into the closet and selected a pair of navy blue slacks with small white checkers and a thick, white sweater. It was soft and cozy, yet still fashionable enough to show Vera I could dress the part of a luna. I grabbed a pair of flat dark brown loafers and threw them on before heading toward the door. Elliott was already gone, probably to check on warrior training or spend some time with his brother.Just before opening the door, I saw a small note on top of a beautiful black leather bound journal. “This is for you, princess. Take awesome notes and enjoy yourself! I’ll see you for
**Elliott POV**The light was barely filtering in through the windows of my room when I heard a firm rapping on the door. I reluctantly got up, covering my naked mate with the heavy comforter so as not to accidentally let someone else see her glorious form and shrugged on my pants from the night before that lay discarded on the floor next to the bed. I heard Jade pout in her sleep once the warmth of my body was gone, but she didn’t wake up.When I opened the door, I saw before me a very unenthused looking Emma. “Cleo banged on my door about 5 minutes ago. She said Jade and I have a half an hour to be dressed and in her office for our next lesson, and she asked me to make sure Jade got up and at em while she works on breakfast and coffee for us.” She was rubbing her eyes and yawned twice while she was attempting to get the sentence out, but I nodded and stifled a chuckle at her disheveled appearance. Someone had definitely chosen the wrong night to have so many drinks. I wondered to my
**Jade POV**I’d woken up to Elliott gently shaking me awake from my dream. Or was it a memory? I could feel cold beads of sweat forming all up and down my body, I felt chilled as if I really had been trudging through snow for hours. There was something about the dream that resonated with me, that told me it was real. “It feels real to me too,” Astrid said almost as a question in my head.None of this made any sense. Vera and William would’ve told me if I’d had any siblings. I’d asked Elliott point blank, and he’d told me he didn’t remember me having any siblings. I’d begun to wonder if there was a possibility that Emma and I had known each other at Mystic Moon once Sebastian suggested it, but I’d fallen asleep before I could really think through it. The thought of knowing Emma before going to River Bed was odd and difficult enough to work through. Now I somehow knew my mate’s best friend? And not just knew him, I was to believe I was related to Jasper? And if my dream was real on any
