CHAPTER 9

The next morning came faster than I wanted it to. There was a loud clang from outside. Probably in the hallway but it sounded like it was next to my ear. The other girls hurried out to take their baths. I followed them and when I returned, I saw a dress on my bed. I quickly put it on and followed the girls out of the downstairs quarters.

The kitchen was already bustling even though there was no sign of light outside.

"Where's the new girl?" I heard Agnia's voice even before I saw her. She was dressed in a long blue shirt with leather pants and her hair was packed in a tight neat bun.

I looked around and noticed it was the same as the other girls. She eyed me with disapproval.

"Come with me" she instructed and I followed after that.

We entered a small room with two chairs and a mirror on the wall.

"This is your first day so you'll be excused. From tomorrow, you must come in here like other girls and do your hair properly before dawn" she commanded and packed my hair tightly.
