My thought didn't go still even after Xander was gone. How could it? Those sparks were the best thing I've felt since the beginning of my existence. I just couldn't stop thinking about it for a second. The main door of the dungeon opened and I heard footsteps,a single pair this time. It was the other guard who was with the alpha earlier. His eyes were full of hate as he opened my cell. I moved in fear. Why was he here? It was obvious he hated me. Did they send him to kill me? He yanked me roughly from my position on the floor and pushed me outside. I caught myself before I could fall face-first on the ground. "Where are we going?" I asked in fear. He didn't respond to my question and only pushed me harder. My hip slammed into another cello bar and I groaned in pain. He didn't even acknowledge that or pause in his inhumane treatment. If anything, it gave him joy that I got hurt. He kept pushing me until we were outside the dungeon. There was no one in the hallway that I could ask fo
The next morning came faster than I wanted it to. There was a loud clang from outside. Probably in the hallway but it sounded like it was next to my ear. The other girls hurried out to take their baths. I followed them and when I returned, I saw a dress on my bed. I quickly put it on and followed the girls out of the downstairs quarters. The kitchen was already bustling even though there was no sign of light outside. "Where's the new girl?" I heard Agnia's voice even before I saw her. She was dressed in a long blue shirt with leather pants and her hair was packed in a tight neat bun. I looked around and noticed it was the same as the other girls. She eyed me with disapproval. "Come with me" she instructed and I followed after that. We entered a small room with two chairs and a mirror on the wall. "This is your first day so you'll be excused. From tomorrow, you must come in here like other girls and do your hair properly before dawn" she commanded and packed my hair tightly. I wi
I took Lucia’s advice and life became a whole lot better for me. A month passed quickly and I was still stuck with the same list Agnia had given me when I first started. The east wing, I dreaded going there every day but I had no choice. Turns out there were a lot of rooms that had been uncleaned for years and somehow, it was expected of me to clean them. In the last four weeks, Lucia had been changed twice. We didn’t talk much. Just a few words between us whenever we crossed paths. “Fuck” I groaned as my toe hit the edge of the bed. I cursed under my breath. I didn’t deserve this suffering at all. I dragged the bag of laundry out into the hallway and took the clean sheets inside to change the bedding and curtains. It was the last thing I had to do for the day and I could go for lunch and finally have some rest. I saw Lucia pack up and leave just as I heard voices. It was common for me to hear people talking here while I worked but it was very unusual for them to come to the rooms.
A new week has just begun and I was awaiting a new list. Hopefully, I won't be sent back to the east wing. The other girls lounged in the room as only a few had gone out for the day's work. After sitting for a long while, just waiting around, I got dressed and exited the room. The kitchen was not as busy as it usually was. I scanned the area for Agnia but I couldn't spot her. “Hello, have you seen Agnia?” I tapped a girl and asked. “Lady Agnia?” “Right, lady Agnia” “Down the hall, she's giving out the lists for duties” “Thank you” she didn't respond and went back to her duties. I went down the hall and I saw Agnia with a group of girls surrounding her. I got in line as she handed out the list until it got to my turn. “I don't remember summoning you for duties today” “You've never summoned me, I always show up on Mondays to get my list in the kitchen” “Didn’t you wonder why there are only a few people doing duties today? I'm sure you saw other girls relaxing” “Yes but…” “But
A smile broke out on my face when the cave came into sight. I climbed the steps, walked through the cave, and I spotted a familiar figure standing in the water. “Xerxes” I shouted. He turned and walked towards me. “I didn’t think you’ll come after yesterday” “I wasn’t going to but I needed some air before my night duties” Night duties?” His smile changed to a frown “Yeah. I serve at the table” His face didn’t relax a bit. “You‘ll be exposed to higher-ups. They can be very nasty” “So far. I haven’t gotten into any trouble” And I didn’t plan to. I would simply just do my duties and stay in the shadows. “I can speak to Agnia. Your duties can be adjusted” “No,” I said immediately. “No? Do you like serving meals? Even when you know it puts you at risk?” “If I do what they say I’ll be fine. Besides, I don’t want the other girls to think I’m getting special treatment” He scoffed. “Nobody would think anything of it. Besides its normal to suddenly swap duties” “No. I’ll be fine”
ALPHA ROME’S POV My wolf was restless. I could continue to act like I didn't know what was happening and keep restraining him but it was messing with my duties and daily activities. He kept clawing at me to get out and claim her. Claim our mate. No. She wasn't our mate. It was a sick joke from the moon goddess. Our mate was dead. The moon goddess let them take her away from me, and now a girl shows up as my mate. I couldn't believe it. I would never believe it. She wasn't mine. The sparks meant nothing. But she was an inconvenience and I had to deal with her. I already had a witch checking out the situation for me. I could have easily contacted her old pack but I stopped myself from doing that. What if she was in danger and that's why she ran away in the first place? What if they hurt her? My fist clenched tightly at the thought of it. I reigned in my anger. I closed my room door and headed out to my office. "Morning Alpha" Xander was just opening the door. I grunted a response an
The scene from the dinner didn’t leave my head. I kept thinking about it for some weird reason. Why did he help me and why was Athena glaring at me with so much hatred? It was difficult to understand and I made a promise to myself not to worry too much. Breakfast was eventful. The wolves went about their normal daily activities and there was nothing left for us to do in the meantime. I made sure my duties were done before I decided to go to the cave hoping I would not run into Xerxes. Xander’s warning from yesterday kept ringing in my head. It was for our safety. I was heading out when I heard my name. Sydney was waving from inside the building. I paused and she ran after me, holding her bag tightly. “Where are you going?” “For a walk” “That sounds boring. Why don’t you follow me into town” she asked with an excited smile. “Why?” “Because I don’t want you to be bored and you can buy a change of clothes instead of wearing the same outfit every day” “It’s our uniform” I reminded
My eyes opened in an unfamiliar room. I tried to sit up but my muscles protested and I was forced to lie down. "Just stay still" "I want to...water" I croaked. The bed sank and I was lifted. A cup was placed against my lips and I drank some water. Pillows were arranged behind me so I could sit upright. "How are you feeling?" a strange but friendly face came into my view. "I... I...." I cleared my throat. "Where am I?" "My house. Sydney brought you here" "Sydney?" the memories of what happened before I passed out came rushing back at once. A splitting headache started and I groaned. "Easy," she said soothingly and place a warm rag on my forehead. "Here take this" she gave me another cup "It'll help with the headache" I was hesitant to take the herbs but if it would get rid of my headache then it was my only choice. I took a large gulp and swallowed. Scrunching my face at the bitter aftertaste. The woman giggled. "The bitter taste will disappear in a few minutes and so will y
