Chapter 22- Needing Answers

Running away from the people hunting me seemed like an endless task, with us driving for days and only stopping to get gas or food. We did not stop long enough to eat, everything was done in the car, including diaper changes and those were gross.

Luckily, we were able to score a bigger car, a minivan to find even more space. With Damian still out of it, Dalia still weak, they both needed enough space to sleep and I needed space for all the gross diaper changes and bottle feeding. Plus, I used half of the time that Justin slept, to sleep myself.

Darco and Goddard took turns driving as I used some of my energy to heal Dalia. I only allowed myself to use a little bit...  not knowing what lies ahead, it would be foolish of me to not be prepared and it has been proven that I possess a great power, probably greater than my body can hold. I constantly feel the need to use my magic more and more for the simplest things but I don't, yet I

"Jeannie, you need to go back. Stop stalling and get your mate back. If he is indeed in his childhood memories then we will lose him. He's already so far gone Jean, you want to do whatever you can, as quickly as you can, to get Damian back. Trust me when I say that losing a mate is not something you want to experience." Dalia says to me."What do you mean lose him? He is healing, I can feel it." I say.Could I feel it? I am not so sure myself. I mean I hear his heart beat getting stronger every day and that seems to calm my nerves... that means he is getting better."Don't be so naive Jeannie. He's gone back to his childhood, which means whatever he was going through in his current age was too much to bare and the pain of his past was much easier to deal with...or maybe since he has already been through it, it seems like a walk in the park now and a warm memory resides somewhere inbetween the painful past." Today was a new day.A fresh start, a new dawn...It was all so overwhelming yet exciting. The excitement of a new world and the promise of a better tomorrow... Dalia could feel it, Darco and Goddard too. It was in Justin's baby talk and his cute giggles, in Damian's peace as he slept. His heart reaching out to me from the darkness within him, that seeks to hold him captive but he fights still. The hope in my heart for his return, fueled by this new feeling that runs in our veins and swirls in the mind constantly. The hope instilled in us seemed to bring Dalia to her full self, her healing complete and the strength to fight for better days, returned tenfold...Well, what about me?My power centered my pack.I was their beacon, A light at the end of the tunnel and I could feel all their emotions, sadness turned to pure joy in the realization that I

Damian was here....My heart was happy, my wolf even happier but something seemed off about him that I could not shake...He looked like the same Damian I have known for some time but sometimes he would look at me, in a way that sent a chill up my spine. It was cold and unloving, but as quick as it came, it left. He would then warm up and be himself again...Dalia and the boys have not noticed a thing, Damian keeping his distance and mouth shut when they talk to him. As if Darco and Goddard would care, they continued with their rants without him but keeping him away from the steering wheel..."We need to stop here and continue on foot. Jeannie and I will walk ahead to secure the area, you boys will stay behind and wait for our return. Can I trust that you will all behave?" Dalia asks and they all nod their heads.Goddard drives to the side of the road, putting the car in park. Dalia, Justin and I exit the vehicle. Dalia

"You did what?" I ask, my body starting to vibrate in anger. Xena was growling at Dalia now, fully awake and in no way were we going to allow Damian to be sacrificed."Think Jeannie! Your role in this life is far greater than just a love story. You are required to help many and sometimes that will take a lot from you. Did you honestly think that in the pursuit of your full potential there would not be any casualties?" Dalia asks, with zero emotion on her face but her voice held enough annoyance at my failure to understand or allow the sacrifice to be."I will not allow it." I say, trying to find the energy to connect with my magic and release Damian from whatever magic that holds him but failing."If it is magic that is keeping him, then it is magic that will release him."I say and Dalia chuckles."You may speak the old language but you will not succeed here. A deal has been made already and by the looks of

The man stands up and walks up to me. He holds out his hand and I reach out my hand to shake his."My name is Reginald." He says to me and I pause mid hand shake to get a better look at him. Reginald was my great grandfather's name but he died before I was even born. He looks familiar because he looks just like the man in the many photographs at home. How could that be?"Impossible." I say and he breaks out in laughter, with his head rolling back."Oh you must think I mean The alpha Reginald but no, I am no alpha." Reginald says to me."Then why do you look like him? Why do you look like the man in the pictures back home??" I ask."Well, I look like him because I was born from one of his son's and boy did he have many! They named me after him, even though your father was his first born... born from his mate, making him future alpha. I chose a different path anyway..." There are consequences to actions taken, whether it be against someone or just normally so as one embarks on the journey called life. We are given the freedom to make choices on our own, those choices lead us to where we are today.Dalia has betrayed the little trust I had in her. I mean sure, I did not completely trust her and I kind of sensed her from the beginning but my distrust for her was never because I thought she would kill people to get her way. I thought she would use me in some way and then run off, leaving me behind to deal with the consequences alone.Only to be told that I am not her first rodeo. In fact, there are plenty here under the sacrificial land, who claim to have fallen victim to Dalia's cimes. Reginald took me in to this room, a very big room with no windows and just one door, the one we walked through just now. In this room, sits about twenty individuals, staring at me blankly.Reginald introduces me as the q

"We have retrieved the boy. He is in room 71." An old man with long white hair says to Reggie, nodding his head as soon as Reggie acknowledges him with a nod as well before leaving the room, we were in.My immediate thought was Damian, him being young still. I look at Reggie but he is focused on the three trees in front of us, as if they were talking to him somehow. Hope was standing right next to me, looking in curiously like me. Reginald spends the next 5 minutes staring quietly between the three tree barks, his stance of someone busy with mind link.

In a desperate moment, fear has taken deep root within me and I decided to use Damian as my inspiration. For the love he has for his pack, in trying to prevent a big loss within the pack, I channel my dark powers differently, weaving a protective barrier around Damian. The three wolves, guided by unseen forces, are gently repelled before reaching him and sent flying to a distance. Damian, momentarily confused, notices the mystical shield surrounding him and quickly notices the three wolves a few feet away from him.He recognizes them. Using my powers, I communicate with him telepathically. "Damian, trust me. I'll keep you safe. Focus on Aaron, and let me handle this."With newfound determination, I redirect my attention to Brock. "You want a fair fight, Brock? Let's do this differently." I summon a soft, glowing light, enveloping both of us in a magical field that nullifies physical harm. "Now we fight with our claws," I suggest, ensuring a non-lethal confrontation. Brock, still fr

I couldn’t sleep.Damian was snoring next to me but I could not, for the life of me, fall asleep. Something felt off…Something was wrong and I hate this feeling. Not knowing why I feel this way, what is so wrong that my body won’t let me sleep? And then I heard it.Wolf howls and loud ones. Brock had come for his brother and he wasn’t alone.I knew he would come back for him but why was this one making me feel uneasy? Could he have an ace up his sleeve? Not much can be done to me but why was I feeling like this?Damian woke to the sound of the howls, looking at me all confused before it clicked in his head what was going on. “Are you ready?” I ask him.Damian gets out of bed, putting on a pair of sweatpants, and nods his head. He needed this fight to get his people back, to show them he was not his parents and that his heart was always in the right place.“I will get Aaron, you rally up your fighters,” I say, leaving the room to get to the basement.“Scared yet?” Aaron asks me as I

The pack watched me as I dragged an unconscious Aaron by his leg towards my house.Damian was standing by the door when I made it home and he followed me into the house, his gaze never leaving my face as we made our way upstairs. The tension in the air was palpable, filled with unspoken emotions. Once inside the bathroom, I turned on the water and let it cascade down my body, washing away the sweat and grime from the confrontation with Aaron. As I stood there, Damian hesitated for a moment before slowly undressing and stepping into the shower with me. The warmth of the water and his presence beside me created a cocoon of intimacy."Jeannie, I can't just sit back and watch you put yourself in danger," Damian said, his voice low and vulnerable.I reached for the soap, avoiding eye contact for a moment. "Damian, you can't keep shutting me out. We're in this together, as mates. I can't stand idly by while you risk your life recklessly."He took the soap from my hand and began to lather it

I could feel Damian's uncle almost at full strength. This was not good because he was stronger, much more than Damian could ever take on. I could help but if he is to be alpha, he needs to win the fight with an alpha and even though Brock relishes bloodshed, enjoys bringing pain to people and causing havoc, Damian stands a better chance at winning against the human wall over his father.Truth be told, I was not convinced my mate is in good health and he is adamant that all is well but the injuries he sustained should not have healed this quickly and maybe I can do something about it before he decides to take on his cousin."A penny or kiss for your thoughts?" Damian walks into his office. I looked at him and I am sure dead sure he could see the worried look on my face."Your uncle is almost in full health. He remains asleep but in a day or two, he will wake and look for you." I confess."Then let him!" Damian says with his hands balled into fists. I could feel his emotions swirling ar

"Wake up, beautiful..." Damian whispers in my ear. Little did he know that I was already awake, listening to his heartbeat and trying to enjoy life's little pleasures like the sound of his heart beating, proof of life.I open my eyes to see his gorgeous eyes staring back at me. I have known love, I have experienced love in many different forms and every time I experience it, it feels like the very first time. it feels like a world anew and with Damian, it is as if he is teaching it to me for the very first time."I don't think I will ever tire of this." I say to him and he rewards me with a kiss. A quick peck before leaving a trail of kisses from my lips to my collarbone."How are you feeling?" I ask him. His uncle really did a number on him and it Is important that he heals completely before we take them on, securing his place as the alpha."Getting there... I'll say, it's taking me a little longer than I thought." He says to me.I push him off me to take a good look at him...Strad

The doctor came to see Damian while I was away, keeping him heavily sedated to promote healing as he tried to wake up once and fight again. He could not force himself to sleep like Aaron's father to promote his healing, worried about the state of his pack. Damian's parents have flushed this pack down the drain. Sitting in the office when I am not checking up on Damian, the financials are worse than I thought. How the pack is surviving on a minus is a shocker to the system. The pack has been lied to for many years, they were doing okay but in reality, they were a fast sinking ship. "Hello, uncle," I say to Reginald over the phone. There was some noise in his background but he could still hear me. "What is the matter? You don't sound too happy..." He says. "The pack is in trouble. Their finances are... well, this pack is in the red and I don't know how Damian will be able to save this pack without dipping his entire form in the troubled waters..." I say over the phone. Aaron and his brother were camped out just outside the pack. Well hidden by the trees and bushes surrounding them. The alpha, Aaron's dad lay on the ground still out of it.It was clear he was in a lot of pain but he was sleeping, forcing his wolf to heal him. Aaron was huffing and puffing, complaining to his brother, who seemed not so interested in Aaron's blabber. No, bigger and worse Aaron was more worried about their dad. It is clear that he is as very fond of his dad, and probably also the favorite son seeing as he became alpha and Aaron was sent here to take over if Damian couldn't."I hope I am not interrupting anything," I say, walking out from the bush I was hiding behind. The boys stood up abruptly, shocked that they had not sniffed me out before exposing myself."Came here to finish what you started?" Aaron asks and I shake my head no."I am here to give you both a chance to keep your lives. Leave here, go back to where you come from and never come back. Stop trying to cl

Seeing Damian on the ground was enough for me to go into kill mode. His life has been threatened before, seemingly disposable and even though I have been my fair share of lovers over time, he is still important to me, and being my mate, protects him from all danger... Any danger that I can eliminate. If it is not the forces of nature or old age that dares to take his life, I will challenge any forces for trying to take him away from me.I had broken his back. The old Aaron look-alike lay with his eyes closed right next to Damian. The many people fighting outside stopped to look at the mess I had made, the trouble I have probably caused for this pack.He was definitely Aaron's father and that would make him alpha of his pack, with me attacking him, this meant war and I don't think this pack can take another beating... Not after the humans came over and killed most of them. They don't even know about me or my capabilities."You know what this means now..." Aaron says to me, standing nex

The travel back to Damian's pack was no easy feat. Having to reassure my people that they had to go back home and fix it up, making it the pack we once knew was tough as all they wanted to do was follow me but in time, I would return to guide them and to rule over them. I am a mated woman, one that is mated to an alpha, making this so much worse for me. One, I could merge the two packs but that was not my job and the job was not made to make anything easier for me. Between Damian and the pack, I will always choose my work over love but I promised to help Damian in winning his pack back and that is why I am here now, to defeat the current alpha and take back what is his.Naturally, I could just walk up to Aaron and kill him myself but this is also Damian's fight and I can only help him in fighting against Aaron and that is allowing him to find a way to defeat Aaron on his own and only jump in when he needs my help.
